Yes, it's the console's fault. Nothing to do with rules or parents enforcing limits. When I was 13 I refused to stop playing my Sega, used to sneak it all hours of the night. Eventually mum just cut the cable, too bad for me! Kids test boundaries, they get awah with what they are allowed to get away with. Any console with an online component carries warnings about responsible use. If kids are not able to be trusted, simpke. Kill the internet connection. You can still play without it.

Thanks guys! I did do a lot of research into it when I was younger as I had considered a career with the RAAF, but did not meet the entry requirements... :( If he is reluctant, then that is another thing. I wuldn't want to push someone into the mil life who is not keen on it. Perhaps he can meet with arecruitment officer who can better explain the life, the steps in the training and let him knw his options wrt to study while training etc. I know there is usually requirements posted on military recruiting websites, eg RAAF has the 'get ready for the training course' with examples of how to get the fitness level required to pass basic training. There's also a website written by a couple of ex air force (Aussie) guys "Get Your Wings" (or similar) who I think are both now in EK (though they don't specifically mention it) someone I flew with once told me about it, they describe their training and what the testing, selection etc was like. Maybe someone who was in the RAF has done the same? They had an ebook you could buy that had sample questions etc...

Military can be a good way to get into the industry, but he should be aware that usually there is a return of service commitment. After that, he can either stay in the forces or move to 'civilian' life. However- how easily that happens can depend on what type of aircraft he flew on and what sort of flying he did. For example, pilots who only fly fighters *may* have more diffiuclty getting a civilian position than transport pilots (since transports are more similar to civilian aircraft) He ay or may not be able to choose which type of aircraft he flies if he does join the RAF. But, all of them will do a basics course, usually on a small single engine trainer, and then the students are evaluated as to their personalities, skills, attitude etc and placed onto wherever there is a need and where those with experience feel they will be the best 'fit'. So someone who has their heart set on being a 'top gun' jet pilot may end up on a Hercules cargo transport. But- it's usually where they will be most fulfilled, the instructors are very good at picking who should go where. However, if done right, military can transition to civvie flying. Many air forces offer good opportunities to study a degree while serving, and if he chooses the right ones they can help him later when he leaves to look for a job outside of the military. He could also branch into instructing in the forces, which means he could always do that as a starting point in civilian life and move from there. A good way to go about it would be to get onto an aircraft that is similar to, or the military equivalent of, a current type in use for the airlines. E.g. a KC-135 is a converted Boeing 707 so it's quite similar to the Boeing 737, 767, 777 in terms of procedures etc... Going the comercial route gives a bit mroe freedo to move around BUT the selection process can be incredibly competitive and tough. Cathay I believe is one of te few who take outsiders, Etihad I believe is now only open to UAE nationals. Please avoid if you can those awful 'pay to fly' schemes in Europe- he will pay far more and end up in a jet with very little experience, not a good combination as tempting as the thought of a shiny jet may be. Also he stands a hgh chance of being ripped off as there are so many scamsters out there preying on the reams of young people. I regularly hear of them being swindled to the tune of 50,000 euros or more. Stick with reputable airlines or military. You could also look into a university with an aviation component but I' not sure about the costs. E.g Swinburne in Melbourne if he is Aussie...

I think on destinations where it's the piece system (US) you pay per piece. I imagne everywhere else would be by the kilo. Does the stuff absolutely have to come with her? It may be more economical to send it unaccompanied if she doesn't need it urgently. There's a few companies near Perth airport that do this. Otherwise, try calling Emirates reservations to see if they can give you the price, if you want to do it ahead it may be possible for them to add this to your booking, but you would need to know the weight. It would also depend on the item, and how full the flight is. When my sister came to visit she brought some of my things and was 3kg over, the flight wasn't full so they let it slide. Then again, we are nice in Perth ;)

Entirely possible her appearance was changed. Also, think about what things were like that long ago.I remember the Muhsen family had huuuuge issues attempting to find Zana and Nadia, and they were half Yemeni... entirely possible that people just didn't question things as much as they do now.

Following an ultra long haul it's usually longer than 11hrs. More like 2 'local nights' which entails sleeping in your own bed in Dubai at night between 10pm and 6am. So you could arrive early am, have that night, the next night then sign on after 6am... have done it before. Depending on what the next flight is though, it may be longer. It depends on time zones crossed as well as the other factors mentioned.

Virgin Australia. However it's codeshare with Etihad so you need to check when booking whose aircraft you'll actually be flying on.

I was passenger but since he was being rude to the crew and trying to open the exit already while on ground I told him if he didn't want to listen he could trade places with me, sorry should have worded it better. He gave me a 'look' but behaved after that. (This was after the flight attendants had checked the cabin so they were not around to see what he was doing)

Not always. Try sitting near or just behind the wing. The aircraft's centre of gravity is usually just behind the wing, therefore the further front or back you are the potential is for more movement. However, you can get more 'wagging' from side to side at the very back. Flight attendants cannot sit with passengers for takeoff and landing. Maybe on "Pan Am" tv show but not IRL. We need to be in our jumpseat and by our door or position in case of any emergency. However, we can provide reassuring glances and smiles if you are within our sightline :) Do let us know though, I find fearful flyers fit into a few categories. 1. The "not in Control" as someone mentioned, it's not the flying or the height but the lack of control. Knowing that the pilots are very well trained can help. Try to distract yourself with tv or a book. 2. The "fear of heights/turbulence" they have a phobia of something else which is magnified by being on the plane. Finding out the cause of the original phobia and addressing that can often help with the fear of flying. 3. "Claustrophobics" It's not the height or the plae but the feeling shut in. Try sitting just forward of a bulkhead, so that you can see the whole cabin. It helps to be able to see more ahead of you, so it looks bigger. On planes like A380 and 747, upper decks are smaller in width and height so you may find it better on the main deck. (If you have to choose between Economy on B777 and A380, the 380 has 'straighter' fuselage walls on main deck so it seems bigger- there's less curvature so seems more spacious. 4. "I watch too much news". Remember, media often love to play up accidents. E.g "Air France falls out of sky" type headline. It didn't just fall out of the sky, many things went wrong for it to crash. In the industry it's known as "Swiss cheese". For an accident to happen, a chain of events must take place, i.e. the holes in the cheese line up... take away any single event and the accident doesn't happen. Luckily, the safety systems in place catch most of these errors and prevent accidents. As someone mentioned, statistically you are safer on plane than driving down SZR!! The "no air pocket" is what people describe when they don't understand CAT. Think of it more as a 'pot-hole' yes the plane dips but it comes back up again, just like your car when driving over a pot-hole in the road. Some roads are bumpier than others, just as some flights are. Summer Breeze, UPS was very sad but again, a lot of factors all came together at once for that to happen. It would be very rare for the exact same thing to happen again.

I agree, FlyDubai is fine for short trips but personally I couldn't stand it for more than a few hours. Nothing to do with the plane or service, everything to do with self-absorbed people who could not bear to switch off their phones even for take off! Had to really hold back, they were super annoying! However, one guy in the exit row was not taking it seriously at all, so much so I politely but firmly told him I would be changing seats with him for take off and landing! Service was fine, buy on board style and you can pay for movies, budget airlines are doable if you prepare accordingly and remember that if things go wrong delay-wise, they may not look after you as much as 'legacy' airlines... might be worth keeping in mind when travelling with little ones.

[i'>so the USA is applying American law to AK, which you'd think the British government would do for this woman. [/i'> Difference being, Amanda Knox is physically in the US, so yes, US law applies however this woman is in custody outside f Britain, yes? Therefore British law would not apply. It's the same in Australia, once you leave, you leave. They make it very clear that the most that can be done is to give legal advice, that is it. We currently have a group on death row or serving life sentences in jail in Indonesia for drug crimes. (Google the "Bali Nine" and Schapelle Corby) There is even a huge sign in Customs at every Australian airport departure stating that many countries impose the death penalty for smuggling or trafficking drugs. Ignorance is no excuse. edited by SkyKitty on 08/05/2013

more worried as In, I hope they dont all spew, I hope the bags stay in the hatrack etc etc. I've never felt like anything would happen to the plane itself. Those few times it's been really rough I called the boys and asked what the weather ahead looked like, how long they think it will last etc. Hearing them so matter of fact about it helps. then again I have flying (pilot) experience so it's easier for me because I understand the science of how the plane flies. Despite Air France and what you may hear, its been many many years since a large jet has crashed due to a storm alone. Other factors always came into play.

yeah, sounds like CAT then. I've had a few rough trips but only 2 where I was remotely worried. I was just wndering where in the plane she was since in bad turbulence the back can get a rougher ride... 737 esp used to 'wag its tail' a bit

Quinn stop being so dramatic. She doesn't want to leave baby "day and night".. she wants to leave the baby ONE night a MONTH!! Seriously... TDB try what others have suggested, have at-home date night first and see how DH responds. Or, if you have friends with kids perhaps you can do as was suggested and trade a night each to watch the other's LO so each couple can have a date night? I'm not a mum but my best friend is and she has said how much better she feels now that she and hubby have a night or two each month for themselves, her LO goes to her parents' house which is about 10mins away.

They wouldn't. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to predict turbulence, and even then, it may be more severe than anticipated, just like any weather phenomenon. Rest assured the pilots of the flight are more than ready to cancel if they feel there is any undue risk. After all, they are on the same plane! ;) In my experience, many passengers (especially those who do not fly often) describe turbulence as "extremely severe" when in fast it may be moderate at most. The problem with thunderstorms is, the associated weather when bad will usually (but not always) show up on a weather radar, so the course is plotted to avoid turbulence as much as possible. This only works, however, with turbulence associated with rain, since weather radar picks up on moisture particles in the air. Clear Air Turbulence is another thing entirely, and can come out of nowhere. From the description you give here, I would guess they encountered some unexpectedl CAT. This is why the flight crew always advise to keep your seatbelt on at all times. Also, the lad in front screaming does not necessary mean there was any danger, it just means she is probably a nervous flier... Sometimes it is not possible to immediately change to a flight level out fo the bad weather, especially Doha-Dubai being a short flight. That air traffic area can get very busy so may take a few minutes to safely change altitude/flight path. Also the flight never gets to a very high altitude being so short, so is more likely to encounter turbulence. Was she sitting towards the back of the plane by any chance?

would still be worth checking though, because big companies like Jumeirah and Emirates have approval for large scale company accommodation. key world being company- obviously there would be permission in place for this. I read recently that DSO and EK just signed a deal to build 5 new towers to complement the Semmer villa project and house future joining flight and cabin crew. Govt knows about it.

Sucks they didn't reply but airlines get tens of thousands of emails a week. I guess etihad just reply to the ones they can actually give a reply to? Im guessing to employ enough people just to answer emails would increase tickets further.... I often don't get replies from hotels and that's asking for availability on a specific date! Ams airport quite good, range of shops and if you get time the viewing deck is fun for the kids (or big kids) ;)

Airlines won't even tell their own staff about potential new routes, they are hardly going to reply to emails asking about it. How do they know you are not a competitor looking to get the jump? I remember one particular route expansion was denied by my company up until a few days before they flew it!

I think a few of you are being a bit hard on Maroosh. I too use mainly taxis and public transport to get around, I have both driving and non-driving friends. Many times my friends insist on driving me/picking me up from somewhere even though they know full well I am willing and able to take a taxi/bus/metro. I guess it depends on communication between you and your friends. I have always told my friends not to feel obliged and if they are too tired/would rather not/want to go straight home to please say so and I will happily take a taxi. On a couple of occasions they have said just so - they have somewhere else to go, they want some time with their kid, etc etc... no one is hurt, we are all adults and I think that is the key- sometimes your friend may not know you are feeling unhappy unless you TELL HER! Of course, this probably doesn't apply to TDB's friend who sounds a bit of a jerk, to be honest. Is quite expensive for a new driver to get a license in DXB, one of my friends just got hers and it took her a lot of time and money. So no, not everyone can afford to get a license in Dubai. And frankly, I have no real need of driving in DXB since I can get most places on public transport. Maybe it would be different if I had to do school run or lived further out (like DSO or similar) but since we don't then I really have no need. If my friends and I want to plan a road trip then we discuss and appropriate arrangements made. I have offered to rent a car before but friend insisted on having her DH drive us. They refused petrol money so I bought them dinner on our next night out.

From what I can remember: * Jars of formula are available. They used to come on loaded with the special meals if ordered, but now it's just a standard loading per flight. SO a good idea to have backups just in case. (Once did a US flight with 22 babies- as you can imagine 12-20 jars does not go far on a flight that long) Can't recall the brand but it has Arabic writing so local I think. * The formula used to be powder variety, I think it was Karicare or some such, but since so much of it went to waste (had to throw the open tin at the end) it got switched to that carton milk (I think 250ml per carton) and not a lot of them either.(Maybe 12-15 at most on A380) * The bottles are there, but they are quite small and not at all fancy- really just for mum in case the one she brought on breaks or something. The best thing to do, if your LO likes a particular brand is to BYO formula powder or milk. Lots of mums have those divided containers with the portions pre measured then can just ask for water. To be honest the best and least hassle method for all is to bring an empty thermos, that way you can ask the crew to fill it up, the water has time to cool down and then you can take some off with you into the airport/car and use it later. Ditto for cartons of milk. You can BYO and get it put in the chiller. You will get a sticky label for it so it's ID'd as yours. Fresh milk supply depends on the scheduled service and length of the flight. On the aforementioned 22-baby flight some parents were getting angry with us that we couldn't give cups of milk to 5 and 6 year olds but the priority is for the service and for the smaller babies so if your kids like fresh then definitely bring some on. In Dubai shouldn't be a problem through security and I've seen it come on in the US too. Just check with the airport concerned. HTH

Probably civilian contractors. In my general observation, military personnel are generally quite well behaved when flying and won't leave a mess, since they're expected to be neat and tidy on duty and it's a habit that tends to go with them when they travel... I do say 'most' haha, but I love mil charters, they are the easiest flights I have ever done! Contractors- well, a mixed bunch just like everyone else ;)

Australia. Trying to drive here freaks me out, and if you will be moving to Adelaide soon there is probably no point in learning in a foreign country when you will be driving on the opposite side of the road there... Quite awhile since I got my license but in Oz they seem very fair as to the assessments- you get a clear outline of what you are expected to do to pass, none of this "X amount of passes per day" we keep hearing about happening here.. Not sure if it's still the same but while recommended I did not have to use a professional driving tracher (though recommended for maybe the first few lessons and before your test) I did a few with a teacher then my parents drove around with me for the coached driving. I had to fill a log book with driving in different conditions as possible e.g. day, night, highway, city etc up to 40 hours. It got to be a pain doing short trips so on weekends we took a long drive somewhere to build up the hours (plus country driving is great experience to get when you are supervised rather than going it alone the first time)

Can she not stay with a friend or neighbour to visit?? How long would she be staying for? Hardly seems fair on the cat to get rid of it for a visit that may only be a few times a year... Sadly I don't think you will have much luck this time of year, but try Dubizzle. Is having him go stay with friends temporarily an option? Even if you re-home him, you would still need to clean the house before your mum comes to stay.
