There's such an easy solution to this, I don't know why it is not in place! Service fees should be broken down in to monthly payments and made as part of the DEWA bill. Landlord and tenant agree at the beginning of the contract who is responsible for the payments, if it is the tenant fine - it's on the bill and tenant pays it, if it's the LL then the same amount is deducted from the annual rent payment so monetary wise the tenant is in the same situation but is responsible for making the monthly payment. Tenant pays the monthly dewa bill on time every month &gt;&gt; dewa passes monthly service charge to developer &gt;&gt; service charge is not paid by tenant/dewa cut off (so occupier of property is responsible for making the payment). A lot of Landlords are not even in this country - for the developer it's a huge nightmare to try and get hold of them/make payments. This solves all the problems, no?

Somseret do you mean an abra, to yourself? You can pick them up at the abra stations at each entrance of the textile souq - you can negotiate a price - they'll approach you asking if you want one anyway. Shouldn't be any more than 100 AED (depending on time you need them for and your negotiation as to how much less!) No need to book anything! Enjoy. :)

Div, The Golden Sands area of Bur Dubai is a great area to live in :). So much to do and see, make the most of it while you are there. If you walk from yours down towards the Creek, you'll stumble across the Museum which is a really fun way to spend an afternoon. You've also got the Bastakiya area within walking distance - you'd asked about a cafe, there is one there which is just lovely - outdoors within a little walled courtyard and serves a nice afternoon tea for about 60 AED little sandwiches and cakes. As previously mentioned, definitely explore the creek area - abras across to the other side, wander round the souks (textile on this side, gold/spice on the other). You could fill up a whole day just wandering and stopping to eat! If you run out of steam the ghubaiba station at the creek is one stop from your stop. It is also nice just to wander around the Hindu temple area in Bur Dubai which you can also walk to - lots of little indian cafes serving samosas and chai and the little lane that walks right up to the temple, it is only one person wide and just feels fun! Two metro stops up from the Burjuman station is Jaffaliya where you would get off to get to Zabeel Park, lovely big park. Childrens City in Creek park is a short cab ride from you (huge science centre for kids - can easily spend 4 hours there for 15 AED) - but you might just want to do the park and save the centre for when it is hotter. There is also a planetarium in there which does shows in arabic and english. Donkey and camel rides too! There are also the family peddling bike things, 2 seater bike things and the one seater car things. Creek park is awesome.

Today did seem to be rolling (and very efficiently handled by Dubai Police!) - so that would suggest the next two days will be the same. But not sure!! If nothing else, you will become very familiar with your car's off road capabilities. :D

The road going towards Al Ain was closed, but opened again about 20 minutes ago. From what I could see both directions of MBZ road were open but not sure. I think they must have scooted up Al Ain Road and then the road opened after that. *Tip - do not drink full bottle of water before getting caught in jam* :D

Education is not very high on the list of priorities here it seems. Asti, I think that's a little unfair. Most people know how things can be on the roads here. Those of us with long memories will remember during a rain/flooding session once, people were trapped in their cars for around 3 hours on Al Khail/Emirates Road. What the government is trying to avoid is young children being trapped on school buses in a similar situation. There is a lot of traffic on our roads, closing even one of them leads to a lot of disruption, nobody knows how things are going to be tomorrow. Those of us worried about education can easily set up a day of homework ;)

Scot, Your certificates also should have been stamped by the UAE Embassy in London - otherwise that part will need to be done now. Otherwise you can try taking them to MOFA here, report back on your stamping situation! Typing centres all over the place. If you go to the Al Manara Municipality Building and show what you have to the typing centres there, they will help you. Also immigration is also in that building so everything under one roof. The salary certificate will come from DH's company, depending on if he is in a free zone or not it will be issued by the Free Zone or from Dh's HR dept - it should be in arabic. They will be well used to providing these. It doesn't have to be attested. When you are done with everything you will love your PRO and be eternally sympathetic. :D

It very much depends on your employer and how you negotiate your working arrangements from the start. Some are very flexible and some are not too flexible at all! There are holiday camps at a variety of schools during every holiday - some finish at around 2pm but some do operate for the full day. As school starts very early, you won't need a breakfast club! Most people find it easier to have live in help - without it though it is still very possible to juggle around between holiday clubs and playdates etc and wangling a few favours with your employer!

Hi, It's likely that your man is only charging about 300-400 for doing everything for you - you can do it yourself it's not too bad but you may prefer spending his fee :D. Ok. Firstly, go to the typing centre, they'll help you with everything but you'll need the application form typing for medical, change status and finally the residence visa stamping. You'll need DH's passport, your own, your LO's and ATTESTED marriage certificate, (and birth cert of LO), as well as a salary certificate for DH in arabic. Plenty of photos for all. Also decide if you are going for VIP medical (results within a few hours) or a standard medical where you'll get the results in a few days. All fees are payable in cash. Be prepared if you are doing this by yourself that you'll have a few trips back and forward. Also as DH needs to sign one or two of the forms you won't be able to do one step after another unless he is with you. Shout if you need help. :)

I was once trying to cross the road that runs down from the Garden Centre towards Dubai - it can get pretty busy. Was carrying LO. Police saw me trying to cross, stopped patrol car, got out and held up the traffic to let us cross. LOVE Dubai Police. :)

Lou, it's not uncommon to be pulled over and asked for documents. You can even be stopped in the street by CID and asked for your identification papers. Don't worry. As all was in order, it's fine.

It is definitely not AED 370 if you are applying from within the country, the 'change status' fee etc is much more. They have separate delivery & assembly charges. I think the delivery charge is 100 AED. Then assembly is 300 AED. So if you are buying one item and having it delivered and assembled it's an extra 400 AED on top of the price. Pretty expensive really.

I don't think an influx of crowds has anything to do with Dubai winning the Expo. It's peak season for the UAE for tourism and that is reflected by everything we see around us at the moment, hotels were at 80% occupancy for December, and malls and restaurants are generally very busy with tourists. All of which means better GDP for the UAE and a better economic outlook for all of us and our jobs. :) Rents and property prices continue to rise - as long as these are kept in check with nothing too rapid and as long as employers are monitoring this and keeping it in mind when it comes to annual salary increases and inflationary increases then the UAE continues to be a great place to live and work. I think many people who could afford to live in a villa or a bigger property during the 'down' years are now finding themselves in a situation where they have to move to a smaller property better suited to their budget. It's also interesting to see that more people are thinking of buying property instead of renting.

He has a company called Space Design but their website doesn't seem to be available anymore www.spacedesign.ae - he's done a couple of jobs for us and was fine but I don't think they are well known so you may not get a lot of research done! We had split a/c's installed on the wall as the central a/c in our place is not great. We found we were having to run the central a/c for hours on end just to cool the house to a reasonable temperature which still wasn't good enough in summer. The split a/c's are amazing, they cool the room down in just a few minutes, are much cheaper to run and actually though we were worried about the look you don't really notice them. You can then also have them room by room instead of putting central a/c on to cool multiple rooms!
