My daughter, aged 16, needs CAS hours for her IB Diploma, which means she would teach your son for free. She was at school in French until last year and is very good at basic grammar and of course speaks fluently. I honestly don't know how good she is at teaching, though. Do you want to see what your son's French teacher advises and maybe we could work something out - have a trial meet, at least? I'm sorry, I've no idea what age Grade 8 is.. Kalimera, Efi, kai kalos irthate :) Sorry if that's wrong, I'm don't speak the language, but am married to a Greek, who is away at the mo, and who travels a lot for work generally. Our daughter is 16 and speaks good Greek and is fluent in English as well. Your daughter will pick the language up in no time. There is a Greek Orthodox church out at Jabal Ali (though I think for some reason the language spoken by the priests there is not Greek), where you should meet other Greeks. We often hear Greek spoken when we're out and about in the Malls, so we're sure there must be quite a few here! (Think of all the Greeks who emigrated to Melbourne and who may be here now, sounding Australian ;) ) We too are very worried about the whole climate in Greece, (particularly our back taxes which have just come to light) but my husband has lived and worked away from his country for over 35 years, so we are not in Dubai as a direct result of the current Greek situation. <em>edited by simpleasabc on 02/11/2011</em>

I've never lived there but have visited bro' and his family, who emigrated there from London a few years ago. They have become Canadian citizens, they are so happy there. They feel the quality of life is much better for their sons now than it was in London. They find the cost of living quite high, but at least they don't have to pay to be guaranteed good schooling, which is their main concern. They have also bought in a very expensive area (because the best schools are on their doorstep, they say). They are quite happy with the climate, though I found it quite cold and grey even in July, when we were there. Schools were quite often closed because of snow last winter. It rains more than it does in Dubai ;) It's a lovely, lively city, with a lot to offer, particularly if you like the wildlife, sea and outdoor/snow activities.

Excuse my ignorance, but where are "Old Town" and "Downtown"? If they are the original parts of Dubai, as I would assume from their names, surely there would be more mosques there than anywhere else? Way off the mark! They are the low rise, 'traditional style' apartments near the Burj Khalifa! Built about 3-4 years ago. Ah, right, gotcha, thanks :) Confused dot com, moi? So are Bastakiya and the areas round the Creek the "real" Old Town/Downtown?

I just wanted to thank the OP for this information, I wish I'd seen it a year ago when we first moved in to our villa. Then, I got the alternate HH company and was not particularly impressed, so didn't use them again. This week, the lady who usually comes to us wasn't available, so I thought I'd try another company. I called Helping Hand, who are a Sri Lankan company, and not only are they cheaper than others at AED25 per hour*, but the lady I have had so far is very good and works on her own initiative. The hours she can do don't exactly fit with my requirements, but you can't have everything! *Yes, I do give her a tip. <em>edited by simpleasabc on 26/10/2011</em>

We've been twice and as GEA1984 says, each time the abra ride was the highlight of the evening. We thought it was maybe because the people we went with insisted on choosing for us, but we weren't madly impressed with the food, particularly with the prices they charge. Have never sat outside. I prefer the tapas place but you can't get there by abra!

Oh, Exile, you poor thing. It's horrific enough when you're feeling well.. Interesting that only one of your daughters has them. We think ours got hers in the first place from a borrowed horse-riding hat at a stables where she was taking lessons. Despite all our efforts, because other children in her class were not treated, she had lice on and off for a few years. You need to make sure the whole class is alerted and taking steps to get rid of them.

I should think you can get tea tree oil at a health shop or the Body Shop, or even a pharmacy. Lavender oil is also supposed to work, as apparently lice don't like the smell. An alternative to the coconut oil is to slather the hair with conditioner and then comb the nits out with a lice comb. Same principle. Frances is right, unless the whole class, if not school, is working to get rid of the nits, they will just keep on coming back. You can't blame one child for them. In our experience, some families pretend it's not happening to them and refuse to treat their children, so the lice just keep on spreading. In case anyone thinks otherwise, it is not because you and your family are dirty, on the contrary, lice like clean hair, we were told. The best solution is to shave your child's head and then anoint it with tea tree oil. Drastic, but it works!

I moved from Meadows 2 to Meadows 9 a few months ago and I love it. Yes you need to allow another 10 minutes to get to the SZR which can turn into 40 minutes in school traffic but I find it a lot quieter and less dusty than meadows 2. Community Pool is not really important to me but if it was that would be a pain going to springs 14. Oh, this has reminded me, we don't mind going to Springs 14 for the pool. We deliberately chose a villa without a pool in the garden because of the horror stories we'd heard about DEWA costs from friends in Arabian Ranches, who had a pool and outrageous bills. We didn't want to risk it in Meadows 9. Presume this is also why we pay less rent.

We love it here. I think we're too near the pylons for our own good, but the rest of the family pooh-pooh me. If we had more money, I would prefer to live in a Meadows nearer to SZR as I always forget to add an extra 10 mins to any journey to get out of here.. We go to the pool in Springs 14. We are lucky, we have a good landlord with good maintenance staff and, at 180k pa, according to RERA tables, we are apparently paying below the odds for the area. I know WaxMuch likes it here, but AussiePup has had an awful time and would be out of here like a shot. Other people we know here seem to be quite happy, with no issues.

I agree, I think it's terribly expensive. We can't afford to go back ourselves unless we stay with friends. Maybe look up house swaps on line (sorry, I've no experience), or ask Mrs Laughan if she fancies coming back for Christmas? :) Premier Inn are quite reasonable but probably booked up already, there's another cheap chain whose name I forget. Will get back to you.

Have you tried to call Du or Etisalat (which ever you are with) as they should be able to block certain numbers from calling you. I've tried them, but they say they can't block individual numbers. The police have his number now, anyway.

Is changing both numbers an option for a quick solution? IF going to the police is not possible, I mean. I wondered about that, GattaMatta, but I should think it would be more complicated to do that than reporting to the police :) Al Ameen are on it and seem very quick dealing with things, thank you.

If you haven't looked already, wouldn't the Green Community be ideal for you if your DH is working at DIP? It's a lovely place, really family and children orientated, I would think you would settle nicely there. You can walk to the shopping centre, as well. I've no idea of prices though, it might be out of your budget. Motor City also has a nice feel to it, but again, I'm not so sure of the prices. Depending on how far your husband wants to commute, I wouldn't really consider the Greens end of town, but that's just me. Good luck with the move.
