Dont know about KA but I always use Everest Furniture to make my drapes, nice people, good quality- turnaround time 3-7 days . We also used them to make our living room furniture. Dont know about cost comparison but just ordered a set of drapes for our master bedroom- to cover a massive floor to ceiling window lined with blackout fabric and that was about 1800 dhs I think. You can google them - they are near the Oasis centre.

Really? I have found the co-op behind the Shangri - La hotel the best of the bunch. The guys behind the meat counter actually are helpful (as compared to the Safa park one where they will do their best to ignore you and then when you persist, will give you the ultimate glare of discontent) and the meat is quite good- they often have filet as well and a wide selection and will cut anything you like - rack of lamb etc If you didnt like the Shangri La one, you def. wont like the Safa one- dont waste your time going there.

Sorry about the news. Has it been confirmed for sure with a biopsy? I think Dr Rizk in Abu Dhabi (Gulf International Cancer Clinic) is really very good and my friend who is super picky about Doctors went there as others Iknow and the treatment was top notch- Maybe you will not have to go overseas necessarily.

I think there is a support group for people that have lost their mom at a young age or traumatically at Lifeworks. Maybe contact them to see if I am correct and perhaps the person who runs it would have some advice, even if the kids are too young for the group ( I dont know the details of the group).

It is not banned in the UAE. I believe she can travel with a personal supply as long as it is in the origina pill bottle and she has a copy of the prescription or letter from her doctor. She could problably see a doctor here and get a prescription otherwise.

dreamland aquapark in RAk is a bit dated, but cheaper than all the rest and great for the ages you mention- a lot of the advantages of the other parks will not be of use to you your kids are too young. The entertainer used to have 2 for 1 tickets too- so check. The exit is actually before Al Hamra exit - so it is slightly closer than iceland I think. We were disappointed in Iceland park for the cost of entry . And the massive wet soccer pitch makes everyones feet sore. <em>edited by Sue on 12/02/2013</em>

Dr Mark Janoski (sp?) at Dubai Physio and Family Medicine Clinic is great- takes his time and is a gp and a paediatrician - my kids really like him and I like the fact he works late afternoons when the kids get out of school- even called to see how I was. He is in the mall right beside Mercato mall so 5 minute drive from Downtown dubai- and sumo sushi after the visit is an added bonus lol! <em>edited by Sue on 12/02/2013</em>

MrsB I knew Argo was 15 back home so I know it is fine for her to see- if sneaking into a movie is the worse thing my teen does in her life, I will be a happy mom! It is a rite of passage- for me it was Rocky Horror picture show. Thanks all, I will give it a shot- the movie is supposed to be great and disappears from Dubai shortly.

Thanks for the reply Sakhifa. Lloyds used to charge 70 dhs for a transfer- I dont know yet what NBD charges- but 30 dhs difference for the convenience of a 4 times a year lump sum transfer is an amount I am willing to fork out for the convenience (and safety of not hauling around a bunch of cash in my car). However I am still confused about the US dollar exchange rate- is it true that no matter where I go in Dubai, the USD exchange to UAE dirham is fixed and therefore it really doesn't matter who I use (bank or exchange houses)- in terms of getting a different exchange rate ?( putting the issue of the transfer fee aside)... would be grateful if any financial types could advise thanks.

Just reviving this thread as I have a question or two...Trying to set up electronic transfer with NBD to my USD offshore account with LLoyds Isle of Man but of course the NBD online system "is having difficulty with iphones and blackberries and Mac's when sending the authentication code".. so I cannot do it currently. Debating going elsewhere but 1. When you say "shop around" - when it comes to the USD- is the Dirham not fixed to the USD- in other words, everyone is going to give me a rate of 3.68 so why shop around? ( I get the concept for Uk funds etc etc) . 2. Do you really walk around Dubai with a purse stuffed with cash on the way to a transfer place- is that safe? Sorry if stupid questions. Would be a lot easier just to use NBD online - since it is a large sum of money the difference in the fixed transfer fee they charge vs the others probably isn't worth the hassle of carting around a bunch of money. Just might take them a year to sort out their issues........

" Thought it was really good until the last section of the book; where it just descended into nonsense." - I totally agree-loved the book but should have stopped at the 3/4 way mark- what was the editor thinking? Definitely a great book though. Loved "Cutting for stone" by Abraham Varghese.

We held our son back as he was the youngest and it made a huge difference. Best thing we ever did. Previous poster was correct in that eldest kids in classes overall thrive the best. Rather do it now when he is too young to be aware than years from now when he is still struggling. Christa Strauss is good for assessment as is Jessica Lee at Infinity- but assessments are costly, over-recommended in Dubai and not as reliable at such a young age. I would hold him back and then get him assessed next year if that doesnt help. Follow your instinct and do what you think is right. Best of luck

I grow lots of basil outdoors. right now is too hot though. Starting in October, I plant those plants from the grocery store directly into the soil - in an area of my yard that gets sun in the afternoon(after 1- 2 only). they thrive like crazy , and I pinch off the flowering heads regularly and one plant will provide basil for at least 3-4 months.I will add plants if necessary, but by the end of May (getting too hot) they are all getting leggy, dried out and tough, regardless of pinching back. If , during the year, the stem becomes "woody"- I even cut back the woody stem half way down ("hard " pruning) and it grows back! Basil loves sun however the sun can be so hot here it can fry your herbs. On your balcony it will be extra hot if you are sun exposed- make sure to plant it in a very deep pot that is not orange clay that dries out too quickly, also in an area of the balcony that gets some degree of shade at some point in the day. Make sure it only gets 1/2 day of sun. It likes dark, organic rich soil- I use potting soil bought at the store- not "sweet soil"- which is basically nice sand. coriander also grows well, just need to pinch back regularly to prevent it from going to seed. Lemon grass also grows like a weed. Rosemary, although a perennial, will not last all year round as the summer sun kills it. I have grown it successfully as an annual, it does not need as much moistness of soil as basil, it prefers to grow in soil that has rocks and sand in it. As well it grows well for me in an area that only gets sun after 1-2 pm. I grow it starting end of October. Good luck!! <em>edited by Sue on 24/08/2012</em>

London is a very nice University town. There are a number of very good hospitals and all of them are University linked "teaching" hospitals so there is no shortage of doctors. In Canada traditionally family doctors - are fully qualified to deliver and do most of the deliveries (although I think that might be changing), Obstetricians used to be only for hi risk pregnancies but not sure what it is like now. Also Midwives can be good if they have a lot of experience. So not to worry, you will be in good hands. Normally you need to be referred to an Ob-gyn and finding a family doctor in Canada (you should have one) is a bit of a nightmare as there is a shortage. However you are lucky as it is a teaching centre and there are tons of amazing doctors there .You could try contacting the Byron family medicine clinic and they could give you some advice and probably accept patients as they are a teaching centre All the health care hospitals come under London Health Sciences Centre - here is the link and you might contact them to ask - if you look at this page link it lists the 4 main hospitals and the 2 main family medicine teaching clinics so you should be able to get answers from one of them (note there are also family doctors and obstetricians in non-teaching private practice- they might not be accepting patients though-someone at one of these links should be able to advise you and also advise you on what private patients do) http://www.lhsc.on.ca/Patients_Families_Visitors/LHSC/Getting_Here/index.htm Note that Private pay patients are a rarity in Canada so might take a few people to get answers you need. also, there is a forum for expats for canada- maybe post some questions there- http://www.expatforum.com/expats/canada-expat-forum-expats-living-canada/73077-what-london-ontario-like-live.html London is a great town. a lot of university students so just make sure you dont rent in a building or house that has a lot of students or you wont get sleep. a lot of houses close to the campus (around the perimeter) are rented to students. You will be 45 minutes drive from lake huron, with beautiful sandy beaches. Make sure you make it to a little town called Bayfield some time - they have a nice playhouse theatre (not for kids- proper plays) and cute little shops/restaurants and stunning sunsets. Grand bend is closer but more of a party town on the beach. Stratford is another nice day drive and is home of the stratford theatres- another great day trip. With little kids, Storybrook park is a beautiful park along the Thames river (everything in London and surrounding area is named after the UK) that kids love. Autumn there is beautiful. Winter gets alot of snow but not as cold as other regions. Farmers markets are awesome. I am jealous. Have fun!

Don't know how big your kids are but A trip to Robben Island to see where Nelson Mandela was in jail is a must. The tours are still given by ex - inmates so really interesting - eventually all these guys will die off and the trip will not be quite the same. Also if you are only going to Cape Town and not doing a game reserve , then there are game reserves not that far from there now and they are malaria free. Not as huge and remote as the rest of SA but still good if you are not doing a safari. Google Aquila game reserve- they have 3 hours game drives, or horseback safaris or quad biking etc. If your kids are little, definitely do the Penguins at boulders beach. I agree a trip up the East coast to Hermanus for best fish and chips in the world and hopefully whales (if in season) is great on a sunny day. Here is a helpful link...http://www.capetownmagazine.com/best-of-Cape-Town/50-super-cool-things-to-do-for-kids/124_22_10671 note on that list the scratch patch is a place full of gemstones and you pick out your own . popular with our kids up to about their 10th birthdays. Ratanga junction is a full day water/theme park and very good. And of course if the weather is good- the beach. A day trip to cape point nature re serve - which on google maps now appears to be called Table mountain National park (?) is down on the peninsula and excellent. Head out early and make a full day of it. Lots of easy hiking with wild ostriches , baboons and some wild buck. Not safe for swimming but pretty and lots of running around to be done by kids. The pizza at the restaurant there is amazing! When you drive back to Cape Town take the western side of the peninsula and it will take you past Kommetjie which is a great, quiet little town with stunning empty beaches - in fact it runs into Nordhoek beach, where you can do horseriding on the beach. I love Kommetjie as there are no crowds and white sugar sand. I am not sure how safe to swim, I am sure some SA folk on this board can advise. Have fun- lucky girl! Also I agree with the others, watch your timing- December is SA school holidays so very busy and more expensive; right now is winter and you will find it very cold through to September.

Yes I had it. Was a real pain in the a**. It means you have been hacked. Contact hotmail customer support separately and then they will ask you a bunch of stuff- I found this quite difficult as they want some dates and subject matter of various previous emails etc. and my memory is not that great, but fortunately I had printed off some old e-mails. Eventually my account was re-instated but took about 10 days. Good luck!

So if you want to access your accounts online and your offshore accounts on line you have to input this pin from the fob? Or is it just if you are going to do a wire transfer? Sounds hectic. We are going to keep our LLoyds offshore accounts- does anyone know if you can do online banking with Emirates NBD?(and set up standing orders for transferring of salary to LLoyds offshore from there?). H**C is sounding worse by the minute.

Ha ha Sandy Dogg- no, H**C is not a swear word (although some would beg to differ... )- just gotta be careful of the slander thing . Thanks for all of your replies. It is only the Dubai Lloyds branches that are being sold (they will keep a Lloyds offshore branch somewhere in Dubai- to be determined). Mostly I am concerned about safety- money not disappearing from our account, also ability to online bank safely (and transfer money offshore online) and also Lloyds was good at calling when our Visa card was being used for big purchases etc to make sure it hadnt been stolen. Anyone else vote for Emirates NBD? Anyone had money disappear out of their account with Emirates NBD ? (a problem with H**C for a number of people I know over the last 3 years). It would be a lot easier just to stay with H**C as LLoyds will take care of the transition, but it just seems to have such a bad rep.

apart from allergies, what is wrong with children having a slice of cake for someone's birthday? Seriously they are children.... let them enjoy it. I agree, but the point of the whole debate was that it is not just the odd piece of cake, with 24 kids in the class, after school bake sales, kids giving friends junk that they bring from home, treats at neighbour's houses, birthday parties on the weekends etc etc it all adds up to junk/candy/cake at least 3-4 times per week. Then it is no longer a treat and just simply too much sugar/fat (in some mother's opinions). And then when I would like to actually give my kid at treat it just doesn't happen because he/she has had too much **** all week. We didn't grow up with all this sugar and "treats" in school. Yes there might have been treats at home or we might have had some in our lunchboxes, but that was up to our parents to decide. I remember a party bag or 2 from a party when I was a kid and I remember maybe 2 or 3 items, now it is shopping bag size treat bags. A coke was 240 mls when we were kids, now 500 ml is the norm. I have had teachers in school here give out candy as rewards , even one year for the field day each time they completed an athletic event (!!!) . what ever happened to praise?? Look at the trend of childhood type 2 diabetes, a diagnosis unheard of when most of us were kids . A treat is supposed to be a treat, and I for one would like to decide when my child gets them. It is not just the odd bit of cake these days !

I am for the ban. Between 24 kids in the class, birthday parties on the weekends, Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's days, After school bake sales/fundraisers,neighbour's houses, kids at school buying junk at the cafeteria and sharing etc etc, my kids get offered junk at least three - four times a week from people other than us. Kids are getting fatter, less active, and Diabetes is escalating.I think it is fine for my kids to have a treat once or twice a week as a TREAT and we the treat is to be decided by us. I do not want someone else deciding to fill my kids up on junk in school and then yes they come home with an uneaten lunch that has to be tossed. Sometimes they come home from parties with party bags that have enough candy in them for 3 months. If you cannot afford a party for 24 kids then just have 3 of the best friends over for some cake and a movie. Simple. Regarding allergies, I think some posters think the nut allergy thing is a fad or a joke. I find the nut bans a royal pain in the a** but I try to put myself in those parents shoes- Nut anaphylaxis can be instant, and a child can be dead within 2-3 minutes. I have seen a reaction and hope to G*d I never see one again. Yes when kids get older they need to be aware and learn to avoid other people's food, but the little ones will not be able to do this. What are you teaching your kids when you say " I don't see why 23 kids have to be inconvienienced for the sake of 1 kid (Who might DIE- terrible inconienience I guess)- you are teaching them they must get immediate gratification of their wants and needs without Empathy or consideration for others. Nice.

well, service is pretty good by Dubai standards... felt sorry for the Canadian girl trying to get the staff to serve to Canadian standards.. she looked pretty stressed... Sandwiches.. they got the order wrong and they were awful (chicken paninis). But, the donuts.... What a novelty to have a timbit that tastes like when I was a kid!! I guess she is Lady Luck - because her husband makes enough money she is LUCKY enough to have a CHOICE about staying home. She probably is LUCKY enough to have some excellent female school teachers for her child. She probably is LUCKY enough to have the choice of going to a female doctor for her smear tests. She is LUCKY enough to get her pedicures done by a female Philipino who probably isn't so lucky, and has to work every day to feed her children while someone else raises her children 1000's of miles away. If she has a sore back, she is LUCKY enough to choose a female massage therapist to rub down her back instead of some hairy man. She is LUCKY enough to get the dreaded bikini wax by a female. Imagine now that is a man.... Does she really expect that all of these women should not have children? In Lady luck's world , all of our female teachers under the age of 40-50 disappear, as do all our female teachers, doctors, massage therapists, pedicurists, and beauty technicians etc etc etc. How much you want to bet the Lady Luck has used the services of any of these females (who have children) in the last 6 months? Hypocritical to say the least.
