But honestly there are perhaps many reasons. For example, a friend who is a nutritionist was explaining to me that somewhere in the world (I can't remember) they have been investigating why male seaguls have started nesting with male seaguls. The conclusion was, they attributed it to heavy chemical contamination found in the area which caused hormonal changes within the seaguls. edited by Stardust on 08/11/2011 Good grief.

I'm completely outraged by this article I read recently: http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/fisk/robert-fisk-do-those-who-flaunt-the-poppy-on-their-lapels-know-that-they-mock-the-war-dead-6257416.html I think he's got it completely wrong. My daughter, who has never lived in England or a Commonwealth country, knows enough to have brought back a poppy for me when she went to a Rugby Club in Sharjah the other day. My parenting may be bad, but at least she has learned to respect the fallen soldiers of WWI and WWII and the sacrifice they made. Wearing a poppy is a way to manifest this respect, nothing more, nothing less.

Stardust, a friend of mine whose son is autistic didn't consider separating the MMR vaccines as she was convinced that he was on the autistic spectrum from when he was quite young and she didn't even look at the vaccine as being a "trigger". Just a thought, but I get the feeling that in modern times, we have become more aware of these things. The old "Village Idiot", or "Idiot Savant", cared for and accepted by the entire local community 100 years ago, is now given the label autistic. Perhaps? Yes I agree with all that but also think that we see more cases of autism today. I have two chidren with genetic issues (not austism though) and at the time of being diagnosed I was told that even though it is the safest time in history to have a baby, equally they are seeing more special needs than ever before. Is that perhaps because we have fewer still-births and much lower infant mortality rates thanks to modern medical methods?

Apparently, you have to buy a water connection kit from the manufacturer/distributor - it comes with a fridge fitting, a nylon water line and a T-fitting to connect to the cold water line under the sink. You don't need a plumber to do it, or so says my husband, the fount of wisdom!

Willa, honestly, this is the first I've heard of it, when I was pregnant (albeit a long time ago) the two concerns were Rubella and toxoplasmosis, closely followed by gestational diabetes.. This is what the NHS has to say about chickenpox in pregnancy: http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/1109.aspx?CategoryID=54&SubCategoryID=137 Of course, whether you want to put your trust in the NHS is another matter ;)

Isn't the Rubella vaccination the most important one to have before you're pregnant?

A friend of ours had her baby prematurely via C-section a few weeks ago at Welcare Hospital. She had been having regular appointments with her doctor there, but he happened to be away at the time she gave birth. She has nothing but good to say about the care both she and the baby (who had to go into NICU for a while) received from doctors and nursing staff.

Hi, AustraliaJudy and welcome to Dubai. I found the most useful tip I was given before arriving here was to get the Dubai Explorer book (the Red Tape book is interesting but not necessarily up to date): http://www.explorerpublishing.com/corporate/products/dubai/guidebooks. Good luck with the move.

Thanks! I think you're right, not worth the potential problems. Just a thought though... if he is due to take one or two of the tabs while flying, it would't be an issue if he just took those 2 tabs onboard would it, as he would be taking them before getting off the plane. And would't have the box with him. There's a horror story on the net about a woman being jailed for having codeine in her system on landing in Dubai. Hang on.. http://www.dubaifaqs.com/drugs-dubai.php Tracy Wilkinson

I wouldn't risk it at all - just in case. It seems highly unlikely he will be stopped and jailed, but just in case he's unlucky.. http://www.fairtrials.net/press/article/list_of_controlled_pharmaceutical_substances_in_uae Get your dad to get something else prescribed for his cold/flu. Once he's here, he'll be able to find a pretty strong equivalent sold over the counter.

Anthony Worrall-Thompson's books have quite good Low GI recipes, I find (not that I've made any, I've just looked at the pictures). Have protein snacks rather than fruit, perhaps try raw celery sticks, cucumber as little nibbles? I have a feeling that carrots and tomatoes are both bad on a low GI diet, but I might be wrong and cherry tomatoes might be OK. I think the main thing to do is to cut down on carbs and sugars, which I agree is a bore.

I make my own crumpets...mmmmmm. So delicious with lashings of hot butter and vegemite. I got the recipe from this blog ( just scroll down a little) http://ivynest.blogspot.com/search/label/food?updated-max=2011-09-22T08%3A56%3A00%2B10%3A00&max-results=20 Oooh, thank you, I got my crumpet rings from Amazon (and then saw them in Lakeland!) but never got round to making them. I haven't noticed any dried yeast here, though, anyone point me in the right direction? And for another stupid question, are shops open over the Eid holidays?

The Dubai London Clinic on Jumeirah Road is open 24/7, but doesn't have facilities after-hours to do anything like radiography; ditto the Rosary Clinic in Springs, though I think both can do blood and urine tests and get the results quickly. You might find a hospital emergency department is your best bet. Good luck, hope you're all right.

Most Gulf Air flights from BAH to DXB have been delayed today, by the looks of it. The 5pm one departed only about 20 mins late, but others have been delayed by 45 mins to an hour. You should leave tonight, with any luck, but you won't get an early night, I'm sorry to say.

I leave the meringue in a very low oven overnight if I'm ahead of myself, but if not, I don't bother. I don't see a difference, either way, the meringue sticks to the parchment! I think you're supposed to leave a hollow in the centre of the Pavlova meringue for the fruit and cream, so you don't serve it turned over with the flat side up. But I am not a Kiwi, so I culd be wrong! I don't know about the pressure cooker for condensed milk, I think I read 20 to 25 minutes, but I've no idea really!

Maybe depends on how long you and your OH had spent in the country of your child's birth and how important the country was to the two of you and to your lives together? If neither of you have any roots or sense of belonging there, then it's not really part of your child's heritage, just an incidental place where your child was born, I would have thought.

Anyone found the Al Khail Road / Emirates Road (Airport direction) from it yet? I made it to Al Sufouh in 8 minutes this morning, including one traffic lights stop. Haven't worked out if it's faster than going via the Greens, though, as have never timed that journey! ET stop stooping. <em>edited by simpleasabc on 01/11/2011</em>

It leads you straight on to Al Khail, but you can only make a right turn onto it (i.e towards Jebel Ali) and, as you know, the roundabout is now closed so you can no longer go up to there and turn around if you need to go the other way or wanted to get onto Emirates Rd :( You're kidding :) So what's the point? Can't you go towards Al Barsha from there, somehow, and then get on to the Emirates Road via the Motor City interchange? (Sorry, geography and navigational skills atrocious, names of areas and roads worse..)

I think it will, yes, it is shortening the scenic route we have been taking from there via the Greens to get to Emirates Road since the exits from the Jumeirah Village Triangle roundabout were closed. I wish I'd known at 3 this morning as I forgot and and went up to the Green Community roundabout to take our guests to the airport..

I saw mincemeat in Spinneys just this morning - use this recipe, it's really quick, easy and you can pretend you made everything from scratch, like the mother at the beginning of "I Don't Know How She Does It" (book, haven't seen the film) :D It's Anthony Worral-Thompson's recipe, easy as - erme - pies ;) http://uktv.co.uk/food/recipe/aid/512388
