Google Helping Hands UAE, email them with a list of what you have they are pretty quick to get back. They either donate items to people who need (e,g, people affected by fires etc) or sell and use the money in labour camps etc... I also used Take My Junk and they even took cups, glasses etc... but I did sort them into 'sets' as we had a lot of odds and ends. The security guys in my building took the rest for their lunch room, since we had a lot of odd cutlery etc but they didn't care about the looks, just the function

Yep, Claire's usually has a few, in different sizes. I wear one for work, and it can be even easier than what some others here have said. To use mine, I do this: 1. Smooth hair and put in ponytail 2. Put donut over the top 3. Tip head forward and spread hair evenly over the donut 4. Use a clear stretchy elastic and snap it quickly around the edges of the donut 5. Stand up straight, letting the ends of the hair fall, damp them down then wind them around the outside of the donut and secure with pins. A hairnet will help if you want to keep it neat for hours but is not strictly necessary. You can also do a high pony on the very top of your head, and leave some of the ends free for the "ballerina bun" weekend look. Depends on the size of the donut though. Sock buns are a good alternative but are heavier and I found them annoying after awhile.

Try a freight Booker? Animals can't just be put in any hold, also depending on what other cargo is on the flight, it may preclude carrying live animals on that trip. So you might just be unlucky with the timing. Anyway, maybe you could work with an agent so they do the hard work/calling round. Good luck

My point was I don't expect or accept tips yet do the same and more, so why some people in f&b have this attitude that they are entitled to tips whether they do their job or not Is beyond me. And no, crew are not always paid more in fact when I started I made less than $400 a week, significantly less than my friends waiting tables and banking tips....

I suppose what I mean is that I'd really only want to pay it off in 1-2 years as opposed to 4 like they say on the website... really not sure if I will be here that long. If I had the loan, does it need to be paid in full for me to leave Dubai, or is a payment plan with the bank from my bank back home acceptable to let me leave?

Ok, thanks Polly. So they early payment thing is like if you want to do a lump sum, I guess it would only be allowed once or twice a year (from what I gather on their site) so I would be better off putting the extra aside until I have a bigger amount and paying it in a lump sum. 1% of remaining is not so bad I guess.

I tip when I feel like it. Which is usually in most cases. I know the Burger Fuel guy gets the delivery fee, but he is usually very quick and my order usually runs at 47 dhs so I just give him the 50 and tell him to keep the rest. He is always there quicker than 30mins and they tell me 45 minimum. The only time I won't tip is if they are rude to me, which is rare. Once they brought the wrong order and I wanted to cancel but the guy told me he would be in trouble so he just went back and got the right order and came back, so I did give him a bit more. Only happened the once so I don't think they were doing it on purpose! I jsut find it annoying how some staff seem to expect tips, like another poster said, for a service I have already paid for. Especially if they ignore you or you have to continually look for them (fair cop if they are run off their feet, I understand, but when I am the only person in a restaurant and still get ignored then no, no excuse) As someone who serves food and drinks, and runs back and forth for hours on end I find it amusing how steamed some wait staff get when someone leaves what they might think is inadequate. I don't get tips at all and can assure you that many of my colleagues who used to work as waiters made plenty enough from tips, I find the USA particularly bad for 'expecting' tips regardless of how rude they treat you. Perhaps if people only tipped when a job is done properly it would force the minimum wage up. I'm Australian and we did not previously have a tipping culture, however I notice it has started to creep in on my last few visits and to be honest I don't like it. We have a minimum wage so there is no reason for anyone to be living off tips. Anyway the original questions was about delivery, I'll tip if I have it on me sometimes not, so next time I will make up for it especially if it is the same delivery guy. They get to know that they'll get tips eventually so it's no big deal to them, I find.

Hi ladies, I tried to use the search function but couldn't find specifically what I was looking for... I just have a couple questions about loans with the Enn Bee Dee bank. 1. Their site says you must have your salary put into their bank (which I do) am assuming this means they deduct the monthly replayment automatically when salary goes in? 2. If you want to pay off the loan early they say there's a 1% charge of the loan amount- am assuming this would apply every time you made any extra payment? So it probably wouldn't be feasible to pay extra every month as it would push the cost up... Also am a bit scared to have a loan here since you hear so many horror stories, however with the $AUD being so high still and me earning in Dhs it makes more sense to just be done with it, borrow it Dhs and pay off my Aussie credit card in full then pay it back in the currency I am earning in. Anyone been in my shoes and have any advice/experiences? I would also be having the loan guaranteed by my employer (you know who, the big airline) so am guessing it wouldn't involve security cheques etc since they usually go after outstanding monies when we resign anyway...? I.e. they are responsible and have access to our salary to cover anything we don't pay, if we decide to leave the country they will know about it anyway. Just worried if for any reason a payment gets missed I don't want a travel ban since travel is my job! TIA

To be honest I wouldn't put a lot of stock in 'Skytrax'- they tend to edit the reviews and post more negative ones than positive. I once submitted a fairly neutral but leaning to positive review when I flew with Qatar and they never published it. (no mistakes, conformed to their rules) Also, I once read a review where the reviewer marked down that company because he wasn't allowed on extra luggage that he hadn't paid for- hardly a legitimate complaint. I've also had passengers tell me they've had reviews edited almost comepletely so it didn't resemble the original. I think many of these reviews are fakes and/or by people who have a beef with that particular airline. Of course, there are some 'bad' airlines out there but I have seen multiple similar reviews submitted under 10 or 12 different names for different airlines, with minor details changed but essentially the same review over again. Better to go by word of mouth of actual people you know... I think review websites just become a monaing ground for anyone who thinks they have been slighted in some way (true or not) I have to word this carefully, but in my experience some complaints that airlines receive seem to come from people who decide that they will complain when they are refused something that they haven't paid for (e.g. they feel offended when they ask for something from First Class and are denied it because they are not travelling in that cabin) Of course genuine reasons to complain, go ahead, but not getting freebies or special treatment that is not paid for/deserved is not a genuine reason IMHO) Anyway my point is, if that airline has a good timing and goes where you want to, why not try it for yourself. Most have pictures on their websites and Seatguru.com is a pretty good resource since you can look up factual information like what type of seat it is, the inches of seat pitch and so on (without 'bad' reviews which may or may not be true or factual) <em>edited by SkyKitty on 12/03/2013</em>

JadoPado is [url=http://www.jadopado.com'>link[/url'> they deliver same day if item is in stock. But they don't have it. I think Spyro's Adventure is the first Skylanders and Giants is the other one. You can check [url=http://www.geekaygames.com'>Geekay website[/url'> and buy online. They have pics so you will know which is the game you are looking for. If your Wii is from the UK then it is almost certainly PAL format. Mine is from Oz and is PAL, on the bottom/side there is a plaque that says the country, well mine has numbers ending in AUS. If your Wii has been modified (ask your cousin) then it may be able to play either. My sister modified mine before I left so that I could copy my games onto a hard disk and leave them at home, so now I can buy either disc and they will work. But anyway, I am sure yours is PAL, look at games you already own that work, if the cover of the game has a coloured number rating, it is PAL. If it has a letter (e.g. E for Everyone) then it is NTSC <em>edited by SkyKitty on 11/03/2013</em>

Have you tried JadoPado? They *may* have it or be able to get it in? Geekay has Skylanders starter pack for Wii PAL, but it's Spyro, not Giants... [url=http://www.geekaygames.com/wii-pal/skylanders-spyros-adventure-starter-pack.html'>link[/url'> It says they had Giants but currently out of stock, you may be able to order it in. If I had seen this last week I could have got one from US, but it depends on the console (NTSC or PAL)

I suppose Dubai Aquarium is pretty good for the 'wow it's big' factor, but I enjoyed the little themed areas at Lost Chambers... there is one stunning tank that has the neon fisht hat glow under lights, it's so colourful and pretty. Ok so the 'lost civilisation' thing is made up and more for the kids but it's dark and mysterious and very 'sci fi' like... whereas from what I remember Dubai Mall one is quite brightly lit... I din't mind Lost Chambers, but then again the entry was part of a stay at the hotel so we didn't pay only for that iykwim, my sisters enjoyed it and normally it's not their 'thing'. If you're planning to go and make a day of it then why not. The jellyfish are pretty cool, too.

No you don't have to delete, just install the other browser. I do know that EK prefer IE and WIndows for msot applications, they are catching up with Mac compatability but it is not as across the board as PC and IE support.... which is why I tend to use IE for work stuff and Firefox for everything else. I would also suggest to try resizing the pics yourself, rather than using inbuilt tools. It's also not just a matter of the print size, but the resolution. If it lets you upload as a PDF, then try a free program called Cute PDF, is easy to use and you can download a free version. However by the sounds of it I don't think they are up with that level of technology yet! Sorry to hear it's so much trouble. I know our IT guys have issues when sending between different companies/countries, it must be a nightmare to coordinate.

Might be a long shot, but have you tried using a different browser/computer? I had to submit a new passport copy for my sister when she came to visit, and I couldn't get it to work even though it was the correct size, format etc. I used a different browser and then it worked. One of the guys in EK IT dept said to try this if I ever have issues uploading, since they update the servers quite often, if your browser is even slightly out of date it may not upload properly. So, maybe update your IE/Firefox etc, and then try again? Note- when I am logged on to the company network, I cannot usually open any intranet applications when using Firefox, only the basics like my email. If I want to look up anything on the HR portal (inc documents) I have to use IE. Security thing, I think. HTH & good luck

Yeah, makes sense. I guess what I was getting at was maybe it's one of those 'mother' things... that for us without kids we can find the crying distressing but mum can actually tune it out because she knows whether it's a 'serious' I-actually-need-something cry or a 'cry for the sake of it' cry....I just don't know how they can do it (method wise) since I can't ever tune it out even if I want to... lol... Good point about the phone thing, I have noticed even in the last few years people seem less willing to wait for anything, in this 'instant gratification' culture... god forbid it takes me 2 minutes to go get a drink, suddendly the crew are "slow and lazy" or "worst flight ever"... think all the gadgets and stuff has something to do with it...

Like I said, I was asking a question. I don't give judgy looks, I just feel sorry for them both since it can't be fun! Different story if it's toddlers running amok with no intervention... but that has been done to death already! I genuinely wanted to know if sometimes mums just don;t hear crying any more... I remember my mum mentioning something about when I was younger but didn't pay much attention... she said something about if she got really stressed she just didn't seem to hear us any more... i was wondering if its a common thing for many mums or not

They used to do this at school, my mum forgot about my costume so on the day of i put on white singlet and shorts and my sister wrapped me in loo roll and I went as the mummy from Goosebumps ;) Another year I went as a 'bookshelf'- wore a box and stuck old book spines on it as the books... Genuine question here, honestly not trying to stir... but sometimes I'm in a shop and a baby is screaming blue murder, you know, that 'I'm really really hungry or poopy' scream, and the mum is just calmly looking through the clothes or whatever (maybe she just fed the baby, who knows) does it happen when you have a baby that you get to a point where you can tune out the crying? I only ask coz it drives me nuts as I feel so bad for the baby to be crying like that, that I wonder if it's some biological thing where the mum just doesn't 'hear' the baby any more? Like, if she is really stressed, does the body just tune it out? I get the walking around to calm the baby down thing, I see it all the time on the plane, but usually the mum is also saying something to the baby or touching it in some kind of way, I mean when they leave the baby to scream in a pram for 20 minutes at a time and not even glance back... I don't think this is what you ladies are describing to me as 'just getting on with it'... trying to understand the reasons why someone may do this when I see it... I can't stand the cry and want to go pick up the poor thing and give it a cuddle! :(

If, despite everything, your little guy kicks off and makes a fuss, would you feel worse/self conscious about it more in biz class than if you were in economy? It may be worth it for your sanity to go economy if you don't want to worry so much about everyone else... there does seem to be a bit more of a 'boo hoo' about noisy kids in premium cabins, rightly or not, since people have spent way more money and expect a level of peace (I know, sometimes kids just fuss and it can't be helped) If you are going A380 biz, depending on how many of you are travelling, try to book your seats online early as possible. Quite often if the flight is full you may be split if you just show up for seat selection at the airport. If there are 4 of you (2 adults, 2 kids) then you may want to try opt for 2 lots of E&F seats in J class. They are together (i.e. touching distance) BUT each of these rows is separated by the other seats so they are only every 2 rows (eg 7 EF, 9EF, 11EF) the other option if you prefer to be across from each other is to try for say you and littlest one in a B&D or G&J aisle seats, so you are directly across the aisle, and DH and 6yo in front/behind you in a J(front) and K (behind) so you are sitting near (but not immediately next to) each other.... anyway have a look at seatguru you will see what I mean. Bulkhead seats in biz class usually don't make a difference space wise unless you are using a basinette. Sitting towards the rear means you will be closer to the bathrooms and bar, so you may feel less conscious of noise. Front of cabin is quieter and closer to First class and you won';t be able to use the bathroom at that end since it's for first class cabin. Definitely easier to be near the back (also the crew are mostly coming and going there so will be around and most will stop to say hi to the little guy if they are not busy.) Just a tip- walking around is fine, but please observe the seatbelt sign, it's a real pain but we have to enforce it and I really hate having to chase parents around asking them to take LO back to seat...we hate doing it and they hate us for asking but it has to be done... other than that, go to town! Last week a had a little guy with me in the lounge, sitting on the sofa drawing pictures since he was getting bored with his dad! haha!

Well Lola, because as far as I can tell, FF and other similar groups aren't getting any funding from the govt, it's all donations, and the municipality seems to just euthanise or catch the strays. If they even subsidised such operations for pregnant strays, it would encourage more people to adopt them and at the same time stop them from breeding and given time, the stray population *should* start to reduce. As it is, most people don't bother because sadly on the list of bills like food, rent etc stray animals don't exactly take out top spot. Even having 50% govt funding for a first time 'adopter' would encourage people to do something about it who may not otherwise for fear of the initial expenses. You know what I mean. FF can only do so much, and many of the vets who give discounts are doing it from goodwill, surely if the govt chipped in a bit, it would encourage more vets to provide this kind of operations etc to people wanting to 'adopt' strays....

Actually you've just reminded me, I meant to have a look for defibrillator boxes in the station. I've seen them in lots ofpalces here like malls etc but not in the train. They do have fire extinguishers but I do wonder exactly how much training the staff have. I recall a story where someone was fined for vomiting in the station!! To be fair though if you have no training it can be scry, a faint may just be a faint and I can usually recognise one, but to the average person it can look quite shocking (add in blood tot he mix and its even worse) Bear in mind also many people in the Gulf countries are reluctant to act due to reports of some people getting into legal troubles if the situation has a serious result (even if the were just 'trying to help'- I believe there are no such thing as 'good Samaritan laws' here like in US/UK/Oz)

Geez I must be coming through a different airport to you ladies... even with a bus ride the longest it's ever taken from aircraft to taxi rank is 1 hr without egate... that was the worst and at the midnight-2am 'rush hour' FYI for the poster who was complaining about the new train transfer, I timed it last week at 75 seconds from when I sat down in the train to arriving in the new concourse. I've had longer transits in China/Europe! Curious about FlyDubai since a lot of EK flights are always full so they may be good for soem last minute tickets- bit wary of T2 though as I usually will metro to/from T1/3 if it's running. What's the average taxi fare from Downtown/Dubai Mall?

Not really because I could see it coming and leave before it got to that level. Anyway, are you saying that there's then nopoint in walking out? Surely better to shorten the exposure of the episode to eveyone else then let it continue. I saw the warning signs with my middle nephew very early on and by telling him what would happen, his response would tell me if a storm was coming and I would just leave with him. I could handle him better alone in the car then in front of a crowd of people, he loved an audience!! :)

You mean the foil ones with baby food? I think so, I've had mums bring fresh milk bottles and jar food, so out of DXB it shouldn't be a hassle. You may be able to buy baby food in the duty free store (the one that sells chocolate, Tang etc) or the pharmacy, but I don't g through often so haven't seen lately. Out of Seattle best to check the website of the airport since different cities have different rules. I did have a mother bring fresh milk bottle on in Seattle so it's obviously possible.

Actually I think there ARE times that kids should be seen and not heard, e.g.in a cinema with others, in restaurants etc... I'm not talking normal 'being a kid and playing nicely' but screaming/tantrums shouting. I can say this as I was a bit of a horror tantrum-thrower myself, no matter how inconvenient, my parent swould remove me and we would go home if I wouldn't behave. I saw the starts of many movies but not the ends, until I was well behaved enough to sit in a cinema and watch a movie quietly with everyone else. (bit different for an actual kids' movie, I agree) I think sometimes parents don't realise that their kids are too young/not enough attention span for certain activities and don't choose accordingly... it's kind fo selfish because the parents may want a night out but don't take into account whether their particular child is suited to the activity. E.g. taking a little kid late at night to a grown up movie they do not like or understand. Of course the poor kid is going to make a fuss, any child would when bored or scared. I get that it's a hassle for babysitters etc but sometimes you can't do things with kids that you can do as a solo adult. I say this not having my own kids but having spent a lot of time caring for nieces/nephews. I have had to walk out of movies, restaurants, you name it because one of them wouldn't behave or threw a tantrum/ran amok etc.... Plent yof palces for people with kids, I agree, why shouldn't there be places with no kids? I hate bars and clubs, all that loud music so youcan't talk, smoky environment, mostly ment trying to hit on me and I jsut want a quiet night! So yes I love the movies and hate being interrupted by any rude/bad behaviour whether it be adult or child!

If flying with EK, book in good time sicne the north america flights always seem to be overbooked. On my last Seattle flight we had around 70 kids including 22 infants!!! :O All in all most were good and the parents did their best, one or two not caring about their kids ir anyone else but you always get that. I thought the kids did quite well for being cooped up that long! PS byo milk/formula if you need it since we only had 6 cartons of baby milk and of course that didn't last long. Plenty of water to mix up formula, however...

I pretty much only book Cat C now when I fly to Oz (can't be bothered with the standby hassle) when you get the e-ticket in your co email, if you scroll down to the flight info on it, left hand side next to the flight number where it usualyl says 'confirmed' if it says 'standby' then it's a waitlisted ticket. As far as I can remember this happens when there's no seats in the Cat C/D column, OR if the check box in TRIPS was marked as 'waitlist' when you sent the request (you can do this as an option for some reason- I guess when booking backup flights for a Cat A?) I had this ocne when I thought there was space on the flight but since TRIPS is only updated once a day at midnight it showed seats when there was not- so when the ticket got processed it was a waitlist. I don't think I've explained very well but hopefully you get what I mean! It is quite rare for that to happen though, but I do know that JFK, SEA and YYZ are usually all overbooked so would probably be less rare on those flights, esp when booking close to the date of departure. If you are ever unsure I've found calling ST helps since they have a separate line for confirmed bookings. Much easier than trying to call for a Cat A ticket :)

When you say working overseas, does that mean if you had an online business, which ONLY sold/shipped outside of the UAE, that it would be doable on that license? Or do you not need a license if say, you were running a business in your home country, where the online component was registered in that country, and all stock was produced and sold o/s? Been trying to find info about this and it seems difficult to get a clear answer. Basically, I would be desigining a product but it would be made and sold by someone else outside of the UAE, in their country under their trading rules. Do I need a license even for that??

So stupid, especially after Tamweel, you'd think they'd learn but no, people can be so selfish and not think about anyone else. I am really having a dislike for these inconsiderate smokers, especially the ones who just shrug their shoulders and smirk when caught smoking in the toilets on the plane. Blood-y slefish and damn risky considering half the time nowhere to land! At least in a building you can try get down the stairs if it gets really bad. Is it just me or are people who smoke becoming increasingly 'who cares' about no smoking rules? I catch way more people than I used to... and they just. Don't. Care! Think it's about time they start chucking them in jail on the first offence, slap on the wrist obviously isn't working...

Glad you sorted it, was a bit concerned it may have been a waitlisted Cat C... that's the only time I've ever seen 'standby' written on mine... when there was a '0' under the Cat C/Cat D/Spec Offer column it means they won't immediately process a Cat C and you go on the waitlist... always worth checking, don't want to get sent away... As I understood it, Canadians are having a harder time witht he visas lately, did you go to the visa services at HQ or did you have to go to the office at the freight building? (Just behind hq?)

Excuse me, "useless EK stewardesses"? Pardon me, didn't realise elevator repair was in their job description now...? What a silly comment! :/ I believe they are departing non a380 flights from there in the initial phases, since it is so busy, but there are only 4 or so gates open so some issues are to be expected. It's an extension of gate space not a whole new terminals, hence the name Concourse. Eventually it will be A380 only. People complain about train transfer but most big airports have them these days... fyi flight staff have no access privileges to coded doors that's why they couldn't do anything. If you look the airbridges have emergency stairs and there ARE stairs to the tarmac (crew use them to come up to the plane from bus) I am sure given time things will go more smoothly, it is one of the world's biggest buildings after all, nothing runs 100% to plan <em>edited by SkyKitty on 03/02/2013</em>
