Yeah, I had a thought that. But, too bad if you're not rostered a trip. Staff are always the last to get on, even with confirmed tickets if it's a war zone. But... we had stories coming from Libya etc recently, where the airport staff for EK took in the stranded ones until they coulf get on flights out to safe areas. I guess it would be the same here. And if something big did kick off, I am sure the crew evacuating people would go out and come back and need to be replaced... though probably they would put crew on to flights not to their own country to prevent anyone running off and leaving short crewed.... that would mean the flight couldn't come back again. Colleague of mine did one of the last flights out of Iraq before Gulf War 2 started, she said it was actualyl very calm. They flew in, there were no pillows, no food, no drinks, nothing. everyone got on, they rushed quickly to check everything, then they left. no fighting or pushing like you may imagine.... and of course, that'a only commerical flights. Military are prepared for things like this. After the Bali bombings, the Australian government chartered 747s to pick up people trying to get home. All the crew worked for free. I had several friends who did those trips. Same with after the London bombings as well.

Since she probably has not 'done' a lot of Dubai yet... - desert safari (she would have done this as part of induction, but still) - overnight/weekend trip to Hatta or day trip to Oman/Musandam on the dhows - afternoon tea at Burj Al Arab/Ladies' night at Atmosphere, Burj Khalifa - Ski Dubai/Mall of the Emirates Shopping/Spa/Dinner at Kempinski - Friday brunch - morning at Wafi Mall - Cultural tour, Bastikiya, Jumeirah Mosque etc - Atlantis/Aquaventure/Palm You don't have to go super-formal to graduation, just something corporate appropriate/smart. You can bring flowers and photos are allowed. She will graduate with several batches (usually about 5), they will come on on stage so there is chance to take photos during, the nafter if you like you can take pics together. After they put out some tea/coffee and small snacks. Crew have a rostered day off for this. If she is lucky, next day off. Metro is easy to get around as others have said, depending on her location. If she is in the newer building (I won't mention the name, but it is a bit out of town) they do have a shuttle bus to Mall of the Emirates, and to Motor City. Or you can taket he regular Emirates crew bus to the headquarter and take taxi/metro from there. (have photocopy of daughter i.d. just in case)

Sandy, try contacting them again and seeing what the hold time is. I personally can't remember but I think they may pass items onto Dubai Police after a certain amount of time... possible it was found but passed the time limit so has been sent on?

I don't have anything concrete as such (mainly the documents, registered with embassy etc). I have family at home who are willing to pay up or wire money if needed, and I'm in the process of saving up a "bolt fund". I have friends who were here during tha last Gulf War, they said our company offered for those with families to go home on unpaid leave, or anyone else who really wanted to, and she said not many actually did, mainly those with small kids. So I owuld guess they would do the same. Interesting question though, I will have to ask. Had to laugh at the comment re: not being worried until thought of HR dept in charge of it! Haha, I kind of feel that way too!!!

I think once you know how to look after them, you won't need to be around all the time. There is a UAE aquarium forum which I think has a section on turtles also. you can ask here on how to care for them and what you will need, and if the time comes to find them a new home I am sure one of the reef uae members will know someone to take them [url='>www.reefuae.com[/url'> [url=http://www.tropicalfishkeeping.com/vivariums-reptiles/'>link[/url'> edited by SkyKitty on 21/09/2012

No she wasn't in 'public' but somone of her profile should assume whenever she is not indoors, there is opportunity for photos to be taken. Sure it's her 'right' to sunbathe topless but in her position, is it wise? probably not... There will always be paparazzi around her, better not to give them the opportunity don't you think?

According to Dubai Airports website: The Emirates lost and found number is +971 4 0505 7584 / 7538. They handle all lost property on all Emirates flights globally, and also in Dubai Terminal 3 as it only handles Emirates flights. They are open during normal UAE business hours. Emirates lost and found department can also be contacted via email at [email protected] It can take awhile though because if a lost item like an iPad/camera/phoine is found, the crew cannot touch it but have to wait for airport police to come and pick up the item. If they haven't found it, generally the cleaners do. So try lodging a report with the Lost & Found so they know to expect it. I would guess they would try contact the shift boss for that particular cleaning crew and let them know to keep an eye out for it... It would also depend (hate to say it) if another passenger saw it and decided to 'liberate' it (had this happen on a flight in Oz once, we combed the aircraft for a camera but could onyl conclude someone else had seen it on the seat while disembarking and pinched it) Hopefully in your case it'll be found, good luck! Does DH have one of those 'find my iPad' type apps installed? Could try that also... in case the above has happened...! Edit: If you're still in T3, head all the way left (when facing towards the metro/taxis) and you'll see a round kiosk/desk, it may say hotels or something on it but it's also the Lost and Found... there will be a very bored looking person manning it ;) edited by SkyKitty on 20/09/2012

Yep, sick and tired of it too. I once got lectured after getting into a cab at Dubai Mall, he went on and on and on about how short the ride was, I have been wait 2 hour blah blah blah... I said to him, well you know it's a long wait at Dubai Mall, don't come pick up passengers there then. He then proceeded to abuse me totally for the entire trip home! I ended up telling him in no uncertain terms to please shut up and stop talking to me or I would call the RTA. Normally I give extra fare if it's only going to be 10dhs I give 15 but since he was such a ----- I insisted on waiting for my change. He actually threw it at me so I reported him!! They CANNOT refuse the fare, if they try then tell him you will call the RTA. They change their tune pretty fast then.... Now, I only ever tell the destination AFTER I am sitting in the cab. If they give me lip I make them stop immediately and I get out. One guy was so rude I got out before we had left Dubai Mall car park, serves him right he waited 2 hours, was a total jerk then was made to leave as they wouldn't let him get the next person! If they hate their job so much they should go swap places with a labourer! COntrasting to him I had a lovely driver last week, he was so nice, he said no problem about the short ride, "sometimes its short fare sometimes big, inshallah, it is not for me to decide I just drive" Told him he should teach his colleagues that and gave him a nice tip!! When he dropped me off there was a girl waiting for a cab to go to Abu Dhabi so he got a nice big fare after that, karma for sure!!! :)

Lol and everyone wonders why flights here never leave on time! Frustrates me no end, wish they would just leave without the stragglers, maybe then some people would learn to check in on time!! But hey ho, it's not up to me... (Of course, I am not talking about delayed flights that are the fault of the airport/airline, I'm talking about the 'Duty Free Warriors' who check in t-30mins then think they've got hours to shop) I remember a few years ago, we were closing check in, printed off the paperwork, I'd just walked in the door from handing over the dispatch sheet to the captain and this passenger was at the gate demanding to be let on... explained that departure time is DEPARTURE time, not 'get to the gate' time and he would not be getting on the flight. He yelled at me "You are making me very unhappy!" to which I replied, "it's a tough choice sir, make one person unhappy or bring the plane back and make 500 people unhappy- try to check in at the time on your ticket next time!" Ok maybe not most professional but he really got my goat, was funny to see the ensuing tantrum though because we'd all seen him wandering around the shops for the past hour, ignoring all the personal PA's for him to come to the gate.... I bet he was on time for the next one though!

Yes, can't hurt to have the notation in your booking, that way they can see that you have a letter. If you will go into the second time period while away then best to get the approval for the return flight before you travel, if that makes sense. )Do you mean 31.5 or 31+5 as in 36??) lol

Two things when I looked at the Solomon Islands pics: 1. Kate never wears things baggy around the middle, always elegantly fitted. Pregnant? Making us think she is pregnant? who knows lol but I wouldn't be surprised 2. On that plush private jet is she really just lounging in her PJ's like everyone else, then changing and doing her hair before landing to look nice for pics? :)

Yes difficult if ladies are wearing abaya/losse clothing, it has happened before but really the only person they are not helping is themselves. While all EK aircraft have equipment to assist in birth if required, a plane is NOT a hospital and crew are not doctors. Though EK have had a few cases of crew delivering babies onboard. Sometimes a nurse/doctor happened to be on the flight, other times not. If there is complications of course the risk can be huge. To the OP, it can also depend on your pregnancy. If it's straightforward you can go longer before needing a certificate. But if there have been any issues (high blood pressure etc) the requirement can get stricter. It also changes if it's a multiple pregnancy. of course the airport manual is what they will look at, at check in. Our (crew) manual says: - No cert or letter is req up to the end of the 28th week of Uncomplicated Single Pregnancy - When pregnancy has entered the 29th week, medical cert or letter issued by a Qualified Doctor or Midwife stating fitness to fly and confirming expected date of delivery to fly is required. - No approval from Medical Services is required up to the end of the 36th week. So the letter/cert and approval are two separate things. You can have a letter under certain cases, which does not need approval from Medical Department, and in other cases you must have both letter AND approval by EK Medical dept. Of course as always I defer to th airport staff on the day since they have responsibility to accept carriage and any decision comes down to them, however hopefully this gives you an idea of what crew work with. As always my post is not officially by EK and you should contact them direct to discuss your individual circumstance :)

Yes mum very happy. However I think she maybe has a different one than what you are looking for- hers does not vacuum, it is purely a steam cleaner that is the shape of vacuum (if that makes sense) We originally bought it because we had white Italian marble floors which got very dirty with all of dad's work boots in the house (much as we told him no shoes lol) We used it to do the floors, grouting, bathrooms and to steam all the soft furnishings/sofas etc which it was very good at. But, we did buy this more than 5yrs ago so perhaps the models are different now. I didn't know they can also vacuum now. We used to do both, worth it though because the steaming was to keep the floor clean, vacuum was for dust.

Any more interested parties for the 'dvd loan'?? Also, for any ladies wanting to buy, I checked out Virgin Megastore in DM. They had a range of Jane Austen including: the new S&S= 70dhs the Jane Austen collection (about 260dhs) the 1995 (Colin Firth) P&P spec Ed= 90dhs and so on. Seems the prices are a bit better than they used to be. They also had shows like Lark Rise to Candleford in both individual seasons and the whole set box (which was about 600dhs!!!)

Someone mentioned here before that the laws here about use-by/expiry dates are different. E.g. the milk may last for 2 weeks, like home, but they are only allowed to put a date of 4 or 5 days on it. I haven't really noticed much difference between any of the brans here, to be honest. I prefer milk from back home but I think that is because the cows are getting better food (i.e. grass etc)

Wow, thats lots longer, I always thought about 30 was 'old age' for a dolphin. Come to think of it, the ones at Monkey Mia in western Australia did have a few older ones in the 35-40 range, back when I was small. I think they are averaging shorter lifespans now though, last time I visited the eldest regular one coming was probably in the 20's. I wonder if it's the same for dolphins in general?

was just wondering how long they live usually... was trying to present the other side that not ALL facilities are bad or cruel, sometimes its necessary to keep the animals. Of course they should not be taking them from the wild just for that purpose, I would think most good places are not doing this, Sea World in Australia reportedly had animals that were only in need of care or captive bred rather than ones taken from the wild... does anyone know if this is true? On the other hand many of these parks etc provide care and rehabilitation for wild injured animals which otherwise could not be afforded without the tourism dollars.... it's kind of a which is the lesser evil... is it right to keep wild animals to bring visitors if it means conservation funding, or right not to keep any at all but not have any facility to care for injured/sick animals?? what do you think on that subject? not a wind up, just wondering how much of the good being done gets funded by the 'entertainment value' side of things.... With what you mentioned about captive bred animals... does anyone know for sure about the ones at Dolphinarium? I thought the two eldest had come from another park overseas and were not wild... but maybe I heard that wrong when I went edited by SkyKitty on 11/09/2012

just wanted to ask if dolphins normally live to more than about 20 or 30 years, because I know that a couple of the ones at Dolphinarium are in the region of 25+ years old... they couldn't be that unhappy or badly off if they are that old surely? Of course it'd be better for animals to live in their natural wild state, but to be honest some actually are better off (generally speaking) for reasons like, endangerment, illness or injury and cannot viably stay or go back to the wild. (Like the dolphin whose tail was cut off and it was given a prosthetic tail- for sure it would not do well in open ocean as it needed constant monitoring and refitting)

No the new terminal across from T3. I don't think Maktoum/Dubai World is opening for another few years, except for some cargo flights that are already there. One of the pilots told me the other day that eventually anything that's not Emirates or its affiliated airlines will go out that way, inc FlyDubai. I don't know if that's true but if so I wonder if it will mean it's not worth flying loco since DXW is so far away.... unless of course they're going to add-on the metro line that already exists...

None in supermarkets either, not even cloudy ammonia for cleaning. I actually need pure ammonia, no colour. Doesn't have to be a huge amount, 250ml should do it. Lol... I used to work as a cleaner and I still wore corporate clothes to my interview. Although I was cleaning and doing domestic chores, I was working in a corporate office so that was what they expected. Since it ended up that I may be called in after hours to work at functions, that got me the job. They saw that I could 'scrub up'for corporate cleaning (read: clearing dishes etc at fancy meetings) in that case I just wore a nice blouse/shirt and a skirt. Even if your industry is casual, short of a ballgown, I don't think you can ever be too overdressed for an interview. (I know people in the mining/gas industry who would still wear at least a shirt & trousers/skirt to interview.)

I wouldn't rely on there being extra seats. Lately, I've had flights where the expected load has been half full, only for us to turn up at the gate an hour alter and be told "full to the brim". The only way to absolutely guarantee you have the space is to book the extra seats (if you decide on Y) that way, you ówn'the seat and don't have to compete with EVERYONE else who will, I promise you, be eyeing off any extra seat as soon as they board. If it's really an extra seat, it's first in, best dressed. If you have the boarding card for that seat, you can tell everyone else to take a hike ;) Of course you don't have to book extra, but you take that chance...

my rule is 'Love it or leave it'. If I'm not totally in love with something when |I try it on, then I will leave it. If I'm still thinking about something later, then I'll go back. I also try to work out if a new item will go with other things I own. (To make at least 3 different outfits) Cost per wear comes into it as well. Sunglasses, always expensive since I have prescriptions, and my health fund pays so I can afford a nice pair each year. (I keep the old one to have a few for variety)\ Shoes, it really depends. Too cheap, usually never get work. Same with too expensive, because then I'm scared to wear them. So my shoes sit somewhere in the middle. Maybe $50 a pair, except for sandals which are usually from random, different places. Having said that, I bought a fab dress from, of all places, Carrfour last month and have worn it to death!! I got a lovely bag on one of my trips that I liked the style of, only to have a girl rush up to me in the mall asking where I got this "one-off Gucci!" Turns out it's an exact replica of one of their famous bamboo handle bags (not a knockoff though, if you know what I mean) so it looks about 9 thousand dirhams but probably cost about 300 ;)

Minor correction- it's not permitted to heat passenger food in the microwaves. This change has been in effect for some time now, due to safety hazards. Bring your food in tupperware and get some of those foil takeaway containers, bring them empty. We get some onboard but they are usually all used for the service. Then, when you are ready, transfer the food into these and the crew can heat them in the ovens. As mentioned let the crew know soonish (but not during boarding if you can help it, they are usually quite busy) that you have your own food and it needs to be heated. You could always write a small note with your details (allergies, meds, name etc) and hand this to the senior in your cabin. (stops any mix ups then as you wrote it yourself) Other than that, sounds like you are pretty prepared. Just wanted to let you know about the microwave thing as we can get into a lot fo trouble for using it now. A minority of crew might agree to do it but they are really not allowed, so please don't put them in a hard spot by asking... :) happy travels

[b'>Be careful what you carry in for people that you don't know. I would always open the items or boxes first. [/b'> Couldn't agree more. *IF* I carry/collect anything (usually for my flatmate or other, well-known-to-me crew) I tell them that I will 100% be opening and inspecting the contents of any box/parcel, no electronics or liquids, and it is a non-negotiable of my bringing anything from home for them. All have been happy for me to do so. Usually is just personal stuff from home (clothes etc) or things ordered online, the odd grocery item etc... But, I probably wouldn't carry something for a stranger, unless it was something I purchased and packed myself. There were cases in history where people have carried things for others, with disastrous results. You can never be too careful.

Hi Maroosh, (just logged in today after long absence from the board and saw your post) I am a huge Jane Austen/BBC fan. I do know when I was looking that I saw *some* DVDs in C4 at MOE, and also in Virgin Megastore (they were a bit more expensive, though). Borders *may* have them but I am not 100% sure. Do they have to be in Dubai? Possible to order from Amazon or will they not ship here? Anyway, I have a few if you would like to borrow. I have: Wives & Daughters (BBC) 301mins Period: c1860's Sense & Sensibility (BBC) 207mins Period c1810's (not the Kate Winslet version, but still lovely and in some aspects, better) Persuasion (I think ITV) with Rupert Penry-Jones as Cpt Wentworth Jane Austen Collection (3 disc) by Time Life: Emma (starring Kate Beckinsale) Northanger Abbey Mansfield Park (starring Billie Piper) all running for approx 295mins Emma (BBC) With Romola Garai & Johnny-Lee Miller (Angelina's ex hubby!) in fact I really, really loved this version. 229mins If you are interested in borrowing any just drop me a line. I can mail to you or perhaps drop at your work if not too far from me :) I also love Downton Abbey and can't wait for season three! :D

I agree, it does seem to be getting worse. But I think relative to each place, not just Dubai. A lot of the rude behaviour is magnified, for me, onboard the plane since people are tired, stuck and can't go anywhere. But you also get the nice ones too. Yesterday I was carrying about five bulky (but not heavy) bags from the supermarket and a random lady asked me if I wanted her to carry some! I said no, thank you, since I bought it I should carry it, but was nice of her to offer. Especially considering she was wearing a sari with a long trailing scarf so probably would have been harder for her to carry them than for me to... Now when I'm at the mall I pretend to myself that those pushy people are pinballs in a pinball machine and make a"ding ding" noise to myself to remind myself to laugh and not take it seriously... although if it's a purposeful push and not just due to crowds I will say something- like to the guy earlier today who was in a rush who jumped right in front of me as I was walking along and made me trip! I get if you're in a rush, but at least say "excuse me" before cutting in!

Could be coming from Zinc at Crowne Plaza... or the nightclub at the Monarch. Though if been happening for weeks could be a residence as the clubs were not meant to be having music on during Ramadan...

We also had this problem with our two, they loved to just fling litter everywhere. They also started to "miss" the tray and we tried the tray with rim and the one with a hood/door. Worked for awhile but then the litter flinging started again. Tried everything, then we saw something online called "Litter Kwitter". Google it, you will laugh but if you can successfuly train your kitties it is great! They both got the hang of it, but eventually one preferred still to go in the tray, the other- he used the toilet (and still does, 3 years later) like a person. Use much less litter and less smell. They even prefer it since the water in the toilet covers the smells. All you need to do is flush things away. If you work long hours you can put a 'backup' tray in case they decide the toilet is too full. In most cases they will use the toilet first and tray second. It is the weirdest, funniest thing but the one which still does it loves to use the toilet and won't touch his brother's litter tray at all. Litter Kwitter was quite expensive in pet store, we bought one (gently used and thoroughly cleaned) from ebay for about $30. Well worth since we were spending at least $12 a week on litters...
