Another thing to be aware of within the Meadows is the finishings, they can be quite different depending on which Phase of building they were part of. Meadows 9 was the last to be completed, quite a time after the others, but the finishings in some contain just very plain white cupboard doors and room doors, where some of the other Phases had really lovely quality ones. Similarly with bathroom tiling etc, some are very nicely finished with lovely tiling while others are quite plain and bare. As a previous poster said, beware of Damas trees in your property and your neighbours, it is now 10 years since these trees were planted as the owners were encouraged to by the landscapers (!) and the roots will be very widespread and deep.

at that age there is only so much you can do. They are too young to reason with or understand and a little too old to hope they'll sleep much. Yes you may get tutted at, frowned at etc, but you'll get through it and soon be at the other end. Don't worry too much about it!

The afternoon tea at the Address (think it was the Palace?) overlooking BK is really yummy. And you have a choice of arabic or normal. The one at the Park Hyatt (unfortunately as it is such a good venue and usually fabulous) really wasn't very good at all :(

my husband and i regularly travelled back and forth between the UK and here - carrying liquid chemo, fentanyl patches and morphine - the only thing i ever had with me was a letter from the oncology dept of the hospital saying what we had with us and his personal details. never had any bother at all, carried it in our hand luggage and showed the letter without any issues whatsoever. good luck. I'm sure everything would be fine if OP's Dad did that, however with cases like this http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/southern_counties/4500665.stm it is better to be safe and do the right thing.

You can do this at Immigration (probably best to go to the one near Trade Centre roundabout).

Hi TT, Technically what you are supposed to do is not just carry the prescription, but have it attested by the UAE Embassy in your home country before you travel with it. With such serious medication, this would be the best way of ensuring that you are doing the right thing, they will also have the most up to date information on which drugs should be on the list. HTH.

When I don't know what to cook, I cook biryani or makboos - easy, delicious, and difficult to mess up. Hmm, I can mess up biryani spectacularly! Please post your fool proof recipe! :) DH and I are trying to lose our summer tummies so we'll mostly be having healthy salads all week. Beetroot/feta/walnut, Chickpea/coriander/couscous/pepper. Haven't got much further than that yet.

We removed all our grass as it literally is just like throwing money away and replaced it with tiles but have all the walls surrounded with low-water consumption plants like bamboo, bourganvilia, desert rose, almond trees etc. The garden feels really green with high plants but it doesn't cost a lot at all. Also it's worth having irrigation installed rather than having someone stand there with a hose pipe pouring out water.

Hi PoshBird Try the French Hairdressing Academy (think it's Loreal?) at Knowlege Village, they do free haircuts and colour for AED 100. The trainee hairdressers are well supervised, but they do take a long time, so don't go in a rush. Enjoy! :)

The nearest mall to Dubai Intl Airport is Bin Sougat - you'll find a pharmacy in there assuming you are arriving in to T1/T3, but it may be worth checking you can carry the medication into Doha if you are unable to get it there?

Hi Polly - Coconut Oil is available absolutely everywhere. You'll find it in any grocery in the oil aisle (usually the blue bottle parachute brand) or bizarrely if not there you'll find it in the hair aisle. :D For the 'better' coconut oil you'd probably have to visit a health shop. What do you mean by coconut flour?. As all parts of a coconut are used in so many varieties of Indian cooking you'll find everything coconut related here and you'll especially find everything in Lulus.

Hmm - it's interesting as part of the new visa rules are being interpreted as all nationalities having to stay out of the country for 30 days (unless you are in the country for <14 days) - this would effectively mean an end to visa runs. I am not sure but it would be good to get clarification on this.

I think the Widdad centre follows a similar style of teaching. For alternative organic produce you can check out Greenheart online delivery, their eggs for example are much cheaper than Spinneys. The UAE has started a lot of organic farming and you'll find the produce (sometimes well hidden as it is cheaper than imported!) But there is now quite a good range of local fresh organic green beans, herbs, cucumbers, aubergines, okra etc and very reasonably priced.

Bit of a tricky time of year as it's hot, but also a great opportunity for you to get out and explore the UAE by car :) - Al Ain Zoo is a really nice wildlife park (check if the night zoo timings are still running, it opens at 4pm. Very cheap to get in (10-15 AED) and from 4pm onwards it's quite bearable. Food options inside are not great so you'll see lots of people picnicking with big pots of biryani etc :) - Loads of museums and centres in Sharjah including aquarium, wildlife centre etc, all very reasonably priced - Sharjah blue souk is nice for a walk around - Have a wander around Dubai's older areas. The creek area and abra ride will cost you a dirham each to get from one side to the other, you can explore the spice souk, textile souq etc, again from around 5pm it will be much cooler. There are a few nice restaurants right on the water and watching the world go by at mosque time is lovely. :) - Take a drive over to the other Emirates, you can drive to Fujeirah/Khor Fa Khan by heading towards Hatta and then taking a left turn through the mountain tunnels out to the other side, it's a really nice drive and gives you a different perspective with deserts, mountains, sea views etc. Stop for lunch at the Hatta Fort Hotel which has been around for a long time and which hasn't changed much! - Hatta also has a Heritage Village but doesn't open til around 4pm - Jebel Hafeet is one of the highest mountains in the UAE, nice for a drive in the summer when there's not much else to do, take a drive to the top and have some chai and enjoy the view! - Going out in to the desert at this time of year is nice, if you go in the early evening take a picnic and enjoy, make sure there is more than one car though if you are venturing out. Have fun exploring the UAE!

Hi Ellaar As far as I know you can obtain a mortgage for off-plan properties, but I think your mortgage payments begin from the time you purchase (i.e. now) so you may wish to recheck the expected date of handover. Handover dates rarely happen when they are meant to as the buildings are subject to municipality approval, DEWA connections etc, so if you are paying from now until say May 2016 before you receive the property it may make a difference to whether you want to go ahead or not. A good website which follows the construction of the property until handover is www.skyscrapercity.com

RT I had to go down this route as sandwiches normally come back uneaten! I get sausage rolls, pizzas, (even cheese puffs don't tell anyone) from places like Choitrams, they have snacky type food in the bakery. The latest problem is that we don't eat anything that is supposed to be hot but is cold in a lunch box (like a sausage roll). <rolling eyes>

Bounce is really quite expensive! Especially if you are taking 4. You could go to Childrens City, 15 AED each to get in for the day, it is not soft play but they will use up their energy going to all the different places. (It's a science centre, if you haven't been before, lots of different areas & interactive things. it also has a planetarium) If you time it right and it's late afternoon when you leave it may just be cool enough for a football kickaround in creek park on the way out. edited by Tattie Bogle on 26/08/2014

Hi, No egate for children. -Your DS can land in UAE and have his new passport stamped as a visitor. There is every possibility that Immigration will know this is a new passport of an existing resident but if you have copies of everything (inc Dad's passport/visa as the sponsor) then you will be fine. -You should get a police report to say that the passport is lost. It may just be easier to get that done here, if you do it there you'll have to have it attested etc.. - Once here, it is a relatively simple process to have the old visa put in the new passport, you'll need DH and his signature and a trip to immigration. ETA Immigration may also ask to see the exit report from Airport Immigration on the way out (so you may want to pick that up when you land, to save time). edited by Tattie Bogle on 22/08/2014

oh goody!!! It's like one of those 'choose an ending' stories you used to get in days of yore. "Beebers accepted the Bud with trepidation. But where was the Mrs? And why was Mr being so friendly? There had to be more the story. Just then, the back door crashed open and Mrs fell in with half a bottle of Mothers Ruin. Beebers began to feel she stumbled in on a daytime nightclub. She quickly picked up her mop bucket and ran to the downstairs closet but it was too late. Mrs had spotted the two open bottles of Bud and began to scream uncontrollably. Beebers hid in the closet for some time taking the DDs with her. Along with Ken (the doll) for company. Company for the DDs, not for Beebers. After a while, the screeching stopped and Beebers opened the closet door, remembering to take the DDs out too before closing it. The house was silent apart from some soft music. Beebers followed the music and found Mr & Mrs in the hot tub listening to Foreigner's Best Hits. Returning Ken to the DDs Beebers decided that from now on, a maid's life was not for her. making a snap decision, she quickly called her local travel agent and asked for the first flight to Dxb. And that, is how Beebers ended up in Dubai".

I was just pondering as I started off as a) with feet up (heck it's Thursday and it's been a hard week!) but then swiftly moved to c) to hide in the bedroom, which led to more pondering about whether sitting with feet up while someone dusts round you is acceptable behaviour which led to more pondering about what other people think on this matter.
