I just want to say thank you to everyone for your advice and kind offers of help. We have, hopefully, got a solution to the problem by way of one such kind offer and made new friends in the process.

DH calling here. DW is heading back to UK soon, and thought I could be more direct. Not sure if it'll work, but here it is: Been looking at your expatwoman thread re. the dog, and am coming around to the idea that re-homing might be the best way. To quote, with comments: I hate to say it, but I think you have to put your personal feelings aside and think about what is really best for your dog. Gormless remark. How can we put 'personal feelings' aside? He's the dog who has been with us for most of our son's life, has a better sense of humour than most humans I meet, and is an integral part of the family. You say your DH can be away from a few days to up to a MONTH?! That really is not fair on the dog, especially in his aging years, they need more company and TLC time than ever. True. Pet sitting for those lengths of time isn't ideal as the poor pooch will be on his own, kennels - he'll feel like you've abandoned him. Well, it's not as if he isn't a well-travelled dog, who's used to kennels, but I see the point. I really do think you need to consider taking him with you, if you're going to the UK and you have all his paperwork in order there is no quarantine if he's in the pet passport scheme. He can't go back to the UK because he won't have anywhere to live, Landlords with 'No Pets' stipulations are the norm, and besides, how is he going to survive an English winter having acclimatised here? If not then a foster home or new home. Well, maybe. It's looking like the most logical option, except he's my dog. Please really think about what is best for the dog. And has the person who posted that paragraph had a litttle fat puppy and watched him grow over time into a senior citizen of the dog world? If so I will bow down to superior knowledge of what's best for my dog. If not, then the best for the dog is my concern. All I'm asking for is a little help, which I can reciprocate when I'm here. Big garden, dogs can go wild, cats less so and snakes are banned. Quid pro quo.

Hi Goldeelocks No, nothing suspicous or underhand about this. I'm returning to UK for family reasons. DH is staying here as he works here but travels a lot at short notice. Nothing else to it. And yes, we have had our lovely dog for all of his 14 years. No chance whatsoever of having him put down.

Thanks ladies for your replies so far, which I very much appreciate. We are in a very difficult position at the moment. Our lovely boy is almost 14 years old and we simply do not know the best answer. With regard to re-homing, we're a loggerheads. We both love him very much. However, I think re-homing, or fostering on temporary basis, might be the best solution, but DH doesn't want to do that! What to do? There is no possibility at all that I can take him away with me as I'm moving into rented accommodation where pets aren't allowed.

Ha ha. You try having to put up with constant barking day after day after day after day, whenever you or anyone/thing passes their house or you even go out your front door. I like dogs and I do have a sense of humour, but there's a limit to what one can tolerate. It's the owners who are at fault, not me for commenting about noisy nuisance dogs. I've put up with it for long enough and have finally expressed my feelings. I don't know what can be done, but I am sick of having to put up with it.

It's ridiculous. This is a residential area. Why can't people control their dogs and keep them indoors when they start to cause a nuisance. There are new people moving into this area all the time - what are they going to think when they've just signed up for a year's rental and on the first day they realised that instead of a nice villa, they've actually moved into kennels?! For anyone thinking of moving to JVT I would advise you not to be fooled by the nice villas with large gardens because you are going to need a lot of patience and a good set of earplugs.

Thanks Sanddy Dogg. They're cheaper than DKC as well! Went to look at a villa up there the other day - can't wait for November to come round so that we can move!

Does anyone know how to go about selling your car when you're not here? As in, I am leaving Dubai and I need to get someone to sell it on my behalf. I don't know what the procedure is and what paperwork is required. Advice gratefully received.

Bumbles The area is definitely growing in terms of people moving in, but is still a building site! Having said that, it's close to Springs so you can easily do shopping there. Also it only takes a few minutes to get to SZ Road, Al Khail and Emirates Road, so access is not a problem. We had a lot of problems with a/c and water last summer, which were an issue at the time and hoping we won't be facing the same this summer. Villas are very nice and gardens a huge attraction. It's nice to have a home with new and modern fixtures and fittings. If its a brand new villa you'll have to fork out for any landscaping works yourselves, although you don't necessarily have to spend a fortune on that. We used to live in Springs and do miss having a swimming pool on hand, but as I say, it's an area still under construction. Unfortunately, big gardens means lots of dogs. There do seem to be a lot of people who allow their dogs to bark to a very annoying level and do not seem to have any control over them or consideration for their neighbours, so I would advise you to check very carefully the neighbourhood you are considering moving to if you think this would bother you. Other than that, it's a good place. Generally speaking it only takes around 30 minutes to get to the airport.

I have a lot of second hand novels cluttering the house and need to find somewhere to donate them to. There don't appear to be any second hand book shops in Dubai. I've also asked at the library, but they aren't overly willing to accept second hand books due to lack of space. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks.

Hi Jax1 Yup, 11pm seems about right. My boy generally goes around that time and never has any trouble getting up early next morning. Sometimes he'll go before then, whenever he's ready. We've never had to make a big deal out of it, so my advice would be to go with it as long as he's not falling asleep in school!

Excellent news. I've heard of Salon Ink. Thanks very much for your help. This should hopefully mean that I don't have to hide in dark corners when I go out socialising!

Thanks Sarahloudxb. Sounds like the clips could be the answer as my hair is also fine (and WAS medium length!) and there's no way I'm gonna pay that much for extensions. Where do you buy the Godess clips?

Thanks ladies. I quickly found someone privately through a friend of a friend. Have to go to UK for a funeral and couldn't have gone because of the dog if it weren't for the kindness of people willing to help. Appreciate your replies.

Hi DubaiCat Glad to hear the dogs are now on the mend, but the problems might not have been caused by the plants, but the water. Are you giving them tap water? We had the same problem with our dog when we first moved to a brand new villa. Gave him tap water without giving it a thought as we've always drunk tap water ourselves (yes, even here in Dubai) and so naturally also always gave the dog tap water. Couldn't think what on earth was making him ill until it finally occured to us that it might be the odd-tasting water so we started giving him bottled water (we'd already found it unbearable to drink ourselves so had moved to bottled) - problem solved - no more dog s**t on the carpet and all well in dog world again. So maybe the plants weren't to blame, but the water.

You could try Homes R Us at Ibn Battuta - they've got a good selection of styles and of course a huge sale on at the mo.

Thanks everyone. Most helpful. I think I'll try the one next to Park n Shop first. Stardust - 'fraid not. It means Subaru fan as in Subaru Imprezza (arguably the best affordable fast car on the roads in the UK). Thanks again EW, nearly always the best place to go for help and advice.

Thanks everyone for your quick responses and great ideas. We've done the whole photo thing before for another big occasion and it worked well. ABF I like the tulips idea - would never have thought of that. Also like Kitty Bitty's 2 cake idea. Much appreciated.
