Glad to hear things are getting a wee (sorry, couldn't resist) bit better - but the sewer smell problem is atrocious. I was just thinking about you this morning but didn't want to disturb your Eid hols. I still haven't worked out where your house is, not having walked down the street sniffffffffffffffffing yet :) Hope things will be sorted by the time your guests arrive.

Hi there, I've no personal experience either, but wonder if you've seen this link? http://www.emiratesspecialneeds.com/autism-spectrum-disorder-dubai-uae.asp DesertRose1958 lives in Oman, not Dubai, and has experience with autism, I believe, and is always very helpful, so if she doesn't answer this thread, you could maybe put out a call for her or search for threads on autism where she has commented.

We're with the competition and paying a fortune for a supposedly high (wide?) bandwidth, but it doesn't work very well and phoning home is sometimes impossible.

Helping Hands were OK, but I like Aston, they will give you the same maid if you ask and they do their best to provide you with someone even at short notice (same afternoon or next morning). They also work for 2 hours only at a time, if you want, which suits me well. Details here: http://astondubai.com/household Had a very bad experience with another company, whose name I forget, unfortunately, though it was none of the ones you mention above.

Hi, Olwyn, welcome to Dubai! I'm sorry, I've no idea about what is included in "fully furnished" places. Have you looked on Dubizzle, or googled for long-term furnished accommodation in Dubai? I get the feeling most people prefer to rent unfurnished, unless they stay in hotel apartments, though I'm willing to be proved wrong. We saw a couple of furnished places when we were looking around, and they included absolutely everything, almost down to the bed-linen, but unfortunately were not to our taste at all..

Hi, Mom, and welcome! There are a fair few villas available for your budget in Meadows 9, but if you go by Aussie Pup's experience, you wouldn't move here. Ocean View and Better Homes both have properties to rent in our street, but I've no idea what state they're in. Good luck :)

Does anyone rent a Granada or a Cordoba? Are there any new (unlived-in) and newly landscaped, with properly functioning pool, available for rent? How much are they going for? How many beds and baths? I've not visited for a year (yoo-hoo, Cornish Pixie, how you doing?!) and we have a potential change in circumstances I'd like to be fully armed for.

Mayden racecourse is all sign posted easy access from al ain rd ...can't miss it...:) You don't know me driving with my "trusty" GPS for company - we make a truly awful team ;) The GPS hates SZR and will do anything to avoid it, whereas it's my favourite way to get from A to B :) You can imagine how I go round in circles in my battle to get the GPS to go past Salik toll bridges :)

From here: http://www.dubaievents.ae/en/news/media/news-archive/dubai-events-and-promotions-establishment-unveils-highlights-of-fourth-eid-in-dubai-eid-al-fitr-fest.html Q: ‘Eid in Dubai’ Fireworks Venue: Al Seef Street and Dubai Creek Park Date: Three days of Eid A hallmark of every ‘Eid in Dubai’, spectacular fireworks displays will light up the sky during ‘Eid in Dubai’. Visitors at Al Seef Street and Dubai Creek Park can watch the displays on the three days of Eid at 9pm. UQ. I don't know where that venue is, not having looked at a map, for all I know it may be the Burj Khalifa, but I wouldn't think so. ETA: I've looked at a map and I'm none the wiser :( <em>edited by simpleasabc on 30/08/2011</em>

Also, I believe in the cooler months, there is a "Farmers' Market" on Friday mornings in the Souk Al Bahar. There's a thread about it here: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=135517 Not exactly what you wanted, but maybe of interest?

We didn't even know the GCS existed at the time we were staying in the area; we were also fixed on living in The Lakes, so she was at a school in the New Dubai area anyway :)

The hour before sunset would be the best, I think and you have to hope for a very clear day, the only time I've been up you couldn't see very far at all and just lights after dark. ETA: We were mean and didn't fork out for telescopes, I think that might be a good idea. You need to take a map to work out what you're looking at, as well :) <em>edited by simpleasabc on 30/08/2011</em>

Its entirely up to you if you want to give him something extra for Eid. Like CCDXB said, if he deserves it. I usually don't give the gardener an Eid tip (as he is useless) but I do give the maid a christmas tip. She's got a pretty big one in advance this year, it seems.. :( Has she turned up yet?

I've only got the one, she's just changing schools and going into Y12, first year of IB Diploma. We were out at the Green Community whilst we were waiting for our container to arrive, but it was too far from her school in New Dubai for us to stay there, though we loved it there and go back to the Courtyard whenever we can. Maid service is the way to go :) We didn't move in to our house till our container had arrived, anyway, we were lucky, the company paid for our hotel stay..

I'm sorry, DF, as usual, I've nothing to say but {{{hugs}}}. No advice to offer. I know my husband has kept some secrets from me, ostensibly because he doesn't want to worry me, but there are times when I wonder.. I think I've found them all out, and they're benign, but who ever knows, he might yet be doing something behind my back - it might be nothing, or it might be marriage breaking. I'm the opposite of husbad, what you see is what you get, he knows exactly where I am, but secretive is his middle name, knowingly or unknowingly. You'll need to look after yourself first. Do what you think is right for you - you're sensing something wrong, you'd be happier at home, do it. As Izzy says, "Men, you can't live with them, you can't shoot them".

Starsouthern, that's awful. Do you know if it depends on the developer how things work out, or is it just random awfulness? I seem to remember reading here that there was one developer who was completing things on time, to a high standard, and another who ran out of the readies and just left people in the lurch. Did that happen to your friends or did I just imagine that kind of thing?

Oh, good, Amalwaleed, I was going to put out a call for you in case you were putting your children in GCS, but I thought it might look too "stalky".. You are all so brave, cleaning your dirty houses from top to bottom, I'm afraid I just got onto a maid agency and got them in to do the brunt of it.. But I'm old, and fat, and have got bad knees and a bad back, you know.. <em>edited by simpleasabc on 29/08/2011</em>

I wish we'd decided on the Villa when we first arrived, you can get so much more for your money, and the houses look lovely, but dorter fell in love with our house in the Meadows and as we were trying to placate her about living here, we chose the place she wanted. She still needs placating, so we're still here - I wouldn't have minded moving to the Villa but have been shouted down :) Things would be different if I actually earned my own money, I can tell you ;)

Yes, apparently it's from 6pm on the last day of Ramadan to 7pm the first day of Eid, if I understand correctly. Reading elsewhere, it's not sure if today or tomorrow will count as the last day of Ramadan.

Do they do that in Dubai? Thought it was only Sharjah..... Never had my eye scanned in Dubai with or without my residency (or is it only for certain passports) It is done in dubai and has been for just over three years. They don't scan everyone that comes through, though. Had mine done when we came a year ago... umm..... does that mean you look dodgy? No idea, we'd been told it was part of the visa.... Funny that, we came over at more or less the same time as you, didn't we, and we didn't have an eye scan as part of the visa. Maybe because different country of origin? We cracked up when we came here via Cairo, as all the customs officers waved us to the front of the queue in great admiration when they saw our Swiss passports :)

My favourite was actually an Australian series from about 10 years ago, I think, starring Sigrid Thornton, called "Sea Change", but I don't know if it's available on line at all. Another Aussie classic series is "Blue Heelers", then there was "Adrenalin Junkies" and "All Saints" , not to mention "The Secret Life of Us". All excellent, but not sure if you can download them at all :(
