look at the drivers - what do you expect? I don't understand what you mean by this. How can you tell by looking at someone if they are a good driver or not?

The best drivers I have seen are from DESC where they have their own buses. Not necessarily, I have in the past reported 3 incidents where the bus has come to a complete stop in fast moving traffic on a major highway in order to get to the front of queuing traffic.

would you not just rent in Business Bay? There are so many towers to choose from now, you could then walk to work and then there is public transport on your doorstep as well as being able to walk to Dubai Mall in the cooler months.

The parade along the Boulevard (29th Nov) is really fun, floats and people standing on the side of the road, all of the fire brigade, police depts, ambulances etc all bring out their best vehicles, it's really fun. There are cars covered in 1 AED coins and music etc. It goes from one end of the boulevard to the end and then back again. There will be fireworks (probably on 2nd) There is a motor parade on the 28th which will have all the motorbikes (noisy harleys etc) and supercars in it, the roads will be blocked off on those days as it goes round the City but it's a rolling blockade so traffic is only stuck for 10-15 minutes in each place, again, very fun to stand on the side of the road with your UAE flags as they go by. On Beach Road on the 2nd Dec it is generally pretty hectic with people displaying their car decorations and generally whooping and spraying fizzy spray stuff  - that goes on late into the night! There is also usually a parade in Mamzar Park with police horses etc but I think you would have to read arabic newspapers to find out when it is on, it is usually attended by the Royal family and all the crowds are face painted with UAE paint and with their UAE gear on. A very fun time of year. Enjoy!

Things I think have improved over the years -General amenities - healthcare; malls; brands; restaurants -Infrastructure - roads/metro -Parks & green spaces -Ease of getting things done, procedures are simpler and more streamlined -Introduction of schemes like SMCCU, bridging gaps in knowledge and trying to bring communities together -Locals with more passion about the UAE and especially around this time of year, it just gets bigger every year. I also love that we as expats are encouraged to join in celebrations like National Day. -People tend to stay longer than a 1 or 2 year contract. So it's a bit less transient than the old days. -We can now own homes here which makes long term expats feel more at home here. -Redevelopment of older areas to bring focus to the cultural side of Dubai (like Bastakiya and the Old School etc) -Driving, I'm surprised to see this is on people's bad list, it's SOO much better and more civilised than it used to be. -The music scene/bands who come here now - it's really fantastic - Organic & Local farming which has sprung up in the UAE, love it and we should all support it by buying local produce! -I love that so many things are free or low cost so that people across all walks of life can be involved in the same thing. I'm talking about parks/beaches/firework displays etc. So it doesn't have to be all glitz and glam. On the other hand I think: - it's sad that it's harder now to get to know Local families as more and more expats move in and establish their own communities. - it's harder to find genuinely older or more authentic parts of Dubai. Even places like Ravis/BuQutair - become so commercialised that they are not part of the 'old' Dubai anymore. It's almost tempting to keep old finds to yourself so they don't become Expatted! - The destruction of old parts to make way for new parts is necessary but also sad. The old arabic doors on the gates of someone's one storey house, the very tall trees, the little alleyways - parts of a Dubai which are slowly being eradicated. - it's harder to find people that have moved here for the adventure of moving to the Middle East for the cultural experience. There is almost a new wave of people who have moved here for the new 'style' of Dubai living - the boat/mall/brunch/lifestyle people, and while there's nothing wrong with that I sometimes wonder if they've ever spoken to a Local person or got to know anything about the country we are living in. oops. that turned out longer than I thought.

Have you tried just looking on YouTube? There are sooo many chefs who give excellent tutorials online, and then you can choose which type of cuisine eg North indian, South Indian etc. It also means you can press pause when you haven't chopped up yet what they are putting in the pan. ;) I have tried a few Indian recipes with this guy and they have turned out quite well! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLUh3FXf1eo&list=PLDBC28CE95E21BBB1 ETA just watched this and how much chili powder did he put in and how much salt in the water???!!! :\: edited by Tattie Bogle on 18/11/2014

There are so many places which very nearly got it right but then didn't! I'm talking about the places (no names mentioned!) which offer great food, good location, concept, parking etc. But then have childrens' parties at the same time on top of loud music and people shouting in a microphone! Or don't offer Mums a quiet place to sit with their young babies while their older children are playing, or to sit and work quietly. Mums don't[i'> like[/i'> noise. Children don't [i'>need[/i'> noise. So why have it?! The earlier idea of the pampering at the play area is a brilliant one, a few of us mums spoke to Lamcy play area about this years ago but it never took off. A lot of mums who don't have maids don't have a lot of options to get to the salon. Just having one area, maybe a glass room so mum can still keep an eye on LO while having her nails and hair done is BRILLIANT thinking.

RJ I wouldn't worry about that too much - your company are aware that DH is changing job, it is a very short period of time while he is cancelling his and changing on to a new one, you have a valid labour card and can prove to the authorities that everything else is in order/being applied for. Don't worry too much about it.

- no music or other irritating noises in the mum's area - no loud music in the play area, there is enough noise from children just being children, they don't need blasting music! - Pods for working mums so plug points for laptops/phones etc - webcam access for mums that are dropping children and going away for a couple of hours so they can check up (obv password only given to the mums dropping off their child that day/daily changing passwords). - Lamcy used to have an amazing play area, it had a pretend shop with trollies and tills, library, water area, sand pit, dressing up area etc - just some different things apart from the usual soft play. -

the Front gate is still open, and the gate on Al Hadiqa street too. the opposite gates, so the one on SZR, and the opposite one to Al Hadiqa (I think those are 4&5) are both shut. I think you can still get in as normal in the other two gates, but parking will be a problem depending on what time you go.

I do not have a scooby (doo) what a scoby is or a kumbacha. I think we should play a game without googling. Some Thursday night fun [strike'>to entertain us while there is nothing better to do until the takeaway arrives.[/strike'> I think: Kumbacha is an exercise A scoby is some sort of stick like a pole.

if she is on her Dh's sponsorship, her visa has to be cancelled prior to his current visa being cancelled (or, he can pay a deposit and put it on hold). If he cancels her visa, she can travel out. If he puts in on hold, she can not travel out. once he has his new visa, she can have hers within 24-48 hours.

your visa can be put on hold BUT you can not travel while it is on hold. your visa can be done very quickly and easily (24-48 hours) if you have everything in order and do the VIP medical part. However, with 3 days public holidays for National Day and you travelling on 19 Dec, the sooner DH gets on with his visa and has it all finished the better otherwise you are going to run out of time. You may find it quicker/easier to do your visa yourself once you have DH's in hand.

The owner would have to still do drawings/submit them to the developer for approval. If the developer doesn't like the plans/doesn't think they fit with the community, yes they can be told to remove everything and put it back to the way it was.

I hate it. BUT it would be better if you could go to the end of the thread, once you are entering it for the 2nd time instead of going to page one, then page 4, then all the way down page 4 to the end of the thread. As Lolacat says on another thread, the way it is now is enough to put you off the whole site completely.

No that was the best bit. Then you could see if there were any [strike'>bunfights[/strike'> interesting replies, before seeing what the OP was.

- part time jobs are available - you can also negotiate at the outset on a full time job. Say you'll work til 3pm and then the rest of the day at home etc. It is possible. - Not all nurseries are expensive, the big branded ones are, yes, but there are mid ranged and lower budget ones too. Some not quite as sparkly as the others but if you are on a budget it is worth having a look at all. - At the outset pick a nursery which does not close over the summer. There are nurseries who are literally open all year apart from Eid holidays (2-3 days). That way you can manage without a maid/nanny. Many nurseries have 'terms' and then the terms go into summer camps etc with exactly the same timings. - Dubai is great for families and there are loads of nice places to live - Springs would be perfect for a 2-3 bedroom villa with parks/pools and an easy commute to Media City.

Read the terms of your contract regarding your security deposit. Normally the security deposit is retained by the LL to cover the eventuality of any minor damage or if you leave the property unpainted - to cover their costs of getting it ready for a new tenant. So if she is keeping it anyway, then the cost of repainting is already covered under this and you are not obliged to do it.

Most people moving here go through the following phases: First few weeks: excitement/everything is new and fun After a month or two: reality. Everything seems difficult. Visa process is hard to get head round. It's hard to get anything done. After 3 of 4 months; Why did I/we come here, just realised it's not a long holiday, this is permanent! really homesick. Missing good friends from home. After 6 months: First trip back home, can't wait to get home and see everyone. During trip home: hmm - it's not as great as I remember it. Maybe Dubai's not that bad. Coming back to Dubai: YAAAAAAY I'm home. edited by Tattie Bogle on 08/11/2014

Hi, the corniche is a 14km stretch so it's not somewhere you'll find on google maps. If you search for "Kite Beach" you'll find the area which Notepad mentions below.
