Ah, right. I thought maybe there was more to it than I saw. ETA: If you mean the computer thing, I saw that. The pilots discuss far, far more detail on other websites than what Jelly wrote here. So do cabin crew applicants, they talk about the interview, process, questions etc, it's nothing secret surely? <em>edited by SkyKitty on 17/08/2012</em>

It doesn't matter- if you have 'it' they will take you. Whatever 'it' is. The others are right, if he's got a guaranteed job he should take it. Especially if he's a newbie to flying. It's a total adjustment to the flying lifestyle, that and moving to a new country at the same time would be pretty overwhelming. On the other hand, it could be good to not know any better. It also depends on the airline we're talking. If it's a small regional, then maybe better to wait for EK. But if it's a big airline, it could be good. He needs to compare the overall package and draw up a list of pros and cons for each. That might help him decide. Also, is he pretty independent, has he travelled alone? Lived alone? If not then I would wonder if maybe moving o/s for a job could be a bit much. Age? He has to be 21 for Emirates. Also I would wonder if he has an actual interview, or only attending an 'open/assessment day'. They are not the same thing. And Emirates have not released interview schedule beyond Oct so I wouldn't think he would know already that he has an 'interview'- usually that only happens in countries where an agency is used and EK recruit directly in Australia. <em>edited by SkyKitty on 17/08/2012</em>

a) What letters and b) I don't think there's anything wrong with Jelly saying what her job title will be. The only specific thing I've ever been told about posting online is to be careful what you say and to be clear that you are speaking of your own opinion, not in any official capacity. In short, don't say anything you wouldn't be comfortable explaining to your manager. If there is a letter it's not gone to all departments. Feel free to email if you prefer sky kitty 0 1 at geeee mail dot com thanks c) Congrats Jelly! Be prepared to deal with a lot of (seemingly) silly questions from cabin crew (to be honest my CC coordinator is a gem and has helped me many times when CCSC or HR could not...) we appreciate them even though some may not seem like it...

I can't post it at the moment since I'm behind a firewall- thank goodness for access to EW- but Google Hyperbole and a Half. Click on the link to 'Alot'. Allie has the same grammar hang-ups as [b'>a lot [/b'>of us here. Very very funny stuff. If you are in need of a laugh I suggest this site. "How a Fish Ruined My Childhood" and "The God of Cake" are howlers. She's also done a really poignant piece on coping with depression, as only she can. Hilarious and sad at the same time, but defintely describes what many people feel.

You could try to Shop and Ship it, or perhaps try one of the other retailers which will ship. I know some US retailers do.... JadoPado aren't showing any Kindle but try giving them a call, maybe they can get one in for you? <em>edited by SkyKitty on 23/07/2012</em>

Johnny Rockets is good for a 'classic', but a little bit on the exxy side. FatBurger isn't too bad either, not sure if they deliver but there are outlets is both MOE and Dubai Mall. The satff sing your order when you're at the counter :) And GBK is great, I love they have 'different' burgers. For the Aussies/Kiwis, they do a Kiwiburger with avo etc

Hmmm definitely call them, maybe they changed the rule but if so they've done it overnight & I don't know about it yet! She should be able to tell you if it's fully booked or not, but they might not tell you exactly how many empty seats...

Ah, it sounds like he got confused and meant the actual aircraft seat... that you can't bring a car seat unless you book a seat as well? Argh, how frustrating! Well I've never seen anyone have an issue with an under 2 using a seat when booked, so long as they can sit up on their own... I would say just give them a quick call to reconfirm... [url=http://www.emirates.com/ae/english/flying/young_flyers/special_care/travelling_with_infants.aspx'>Flying EK with Young Children[/url'> [url=http://www.emirates.com/ae/english/help/faqs/FAQDetails.aspx?faqCategory=193385#faq2'>Infants[/url'> (Posted same time!) It says *may* travel onboard in car seat *if* a seat has been purchased to hold one. I have never been told that a child under 36months cannot sit in a seat which has been bought. I see it all the time, mum and dad don't want LO on their lap so they buy a seat. Many of them hold LO for takeoff and landing with the infant seatbelt but then LO sits in their own seat for meals, movies, sleep etc.... so I think it's saying that you have the choice to buy a seat and bring your LO's car seat to use. But that you can't just bring a car seat and hope there's a seat free. Hope that makes sense! <em>edited by SkyKitty on 22/07/2012</em>

Hmm, that's odd then! Have you tried calling to see if you get a different person? I would just try again at check-in, or if you checkin online 24hrs ahead your printed boarding pass *should* mention something about lounge access....

He can sit in the seat without a car seat, it's just recommended as most parents find it easier. If he can sit up on his own then he is allowed to use the regular seat with the regular seat belt. Wish I knew this was the issue earlier I could have cleared it up for you :( Some just feel the lap belt on the seat isn't enough, you can still use the infant loop seatbelt for takeoff and landing since he is under 2. Pretty much if he is standing in front of you and your are playing with/interacting with him, most crew will leave you to it so long as the seatbelt sign is off. The issue is when kids are actually sitting on/lying on the floor. So if he is just standing & walking around in front of you (supervised) then in my personal, non-official opinion it should be ok. The crew would generally only ask you to pick him up if a) seatbelt sign is on or b) he is actually sitting/lying on the floor. HTH <em>edited by SkyKitty on 22/07/2012</em>

I believe all Golds can use the Lounge when travelling themselves, (dependent on capacity) however the class of travel becomes relevant when bringing guests in... [url=http://www.skywards.com/Member_Benefits.aspx?SkinID=2'>link[/url'> Scroll down to benefits, it lists lounge access there. Guests need to be on the same flight and the member has to be in Biz or First, not in Economy for that flight. It may be that the computer is calculating your miles in advance so says you have reached the Gold tier but it will not become active until you have 'flown' the miles... which is probably what they mean when they say you have to get to Melbourne first. If they activate the Gold tier now, and you cancelled the flight, it's kind of silly for them to then have to say, hey, we need to take it back now :P <em>edited by SkyKitty on 22/07/2012</em>

I think it's just saying that you don't need any more miles to get Gold (because you already have it?) I don't know for sure but since you are Gold, and you have yet to fly then you *should* be able to use the lounge, have you tried going online to 'Manage My Booking' and see what it says? Normally on the boarding pass next to or near your SW number it says something like "Lounge: Gold" or similar. If not you can always try when you check in, explain to them you just achieved Gold status, they have additional cards which are lounge invites which they could print off. Check-in should be able to look you up and see that you are indeed Gold status. Of course I am just reasoning here and might be wrong, lol...

On that same note, do you then expect a discount at the cinema or on a bus since there might be kids also using the service? Technically you are paying to go from A to B, which is still being provided, not for a particular level of noise. That can never be guaranteed. As I said, by all means if you feel that kids are being 'disruptive', ask the crew to intervene, however if the child is just crying/tired there is not really anything they can do. If the child is kicking/hitting your seat, address the parent directly. I will bring it to the attention of the parent that the child is disturbing others, and ask if we can do anything to help. sometimes taking the kids for a walk around the plane distracts them for awhile and burns off energy.

Right, well I see what you mean of course, but then it has been decided that kids under 2 are not required to have a seat. If you feel that the kids are not behaving then feel free to have a word to mum. however be prepared to cop it back if she is having a bad day... one person's idea of badly behaved kids is not the same as another's. "Kids running amok" is a different thing to kids just being tired or crying. If they are running in the aisles and parents are not controlling them, then bring it to the attnetion of the crew. I shut down that kind of behaviour asap as it's not safe for either the child or other passengers (kids running into crew carrying hot drinks comes to mind) Unfortunately there's not a lot that can be done about crying babies, that is what they do and generally it can't be helped. Try talking to the kid that is bothering you, sometimes they are just picking up on the vibes of annoyed passengers around them and respond well to a different face. Business class is not different, after all parents do buy seats for their children (as they are entitled to do) if you feel differently then you are free to choose an airline which doesn't allow kids in Business Class.... which are limited for obvious reasons! I'm no fan of ill-mannered kids either but there is a difference between bad manners and kids being, well, kids. Some people do forget they were once kids as well. I know I was only an angel on the plane because I loved to fly, however I sure gave my mother h#ll at the supermarket and am sure everyone else thought I was a demon child!!!

I think there is a book about this kind of thing by an editor, it was either Marie Clare or Vogue, she wrote a book about capsule wardrobe, the lady was on Project Runway. Nina something I think her name was... You could also try to Google for 'capsule wardrobe'. Generally the more things you can mix and match, the less you need. It also depends on your lifestyle. A mother staying at home obviously needs different clothes than a single woman working all the time. you really need to work out what clothes you wear and what you don't then figure out what they have in common. If you're afraid to get rid of them completely, pick out anything you haven't worn recently (that is in season) and pack it away for a few months... if you don't go to unpack it then you probably won't use it again and can let it go. when you buy new clothes make sure they mix with at least 3 other things you already own so you can make outfits or don't buy it (a few 'trend' items each season wn't hurt)

It is generally recognised by many aviation authorities that the safest method is to buy a seat and use a car seat for children under the age of 2, however due to costs many cannot afford or choose not to. Their choice I guess. I'm not sure what you mean by other people getting a discount because someone else is travelling with kids- if a seat is empty generally it's up for grabs once everyone has boarded unless of course the crew need to move someone for a specific reason (medical case, oxygen limitations, someone seated incorrectly/double seating allocation)... so not sure why a discount is needed since you could move to a spare row/seat also?

Will check and see if I can find the specific reference. I know 100%% that it says 'sleeping on the floor' is not allowed, and every time I do the SEP training they drill into us that kids cannot sit/play on the floor, so I would guess they are getting it from somewhere (GCAA perhaps?) I've seen little kids get hurt from being stepped on (one was sleeping on the floor after we had asked mum not to) under a blanket, no bassinette up, and other passenger decided to take a shortcut across to the other aisle and stepped on the baby... :( anyway as some of you have mentioned the easiest option is to buy a seat but if not possible do as mentioned and ask if the check in can block some seats for 'last sale' (I believe it is possible) and they will try not to allocate. If you check in online and there is a block of 3 seats you could try reserving one window and one aisle leaving a middle vacant but as I always say you take a bit of risk with that move. So try to ask if they can block a middle for you if possible...

you could try a professional, if you call your GP perhaps they can refer you to someone. I haven't heard of any 'fear of flying' courses in Dubai, I know BA used to do one but then of course you'd need to get to the UK for it. Also Google search Virgin Fearless Flyers, not sure if they still do it but they had an app that you could put on your phone that gives tips on flying when fearful. Another tactic I read of was to draw a line on a piece of paper, the paper represents stepping over your fear. You do this whenever you leave the house and leave it behind. Then on the day you travel you put the paper down at the aircraft door and step over the line onto the plane. (Obviously you try to preboard or board at a time where you won't feel rushed/watched by others) I think this was done in conjunction with some other kind of counselling or therapy though. You could try a short flight first, say to Doha and back. You won't have much time to sit and worry since pretty much you take off, level off then start descent again (Might be worse, it depends on the person if long or short flight is better) It helps to identify what exactly it is that worries you about flying. Is there any event specifically that you can recall starting it off? Sometimes it's actually an underlying anxiety issue and the flying fear is just an outlet. You could also try Kinokuniya to see if there are any good books about the subject. Good luck and ask if you have any questions

If going by the book, then really shouldn't be on the floor. Sleeping, definitely a no-no (but, as people here will tel lyou, have various experience with this- it really does depend on the crew but for safety reasons it's not meant to be done- by anyone, not just babies) Sitting and playing on the floor, well, technically not allowed either. It's a hard one because we know how hard it is to sit with a child that size on your knee but on the other at the end of the day if something happens we are asked, did you advise the passenger being on floor is not allowed? If not we can be in trouble... but again real life is not like the training school. As other posters have said, if you can get extra seats, great, if not then you may be more comfortable if you can put the armrests up. Then again, the bulkhead seat does not have another row in front so you don't have to worry about hitting/kicking of the seat in front and can bend down more easily to get stuff from your bags. You could always take a pillow from home to lay over your laps then put LO on to sleep? Tough one I know...

Update for the flying mums & dads. Got to have a look recently and the basinette seats are: 6D&G, 7A&K, 21B&J, 21D&G and I *think* 22D&G (but have to double check this one) there are no bassinettes in the 'couple seats' which are always E&F seats. So you may be better of requesting for a G&J seats arrangement in a bassinette row if you want to be able to reach across to each other.

Sorry ladies- have been away and just saw this looking back through posts. @ishehere- Masjid, is that mosque? Or the area around the mosque? Sorry am not 'up' with all the terms yet, lol @ccmom- HI, I have a few friends living in Bur Dubai, they love it. The buildings out that way are apparently very popular with crew. @MonkeyFace, I had thought about that (did it last year for a day with a Muslim friend) since my flying roster is quite busy I won't fast for safety reasons but I could perhaps try it on a day off. If I can go to the SMCCU EW Iftar then I'll try to fast before that. (Still waiting to see if I have that day off or not) @Marroosh - the WTC things sounds great, I just read that work are organising a group to go, so again if I am in town that day I will go along to that. How very kind of you, I would love to help with that. I am still waiting on my August work roster but it should be coming in the next few days. Thanks Marroosh @admin- thanks, this is just what I was looking for! Am hoping that I get this day off work so I can attend. Perhaps I can even wear my abaya (though some of the ladies here might need to teach me how to do it properly if I am not, lol) edited by SkyKitty on 21/07/2012

If you booked them online, they are a seating request only, not guaranteed seats (actually, seating allocations are never 100% guaranteed, since ground staff can override them and move people for certain reasons) Are you travelling with children? Sometimes it's necessary to split groups due to oxygen mask requirements, other times it could be to keep very young children together or to seat someone with a medical condition in certain seats (some seats are preferable for example close to lavatory, an aisle seat close to the medical power outlet- some passengers need all three) If you notice this happens when you check in online, try to get to the airport early and see if they can change it back, or re-seat you together elsewhere. The later you get to the airport, the higher chance you can be split up since they allocate first come first served if people haven't picked any seats. And then of course if someone travels last minute who is higher tier frequent flyer, they can sometimes have a preferred seat in the system which is given to them, sucks if it's you who loses a seat but they reward the most frequent travellers with perks like that. If all else fails, you can try to swap with other people once onboard.

Since the lap belt 'is' the plane belt, if it is tight enough she shouldn't be able to wriggle down, often kids sit too far forward on the seats so if their bottom is right back in the seat, tightening it up should stop that from happening. Never let them sit on pillows for takeoff/ladning, either. They can slide right out for sure. During cruise should be ok, to prop them up to better see the tv. :)

Bulkhead rows are good but to be honest you may prefer to use a regular seat since most armrests in bulkheads don't move- you can't raise it so LO can lie across both your and DH's laps... also again you won't be allowed to let him lie/sit on the floor so the extra space might not be as useful as you would guess... only you can decide which you prefer but I hear a lot of mums say theyd rather just have had normal seats when the LO is too big for bassinette. (He will be, at 12kgs)

I think Sals meant that she's only redeemed miles in Business and hasn't earnt on those, since they were 'bought' with miles to begin with... is that correct? Tier miles are only earnt on EK services, not through code share or other partners, and cannot be redeemed, they keep your status level or bump you to the next one if you pass the threshold. I think it's 25,000 for silver and 50,000 for Gold (but possible that it's changed, all this is explained on the Skywards.com website) so if you are unclear about anything else, check there. They usually have answers to the most frequent questions. Don't forget you can also use the family membership and enrol kids once they are over 2 in Skysurfers.

Hi- just popped in quickly- will reply to all others later on... According to my manual, yes, so long as it can be fitted without blocking the tv of the person behind (should be ok according to the pics I have) But approved for Economy seats only (won't work in J/F due to the shape of the seat) So long as it has the appropriate labels, it should be fine. Not a lot of crew have seen them though so it's an idea to let them know you have it in case they don't recognise it. Perhaps call and ask them to double check for you since I do have a revision to my manual which I haven't had a chance to read yet and don't know if this has changed (Shouldn't have though) CARES is handy since it's mostly approved for use in the US and Australia as well, I think possibly Canada and UK too. But always check direct with the airline. Happy travels!

never, went through three boxes and it never solved the problem. Either as you have, or it would suddenly just stop showing random channel info, or all of the onscreen tv guide, soooo annoying! Also, often the times would be out (switched itself to KSA) and the audio would be off the lip synch which drove us crazy! since i travel I wanted to program recordings and Etisalat say they cannot offer the highest box except on eLife, well it was cr@p on Elife as well as eVision so I cancelled it. Changed to OSN via the lady at the kiosk in Festival City Hyperpanda and couldn't be happier with it, works perfectly and has not missed a show except for when the power went out once. Hardly their fault. If you are on the top package you also get 10 Box Office coupons per month (movies average 15dhs each) so far it has enough selection for me. You also get OSN Play where you can watch certain content on your computer and I think it's coming to Ipad this month. (Content selection varies according to you subscribed package)

Well I don't make the rules but they do have criteria for searching, unfortunately flights from certain parts of the world are under more scrutiny than others. if you are arriving from dubai/middle east then of course there will be larger amount of ladies covering. they can't exactly exempt you just for that, then there is opportunity for people will ill will to use that to their advantage. so they have to do it to everyone, even if one group or another feels they are being picked on. For example in AUstralia flights coming from Indonesia get gone through way more than from other places, because historically they have the highest amount of non compliance with quarantine and customs regulations. nothing to do with where the people are from... If you mum feels picked on she can ask for the formal complaint procedure and make an official complaint, otherwise as you say fly through different airport. ETA: I once made a complaint at a UK airport because the person doing the search went into places in my clothes a) the didnt inform me of in advance and b) are not necessary to be searched in a frisk. There's ways and means to complain if you feel you are not being treated fairly. <em>edited by SkyKitty on 11/07/2012</em>

Check if you haver to change terminals, at CDG there is a shuttle bus which loops between terminals but takes a little while to get between the first and the last stop depending on the time, traffic etc. Google CDG airport, there's a map and if you are leaving from the 'satellite' (old 60's terminal) its a bit of way out. But I'm pretty sure that's allocated to other airlines and AF flights are grouped together.

DP, most cats instinctively know where to 'go'- if you provide her a tray (if that's what you want her to do) and are consistent with the location she will quickly get the idea. If you see her sniffing around or looking like she's about to do her thing... pick her up and put her in the tray. She'll get the idea. Never punish/scold her if you find a mess- she'll have forgotten about it by the time you find it and won't know why she's being told off. She'll think she's being told off for doing what comes naturally. So what we used to do was as soon as we found a mess, we showed it to her then put her back in the tray. Later once she's used to using a litter tray, you can move on to toilet training if you want. I'm not kidding, it's possible to toilet train a cat to use a human loo....!

Vet visit, and if she's old enough and not 'done', get her spayed! Don't want more babies running around.. :P If you're a first time cat owner, Feline Friends are good to ask for advice. Since she is a rescue, they might be able to help with some costs... you could also consider once she is settled adopting a friend for her :) Watch out, they grow on you. Come home to find your DH on the sofa with kitty on his lap, for sure!!

It would likely come under routine maintenance, but the general idea is to avoid the sand so that's why normally you don't fly in a sandstorm... As that's exactly what it will do- sandblast the leading edges of the wings, the nose, etc etc...

I wouldn't say always, but generally yes, it shouldn't upset the apple cart too much. Sandstorm, it really depends on the severity, since very bad ones can damage the engines they tend to avoid taking off/landing right in the middle of it if it's on the heavy scale... ETA: I can see a couple of flights were indeed holding for a few 'laps', so I gues they were waiting for the worst of it to pass. Can get a bit congested since you need a bigger gap between arrivals when the weather is marginal... <em>edited by SkyKitty on 09/07/2012</em>

Miss F, from what I can see looks like ops normal, I can see aircraft on the screen both arriving and departing... they're coming from over water, past sharjah, turning over ras al khor road, over the 611 to land... departing straight out over the shoreline.. <em>edited by SkyKitty on 09/07/2012</em>

Clearing quite quickly, blue skies appearing again... At the moment it looks like the flights are coming over the 611 road to land... <em>edited by SkyKitty on 09/07/2012</em>
