It wasn't a bad match, though. Does anyone else think Nadal is awfully fey? Not that there's anything wrong with it, but a bit weird in the tennis context. edited by simpleasabc on 01/07/2011

Where is Raffles, please, Mrs Mopp? My ma is being so bleaaagh about being here that I fear the Burj Al Arab afternoon tea will be wasted on her, so I might as well take her somewhere cheaper.

My experience was over 20 years ago. I am not medically trained but I would think that the swift reaction is because they think they can do something if they act immediately, so this is positive. With my father, it was too late. I certainly hope it is not so for your dad and your family.

Yes? Simples? No, honestly, I don't find EW that violent, but I gather MumsNet is really, really, really, aggressive. I've never been on there. I've just been out to brunch today ;)

Ladies, I am loosing my mind since I can't find this recipe anywhere!!! The internet is full of recipes (I tried google with several different word variations), but I can't find the recipe I need, and I'm starting to get really cranky :D!!! And I thought you EW ladies will know for sure the recipe I am looking for. So my question is: How to make that mayo based dressing that is often served with shrimps (I think it has mayo, ketchup, lemon, horse radish, garlic...)? Thank you in advance if anyone can help me! Bung some brandy in if you're OK with alcohol and it's a winner! Tabasco also, if you like it hot :)

If it suits you and your own immediate family to do it, do it. It's not up to other relatives to decide for you. You have listed your pros here, list them to your relatives. Everyone is different. We are much older than your average ex-pat family here and our own families and some of our friends back home disapprove of us being here now, but we had to weigh up the fact that we would be jobless otherwise and actually, we wouldn't have such great opportunities elsewhere. It's your life, not theirs. Enjoy the move and good luck :)

No pampas grass or upside down pineapples, but a couple of v nice young Irish chaps who kindly independently offered us a BOGOF voucher, so please, if you know them, thank them again:) A lovely lady who had a chat with my Ma and with whom I hope I will meet up shortly and maybe even get a job contact from; another lovely young lady who was saying goodbye to Dubai and moving to Belgium. We had fun :) Erme, what exactly ARE Mojitos?

I'll ask my daughter, she loves it there and is making me go back soon so she can see her friends. So, there is the lake and the fountain. The Cathedrale St Pierre. The Vielle Ville. A meal at the cafe de Paris (steak and chips and salad) is about CHF40 per head, excluding drinks. Oh, look, I'm not the person to ask, I hate it there. I'll get the child to reply when she gets home. Switzerland is Swiss Francs, but if you venture into nearby "France Voisine", take Euros. Annecy is lovely.

Sorry, I'm not sure where Springs 5 & 6 are. But you know the wide road where all the roadworks are? You go to the roundabout at the top, which is next to Jumeirah Islands, and you will see an exit for The Town Centre there, you can't miss the Mosque.

Do you like the Cellar brunch at the Aviation Club in the Irish Village? It's one where you order a la carte, but for a fixed price you can have as much as you want, I think it's AED 190 per head including booze? V good food!

TwoKids, that's a good question! You've just reminded me that I can't find my Entertainment (or even Entertainer!) Card.. So far, I've never been asked to present the card when using vouchers from the book, but I've never used one I've printed myself before. Does anyone know about this, please? Don't remember how geared up they are for small children at Al Qasr, maybe ask when you ring to book? edited by simpleasabc on 30/06/2011

i dont think a dhs.1,000 fine is enough imo You're right. Shame they don't seem to have an idea of how much the fine will be, it might make that chap think again before insisting on not buying a car-seat for his baby. BP up, deep breaths, take tablets.

Great idea, Abby n Christina - there have been ones in the UK over the years which have had a huge impact, not just on drink-driving, but also making sure people wear seat-belts. D'you think the local equivalent of Jimmy Saville saying "Clunk-Click with every trip" would do it?

Is it mandatory for adults to wear seat-belts here? If so, is it enforced and are there huge fines?

But people everywhere in the world need to be educated about this. The "Buckle Up" campaign is doing a great job, but it needs to be a law which is enforced rigorously for that man to take it seriously - on-the-spot fines of AED1000 a time might do it for people who think that way, even if they don't want to be educated..

If they are being shipped separately, won't each package be charged at the basic price of AED41 (that's what it was last time I got something) per 0.5kg? Not that that adds up to AED105, of course.. Can't help you re customs charges..

Whoops, sorry, I forgot about the children, was reliving my mis-spent twenties and thirties as a happy singleton in London :) Lol yeah it sounded like it although I spent mine in Yates wine lodge and finos wine bar!!!!!! I worked just next to the Royal Academy on Piccadilly, and in a business where there was a lot of socialising, so not only did I frequent Gordon's Wine Bar and similar low dives with friends, but my work was such that I also spent a lot of time in Green's Champagne Bar and at Langan's :) Ay, them were t'days...

LOL....sounds like a plan Oh, and whilst you're visiting the Natural History Museum in South Ken, you might as well take them to the Science Museum and maybe even the Victoria & Albert Museum. Also, Horrids (Harrods Dept Store) in Knightsbridge, just to say you've been there.. Maybe get a bit of a picnic from the Food Hall and come back with a green and gold carrier bag :) Sorry, you've got me going now - Food Halls of London Not To Be Missed: So, we have Harrods in Knightsbridge, Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly (actually, I understand Afternoon Tea at the Fountain Restaurant is a goody!) and Selfridge's Oxford Street. Gosh, I'm almost homesick ;)

Personally, i would expect EK employees to get discounted travel etc as a perk of the job in the same way as UK bank staff get special interest rates for mortgages, supermarket employees get a percentage off their shopping etc etc... it's just fringe benefits, end of. Can't understand why so much fuss is being made and why does the subject even get discussed ?? lol I hadn't seen any mention of it on EW, maybe it had been in the papers or something? Quite agree, IN, it's well-know that BA staff are (used to be?) allowed to get almost free tickets up to £3k-worth once or twice a year and if they don't want to use them, they can sell them on at face-value, or a bit of a discount, to their friends or family, thus adding to their earnings. Perk of the job, that's all.

Madame Tussaud's and the London Planetarium used to be top of the list when I was a child, but we've not made it there with DD as you have to book well in advance, on line, I think, to get a good deal. I strongly recommend taking a tour of the Tower of London (Crown Jewels also) with one of the Yeomen of the Guard, very interesting and good fun. Well set up for adults and children alike. St James's Park is lovely, you could also visit Kew Gardens and Hampton Court, depending on how much time you have and how good the weather is :)

Thanks ladies, is Bogoff a good restaurant? Simpleasbc: most of them are teenagers and can't share :) I really like your description of Al Hambra, I've never been there but sure I will try Teenagers love it, we took ours with friends and she's clamouring to go back :) You get a selection of tapas and everyone has a taste of everything. Yumm, Yumm :) I repeat, that potato bread is fantastic (I think you dip it in a tomato salsa, it's gorge :) ) Apart from the food, it's beautifully situated and if you're sitting at the right table, you can see the beautiful Burj al Arab. There's also live Spanish music.
