Hmm, not sure Berna would be cheaper than that, by the time you factor in material etc. Worth checking, but also look in Monsoon, Debenhams etc - especially during sale time you can get some lovely dresses in there.

There is no such thing as someone being on their 'own visa' despite what tales she spins you! She has bought (illegally) her visa by paying a hefty sum to a sponsor. It won't take her long to make that money back though as she works part time all over the place. Good thing you checked it out OP. This maid will be deported whenever she is caught, and you just saved yourself 100,000 AED in fines.

Before making any decisions please bear in mind that the UAE has a truly global workforce which includes people from countries where diseases are prevalent that are not in our home countries. While you may think that there is no need to vaccinate, the diseases have been irradicated in our home countries because of these vaccinations. Choosing not to vaccinate your child in a part of the world which hosts people from all over the world, you are opening your child (and effectively the children around them) to these diseases. You would also find it hard to enroll your child in a school/nursery, as they are supposed to ask for your vaccination certificate on enrolling. (Not lecturing or pushing you towards a decision but just asking you please to research!)

Hi Simples :) There is a lady in Karama called Berna who usually only makes wedding dresses but you can give her a call and see if she is quiet she may do it (I believe she sometimes does bridesmaids which would probably be similar). Her number is on EW somewhere if you search. She has lots of bridal magazines etc, and you just pick what you like and she copies it. She is fab and very reasonable and would also suggest or source the material for you. Tip, the prom is 2 weeks before it actually is ;)

Some of the banks do GBP accounts if it is just for paying cheques in. Barclays, Emirates NBD etc. HTH.

Giggles, not sure anyone has mentioned this to you but you do know that you will not be able to be on your OH visa as you are not married? (And in fact will be living illegally?) - maybe you are planning to marry before you get here, in which case all would be fine.

Hatta Fort Hotel is lovely for a minibreak. No beach, but nice mountain-fresh air and lovely scenery. A little bit "back in time" (the hotel has not changed substantially over the last 30 years) but lovely for a weekend. Hope you feel better soon.

you (general you) can go to Immigration :) but if you have the PRO card for your office it's easier as otherwise (for example) if you are processing the residence visa for someone that person will need to go along with you. If you are submitting papers with the PRO card you can do anything and don't need the person it relates to accompany you. Someone from a PRO company/Business Admin company will have a PRO card for that office and will also be able to submit things on your behalf but will charge you accordingly. you can also (through PRO companies) hire a dedicated PRO for your office that you can pay a monthly fee for, as opposed to just paying randomly when you need something.

Is your company in federal Dubai or in a free zone, many of the free zone immigration centres will only allow whoever holds the PRO card for that company to approach their desks, so you will need to bear that in mind. There are PRO companies and there are also other companies for example FixIT UAE http://www.fixituae.com/ who will do business administration.

Not sure how it would work as you would have pork/allergy/issues etc, also how do you all fit in the same kitchen or have enough pots?!. OP you should invest in a slow cooker (bung it all in the morning and come home and it is ready) or just do some cooking at the weekend, if you do 2 or 3 things at the weekend and freeze up portions of it (i.e. with rice etc for a meal) then it's just a case of bunging it in micro when you come home. Or be done with it and get a maid! :-p

Yup all parking meters :) if you don't have enough credit it won't work, it will reject it but send you the sms saying it didn't work. :) Happy Noroz by the way ;)

Did you know that visitors (for the 33 nationalities which get automatic visa on arrival) - can have Egate cards? Did you know that if your fingerprint doesn't work on Egate, wipe your brow, in order to work the scan needs an oily fingerprint, wiping your brow will give your finger the oil it needs to work.

I really hate having to pay for parking. Not so much because of the cost, but the inconvenience of having to walk to the machine, pay in coins (which I don't always have) and back to the car...in the stifling heat. Coins are a thing of the past! you don't need them anymore. You can either do:- Text 7275 Plate Number SPACE AREA CODE (on parking meter) SEND You will get an immediate reply saying when your parking expires. Ten minutes before it expires you will receive an SMS asking if you want to extend. OR you can use your NOL card (Metro/bus). We need a new thread for things like this!!!

Hi SM. Is it the PO Box your DH's company is registered to? Might be. (that their PRO probably collects mail from). If so, you can just give him the slip of paper and he can collect. Or, it'll be a nice wee outing for you. An abra across the creek and a streetside samosa, couldn't be better. I'll go for you :-p

Purple, do you know about plant-y things? I tried to decipher the back of the seed packets :( but couldn't :( - what do all those dots MEAN?! so ended up planting whole bunch of things this week :D but no idea if it's the right month or whatever. Will just keep watering and hope for the best! Do you do all the seedling/tray thing? I couldn't be bothered.....
