No. I realise that it makes a difference to those who do, but staying in hotels is damn lonely when you do it for 3/4 of the year. When I lived at home I pretty much did everything around the house though, since my mum was ill. Not the same as kids, but not exactly a picnic either. Tried earplugs but I tend to sleep on my side so earplugs didn't work for me. iPod with a speaker for 'white noise' seems to help though... My point was not to have a whinge but that those whose DHs travel may not be having a fun time as some might think they are... it's like the old saying about pilots "If only I made half as much money as the passengers think I do and had half as much fun as my wife thinks I do" ;) edited by SkyKitty on 15/11/2012

Oh yeah to add insult to injury I don't even get paid to work holidays, unlike everyone in the office!! Supposedly it comes under our 'base salary'. Funny, because when it comes to things like ID card we are suddenly 'govt employees', but not for getting Eid/Ramadan/Islamic NY pay..... hmmmmm

It's funny how many people think staying in hotels is all glam and relaxation... my mother used to make the same comments about 'time to yourself, luxury, no responsibilities' when I was at home and flying. in reality, it often goes like this Arrive at hotel, room not ready, wait. Room ready, lug suitcase to room. Furthest from lifts, naturally. Inspect room for lax cleaning/anything left behind/psycho killers in closet Unpack, find room for everything in weird-shaped hotel bathroom After 14hrs on the plane and 4-6hrs 'transit time' have shower. Shower is cold/sprays in face/scalding hot Call hotel maintenance. It will take 1hr to come fix. Give up and go to sleep. Bed is lumpy/too soft/smells funny. Want own bed. Drift off to sleep. Eventually. Housekeeping bangs on door, despite Do Not Disturb Sign. Cannot fall back asleep. Call for room service, wait. Food awful and expensive. Think about home cooking I am missing out on. Nothing in mini bar. Wish I had that wine that is in fridge at home. Try again to sleep. Couple in room next door proceed to have noisy fun. Wish was at home. Parents never do this ;) Jetlagged and awake at 4am. Nothing on tv but church and home shopping. Wish for extensive DVDs and/or cat which are both at home. Back to sleep. Housekeeping is now at rooms opposite and vacuuming loudly. Sigh. Drift off, 30mins before wake-up call. Phone rings. Get up, attempt to iron uniform. Hotel iron is either non-existent or filthy. Wish mum was here to do it. :) Pack bag, lug downstairs, check out. Going home. Yay!!! Lol.... okay, so it's not ALWAYS like this, but very often. Yes, even in so-called '5 star' hotels. Nothing like home, that's for sure!!! Hubby is probably trying to go to sleep and wishing to be woken up by the kids jumping on the bed rather than housekeeping who have a really annoying habit of just walking in....! :P

Np, I had a heck of a time finding it when I first arrived because their own map had it as being near to Crowne Plaza (which it is not!) Unless there are 2, but I've never seen one near Crowne.... Good to know they are open, since I am waiting on my renewed license and my free grape vouchers!! :D

At first, I was thinking, "Whhhhaaaat?" A blonde Bond?" but then I watched Casino Royale and he was rough as in it... which is kind of the point, since he was not a 00-agent then.... Just gets better. Yes, Daniel Craig for me!

Mrsb you just made me teary! I think some of the people getting married today could do to follow that example...! I think a lot rush in to the 'love' aspect without thinking of the 'practical' aspect... Good luck to the OP, it must be very difficult to make these decisions in what to some might seem a short time.

Hi, sorry this happened! We're told to advise passengers to email customer (dot) affairs (at) emirates (dot) com (this is for duty free purchases/issues only, not a general line) give them your name, flight details, seat number etc.... you said you no longer have the receipt- did you buy using cash or card? If you used card they will have a record of it so let them know the name on the card (if different to normal name) and maybe the bank it came from.... They should be able to direct you from there. HTH!

Flydiver, I guess it depends on the curriculum/level of the class/teacher? And how many students in the class etc etc... a bigger class would probably cost less because they are getting less one on one time I would suppose. If there's only a few with one teacher I could understand why the fees are higher. IIRC my nephew's class only had 6 students and they got quite a lot of one on one time with the teacher (who was Japanese) to work on technique. If it's just a class for fun/fitness it's probably not as full on as one that is designed to compete later on. This is stuff OP probably wants to find out so she can make a decision.

No problem- just a thought, check with DU if the same applies to iPhone. I'm using a Samsung so not sure about iPhone.... but it should be the same. FYI the WoW recharge gives you 50dhs= 125mB 100dhs= 750mB 200dhs= 2gB all 30 day validity It's good for me because when I know I need more I just buy a bigger card, if I'll be away most of the month I just get a 20dhs card. Easy as :P ETA: APN is nothing too complex, it's basically just the profile info of the network (Access Point Name) usually they will talk you through it, you just enter each bit of info in the section they tell you to. They want you to delete it because it might be clashing, but if you travel back to the UK and want to keep using it, I would keep it. You can ask the Etisalat tech about maybe using manual network setting, if that makes sense? So you would manually select o2 in the UK then back to Etisalat when returning to UAE. I don't have iPhone so maybe some of the details aren't entirely correct and someone who has one may know better :P edited by SkyKitty on 08/11/2012

Al Barsha vet clinic has an online pet store now, I personally haven't bought food but aquarium supplies , but so far the service is good and since they are with a vet they;re the only pet shop I really feel ok buying from. I went in there once and they had a giant macaw, the lady said people keep asking to buy him but they want to make sure he goes to someone committed to giving the care the bird needs, so they've refused everyone so far as they just seem to want a 'cool' pet. (The store is called 'Pet's Necessities')

I had a similar thing awhile back, I found the Etisalat prepaid service (Wasel) to be quite complicated, as you had to buy recharge then they deducted the amount monthly. They didn't have settings for my phone either, so I ended up switching to Du. You just buy the recharge amount for the data you want and instead of texting 131 you text 135 for data and it's instantly there. I think I pay 20dhs for 40mb. Wayyy easier than Etisalat. Hopefully you can sort it out, but if not, consider switching to Du. None of this 'subscribing' nonsense, you just use the voucher for whichever service you require whether it be text/calls or data.

TDB, lol, way back before the OH&S police took the fun out of work, at night we used to race the baggage carts at the airport. We'd wait until the flights had departed or been hangared for the night, and drive them across the (empty) parking apron. We got taught how to drive them, in case they were short handed on shifts and needed the help. One night, they were teaching us to drive them the first time (quite badly, I might add- us, not them) bunny hopping all over the place and doing very badly at towing empty baggage carts. I'd just managed to get to the middle of the apron and stalled it, and all the cart banged into each other making a horrendous racket :P Lo and behold all of a sudden we looked up to see an audience watching from the terminal building & clapping. Turns out there was a private charter flight coming in to pick up about 40 passengers which night ops had forgotten to tell us about, the travel rep had let them in to the lounge and as we'd been having our lesson the plane had arrived and the crew had been watching us as they taxiied in. The arrival call was "XX Operations, this is -----, Nice driving!" Took me awhile to live that one down! Not long after that the HR department found out about the late night lessons and put a stop to it, even though the guy teaching us was a certified ramp trainer and qualified to sign us off. Was fun while it lasted and definitely a help when someone called in sick, as we could do that as well as regular duties if needed. I think golf buggies are a LOT easier, but baggage carts go faster :)

I would check carefully re: Etihad bus, since I have seen them weighing and tagging baggage in the Chelsea Tower location. It implies that the bags are sent direct to screening and then onto the plane, so it's possible on arrival in DXB that you would not have access to your bags as they may b put right on the bus from the plane, if that makes sense... as for sectors being cancelled following a no-show- that's not airlines being greedy, it's a long standing protocol for security. Historically, there are reasons for this since in the past people booked on multi-sector trips then no-showed, as a means to get something onto the plane which should not be there. Is also why your bags are offloaded if you miss a flight.

They would want each piece separately so to see the weight for OH&S reasons. As stated, the max per piece is 32kg or the baggage guys aren't allowed to lift it. Over 23kg's gets you a 'Heavy' sticker. You can have 3 bags up to your 46kgs as long as no one bag exceeds the 32, anything over 23 will get the tag. So two bags of 23 ok or 3 of 15 should be fine. Pretty sure I saw NYX in Lifestyle at Dubai Mall as well. I think the prices are a bit steep here considering what they sell for in US/Oz but still cheap compared to a lot of brands. Revlon is also very cheap here compared to back home, the basic lipstick is around 40dhs which is about half what it is in Australia. (Even less in Duty Free- 32-36dhs) I got a really nice eye pencil for 30dhs which would def be about $20 back home.

And some passengers are surprised that the plane looks like a rubbish tip on arrival despite the crew taking rubbish bags around several times...! Once had a woman (despite us explaining that she can dispose of dirty diapers in the trashbin in the lavatory only) come into the galley while we were busy, and place a crappy diaper in our trash compactor. Unfortunately no-one saw her do it and one of the juniors put a load of cans in and pressed the button.... We knew it was her as she was the onyl one with a baby on board, the seniors let her have it I can tell you. It was so bad I had to put on gloves and try remove the mess. I felt more sorry for the poor engineers who were going to have to take it apart. Another time a guy handed me a meal tray, luckily I always look at it first, had a USED SYRINGE sitting on it poking out from under a napkin. I may or may not have let me professionalism slip a little and given him a good telling off for that one.... Boggles the mind!!!! I have actually had the debate with some people that "No I am not actually your maid" when they told me I should kneel on the floor and clean up after them! Sorry I am not, I can bring a trash bag and you can hand me the rubbish but if you are capable of bending down to put it on the floor then you care capable of picking it back up! I would never dream to just intentionally drop my litter everywhere. In a food court is a different story, I put things on my tray but I leave it on the table now since someone once told me if I do it myself and so does everyone, that they will et rid of the guy whose job it is to clear the tables. So I leave that, but I don't drop it all over the floor! That is def one of the things that frustrates me about Dubai. I took visitors on desert safari and was horrified to see litter all over the beautiful dunes, we had to crop so many of our photos so that they were halfway nice :(

Not saying the hotel was right, but how do we know the woman who was 'snubbed' isn't only telling her side of the story- I've seen complaint letters come in about some of my colleagues who were only very polite and lovely to passengers, only to have the passengers say horrible things about them when in fact the only one being rude and name calling were the passenger themselves.... sometimes people only present their best side, especially to the media. How do we know the bride to be wasn't a 'Bridezilla' and totally p!ssed off the wedding planner who only had her word and didn't say what the real issue was? Wouldn't be the first time a story of 'bad service' has turned out to be the receiver of 'bad service' was actually the source of negativity in the first place? maybe by 'this type of people' the planner was referring to behaviour...? Just presenting another possibility here..... ;)

Depending on area she lives, she could go also to to the Pavilion in Downtown Dubai (nearby the Palace and Qarmadeen Hotels) they often have movie screenings etc and she could go surf net or write there and have lunch/coffee, they have wifi, books there etc it's designed for creative types (not sure about art but last time I was there they had ads for exhibits so they may be able to hook her up with some events etc)

Not true, Sydney has assistance for elderly/infirm etc, I see them taking them through a separate line all the time. In some cases it might mean you need to ask the airline for MAAS- "Meet and Assist' to be noted on your booking. Someone will meet you at the door and take you through the process. To the poster whose son is autistic- you could possibly try this and explain the difficulty he has- e.g. afraid of crpwds/loud noises etc... if in an American airport, ask to see a Complaints Resolution Officer- they are trained to deal with those passengers and their families who have a disability and have any issue/trouble at the airport- whether that be from the side of the passengers, or the staff in trying to explain what they are/are not allowed to do (one common example is customer with diability has a preferred transfer to seat technique requiring crew assistance but which is not deemed safe for the crew- therefore the CRO is called to explain to the passenger why the crew cannot do it and try to find alternatives. As for crew saying no to holding babies, in some airlines it's policy, that crew do not hold children under any circumstance unless administering first aid/CPR, in others it is the prerogative of the crew member. If they say no, ask if it is airline policy, if not then ask if another would be willing to hold baby for you. Unfortunately, it is their right to say no if they feel uncomfortable. Sadly precedent has been set in the past when children were held by non-family and got injured... then the crew were in worlds of trouble despite it not being intentional. HTH

Lapis sounds adorable! If you can't find a home, I own fish (including a Betta) and can take him for you. I currently have my Betta in an 8 gallon tank and he loves it. Thinking to upgrade to a bigger community tank in a few months so would then use the 8gal for another Betta, the other is used to sharing with his tank mates (non Bettas!) I am off on a trip later today though so don't stress if I can't reply to any post right away.... Can I ask why you are looking for new homes?

I'm sort of surprised she is gunning for the airline staff when the first ones he would have passed were security. In the past at various airlines I've worked for, the procedure was only to do a headcount when the plane was not connected to a gate lounge, since passengers passed through an electronic pass reader that would be assumed to have gotten the count as people went through. However, I would also count the number of kids in a family and make sure the passes matched. Still, I think this was a chain of failures, rather than any one person/company. Error chains happen, they have learnt from it. I was a little bit bemused by her comment of him ending up dead, obviously the kid was smart enough to make his way through the airport, onto a plane and to Rome so I am guessing he's smart enough to work out how to get back again or to ask for help? I know things can and do happen, but, enough of the dramatics, please...! By the sounds of it he'd tagged onto another family anyway, I'm sure once they realised they would have looked after him had no one noticed he was on the flight.

Some people are more genetically predisposed to be, err, smellier. Not that it's an excuse, but some just aren't taught and don't know any better. Workshops would be good ,but considering the shifts they work do you think the employers really care? I remember a driver once telling me that out of the 5 or so companies that work under the RTA Taxis umbrella, there is one that they don't like as that company is not very nice to their drivers and has a lot of 'bad eggs' giving them a bad name. Once I did a charter flight to a remote Australian community, it was quite difficult as many of the passengers had never flown before, were actual true to life nomadic travellers and smelled quite...fragrant.... had an interesting conversation with an older Aboriginal man on the flight who worked in social affairs and he told me that to many 'bush' folk (which he grew up as) that "white fellas" smell very strong to them (since we tend to use perfume/deodorant etc) and it's just as bad for them as body odour/natural bush living smell is to everyone else.... Sorry for the drift.... I don't agree it;s the shifts or uniforms though because I've gone in cabs where the driver team obviously cares for the vehicle and uses their cleaning allowance to buy air fresheners/tissues etc to make the cab nice...

Post is not in any way official, as I don't work in security, but logically one would assume a disposable Bic-type razor would be ok, for the reasons you ladies have already stated. However, we all know that Dubai is not alway the home of logic! ;) JC, if you are travelling on EK the crew would almost certainly provide you one if you asked discreetly. Depends what you want to buy. If you're looking for a voucher/gift card, Westfield ones are good as she can use it at a few major shopping centres in Perth. Another is Gold Class cinema tickets, which since they can be a bit expensive, a lot of people won't have very often so can be a nice treat. Event Cinemas.com.au is one chain, Hoyts is another. Depends which suburb she is in I suppose. Keturah Day Spa is a popular one in Perth for treatments etc

Difference being that drinking and drugs don't contribute to society, having a family that will grow up to become useful members of the community does contribute in a positive way. But that is a whole other discussion.

It's true though, it majorly annoys me that I have to pay for other's crappy choices. e.g. smoking, drinking, drugs etc... yes I choose to eat junk food sometimes, but I also pay for my own health cover and don't rely on the public system... I couldn't care less if someone wants to eat themselves to the size of a house IF they don't then expect the public system to pay for that (think fire dept having to get cranes in to lift them out of the house etc) or, if someone wants to drink themselves stupid, up to them but don't expect me to be happy about paying for their rehab....

I don't think anyone is complaining about those who are obese through no fault of their own, eg illness. I am sure there are some who would tell me off for not going to the gym as much as I should, or having a sweet tooth. But I take personal responsibility and pay for insurance to cover my health if anything should go wrong as a result of my choices. I don't expect the system to take care of me for anything except for emergencies.... I think there is also a difference between loving yourself as you are & respecting your body, as opposing to just not giving a sh!t.. and masking it as 'self acceptance'

for a real good dim sum feed, try Tim Ho Wan (the original in Mongkok) no reservations just show up. However you can end up waiting a long time so you could try the newer outlets at IFC or the other one (forgot the location) Stanley is quite nice for lunch, they can get the airport train to HK Central then a bus to Stanley... Peak nice for views, especially at night when clear. Star Ferry for a cheap way across the harbour and good views (about $2- no need to pay for a guided cruise unless you want dinner) Walk along the Avenue of Stars near Tsim Tsa Shui and see the Bruce Lee statue etc....

Could you perhaps ask teacher to have a word with mum (about the boy being made to wait after school?) Perhaps she could contact the mother and say she has noticed him waiting around and it's not acceptable... not sure what the school rules are, it's same for my nephews. If they don't get picked up they go to the office and someone calls their mum/dad

Funny though, how many see commenting on the weight of clearly obese people is not acceptable, where commenting on the weight of 'skinny' people is.... ergo, the "manga Girl" thread about the Ukranian cartoon character. I looked like her (body wise) in my teens, I ate like a *** but could not gain weight until my early 20's... yet complete strangers thought it appropriate to come up and tell me to get help for my 'anorexia'... If she is in the public eye then she has to expect that she is opening herself to criticism, in the same way that celebrities do. It comes with the territory (not saying it's right though)
