About 40 mins assuming you are out of Mirdif with no problems, straight down MBZ road, swing a right at Um Suqeim St to Al Khail Rd, then another right at Kamila St, a left at Dubai Intl Academy which goes straight into the back of JLT. Really not too bad. On the way back it will depend what time you are leaving, but avoid Hessa St in any direction.

I think a letter from DH's HR assuring them visa is under process and will be finalised by the time it reaches port (they can even enclose copies of whatever bits they have started visa process with) will sort it out.

I used to work for Crown Relocations and before that Allied Pickfords and we often customs cleared and delivered household shipments before the residence visa was finished. I think it used to be allowed but I believe now the visa has to be in place before it is released from port.

Your shipping shouldn't clear the port in UAE without DH's visa, but it should be able to leave now. If required you could get your DH's HR Dept to provide a letter confirming employment & that his visa is under process, that should help. edited by Tattie Bogle on 20/09/2014

Oldtimer - Because this service is only in T3, if you are flying any other airline or into another airport then you need an Egate. BritsAbroad, if you can't find the telephone number you can go into Immmigration nr Trade Centre roundabout and speak to the Egate counter there and see if they can help.

I love Jumeirah Beach Park and also Mamzar Beach Park, as both the beaches have tall palm trees on the beach, it makes them look so pretty. :) http://www.freeimagebazaar.com/deal-images/large-a-long-shot-of-trees-at-al-mamzar-beach-park_freeimagebazaar-518e6cdeb2e8f-mamzar.jpg

) *Abra is a good shout, I think it's 150Dhs for a 1 hour private cruise. You can spend half a day doing that and wondering around the various souks Or just 1 AED in each direction to sit on the boat with the normal population who use the Abra for their daily travel back and forth across the creek - which is much more fun :)

thanks for the advice MMM. I believe that as the seller has dispatched the item and it did reach Dubai, according to Ebay's regulations she has fulfilled her obligations. I don't think she is responsible in terms of obligation to the buyer for it having turned round again and being sent back to the UK, but she is being particularly [i'>unhelpful [/i'> - it was last seen at a sorting office in the UK and she won't do anything about it. :/: Never mind I got another one. :)

It's always much cooler when you are actually on the beach, and it's definitely getting better in the morning. As long as you are out of the sun between 12-3 I think it would be ok! Winter is coming! Yipee!

You are also likely to get a much better response/outcome from a shop on Ebay rather than a private seller, mine was a private seller and she refuses to take any action with Royal Mail in the UK to look for the missing item, and Royal Mail will only deal with her as she is the sender. It was an antique item which was quite expensive so lesson learned! grr.

Probably lucky it was just a 500 AED fine as it would come under the same category as part time maids/part time gardeners etc. Anything you don't get a receipt for you can consider to be illegal.

So she is basically incredibly homesick, grieving, not able to speak your languages properly, lonely and isolated. What about asking the Embassy to give you details of some other maids who can speak her language that she can spend her Fridays with, give her something to look forward to. It sounds as though you have now got to the root cause of the issue and that things will improve.

Nobody seems to have addressed what it is she is doing when she is 'hiding' in her room. Does she have internet access? Is it that she is whiling away the hours chatting with her family, and is the root cause of these issues homesickness? Or is she actually properly hiding, sitting in her room moping on her own? Or, worse, is she actually hiding something from you and needs to limit the time she spends with you in case you notice her condition. It's all possible. Can you give us some more information?

That's a good idea for LT's passport situation. It is quite interesting to see the split between cities, Glasgow is apparently firmly Yes while Edinburgh is No. I do think there are going to be problems after the result, whatever the result is. edited by Tattie Bogle on 14/09/2014

Isn't being stateless the same for UK passports now? I might be wrong but... If I had my kids in the UAE and their partner was not born in UK but they both have UK passports then they had their kids in Singapore (for example) then isn't there an issue with automatic right to a UK passport for their kids? OK, I added this at the same time as TB.. edited by nicedaynat on 13/09/2014 Yes I think the birth has to take place in the UK otherwise no automatic right to a passport is given.

it's not a question of that Izzy, it's a relevant point for people who live abroad, have their children abroad, and when those children have spent little or no time in their 'home country' at all. What happens to those children when they have[i'> their[/i'> children abroad? People may be right if they think those people are not entitled to a passport from that country (whether it is Scotland or any other country) but then where DO they obtain a passport from if they live somewhere like the UAE which doesn't grant citizenship. It's a whole big pickle of bother.

If Scotland does vote to leave the UK, why would Scots think they can keep their UK passport? That's not what LT and I are discussing, it's the uncertainty of not being entitled to ANY passport, even Scottish, if you continue to live abroad and have your children abroad, and potentially becoming stateless in years to come.

I really hadn't done too much research or reading on it all until DH asked earlier today what happens to passports/citizenship for expats, and children of expats who are born abroad and [i'>those [/i'>children's children, if they are born abroad. Do you really think a YES vote will happen though LT? Although I would love Scotland to be its own little country, it all sounds too complicated to sort out. Would not like to have to be making the voting decision this week!

They've sat so nicely and been so good all day that it does tend to 'all come out' in a familiar environment, lol. Don't forget they are also mostly exhausted from a new school routine and the heat at this time of year, it takes a few weeks to adjust and get into the swing of things. Tantrums, meltdowns and general grumpiness all perfectly normal at this time of year. And that's just the mums! :-P

The FeelPink salon offers a home service, but they vastly increased their prices last year and now it feels more expensive than going to a salon. I don't think the blow dry will be within your price range :( but may be worth negotiating if you will be a regular customer.

It's quite difficult to get them and also to get them with a long expiry date. Certain hospitals will only issue them if you have had the prescription issued by a GP in that hospital (I'm sure American Hospital do this and possibly Medcare too however Medcare may accept your Mediclinic prescription, I'd call to ask). Emirates Hospital issue with a prescription from GPs outside their hospital however the shelf life on them is quite short. If you can (and are allowed to with UAE regulations) bring them in from abroad then that would be the best option!

Hi AC, welcome to the UAE. There's no Primark, but for cheapy bits like Tshirs, vest tops, leggings etc, the best place is Max which you'll find in MCC, Oasis, Ibn Batutta. We also have Matalan and F&F (The tesco clothing range), Matalan you'll find in MCC or Lamcy plaza, F&F in Oasis. Both are more expensive than UK but still pretty cheap overall.
