Ah, I think they have changed the name then. No problem, it saved me on my first week of flying when I managed to turn all of my white work shirts pink, and no time to send them to the drycleaner!!! I always keep a pack or two at home now. I'm sure there's probably a 'home remedy' that does the same thing, but this seems to do the trick just fine. Glad to hear it worked...

I have SMS security on my Australian bank accounts. It will text me a code whenever I send any amount to an account which is not mine or linked to my account. I can have the bank pre-approve certain billers (e.g. phone company etc) but those are all manually initiated by me. So they can nick money if they want but they can only send it to people I owe money to anyway, effectively paying my bills! LOL... Of course this isn't very good if you're one of those people who loses your phone all the time, but the online banking gives you the option to disable this and then change your password if you need to, until you can register another number. They have just sent me an email about something called "Voice Security" which sounds interesting... On a few occasions the NBD texts have proved my case when H&M's eftpos machine keeps deducting amounts twice (usually on weekends) and they swear they only swiped it once!

Until you can get the handrail, I would try to tell your LO that the stairs are a no-no unless mummy or daddy are there too. Or show him/her how to get down them by using the wall (if there is one) and staying away from the side. To be honest this is something I'd address with the LL (if there is one) if renting to people with kids they really should have sorted that out.

That was to do with bovine excephalitis (mad cow disease) which I *think* they can now screen for? It would be best to mention, anyway. Can't hurt to go, the worst they will do is say no and at least you tried..

Mum used to put a small bowl of honey in the back yard... sure they were still in the yard but they stayed in that one spot and didn't come looking in the house! Or, mix honey, water and some Ant Rid... but again if you have kids/dogs might not be able to...

I get that you say not to use physical force in this country- but sorry as a woman if a man grabs jold of me I can only guess one thing, and I will do whatever it takes to get him to let go!! He shouldn't be touching a woman in an Islamic country anyway! I hardly think they would throw a woman in jail for hitting back at a man who grabs at her, imagine the extremely bad press that would generate for tourism! Then again.... I'm not even going to go there but you know what I am thinking of...

Beebers that is ridiculous! Any guy does that to me I'm soprry but he's going to find himself getting kicked somehwere he won't like! No one touches me without my permission, ever. On the smart-alec side, when guys like this ask me does my husband have a job I say yes he works for the police. Gets rid of them quick smart!

Haven't noticed any film... other than the usual dust that my apartment gets! Well I'm not sure it's their proper use but I know a few asthmatics and some of them have this for when they sleep, rather than running the shower etc. I know it was sitting next to a children's nebuliser with a Penguin face mask on it. At the back near the cash desk. Maybe it's not what you're looking for but if you can find the pharmacy on the Dubai Mall map try calling them about it... they can probably explain it better!

You mean the kind that makes steam, similar to what an asthmatic uses? I saw one in the pharmacy on LG floor Dubai Mall last week, you could add Vick's to it as well. It's the one near the exchange & Lifestyle. Otherwise if you want a regular one that uses vibration and not heat, Home Centre had them for 179dhs. I have one and it goes all night on a full tank. You can add scented oils etc. So far no problem using tap or bottled water. I've also seen them in Sharaf, Plug-Ins etc but more expensive.

Lol I meant yes, I'm tempted to say something! I do remember on one occasion a girl (yes she was stunning with model legs) wearing the tiniest shorts I have ever seen, a super tight strapless white top and 7inch heels coming out of the lobby of a crew building early one morning- I was staying at a friends' and on my way to work- and it was during Ramadan. I said to her, "You're seriously going outside in THAT? It's Ramadan" and she pretended not to understand me. Pity all crew are required to speak passable English. No wonder some passengers think we are all like that... geez

Maybe regulations is a bit harsh but even a general rule like, in public places (e.g. malls, hotels, cinema etc) then clothing should be at least with a sleeve to mid upper arm and to the knee, no sheer over bare skin (but sheers in layers ok) and strappy tops only in places such as gyms, beach, pool etc. Which is pretty much what they suggest now but is not enforced. At least if there was a set length then security can say, your dress needs to be at the knee. Or your top is sleeveless put on a cardigan. They do it in Rome when you visit the Vatican, and no one seems to have an issue with it, so why not here? Would't be that hard to advertise and still provides a lot of scope for individual style/dress. I own plenty of strappy/tank tops but putting a cardi over them when going to the mall is not a huge hardship, nor should it be in an Islamic country.

I wonder the same thing- they do not want people wearing 'indecent' clothes, yet the stores are selling the very things that most Muslims would describe as indecent! (Just walk around and Forever 21 and look at the length of the shorts!) I'm by no means a prude but I have either had to buy 3/4 length pants or go without shorts, there seems to be no in between. Just want a good pair of knee length denim shorts, think I can find any? Have noticed lots of maxi skirts around lately but that is way more to do with trends than shops wanting to sell appropriate to the region they are in. If you don't sell it- they can't buy it! Of course you still get tourists bringing own clothes or residents shopping o/s on holiday but I think by reducing the amount of skimp sold in stores it would go a long way.

But they do make PAs regarding the laws about importation of currency, on food & animal restrictions, visas, drug smuggling etc... Such PAs exist on flights into Australia, US, Singapore, KL, Indonesia etc etc etc.... why not one for dress?

Actually a lot of people book the flight that comes with a stopover having no idea that Dubai even exists (yes there are still people who have never heard of Dubai) or that it is even a Muslim place because the glossy brochures often show people in bikinis on the beach. Not something that most people would associate with an Islamic nation I'm sure most of you would agree. So i think the marketing departments of some companies are also to blame for making ti seem okay to stroll around in tiny swimsuits on the beach, no wonder the tourists then think short shorts in the mall are okay.

The 'free' minutes this is a bit of a crock... when you read the fine print, you only get to use the free minutes once your Wasel balance reaches zero. So they're kinda not free, IYKWIM.... pain in the butt as I takes ages to use up my balance. Free minutes should be just that... you get that many before they start charging. Sneaks!

Actually I think the majority of the 'bad' dressers ARE tourists.... saw a busload of them getting out near Dubai Mall and it was a skimp-fest to say the least. Definitely not residents. During Ramadan I'll also nicely tell people on the plane coming into Dubai if they might want to try covering up a little more- nothing worse than people doing the reverse journey saying "but none of you girls said anything to us coming in" I know it's not my job but I actually think the airlines should have to make an announcement at the very least just before and during Ramadan to the effect that it is a religious occasion and appropriate dress should be worn... even to the step of having an attachment to confirmation emails for travel during that period outlining the dos and donts. I remember getting a 'checklist' when I arrived.... haven't seen those for awhile!

I think also that if a visiting couple cannot hold hands (and nothing else) in public then why should men from the region (or women for that matter) be allowed to? It confuses the visitors because they don't understand the reasons behind it. Of course we shouldn't be flouting the laws etc but I do think that some of the terms handed out to people for doing things normal in their country (peck on the cheek, hand holding etc) have been very long compared to ones who get suspended sentence for assualt, theft etc... is there a reason for this I don't know about?

Lol Simples! I was gonna say the same about the group of what can onyl be described as tall long legged blonde model-types in Dubai Mall earlier today... skirts so short I thought they were wearing very nice belts! I had told my visitors to dress a bit more conservatively than they would at home but they were so p!ssed off to see girls in tank dresses and short shorts saying they could have just worn what they normally wore- because they saw no one getting told off for it they figured I was just being OTT..... can't win!

I would call Sharaf/Jacky's/Plug-Ins with the model number of the DU box and ask. I bet people buy universal remotes all the time after losing them, they should know which ones are compatible. On the other front, has it possibly slid under/behind something you haven't looked? Or have you put it in the cupboard/fridge by mistake? I was once on the phone distracted and put my car keys in the freezer and the (sealed) milk in my gym bag... lol

Get a packet of 'Run Away' by Dylon. Usually in the laundry section of big supermarkets. There's another brand, similar but can't recall the name. In a red box, 2 packets. Make sure to get the one for either whites or colours depending on what you are trying to get the dye out of.

1. What's a freej? 2. Yeah I can imagine that kind of convo would be awkward. I suppose I would just be honest and say, I wanted to participate in the Ramadan observance and thought this would be a nice way to show that I respect what the aim of Ramadan is about. Or I suppose I could say that I want to know what it is like so I can form my own opinion about it and not go by what the media says etc... Flower, I am interested to know what kind of national costumes you have, which is your favourite? I really want to try kimono but my Japanese friends say they are very expensive, so I would wait until I went to Japan as they cater for tourist wanting to try it. Apparently it is a very big honour for someone to give you a kimono as a gift. <em>edited by SkyKitty on 09/06/2012</em>

Thanks for the tip, I don't tend to wear 'loads' of makeup anyway, during the day maybe just a neutral lipstick and that's pretty much it. Planning to research a bit on how to wear the shayla... I really don't want any of the Muslim ladies here to get the wrong idea, I'm not trying to poke fun or anything, I really am just curious as to how it is to go about the daily life wearing an abaya. Like are some things harder to do, how is it in the summer, what it feels like to be covered up, etc. FYI I was raised religious myself and we were not supposed to be very uncovered either, this is just another level of that. Even now I wear knee length dresses mininum and never a strappy top in the daytime without a cardigan. Maybe a dress with straps but I prefer a least a sleev at night and always a cover-up of some kind...

Yes I get that point, but as I said that was more for a souvenir, I wouldn't go wearing it to a mosque. And if having some individuality is a bad thing, then why do they make them this way? Almost every abaya shop I see has ones with trimmings on them. Is an expat wearing a trimmed abaya any worse than an Emirati woman wearing an abaya dripping with rhinestones? (Something I see a lot). Genuine question.

Well for me I have noticed in the last few years I am less 'ladylike' than I was before, and I don't necessarily like that. Once a friend and I did a project where we could only wear dresses or skirts for a whole month. I felt, I don't know, more feminine and less 'harsh', if that makes sense, and I'm curious if an abaya would do the same. And I do notice in certain situations that people treat ladies in abaya differently (not necessarily a bad thing) but I also would like local people to know that not all young expat women are falling out of bars wearing tiny dresses or picking up men every night, as the sterotype goes. Some of us do respect the culture and I just figured trying an abaya during Ramadan might be a nice way to show that

PS to the person who posted about 'Wisal'- thank you! I'd been wondering what it was called for so long. I got some as a 'souvenir'. I probably wouldn't wear it all the time but to try it once or twice or for a special 'Dubai' occasion it'll be nice. At the least, a nice thing to take back with me or to buy for friends.

Monkey I'd like to think so but they always seem to tell I am an Aussie right even before I open my mouth! lol. (Yes I know there are plenty of 'aussie' muslims) I may or may not also have succumbed to a really cute abaya I saw in a shop yesterday that had pink tassels on the sleeves. Ok so probably not the point of abaya but I love pink! (Wouldn't wear that one to the mosque lol) Actually I'm wondering that- sometimes you see really cute abayas with patterns, colours and stones on them- if you go to a mosque are you meant to wear a really plain one? Like I know the primary purpose is a religious one, so is it 'bad' to wear a (not flashy) but embellished abaya, or does it only really matter if you were going for a specific event.... I am guessing the abayas worn here are much more complex than say, ones worn in Saudi.

This type of questioning is what I'm worried about- people thinking I am trying it for a 'wrong' reason when really I just see it as a learning opportunity. I might just do it around the house or to a specific place... like Jumeirah or SZ mosque. I'd love to go back as I was still too culture-shocked and tired to appreciate it at the time (only 2 days after stepping off the plane!)

My family made fun of me for it when I was back home speaking to a Filipino lady on the phone, they don't understand how hard it is for some people to understand Aussies here, it was just a habit but they swear I am doing it on purpose. Why do I want to? I guess it's the same reason I tried traditional dress in Thailand and when I attended a wedding in Bali I wore what everyone else wore. Wearing the clothing common to a culture/place I think is a different way to get a perspective on what it's like to live in that culture. While I know abayas are most usually worn for religious reasons, I do know that not all ladies wear them because they are muslim (you could debate how I can tell for hours, but I mostly can) Also it would be interesting to see if it makes me feel any different, or if people treat me any differently due to what I am wearing (I am not talking about queue-jumping etc just because I maybe could get away with it, I don't think anyone should push in) When I worked as a domestic worker I got treated a lot differently in those working clothes than I did in my off days or when I was wearing a suit going for a job interview or work experience. I don't want to be one of those expats who lives here ten years and knows nothing about local customs or ways. I don't think I would ever be a Muslim but I went to Turkey and covered my hair every time I went to a church or mosque- even though they told us it was optional. I guess I really am just curious. Plus, some abayas look very comfortable and I think they are quite elegant when worn with care.

I read it as, she admires people who try it for themselves. not that they are in any way 'better'? For the scarf/shayla wearing ladies, there were some pretty coloured pashmina scarves in HyperPanda today 9.95dhs for two... nice slight sheen to them, not ugly scratchy ones.

Well I know in the case of my company, if you live out you have to take a copy of the contract to the company and show them before they release the accommodation allowance. Since they also process our visas, they must take all this into account as well. (There are a lot of us) :)

I have been there too! As the others have said, it is HIM with the issue, not you! He wants you to feel like there is something 'wrong' with you, because he knows you are too strong and independent for him! It's a very good thing you are learning now to stand up for yourself and say no, it takes some women many years to learn this skill. You mention that you've been treated for depression in the past. I would suggest that if there is any major life event that brought this on (e.g. death of close relative or some other trauma) then a counsellor can be a good option. At the time it might not seem connected but every so often in a low point past habits/thought patterns can come back and get to us again... I once used an excellent book called 'Reinventing Your Life' it deals with CBT but first how you may have got into negative thinking in the first place, in order that you can recognise the signs that it is coming back. I am sure you could shop and ship this is bookstores here don't have it. Otherwise I think Kinokuniya in Dubai Mall are very good at ordering books in from overseas. [url='>http://www.amazon.com/Reinventing-Your-Life-Breakthough-Behavior/dp/0452272041/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339188471&sr=8-1[/url'>

I'm guessing large companies would get approval anyway, me & my colleagues are all employed on a ;single basis' (even if married) and start out in share accommodation either own or leased by the company. then later on you can apply to live out (priority if married) and from then on you sort your own tenancy arrangements. So I suppose if two ladies show up wanting to rent a 2 bed apt with our company name on it, they would already know why and wouldn't be an issue....at least, that's how I'm guessing it works because plenty do it.

Well you can do a search and see if any of your neighbours are silly enough to have an unsecured connection..... ;) I have wifi at home so mine is a wifi only model (the 3G one was wayyyy more expensive) and I find mostly I can get by when away from home because so many places have free wifi. And for the times when not, I just use a prepaid Du card on my little old phone that has internet ability, I can still do the important stuff like google for phone numbers, facebook etc... Eventually when I update my phone I'll get a prepaid data plan and just tether it to my Tab when I need to.

Splash and Iconic have some up to date stuff at not too bad prices. H&M you pay more here. I like Pull&Bear, Bershka and Stradivarius, but not sure if those are Euro brands. Zara I know we pay the same as elsewhere (maybe 5dhs difference) as I looked in the US and Europe for an item thinking it would be cheaper and it wasn't. Mango pretty okay too, New Look etc more expensive than UK but I do see most of the same range. I would kill for Sportsgirl, Valleygirl, Ally Fashion, Dotti & Forever New from Oz!!
