Be very aware in Meadows 9 that there are always more Villas for rent available there due to owners getting tenants in and then suddenly saying before 12 month lease is up ( even after only a few months of signing) that they are wanting to sell it. Have had a COUPLE of friends who this happened to. They loved the villa they moved to, were very happy but a few months in the owner said this and they had to move at the end of the years lease and the owner would not even let them extend for 3 or 6 months. Sorry to put a dampner on it, you may have a great landlord but just be wary.

was there last year, the pollution is very bad, at times my eyes really hurt. You must be very careful with drinking and eating so I was advised not to take my kids youngest being 4 until they were older. Heard a really scary story from a friend who went there with an 18 month old who nearly died. Having said that there were people who I saw walking around with some small kids, just not very many..

yes agree with the Medical Insurance too, always had it in Australia, and feel that's its a very important thing. The dental coverage with it was excellent and worth while if you have kids. You never know when you may need it all of a sudden. We have deferred ours so can take it up when we go home again one day.

This is something I found on CNN yesterday which says that Aussie cities are some of the most expensive in the world these days. http://www.cnngo.com/explorations/life/shanghai-now-more-expensive-new-york-307238?hpt=hp_bn1 I have not been back for 3 years (in a few days to head down under and see for ourselves) but every one who has been back says it is. I would say that if we had stayed we would have had to go from a one income family to a two income family to be able to afford a better quality of life in regards to overseas trips, going out to nice restaurants etc...but on the other hand I believe that you can shop around at the smaller food stores, markets etc in Australia and can live quite economically if you want to. Days out are with the family to parks, sightseeing, doing out door stuff that don't cost a lot of money. Friends come over to dine more, inexpensive bbqs, people do not have the house lights, or air-con on all the time hence utilities are cheaper and people definitely spend less on water then here as Australians are brought up to conserve and know how to save water. Families don't take their kids to the movies every few weeks, only during the school hols and the kids don't miss out as they enjoy doing more things outside and playing with friends. Family holidays are spent travelling within your own state or going inter-state as there is so much of Australia to explore. On the whole I would say despite Australia becoming more expensive its how you want to live your life that's important and Australia is a wonderful safe country with an amazing lifestyle. Why else do we have thousands of people wanting to live there?

None of my children would have sat still when they were 2 and a half to watch a movie, my youngest the 4 yr old, goes to the movies now and enjoys them but still occasionally loses attention especially towards the end. When we were young there is no way we would have gone to the movie at that age, I understand that there are more movies for kids out now but what I don't understand is why we are in such a hurry for our kids to grow up and do things earlier than necessary. When our children were little ones my husband and I never went to the movies for a few years as we did not have a sitter to look after the kids, we would never have dreamed to take the kids with us as we knew they would disturb others around watching the movie and we would not enjoy it ourselves.

My children do Golf, Ballet, Gymnastics and then the free after school activities. The middle DD did not want to do the free activities last term as she said she was too tired. I respected her decision and she is the most active of them all. Compounded with no play dates on week days only on Thursdays but coping with school homework, I think that yes kids are over doing it. I hear some mums say "my children love it, they want to do it all". I'm sure this is with a lot of instigation from the parents too. Well said Singapore Sling, I think you need to have a medium with school work and after school activities or the kids get burnt out and grow to not enjoy what they do, you don't want it becoming a chore. I know what its like when I have to get her home after Gymnastics, have dinner, try and do a reader and then to bed. As I'm sure a lot of you experience its horrible waking them up in the morning and its something I don't enjoy doing but know I have to get them up for school when they are tired.

Yes my 4 year old DD has been going to Lisa Dance at Exhale for the past year and a half and loves it. She has a lot of friends who go there and all love it too! The concert is nice at the end of the year. You buy the block of lessons form Exhale and they sign the card every time you go to mark off whether you have used it or not. LisaDance DUbai is on Facebook so look them up.

My husband coming from the Asian background ( heaty, cooly foods etc) drives me crazy sometimes. Insists on having the water cooler not turned on to ice so its room temperature and when we dine out at restaurants room temp-bottled water is the way. Sorry, I still like my cold water in a hot country so will get my own and for visitors. Having said this will not let children eat ice cream if sick and they should have warm water if they have a cough or a dripping nose. I am Caucasian and my husband is Asian, so I was very sceptical when we got married but over the years I do believe there is merit in doing this. My mother-in-law will drink nothing else. I remember my Grandma had a neighbour in Australia many years ago from the UK originally who would only drink warm water. My grandma has since passed away but this lady is 90 I think and still going strong. Cold water? who knows....

Not everyone will agree but the cost of living is quite high here compaired to the uk esp eating and drinking which is hotel based .It took us a good couple of years to get the bargains worked out! Now we use vouchers drink in happy hours watch for deals, only because there is no way would i go pay 80.00 sterling each for a brunch in the uk(if they did them) but for some reason at first we did. Best way i found to save was convert everything i was going to buy into sterling. I have reduced our shopping bill and save far more. For years i never converted back to sterling but it keeps me in reality mode . Yes, I would definitely say that no all eating and drinking here in Dubai is "hotel based". There are many small restaurants you can go to that are quite economical. If you go to a brunch every Friday or a ladies night every week, yes that would be expensive, but really you can save quite a lot of money here if you put your head to it and don't go crazy in the shops when the sales are on as well.

What I mean is that it is crazily busy, chaotic, etc etc and that why anyone would want to shop there on a Friday. Basically anything sinister could have happened to the kids by themselves without parental supervision. I'm sure everyone has heard all the Dubai whispers about things that have happened at malls and MOE being one of them.

Definitely not, in fact we had an incident last week where my dd (9 in July ) with 3 other school friends wre invited to their classmates birthday to see a movie at MOE on Friday night. The other mothers and I dropped our daughters und the pretext that they would be looked after and chaperoned by an adult. On my dd returning home and talking about the party I found out that the mother after greeting us gave them their tickets and they went in and saw the movie by themselves. I'm sorry but this is unacceptable and irresponsible, 9 is very young and we all know what MOE I'd like on a Friday night, and why it's best to be avoided. Whether those kids sat there by themselves quietly or not, I am appalled that a parent would do that.

You can steam them and then with a little bit of garlic and olive oil, gently fry in frying pan or the other option with steamed vegetables which I love is to add sweet chilli sauce on top. Taste's delicious and gives a slight kick!

Thanks for this we are coming home for the first time in 3 years, 10 days in Melbourne and the rest in Hervey Bay where my parents live. I think we are going to freeze after not experiencing winter for so long. My only dread is one of my 3 getting sick. Wow, so cold in Brisbane, so I can expect it unfortunately to be quite cool in Hervey Bay then too? My parents are in WA/NT at the moment so can't tell me what the weather there is like at the moment.

Don't agree with the "buy" before you come over as the Aussie dollar is high at the moment so buying in the shops here will be so much fun for you, also as you said Australia is winter and the clothes you need are for summer now. Enjoy the shopping when you get here whilst still using the Aussie $.

I just had to add to that thread seeing as it was closed but that last comment really got to me! Maybe MM is just like anywhere else in Dubai but thats the whole idea with our comments so that it gets changed for the better and does not continue to stay "just like anywhere else in Dubai". What irked me more though was the person( can't remember the name) said that she/he was sure most of the people who had negative comments would still end up taking their kids there. Hello, I don't think so, I won't be for one until it improves and as many have already said they won't be either. Anyone else???? No I don't think that's the case. Those that have said they won't go back probably won't return. The problem is that it is very prevalent in this part of the world to completely ignore child safety. If a parent doesn't see the importance of buckling his or her child in an age appropriate car seat/restraint, then he or she will be completely oblivious to the nuances of child safety issues in play centres. There's a horrible sort of blaze-ness about it all in this part of the world, and if regulators don't step up to fill in the gap, then places like MM will continue to flourish unabated...until disaster strikes I'm afraid :( edited by lemondrops on 02/06/2011 well said Lemondrops, sums up exactly how I feel!

The rice wine I believe you would have to get from MMI or alcohol store. I bought some into the country with me as I use it a lot but like wine customs told me it had to be unopened and declared with the other stuff in our container.

Dubai Mall vouchers do not exist yet. I went to ask about them a few weeks back for the 2nd time since the Mall opened to be told this. However, this time they actually said that they have done some training in the vouchers and over the next few months will be implemented. About time really!

yes go past Grosvenor house on the road that goes the Marina side of JBR, but turn right into a road that is at the start of JBR ( once you have turned in you will see on your left Da Shi Di and Noodle House on that right corner is a creme/sand coloured electricity power building) continue heading towards beach ( Habtoor Grand Hotel will be on your left as well as Le Royal Meridien Hotel, but do not turn in here go straight) The road will veer to the left and just keep driving through I think 2 round abouts along the beach front until you pass the Hilton Hotel. The next hotel built into JBR will be the Sofitel Hotel. Rimal sector is above this and Paul's Cafe is just before the hotel. So park in the big bitumen car park next to the beach near the Sofitel and you can't go wrong. I hope my directions are not confusing but its not very hard to find. Along "The JBR Walk" there are signs telling you where the sectors are so you should have no problem finding it. I'm sure if you ask anyone where Rimal sector is they would know too. Good luck!

SA_Babe, yes i have children, two in fact. A 3 year old and a 6month old. I take them both there regulary, play with them, go with them everywhere there bathrooms, play area and all. My point is is that, we have to be vigilant as parents and not blame a particular establishment for trying to run a business. \ The back door has always been closed and locked everytime i have been there, yes people walk in and out, again i am with my children so dont see it as a problem. No i dont think that the stories in the paper about rape and abuse are false, however do we need to prosecute every man that we come in contact with because of these awful things that happen. They happen in other countries too, not just Dubai! I agree as parents we have to protect our precious babies, but again at what point does it stop??? Do we not allowed men into the play area with there children as there are areas in there that cant be seen? Or not let men into the whole play centre at all??? These men that were there, werent threatening, talking, approaching, or taking pictures of these children so why not leave them be and let them have there coffee in peace???? Bath, bed routine has began ill leave it at that. Each to there own! I think you have missed the point really. We are not men bashing we are merely saying it is a children's play centre and therefore people with children whether they be Mothers or FATHERS are more than welcome. Just not men or even women by themselves just going in there to eat or have a coffee. If your Aussie husband or my Aussie husband was in a play centre, here or any where in the world ( especially in Australia) without children, I would look at him weirdly and think why on earth would you want to do this? Its unusual despite the cultural differences and needs to be looked at by Management. Such a shame that there are so many issues and with summer holidays coming up. We really need more places like MM but they need to be run correctly so that we can take our children there to play in a safe environment. I think that living in Dubai people can become too complacent to what can occur around them especially when it comes to children. When your children in Dubai get spoken to by shop assistants, security guards or anyone who thinks they are cute you have to be vigilant and teach them stranger danger despite people meaning well. There has to be a medium. My 4 year old has been here since she was 14 months so is used to the attention she gets every where. If she was in MM and despite me teaching her about strangers and me being there I'm pretty sure like a lot of kids with enough coercion from someone meaning harm I would hate to see what happens if I lost sight of her for even a few minutes. Part of MM's problem sadly is that it is kind of a test case really. The first of its type here so its bound to be under scrutiny. It is a bit different than the other play centres already here. Did you all consider the same could happen at KZ? I have been there when the emergency door by the toilets has been unlocked and that leads straight to the carpark??? Im sure some of you don't realise this. I shudder to think what could happen there.

Its in the Rimal sector of JBR, basically above the big Paul's. Park in the car park beach side opposite Paul's walk up the stairs there into the centre of Rimal Sector JBR and it will be right in front of you.

I'm not worried if you have men going to have coffee or meetings there, but what concerns me is that anyone can walk in and out freely without being checked. For instance I went there, walked straight through the door, looked around, went upstairs and then came down out again and left the building and not once was I asked if I needed any help or what I was doing there. There should be a system where it gets monitored who comes and goes. Sorry, can you tell me what is the difference between having men go and have their coffee mornings there and someone walking in and out without being checked? I don't think there is a difference. If you say there should be a system to monitor who comes and goes ( and I agree whole heartedly) how can you allow people without children and sorry to say in particularly men to enter at all when its set up as a "children's play area? kks - Yes, these men are going to a cafe but that cafe is within a child's play area. I have been to many many indoor play areas over my childrens life spans in Australia and if there had been men eating at a cafe by themselves we as mothers would have asked management to tell them to leave as it would not have been appropriate.

I find this very worrying! If this had been in the Australia and a bunch of men went into the cafe and had their lunch at an indoor play centre the mothers would find this very unusual too. Its quite disappointing as the UAE is crying out for more play centres such as"Mini-Monsters and they can't seem to get it right! I will think seriously next time I take my child there if strange men are having their lunch.

If you know the risks, (which you quite obviously don't know how serious these risks are )why would you continue to use a tanning salon then? What's it like? and did you get a nice tan within 3-4 weeks? I've read the info on the website so aware of prices but I'm keen to here any feedback if you have used Tanning Zone and the results you got. TIA x And please, before anybody replies with you shouldn't go on a sunbed, they are dangerous and we live in Dubai so go out in the sun etc etc, I know the risks. edited by Holdfast on 29/05/2011

I would seriously consider not having it done on one so young if its a baby tooth. I am not a dentist but have had a root canal and its quite a traumatic process. Would you really want to subject one so young to that if its not necessary. I think it would be enough to turn them off dentists forever. Having said this I have heard of a few friends kids here who have had a root canal at the age of 7, the reason being, diet and no flouride in the water. Good luck with your decision.

You will never believe it ladies, I was at C4 Moe early this morning and doing the usual fruit and vege thing when who should be there. Our guy?? I nearly died of suprise. I change my mind about him after what I saw this morning. He was in his usual get up, and with his bag which he left on the floor. His hair actually looked quite nice and very clean ( compared to when hes exercising and he looked quite attractive too) but he was with a very attractive young Indian lady ( I think he is of an Indian background too). He was buying his fruit and veg and talking to her about Kim Chi( korean cabbage dish) just like you or I and I think he has a bit of a British accent. Seemed very normal, so I would say that he is just fanatical in his exercise regime! I will look at him differently next time I see him out and about walking. I was actually nearly tempted to tell him he is a very talked about man but could not bring myself too!

Amwaj Rotana at JBR has a deal I saw on the weekend for 365 dirhams per person including room, breakfast and choice of dinner in one of two restaurants. That's not bad!
