Ladies, I really hope you can help me with this one... We've just renewed our maid's contract, she has been with us for a year now. She is going on her vacation later this month. She's been in Dubai since 2010, working with another family for 2 years, but has not exited Dubai since her arrival in 2010. I'm getting a lot of conflicting advice about her vacation procedure etc. The embassy of Nepal have said that I will need to complete various lengthy forms/police reports & pay aed5000 security deposit & aed300 attestation. She will then need to take these documents to Kathmandu and pay nepali rupees 4500 to obtain a labour authorisation form which will allow her entry back into the UAE. She has said that we don't need to go through this procedure, as she arrived in 2010, and this requirement began from 2011, she just needs a no obligation letter from the embassy to be able to get the labour authorisation form (sharm) in Kathmandu. Any ideas??? :/ edited by Sprinkles 17 on 09/12/2013

Tea tree oil conditioner - apply lots to your DD's hair and comb through thoroughly in sections with a nit comb. I noticed in passing through Lulu's Al Barsha yesterday a few Tea Tree Oil Headlice products which I used previously in the UK - detangling lice repellent spray & shampoo/conditioner (I think!). They were right in the corner along the shampoo aisle. Good luck!

Includes scratching post, airline approved pet carrier, litter tray, 2 x bags of dry food, 9 x tins, 12 x pouches of wet food, catnip leaves & spray, 2x feeding/water bowls, Cat stain/odour remover & toys. We bought all of the above when we adopted two adorable kittens. Cost over aed 1200 new. Will accept aed 850. Have posted on classifieds as well :)

I had a similar problem with a Cobone deal recently. I emailed Ahlan Dubai & filed a complaint. I had an immediate response from them, and resolved the case within a couple of days. I also had all my money refunded back to me. This did take a few weeks, but it did get done! Email them on : [email protected] Good luck! :)

Hi Seamills, We recruited a Nepalese maid in November. She had already been in Dubai with another family for 2 years. We did not need to go to the embassy, we just went to DNRD with her cancellation papers & followed the usual process and only had to pay an extra aed 500 as she was already in the country. Apart from that, there were no extra charges. HTH, :)

I've recently completed the visa process for my maid... I took her to the Satwa medical centre with all the documents I had.. so the temporary visa, passports plus copies, cancellation from previous employer etc. Basically when we went to Satwa, we first went to the typing centre next door who did the medical application. From there we went to the medical centre where everything else was done. I would suggest just take everything you have just in case! Good luck :)

Hello ladies :) Quick update... I'VE FINALLY GOT A MAID!!!! WOOO HOOOOOOOO!!!! After around 8 months on and off, and lots of that time wasted by people generally being dishonest, I am so pleased to say that I've now found her :) It's still early days (she's not been with us even a month), but so far, so good. Thank you all!

I went to the DNRD in Jebel Ali last week to process my new maid's visa - they had an Ejari desk there, which is where I registered with my original tenancy contract & dewa bill. It cost about aed 200.

We have recently got a pet tortoise - a Russian. Please could you recommend where you got an outdoor pen/run? Our garden is huge, and we're worried about 'losing' her! Also need to keep her safe from the automatic garage door... Also, at the moment, we are feeding it salad leaves which it seems to love, but do I need to give her anyting else? She is happy & healthy :) We did buy an indoor tortoise home, but the weather is so lovely, she has been outside, and loves it. And one final question - do I need to get her a friend? Or is she happy to be on her own? TIA!

Go to Glitz in Al Barsha, ask for Nasreen. I always get my henna done there, lovely dark colour & pretty designs. And very reasonable! At Eid, my daughter & I got both our hands done, front and back, and eyebrows/upper lip threading, and my daighter had her fringe trimmed - came to dhs 230 only! 04 325 6054 edited by Sprinkles 17 on 31/10/2012

Thanks ladies, it's comforting to know we're not alone! We've tried allowing DD to sleep in our bed & lifting her back to her own bed once she's asleep... it doesn't work for us :( she wakes up almost straight away... Last night my hubby suggested opening out the sofa bed in our room & letting DD sleep on there when she comes in... at least we'll have our bed to ourselves! We'll see, may try that...

My youngest of 4 has never been great at staying in her own bed, but this is the worst she has ever been. We stayed in the UK for 2 months over the summer, and were co-sleeping as we were staying with relatives. Since being back, her night habits have deteriorated and I'm struggling :( She goes to bed at 7pm and takes a dummy with her. She happily goes to sleep in her own bed, but almost as soon as she's fallen asleep, she keeps getting up, again and again and again, crying & getting out of bed. I have to return her to her bed and say "night night". She'll fall asleep, but again, sometimes as soon as 10 minutes later she's up again. Just as an example, this evening, she has been up 4 times within an hour of going to bed. I have to be up with my other 3 children in the morning to get them organised & drop them off at school, and I usually give in & eventually allow my youngest to come into our bed. She then sleeps fine. But I don't. She literally sleeps on my head so I can barely move. Any advice?? How can I get her to stay in her own bed?? If I try control crying etc, I'll disturb my other children who have to get up early for school... I'm just soooo tired now. And fed up... having DD in our bed every night is also taking it's toll on my relationship with my husband :(

Ladies, would you please mind sharing how much this agency charged and what that covered? Also, how much do you pay your maids or do they recieve their salary direct from the agency? I am having no luck with finding a maid :( so perhaps using an agency is a better idea! TIA x

@ishehere I know what you're saying, and yes, I agree, children should not be allowed to be noisy & disruptive in a public place - but that's the problem, she was not! I am a mum of 4, and I wouldn't tolerate my children misbehaving in public. Of course there have been times when they are noisy & disruptive, and if this was the case this afternoon, then yes, this couple had every right to complain. But my 2 year old was being very good! Lol I think I would have noticed if she was not...

exactly... these people need to speak to the parents of those children who ARE noisy, naughty, disruptive, climbing furniture, throwing food, shouting at maids etc etc! Mind you, that's if those parents would look away from the screen of their phone or stop their own conversation long enough to listen...

hello ladies, I've followed the Gina Ford Potty Training in One Week book for all 4 of my children. With the first 3, had no issues :) They were all clean & dry just after their second birthdays. With my youngest, who is now 25/26 months old, she's been having nappy off time for a few hours every day for several months, and was happy to sit/use the potty/toilet too. I have 'officially' started training her since Friday, and she's been doing very well. Only I have encountered a problem. Suddenly, she is reluctant to use the big toilet, only wants to use the potty. Not a big deal, but yesterday I went out with her for the first time with no nappy. She obviously needed a wee, so we tried the public toilets, which she briefly sat on, but unsuccesfully. I also then tried to get her to use the Tomme Tippee Potette (travel potty) which I had used with my elder children. Again, no success. So unfortunately she did have an accident before we got home :( Today, I have hidden the potty at home, so she has no choice but to use the big toilet. Is this OK? Has anyone else experienced similar problems? Thanks!! :)

She says she does have a copy of her contract in her room, but does not know/understand what it says. She is sponsored by this company, so yes, i would think that the labour laws do apply... Am calling MOL for advice...

Hi all, hoping for some advice. I have a lovely Philipina cleaner who comes to us twice a week from an agency. She has worked for this agency for 2 years, and now want to return to the Philipines to see her 3 young children. She was initially told by the company that this would be OK, although they did want her to stay on longer. She is apparently owed aed 3000 by the company, as well as a flight home. However, when she approached the subject with her boss, he told her that if she was to leave now, he would pay her nothing other than her salary. No bonuses etc.The company has never paid for medical cards etc, id cards etc etc. This has always come out of the girl's pocket herself. Without this money owed to her, she cannot afford the ticket home, let alone take any money back for her children. She arrived at my home in a state this morning, and I want to be able to at least offer her some advice. She does not know what her contract states, and I get the feeling the manager of this company is treating her extremely unfairly & taking advantage of the situation. I have always thought the company takes advantage of her. She works VERY hard, sometimes she has 4 duties back to back, so her working day starts at 6am and finishes at 11pm! Over the 8-9 months we have known her, she has lost weight and looks increasingly exhausted. Financially, we are in a position to help her, but I was wondering if there was anything else we could do? Looking forward to your replies....
