MaryTodd, the Hajar range of mountains is volcanic, vast, beautiful - and certainly not a pile of sand! I think you have maybe not discovered them?!! Ruth, trust you took my post in the way it was intended, I.e. Pointing you in the direction of some substitutes for the things you are missing to try and make your life a little happier as you will be here for a good few years yet! :)

Hi Ruth That's quite a list :-P - not sure how new you are to here and Dubai will never match your list but I've put some places in that maybe you've not been to that might help. [i'>I like green places, forests, trees, mountains would be even better[/i'> Mushrif Park has great trees and is very natural. Safa Park has lovely trees. So does Jumeirah Beach Park. A drive up the back of Nad Al Sheba too is lovely for trees! Hatta for mountains/day trips to Fujeirah. [i'> I like rural areas, mud, country lanes[/i'> It will never be rural or muddy, but have you explored all of the older areas of Dubai? Sometimes when you are feeling that it's all too glam and polished it's nice to go and just walk there - you can spend hours just pottering around there and sitting watching the world go by. The creek with all its hustle and bustle can be very calming :) [i'>When I go shopping I like streets of boutique shops[/i'> There are lots of boutique shops in Jumeirah, especially along Beach Road and around McGrudys . [i'>I like to buy food from farm shops[/i'> Have you been to the Ripe farm shop? Local produce is on the up. Maybe this is something you could even be involved in - have you been reading about how Abu Dhabi has just successfully grown quinoa? This would be an exciting thing to work in as you have an interest in it. [i'> I dislike glamour wealth, flashy things, posing and all the things that seem to go with city living[/i'> Me too but I don't notice it as I don't go to the sorts of places they do :-P [i'>I also miss skiing immensely[/i'> Places like Lebanon/Kazakhstan are a short flight away and perfect for a weekend! I hope you feel more settled soon. Good luck to everyone leaving on new adventures! :) :( :)

Is it for desert driving or just the safer feeling that you want the 4x4 for? The Xterra is fab for off roading as it has a good power/weight/speed ratio but I don't feel as safe in it on SZR as other 4x4s as it feels very light and I def notice the wind blowing it compared to other 4x4s. There are some 4x4s which would be great for both aspects (LandCruiser/Nissan Patrol), some better at the offroading (Xterra) and some better for safety aspect than serious dune bashing.

Dubai does it for some people, but not for others. Even with good friends, Couldn't agree more. Although we have made it our 'home', it will never be our 'home'. If that makes any sense. I get that, I totally get it. But to be here with another 5 years in front of you - you would have to make some adjustments to bits of your life so it doesn't feel like a prison sentence that you are counting down! It will always be just a place to 'be' for most people but at least while they are here they should find things/people/stuff that makes life easier and happier.

Never! :D This is, was, and always will be, home. :) In negotiation with DH. Wanted to leave since before we arrived... He has a latest deadline of 2019 with an option a, b and c early exit plan (based on school/nursery starting dates) inbetween now and then... fighting a losing battle :-( RuthM, I find your post really sad. I don't think you will ever settle or feel happy here until you accept that you are in this for the long haul and you must adjust your way of thinking if you want to feel at home. With such a long stretch ahead of you, maybe it's time to take a different tack towards life here. Have you made some good friends?

I think a lot of posters may think twice about the content of their posts from now on, even though we know the forum is public and can be read by anyone of course, even so when you post on here you have in mind that you are "talking" to other women directly rather than advertising your issues. I know its only a matter of perception really but knowing it all can go out on FB kind of changes the vibe a bit I think. Couldn't agree more! I hate FB! I also find this method a bit underhand. There's always an uproar when a thread is taken by a journalist to a newspaper but I feel this is the same thing.

the commute to al barsha is not bad at all from more affordable areas like: Al Nahda, Al Ghusais, Mirdif, Silicon Oasis, International City etc. There are also plenty of nurseries and schools in these areas.

OP, there are much, much cheaper nurseries in Dubai which would be much more economical for you. You would be best visiting some of them (check the Jaffaliya area of Dubai which has a lot of them, and all surrounding neighbourhoods, Jumeirah 1, Satwa, Karama etc) - you will find much cheaper nurseries which open all day, all year, and which also offer transport at vastly reduced costs to those quoted on this thread. Mostly everything in Dubai can be found on a sliding scale of affordability!

Recycling DOES happen here. There are various different plants in different emirates. i.e the aluminium is in one Emirate, something else in another. Can't remember which one is which but it does happen - I've known a couple of people who worked in the industry. Have faith! :)

SB! Hello! :) No, it's a BB. This from their site: Open the SD card folder on your phone and delete the "WhatsApp" folder. All of your WhatsApp media is now erased. WhatsApp will still open - and your chats will still be there - but your media (photos, videos, audio) will be gone. What's an SD card?

I really have never understood why women feel the need to be so judgmental towards other women. Who cares what other people do? I've been judged in RL (and on here) for working - quite frankly I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks. People do what's right for their own family after having discussed it and made the decision with the important people in their lives, based on their own situations. I don't think anyone needs the pre-approval of anyone outside of that network. Work, Stay at Home, Have a Maid, Don't have a Maid, make your DH frozen meals, leave him to fend for himself, iron his shirts, don't iron his shirts - you really shouldn't have to justify or explain yourself to anyone apart from your own immediate family! Who even has the time to think about other people's lives and judge them for what is a tiny snapshot of their overall situation? Live and let live.
