Ladies i do want to tell you that Bab al shams emailed me the menu and there is no turkey or beef roast on it..... so if you are expecting a traditional dinner?? please look into it. I dont think we are going because the food is just not what we eat for Christmas, especially duck....not common in USA... There is definitely turkey on the menu I received from them, did you scroll down to the second page of the pdf?

I rang Amazon UK on Monday at 9 pm our time to complain about my Kindle suddenly displaying grey lines rather than text across the top of my screen. They immediately sent a new one out via Express mail, it arrived at my S&S box in England yesterday and I see it arrived in Al Quoz at 17:13 today. Brilliant service so far - I just wonder when it will be delivered, as they rarely notify me that they intend to deliver and so I often have to wait for two or three days after a parcel has arrived in Dubai to get it in my hands. I have emailed them this time and will call them tomorrow if they don't reply, as I really miss my Kindle!!

Manslaughter is manslaughter whether you pushed or not. A child is dead because no one looked after her probably, it's irrelevant if they are her parents or not. I wonder if you would think it was harsh if it was the maid who had left the poor girl alone? It just seems worse when the parents are already suffering from the loss of their child through their own fault, but you're absolutely right, there's no reason for double standards to apply.

Gummy in the rest of the normal world you would be right, but in Dubai, 'brunch' seems to be used as a catch-all word for 'buffet meal with lots of free-flow booze'! That's a brilliant description :) I've stopped expecting to see eggs Benedict, sausage, bacon etc on brunch menus :)

There are quite a few "evening brunches" on a Thursday - I think the Meridien at the airport does one, there's (a seafood?) one at Beachcomber's at JBH, Blue Orange at the Westin always has evening buffet deals and I think quite a few of the Rotanas do as well. Daisy92, when I booked, they emailed us back with our provisional reservation number, asking for our credit card details and signature to be scanned and sent back via email, which we refused to do. If you ask, they will give you their bank details and you can transfer the full amount securely via online banking (less 10% discount if you do it tomorrow!), which is what we opted to do. I say "process" because it took a couple of hours of faffing around online before I actually managed to complete the transaction! I've just now emailed to ask to be seated on the terrace. Bab Al Shams is wonderful, we hopped out there for a drink the other day and decided that Christmas Brunch would be fantastic, as I didn't think of booking for the Madinat early enough! You do realize who'll get the blame if we don't enjoy it? :D Clairedhp, I'm not looking at you at all, at all!

Spinnney's usually have it maybe just out of stock. Has he checked in Waitrose? They might have some. Give Waitrose a go as he is there in DM. Oh, maybe that was where I saw it? Sorry to have put your DH out, egg. I was really impressed with the range of flavourings they had in GL two weeks ago, but I suppose everyone's after them at Christmas..

Thanks for the tip, Claire - coincidentally, have just finished the booking process and asked for an outside table. Bonus is a 10% discount for paying before 1st December! Has it ever rained on Christmas Day in Dubai? What's the usual temperature here then?

I've no opinion really, except that I have always felt the peanut and wheat allergy business to be fads which were non-existent during my childhood in the late Fifties and Sixties. Then I read the horrible story of SuzyDuzy's poor friend and I'm now completely convinced that nuts shouldn't be allowed into schools. Well, you always get a few nutters amongst the parents, of course, but that's a different story ;)

We are booked for Al Qasr - whats it like, is it magical, singing? no children, taking my parents - is there turkey, stuffing etc? would be great to know as my Dad really would like his proper Christmas dinner! what about bab al shams? anyone been there for xmas? We've decided to try it there on Clairedhp's recommendation from last year. We've got nephew coming over from Vancouver and the contrast will be amazing for him, though I think I'm going to be more impressed than the teenagers if Father Christmas rides in on a camel from the desert! Depending on weather, will get full pool day as well!

Here you go, ladies, from Wikipedia, fount of all knowledge: Q: Yellow (and related shades) In the early years of the breed through to the mid-20th century, Labradors of a shade we would now call "yellow" were in fact a dark, almost butterscotch, colour (visible in early yellow Labrador photographs). The shade was known as "Golden" until required to be changed by the UK Kennel Club, on the grounds that "Gold" was not actually a colour. Over the 20th century a preference for far lighter shades of yellow through to cream prevailed, until today most yellow Labradors are of this shade. Also fawn has been a common colour in the yellow lab variety UQ. You're both right, and Sue is older than MaryCatherine ;)

best potatoes for creamy mash are the floury potatoes like maris piper or King edwards. Lots of butter and lots of milk and lots of elbow grease - I've never had a good result with a whisk but can do really lovely creamy mash with an old fashioned potatoe masher. I haven't seen Maris Piper or King Edwards here, though, Claire. It was useful in Geneva, we used to get bags of pots labelled "puree", "baked" "frites", "robe des champs", or "four" rather than the variety, so you knew what to do with them :D <em>edited by simpleasabc on 23/11/2011</em>

TB vaccine should only be done once in a lifetime. The greater risk of contracting the disease is between the ages of 11 and 21 (as told to me by a British GP). The vaccine is valid for 10 years only.It is a difficult call. It really depends how much you are potentially exposed to the disease. But surely, there are BCG "boosters", for if you are in danger of coming into contact with TB 10 years after you were first vaccinated? With the spread of HIV, TB is far more prevalent than it used to be in the Western world, in any case, I thought?

Sorry, no experiences to share, though I remember being told that children could be born with one or more teeth and it was nothing to worry about. Maybe get a second opinion from a dentist who specializes in young children? I would tend to think your obstetrician was right, but understand your concern if the tooth is loose.

Quenda, I wouldn't worry, as long as you make an effort to conform (right shirt, trousers and shoes colours), I'm sure the school will be fine if you explain your circumstances. My expletive deleted dorter wears make up, jewellery and nail varnish against the rules and they are very kind to her about it. Mind you, she wears the correct uniform! (Only joking!) Are you both talking about the same schools? Isn't Wellington Primary near Safa Park, off Interchange 1, whilst Wellington International School, which has a primary section as well as a secondary school, is in Al Sufouh 1, off Interchange 4? The first is nearer the World Trade Centre and the second nearer Knowledge Village. This probably makes a difference to your travel times. I think the Parents' Association at WIS provide a second-hand uniform service and I should imagine they do something similar at Wellington Primary. OP, your best bet is to call the school and ask, they are always very helpful, I've found. Good luck with finding somewhere to live. I'm sorry I can't be more help. Hope the children settle in to the school well.

What or huh instead of pardon. 'Pardon' is disliked by the upper class, apparently. Read 'Watching the English' by Kate Fox. Hilarious! Can someone please elaborate on this? To me upper or lower class, what just sounds rude! Pardon is so much more polite. Nancy Mitford (English aristo), in her article “The English Aristocracy”, published with other essays about social classes in "Noblesse Oblige" (1950's), made the distinction between "what" and "pardon" (and many other "U" and "Non-U" words). She also maintained that you should eat peas with a spoon, or something - maybe from your knife, not the fork, or maybe one at a time from the fork tines, I can't remember. After National Day and all that excitement is finished! :) Can't deal with too much happening at the same time :D We always leave putting the tree up till Christmas Eve, and tradition has it you're supposed to take it down on Twelfth Night (6th January, the Epiphany or Feast of the Kings), but in Geneva, we used to leave it up for as long as possible to cheer us up through the dark winter days :) MS, I can't figure out who you are, but do you have anything to do with Alex's shoes?
