Much more interested in the CB and GB goss, but anyway, have nothing to offer there! Could someone kindly check the front page of HSBC dot ae and see if in the top left hand corner, there is a possibility for you to log in securely? Instead of the usual access to sign in, all I'm seeing is a closed padlock and On, with the rest of the page which should be there cut off. I've been trying to find a number to call about this, but everything I ring is engaged and I'm told to call back. Just wondered if it was a specific problem in my browser, or more general. I'm using Firefox 3.6.22. Thanks for any help. edited by simpleasabc on 26/09/2011

Sorry, what's a salary certificate? I'm imagining it's a piece of paper proving you've been paid after your first month in a new job, but that doesn't half beggar you up with your bank if you've got loans and they freeze your account for a month.

I'm old, lazy and unfit, and I wouldn't manage it in this heat. Even in winter, I couldn't do it. Not even from the Internet City Metro, which is the nearest to it.

Nikki, he's still at work, but I know there were 8 of them altogether and they paid AED250 a head. Will get him to ask his pals which company it was, tomorrow, if he doesn't get back before I hit the sack tonight..

Ooo some nice suggestions....has anyone tried a blue cheese melted on toast? Absolutely yummy! Afraid I just can't eat blue cheese! vintage is as far as I go! Like I say I love Gruyere especially when it's aged a little and has these kind of grains in it almost like salt. Anyone know what I mean? Yup, I think you mean the cellar-aged stuff. Deelish. By the way, haloumi is wonderful if you grill it with olive oil and then serve it with a splirt (?) of fresh lemon juice and some fresh red chillis in olive oil, a la Nigella.

Nikki63, my husband went on a deep-sea fishing expedition the other morning, with a group of friends and someone to help them set up the fishing and catch. They left at 5 am and went 20 miles off-shore and caught quite a few fish, including a barracuda and a shark. Got back at about midday. If you're interested, I'll try and find out the name of the company they went with, they had a whale (sorry) of a time.

It's big in Arabian Ranches, I think. Otherwise, it seems to be a bigger deal in Geneva (CH, not US) than here :D OTOH, we were still in a hotel this time last year, so maybe we didn't get to see the real thang..

this is all dependant on your company informing them OR putting final settlement through the government system. I am on my 4th job here and have not had my bank account frozen. Sorry, IKID, but how did you manage that? Did you not have any bank loans, for a start? Or has that nothing to do with it?

Go dune bashing in the Liwa desert; Take a guided tour of the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi; Visit the Emirates Palace Hotel whilst you're in AD (go and look at the Christmas Tree in the lobby, entry is free, not like at the Burj Al Arab!); Afternoon tea at the Madinat; Blue souq in Sharjah; Bastakiya and Shindagha (Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House has wonderful photos of "early" Dubai); The Oasis at Al Ain; Apparently, the Gold & Diamond Park on SZR is worth a visit and a purchase if you like jewellery. Have a great time :)

Do any of the banks actually allow you to have a new contract in place of an old one? as in work? yes. How does that work, PI? I seem to remember having read here of people who had another job in place but whose bank still froze their account when the final salary cheque went in. It seems very tricky to get it right, doesn't it?

Our has been all over the place the last few days, i suspect something else with elections going on but could be wrong. Like this (from the Khaleej Times)? "Technical problems in the e-voting system, particularly in Al Ain where computers went down for almost two hours, were the other reasons for the delay in results."

I wish mine wasn't an only, though I don't know what I'd have done if I'd had a boy after a girl :) Little bro and I fought like cat and dog until I left home when I was 18 and he was 15; since then, we've always been on good terms, and it is great to have someone else around to talk to when we have problems with our parents (and our children!). My husband, OTOH, is an only and though he didn't feel he missed out during his childhood and didn't really want a second child, though I did, is feeling the strain now his mother is old and sick and there's no sibling around with whom to share the concerns. Good luck with your decision either way :)

Sorry, I don't know about the flu vaccine per se, or for babies, but my aged mother has been given the flu vaccine for many years and hasn't suffered side-effects from the vaccine, nor caught flu, in all that time. Since they suggest the flu vaccine mostly for old people and babies, maybe it would be a good idea for your son? (This is just a lay-person's opinion.)

You now have to go up to the Green Community Interchange and do what they call a "U-turn" (all the way round the roundabout) to go back down the Al Khail Road and then get on to the Emirates Road in the direction of Arabian Ranches, Mirdiff, etc.

We have upgraded Internet too...**** compared to the UK. I can't compare as have only ever used dial-up in the UK :) It used not to be that good in Switzerland at week-ends, either, you're right, it's got something to do with increased traffic. But I've been trying to watch stuff all week and it's been sitting on buffering most of the time. Downton Abbey is going to be shown on TV here, at some point, isn't it? edited by simpleasabc on 24/09/2011

The Wharf at Mina Al Salam do a good roast dinner on Saturdays and Sundays from 7pm. There is usually 2 or 3 meats available and it cost 90 Dhs, but you can use the entertainer vouchers so works out reasonable plus they have drinks promotions. I have also heard the Underground at Habtoor Grand has a new English chef that does a roast dinner, can't remember what day though. If you want a roast dinner on a Friday I can recommend the yorkshire puddings and roast chicken at Al Qasr brunch! Huuuuuunnnnnnnnnnnnnngrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!

Ooof, so glad we don't own here - it's been bad enough in that third world country Greece - no rent received for over a year and huge court costs to get the non-paying sitting tenant out. (Rent supposed to be paid monthly in arrears. Fat chance.) At least we had a small deposit from the lying reneging toad. Do you not have a deposit which would cover your costs incurred whilst you look for a new tenant?

We did Bab Al Shams last christmas day - it was fabulous - Santa arrived across the sand dunes on a camel! superb food, lovely decorations and we all sat outside - wonderful experience and one I will never forget. We have also done turkey take out which is also superb. We are back in the UK now and can't decide whether to do the turkey at home or go out to one of the hotels or a country pub...... hmmm decisions, decisions...... Dare I ask how much that cost, Claire? It sounds wonderful, but possibly out of our budget as there may be 10 of us this year. BTW, were your ears burning today? I was just telling a friend how much I wish I'd met you when you were here and how I want to be you when I grow up, IYSWIM :D

Dear Simples, you are in fact quite correct to a point. However, you should also be aware that the possessive apostrophe argument could possibly be used as could the argument that anyone of the slightly older generation or taught by those of the older generation at school would have indeed been taught this way due to shortening of the word photographs. Which is why i believe there is confusion. My apologies, Lady F, you are, of course, right.

Ack - i HATE that! I'm not sure i get it though - is it a spelling error/translation thing? Or a 'saving letters on the keyboard' thing? Either way, it makes me cringe every time. such as: advice and advise, lose and loose, here, here for hear Not to mention dorter instead of daughter ;) [i'>Insert *tounge firmly in cheek* emoticon[/i'> I do that deliberately, it is an in-joke I have brought from elsewhere, though apparently only EW senior members' in-jokes are allowed here? If you tell me that everyone who types an apostrophe s instead of an s for a plural word which ends in s is making a deliberate typo just to annoy me and others like me, that's fine. I prefer that to the alternative. My lovely dorter is recovering well from her emergency operation, during which serious time, she was definitely my beloved only daughter.

Sorry simpleas, we all know you used to be a proof reader and obviously that's a hard habit to break, but is it really necessary to belittle posters when they make minor errors ? Especially on here, where so many posters are not using their first language.... Every day I see typos on here that I find mildly irritating - my current one is ppl confusing " advice" with " advise" but I accept that this is a forum, not a university or top level business, and ppl's writing styles can be informal (or not in their native language), it doesn't matter.... Sorry Sue, as you say, I thoroughly agree that there are many many mistakes and typos here which are by people whose first language is not English (such as: advice and advise, lose and loose, here, here for hear, hear), and I have got used to sitting on my hands for them, but when the basic mistake of not knowing how to make a plural by adding an "s" is made by someone who is clearly native English, I'm afraid my fingers fly away with me. My apologies to Lady Farquhar if she is not English born and bred and educated in England. I was also not trying to rude but to extract the Michael from my self for knowingly being such a pain on this matter. I'll try and be good in future. You must admit, I only let myself go once every few months, nowadays :( You can't believe the amount of self-restraint that has gone into it ;) I believe it's the source of my high blood-pressure :\: Do you really say ''I was also not trying to rude''? I agree with Sue, if people wants help with grammar or spelling they ask for it or enroll in an English course. If you want some challenge read a forum in a language that you aren't so ''strong'' in. There you go, we all make mistakes - what's the name of that internet law about making a typo just when you're correcting someone else's? Serves me right!
