My first response is always Bab Al Shams, it's my favourite, not far away. Ab Fab. I've heard the Banyan Tree is fantastic, but not been: http://www.banyantree.com/en/al_wadi/ The Meridien Hotel above Hatta seems lovely. Further afield, there is the Tilal Hotel at Liwa, near the Big Red Dunes, on the edges of the empty quarter.

We left all our Christmas decorations at home because the rest of the family unilaterally decided we wouldn't be celebrating Christmas when in a Muslim country. Last year, we did nothing - well, actually, I spent Christmas Day on a plane and stuck in snow at Zurich airport and then getting to London to care for my sick mother who had been rushed into hospital unbeknownst to me - and this year I've decided I'd like a fake green tree with lights already fixed on it. Has anyone seen something like this anywhere, please? Size doesn't matter ;)

For special occasions, I love smoked salmon cigars with home made melba toast. Or oeufs mimolette (I think that's Mimosa eggs in English) with fresh wholemeal baking powder rolls. ETA: I mean Oeufs Mimosa, not mimolette, sorry! edited by simpleasabc on 08/12/2011

Thanks for the answers, I've looked in the local pharmacies and haven't seen them and can't face a Mall today, though that Paperchase one sounds pretty. Where's the nearest Life Pharmacy to Meadows, I wonder? (That was rhetorical, I'll look it up!)

Look at the thread about Dubai pre 2002, there's a handy hint there about getting your UAE licence when you've got a provisional UK one. Not that I advocate the idea of pretending you can drive.. that was in abu dhabi and that was a long time ago when people do not know the difference. if i wasnt able to drive in the uk which actually do teach you a lot better than here, i wouldnt want to drive here in the uae in the wacky races every day and well sharjah.. edited by busybee2 on 08/12/2011 Oh, I thought it happened in Sharjah - but anyway, I agree with you about driving here. I find it extremely scary driving in the UAE and I passed my test in the UK and have been driving round Europe for the last 20 years.

Hmm, is the thinking that the parents are punished enough by knowing they were responsible for the death of their child? Has half this thread been cut, or another one on the same subject been deleted?

Interesting that parents are starting to be prosecuted for their negligence in children's deaths falling from windows, but there is yet to be legislation about car seats and seat belts.

I love the look of the Maisonettes, wish we'd known about them when we first arrived. Good lucvk with getting a good deal if you like the place! The nearest other clubs are the Emirates Golf Club, I believe (I know nothing about it) and the Hayaa Clubs in the Lakes, Town Centre and the small Spinneys (can never remember what that's called - Meadows Centre?).

I've checked my passport and can't see anything that looks like a transit visa from Cairo in it. Of course, I don't read Arabic, but I know the date we went through Cairo and I can't find a stamp with that date on it.

We changed at Cairo from Geneva to get here (is that what you mean by transiting?) and were treated like royalty with our Swiss passports. No mention of transit visa, or if there was, it just involved standing in a short queue and getting our passports stamped, if I remember correctly.

At the time, (13 years ago) the chickenpox vaccine was not given in Switzerland (the only people who insisted on it for schoolchildren were Americans) and I myself had had a really bad bout of chickenpox as a teenager, so shouldn't have been affected. No, honestly, it's not supposed to happen that way, but it did seem a strange coincidence to me..

No, worst timing ever is when you're six weeks pregnant and your 3 year old gets chickenpox and you lose the baby shortly afterwards. Coincidence? Supposedly.

There's a suggestion from DBS in the thread with updates on it. For Primary school children, they recommend a book called ‘Car Trouble’ which highlights these issues.

We got ours from ACE five years ago and it still looks great. They must have changed stockists in that time as I was most disappointed with the ones I saw in Ace SZR last week. Completely unrealistic - the only one that looked good to me was the real one on display at the entrance!

If it's any help, dorter was born in Geneva to a British citizen, and is registered as a British citizen herself. So how is she registered then? She is automatically British if you were born in the UK, right? Confused.com Not automatically these days. edited by Sugarbeach on 04/12/2011 When did that change, then? My vague memory tells me some time in the 80's... Is it something to do with the parent having been born and resident in the UK until they were at least 21, perhaps? (I've got no idea, just throwing out random thoughts.) I do remember that if dorter has a child when she is not/has not been resident in the UK, the child will not be deemed to be British, being the second generation born outside the UK.

When you apply for the first British Passport, you normally need to have a UK birth cert anyway. Dorter didn't, she just has a Swiss one stating her parents' nationalities.

Confused.com Yep, so it seems, and we registered her at the British Consulate within days of her birth, though I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

When our daughter was small, we got her to write to Father Christmas to ask for presents that she would possibly be given if she was a good girl and behaved herself and if the elves were able to make them. Even if she doesn't write the letter by herself, you could get your daughter to dictate to you and that way you'll find out what she'd like. We used a site like this one: http://www.laplandletters.com/ or this one http://www.northpole.com/ (I'm sorry, it was so long ago, I don't remember the exact one) and paid to get a personalized reply sent from the North Pole. It went down extremely well.

Thanks for the info, Fairybread Thief - I was wondering about getting one from Amazon and having it Shop'n'Shipped, but husbad says we have too many internet radios already (the fact they don't work, which is why I'd like a Logitech one, is deemed irrelevant!).

Ace hardware have them 399dhs. My dh and I spent time last night discussing how lifelike the display tree looked (it even had a really convincing trunk) before we realized it was a real one... Long day! I did exactly the same thing myself on Wednesday morning - walked in, saw the display tree, thought lovely fake that is, good price too, and then touched it and realized it was real! Have to say, the fakes aren't nearly as good!

Bussola at the Westin does a 5 course Christmas set menu; some of the Address Hotel restaurants also do a Christmas set menu, but I can't remember which. Why not look at your favourite restaurants here and see if any of them are doing that, rather than a brunch?

Here's the second page! I have to agree, it's not really all that Christmassy, but I think unless you go to a restaurant here which does a specific 4 course Christmas meal, this is probably what you're likely to get. Breakfast Hot Station Veal sausage Pancake Baked beans Beef bacon Oatmeal Live Carvery Roast Turkey with chipolata, bread stuffing, cranberry and gravy Egg Cooked in your style Condiment- Onion, pepper, tomato, cheese, olive, smoked turkey Wok Stir fried Kung pao noodles with chicken Pasta Penne and farfalle with arabiatta/ mushroom cream/ pesto Hot plate Tossed cajun marinated beef and chicken with peppers and onoin Kid’s corner Hot dog Chicken nuggets Pizza Popcorn Candy floss Dessert Composition of tropical fruit salad Crunchy marble cheese cake Christmas pudding with brandy sauce Christmas Yule log cake French pastries Macademia nuts chocolate cake with vanilla sauce Assorted oriental sweet Peach strudel with cheese nut Strawberry cake (Assorted Danish, croissant, and muffins) I know I've seen a couple of restaurants which are doing a Christmas Day lunch, not brunch, racking my brains and will get back to you. ETA 3rd page of desserts - we're sold on the Christmas Yule log! edited by simpleasabc on 01/12/2011 edited by simpleasabc on 01/12/2011
