There must be a mystery entrance! It's one of those Dubai Enigmas. You can see it but you can't get to it.

I think there are also some other reasons EW has changed in the 10+ years it has been running. In those days, there wasn't really anywhere else to ask things. (Does anyone remember the lady that used to have a column in 7 Days where you could ask her to find things and she would write back where to get it.) Nowadays, people are generally not here for only 2 years like they were then. People stay here for longer. There's not such a high turnover of people needing information, and those that do need information would often google it, finding the information on EW or somewhere else. Or they would ask someone they have met, who has been here for longer so knows more than someone who just moved in last week. Most information is already 'out there' and is waiting to be found, rather than unknown. We still have newbies to Dubai, but their requirements in terms of information they need have been met (Look at all the info EW has gathered over the years and made part of their site). Added to that, personalities on the board can change the rhythm and tone of the board, if it is sometimes not a very nice place to be, people will stay away. I believe that is what has happened to EW over the last couple of years and it has generally become quieter.

Hi Trish Ahlan wa Sahlan to Dubai. :) Silicon Oasis would be roughly halfway, though the drive from MotorCity would be alright to Deira as you would always be going against the traffic. His biggest problem will be traffic in Deira - depending on where his office will be? He may end up spending more time navigating through Deira than getting from Motor City. :D Deira is well connected by Metro, so you may want to consider somewhere on the Metro line. He should also find out now if his office has parking.

I never turned mine off, does not anyone else do this? Just bumped up the thermostat to a higher temp during the cooler months. DH would happily live in a fridge so our bedroom one is on all year too. :( I'd be happy all winter with the door open.

Something very odd about this, the company cashed the cheque and handed over the entire sum of cash to the agent? Hmmm. If you go to Bur Dubai police station ask to see the Duty Officer in charge and say you'd like to open a police case. Though they only cover from Sana junction to MOE so if it's not within that area then you'd have to see which police station covers you. Take as much paper/written evidence as you have.

Hi Deeva Contact the Well Woman clinic on 2nd December Street, their Gynaes are great and they have one of the top UAE Breast Surgeons there too (Dr Houriya Khazim) so should you need further analysis then it's the best place to be. Don't worry, you'll be fine!

I also had a quick look at Bur Dubai, which seems to be cheaper than most other central areas. But I got the impression that its quite crazy and loud in the streets, a more "oriental / asian style" living area, and much less western. Is that correct? Bur Dubai is a very fun place to live (I've done it 4 times) - but it is definitely noisier than other parts of Dubai. There are some very nice apartment buildings in Bur Dubai and it is well connected in terms of transport. Close for DIFC too. You will also be spoiled for choice for food deliveries. :D

Also look at Silicon Oasis, which is only a 15-20 minute drive from DIFC and you'll find much more within your budget. Some of the apartments have lovely desert views yet you are very close to lots of amenities.

Hmm - an office building I know which is highly secure takes any ID/Driving License cards, swaps them for an access pass and then returns the ID when the access pass is returned - I guess it is similar. They are definitely allowed to do this in this building.

I'd like to transform the kitchen into a cottage-y type kitchen with nice cupboard doors. How does the price compare between a private company and getting just the doors from Ikea with nice handles :) Also, if you get the doors from Ikea, what do you do about the sides that show as those are built in to the units - how do change them/get them to match? Thanks!

For these kids who get chesty, some of the older Eastern traditions seem to work, I was sceptical at first but have seen first hand! First of all, it's too cold at the moment for them to swim. Secondly, keep their chests warm all the time, in the winter this means vests. no cold water/drinks. When they are actually suffering from coughing fits, have them sleep as upright as possible, this meant for us that I would sleep sitting up with LO sleeping on my chest (this keeps them warm and also keeps them upright). Broths made from bones really help, lots of meat/bone stews. Get well soon x

Gone are the days of scandal and entertainment... It started when the maids moved into their own forum. And nobody seems to have such scandalous maids anymore where the scandals run on for days/weeks with us all on tenterhooks. It's all a bit dull really.

I would say this is not uncommon if the person originates from the East as remembering the day someone dies seems to be quite common. Along with not attending parties/wearing black for a much longer period of time than maybe someone from the West would, after a death.

Creek Park has camels and ponies. They also have the cable car and the family or two seater bikes for hire to ride around the park, it's absolutely beautiful with a great view of the city/creek. Highly recommended :)
