Hi ecochic and thanks for the reply. Nope not those though. The leaves are very symmetrical, in 2 rows on either side of a central stem making up a larger leaf iykwim. They're quite small leaves, oval shaped and about 1cm in length.

Thanks BB2, believe me I appreciate how extremely lucky we are...I honestly thought they'd laugh at me, talk about right place, right time!! Our budget is 150k up to absolute max 160 & I really want a garden as we have a beautiful one now & kids are out there all day in winter. I'm thinking KCA on airport rd side so away from schools for traffic but MBZ is also nice, we lived there 2 years ago & was very easy to get into town. Is KCB the area near mafraq hotel? I wouldn't mind having a look there, will have to drive round. Are there for rent signs up on houses or is it only through agents? Thanks again x

Thanks everyone for the great advice. Quite unbelievably due to cancellations we got places at BSAK! Needless to say we're thrilled :-) Has been a crazy couple of days but the kids will be in the car with DH and I on Thursday...now I just have to find us somewhere to live! Thanks again for all the help

Hi, check out Ladybird nursery. They're not far from you in a villa in karama just behind bateen co-op. It's run by 2 English ladies both called Susan. Facilities are a bit dated but we loved it. Our 2 went there 2 years back now and we paid dh1500 a month for 5 days a week. Another plus - they don't close for school holidays, only public holidays so great for working parents. Sorry don't have their number any more but you can google it. Good luck!

Hi all, Miss Lucie arrived safe and sound at 13.51 on 27th march weighing 3.57kg. She's absolutely perfect :-) the C section actually wasn't as bad as last time & recovery incredibly quick, catheter & IV were removed the following morning, had shower & just on painkillers. They might even let me go home today! We're working on breastfeeding & my nipples feel like they've been put through a blender but will persevere... American hospital has been great except they keep wanting to take baby away to the nursery, I have to keep insisting that she's staying with me. Very, very happy :-) hope to meet you all soon x

hi all and congratulations Pingu! Well I'm still here :-( Been having contractions every 10 minutes pretty much since Saturday so went to the Dr yesterday full of hope only to discover that my cervix is still firmly closed. What with my hormones all over the place I broke down in tears in her office...not my finest moment. Looks like my VBAC dreams are rapidly disappearing. Csection is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 8am so one way or another I will be holding my little girl by this time tomorrow :-) The Dr suggested I go for a long walk to see if we can get those contractions to move along so DH and I are headed to Dragonmart! I did get to ask all the questions about things that had bothered me last time in the CS so feeling a bit more comfortable about it now. Also had a chat with the big kids last night about what will happen this week and they seem to be totally cool with it all so clearly I was worried unnecessarily! So counting down the last 24 hours...can't believe I'm nearly 41 weeks, I was so sure it would be early. Anyway best of luck to anyone else still waiting and would definitely be up for a march mums meet up :-)

Hi there, meant to reply to your other thread but didn't get round to it! We moved into District 4 in January and loving it so far, especially the huge garden for the kids to run around in. Which district are you in? the whole development is supposed to be finished by 2013 and they are working on landscaping/parks and apparently pools at the moment. It may be a little while yet though. We have quite a few friends within the community which makes a huge difference too. You're more than welcome to come round for a coffee next week - am a bit busy this week having a baby!!! All the best x

Congratulations AussiePup :-) I'm still here...40 weeks on thursday and lil Miss just doesn't seem to want to join us. I am sooooo fed up. Had a sweep on Sunday (that was, um, different) but the lazy bu55er still not budging. Have my final appointment on Sunday and if she hasn't turned up by then it will have to be a CS...was really hoping for a VBAC and will be really disappointed if I don't get to experience it as this is definitely my last one. Mind you at this point I just want to meet my baby and not be pregnant any more! Anyone else still waiting?

Hi Barmy Army and congratulations :-) I had my twins as a result of my 4th IVF attempt and went for the 6 week scan on Xmas Eve 2007 to discover 3 sacs in there! DH's jaw literally dropped and he didn't say a word for 4 straight hours which is unheard of. There were 2 strong heartbeats and they weren't sure what would happen with the third one...by 8 weeks it had a heartbeat but by 10 weeks had disappeared. Having spent 4 weeks getting used to the idea of triplets and reading up about what that entailed, it seemed a positive doddle to just have 2 babies lol! They went all the way to 38 weeks and were perfectly healthy - don't let people scare you with statistics that 50% of multiples come early, that still means that 50% are full term (which is 37 weeks for twins anyway). The early days were a bit of a sleepless blur but in hindsight it was all over so quickly. Mine are a boy and a girl and now 3.5 years old. They are very close and depend on each other a great deal. They also play together all the time which is when you get the rewards of having 2 the same age as you're not their sole source of entertainment! having twins is brilliant and I wouldn't change it for the world :-) Best of luck to you xxx

Congratulations to gingercat and giggles and thinking of you today redleaf! AussiePup how are you feeling now? Hopefully the infection is all gone? Ayda247 any news? Ayten did the twins arrive safely? Twins are brilliant btw, my 2 are completely bonkers :-) Pingu just wanted to add re your daughter that she might be a bit freaked out by seeing you all tied up with tubes, wires, catheter etc and flat on your back after C-section as you won't be able to get up for 24 hours or so after the op. I've said to my DH that if I do end up having to have a CS that I don't want him to bring the kids in til the next day so that I can at least be sitting up and give them a cuddle. it really depends on how you think she'll cope with it - did you have a CS last time? As for me, I'm at 38+4 today and very much ready for little madam to come out! Dr reckons it will probably be this week but nothing seems to be happening and I'm scaring myself silly by watching birth videos on the net :-( Really hoping for a nice easy VBAC but getting a bit scared now. Bag has been packed and by the door for 3 weeks now...hurry up kiddo! All the best to the other March mummies, looking forward to hearing your birth announcements xxx

Dear Confusion As another fellow IVF-er I just want to wish you luck and strength. I hear Dr P at Conceive is great (my friend was successful with him). Yes your age is a factor but there are plenty of success stories out there from women significantly older than you. I had 3 failed cycles before my 4th successful one. Was ready to give up because of the mental / emotional stress but Dr convinced me it was a numbers game and to keep trying... now i thank my lucky stars every day that I kept going :-) Good luck and keep us posted. Sending you lots of baby dust xxx

I have a fabulous cheat's recipe that is quite light and always goes down well: For the cream mix: whip together 10 fl oz whipping cream, 10 fl oz mascarpone or cream cheese and a tin of Nestle condensed milk until thick. Make a bowl of strong coffee and add a glug of brandy. Dip sponge fingers into the coffee mix and use to line your dish. spread half the cream mix over then dust with cocoa powder. Repeat for second layer and chill in fridge to set. Yum :-)

Hi ladies I've actually just been doing some research on this and come up with the following: The following information is from both Gulf News and The National: The part-time work permit applies to four categories of persons: 1. Resident workers in full-time employment holding a valid labour card 2. Co-dependent sponsored residents i.e: housewives on their husband's sponsorship 3. Residents aged 18 and above 4. Government employees Those issued with a part-time work permit are not limited to the number of part-time jobs they can take up. The government can issue a part-time work permit despite the objection of a full-time employer and an individual's residency status if there is a labour case raised at the courts through the labour ministry. The part-time permits will be valid for just a year. Female dependents and students will not need a work permit, nor will the expatriate husbands and sons of Emirati women. However, employers are directed to give priority to UAE and GCC citizens. Companies need to have a clean record of compliance with labour laws, and be registered in the wages protection system before they can hire part-time workers. Part-time permits cost Dh500 per employee. This is the link to the Ministry of Labour website : http://www.mol.gov.ae/newMolGateway/english/newIndex.aspx The MOL site seems to say that housewives etc need to apply for a permit whereas the information in the newspapers says they don’t need to. Anyone have any further info on this? HTH

Hi Dallydoo As asouheir said there are different protocols (long and short) and different types of medications which your doctor will recommend based on your particular issue. The long protocol involves suppressing your normal system before artificially stimulating the follicles to grow whereas the short protocol follows your natural cycle and therefore would start on day 2 of your cycle with stimulating hormones. They will monitor the follicle growth via internal ultrasounds (daily towards the end) and then around the middle of your cycle once you have sufficient follicles they will give you a single shot to mature the eggs and then exactly 36 hours later you have the retrieval. This is done under sedation and you'll be rather uncomfortable for a couple of days after this. DH obviously has to be there that day for his contribution. On the third day they do the embryo transfer which doesn't require sedation - it's just like having a smear test except you have to have a full bladder which isn't fun! You can carry on as normal after the embryo transfer although I took the opportunity to lie on the sofa for 3 days :-) You then go in for test after 10 days - the agonising 2 week wait! I got a urine sample container from a pharmacy so I could take in my first morning sample rather than wait til I got there. They also do a blood test at the same time. Physically its not too bad (although I can't say as I enjoyed the daily needles and post-op discomfort) but the really hard bit is the mental part. There are lots of online forums where you can find people going through the same thing and get support. I found reading other people's stories and comments helpful even if I didn't feel up to posting myself. I had 3 unsuccessful cycles before the one that resulted in a pair of now very noisy 3 year olds :-) While it was a dark time, it brought DH and I closer and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't look at my kids with immense gratitude & amazement and remember that there was a time I didn't think they'd exist. I wish you every success and am happy to chat offline if it will help. x

He was really great, speaks fantastic English and handled the whole thing without me being there - gave him the number for the guy I bought the bed from and our housemaid's number and hey presto, came home to a new bed! first time in 14 years in the UAE that anything's gone quite so smoothly :-)

Hi Greenish Would you mind sharing where you sourced the blue metal from? I'm not having much success finding it! Also, what sort of paving did you use? I'm not hugely keen on interlock and its quite expensive anyway. Have seen some nice rough paving tiles at Dragonmart but I guess we'd need to have a poured concrete base to fix these on to? Your garden sounds lovely! many thanks :-)

Hi redleaf, I'm due 22nd March, starting to get excited about meeting little Miss now :-) I have a check up with the Dr tomorrow so waiting to see if they normally book an elective C-section earlier than 40 weeks as I have no idea. With the twins they were both breech so I had to have them by C/S at 38 weeks. Dr doesn't seem to be too keen on the idea of VBAC - I can't decide which one is worse! Made the fatal mistake of watching a video of someone giving birth yesterday which scared the bejeezus out of me. On the other hand recovery from C/S is no picnic either. Anyone else given thoughts to this? it would be so much easier if they actually were delivered by stork :-)

Hi Ladies so I guess it's safe to come on here now... I'm 22+3 with a pink bump :-) didn't want to put it out there or tell the big kids until after the big scan at 21 weeks but all is fine yippee! The kids are very excited and keep wanting to see their new baby sister every 5 minutes - 4 months is a long time when you're 3! I'm feeling pretty good now and actually looking pregnant instead of just fat. Need to start thinking about shopping for bub, of course I just cleared out the last of the baby stuff 6 months ago! How is everyone else feeling? x

Hi Ladies As far as I know there is no free IVF treatment - it depends on whether your insurance covers it which most don't. We went with DGFC and at the time (2006) we paid around AED20K per cycle including meds but I know they've increased their prices. Embryo transfer alone was 3K earlier this year. I know corniche hospital in Abu Dhabi offers it and as its government is presumably a bit cheaper. Al Noor hospital Abu Dhabi is also supposed to be good. Best to ring them and ask for their price list. There's also Conceive in Sharjah which is highly rated. Best of luck.

Hi melinda Yes we did all 4 (actually 5 with this one!) of our IVF's through Dr Mohamed. After TTC unsuccessfully for some time we went to see Dr M for an inital consultation and general work up to see if we could identify any problems. DH is fine and all my bloodwork was ok and ovulating normally but the HSG (hysterosalpingogram - basically they inject die into your tubes and xray to see if everything's working) showed blocked fallopian tubes. Dr M said that we could either try an operation to open up the tubes and wait to see if it happened naturally or go straight to IVF. Statistically, the chances of the operation being successful were not great and we may have had to have IVF anyway after waiting another year and we were already into our thirties so decided to go straight to IVF. The first couple of unsuccessful cycles revealed that the secondary problem was my very thin womb lining which should be over 7mm in order for embryos to successfully implant (and ideally between 8-13mm) whereas mine barely got over 5. Tried various hormones and acupuncture to thicken it up but the magic cure for me was the Viagra which got it up to 9mm in a week :-) Again, this is my personal experience and every case is different but I would recommend that you have an initial consultation with Dr M to see what he says. If he doesn't think you need to do IVF yet he'll tell you - he's very good at giving you all the options and information and then letting you make your own decision. Wishing you the very best of luck and lots of baby dust :)

Hi Melinda Sorry, I meant to reply to this earlier but got sidetracked with boring old work. I've been with Dr Mohammed at DGFC since 2006 and conceived my twins with his help as well as the current one that is due next March! I can't recommend him and the team at DGFC highly enough! He is a genuinely lovely man who seems to care about his patients and you really feel like a person and not just a number with him. He's open-minded and willing to try different approaches (I ended up using Viagra to thicken my womb lining on both successful occasions which is a fairly experimental treatment although harmless but I know some doctors in the UK just refuse point blank to even consider it). The nurses are wonderful and so kind and supportive. Even the receptionists and the embryologists seem to be personally invested in the patients! I'll never forget how excited and happy they all were for us when we finally had a positive result. Overall the clinic has pretty high success rates (around 45-50%) which is well above worldwide averages. I wish you the very best of luck and hope to see you back here soon with a bfp! :-)

If your infertility wasn't 'unexplained', i.e. there was a definite cause for it which had to be treated then I'm afraid you're very unlikely to get pregnant naturally. The "I know someone who had IVF and then conceived naturally" line ranks right up there with "just relax and you'll get pregnant" in terms of irritating things people say to infertiles :\: There are some very good IVF doctors here but be warned that it's highly unlikely to be covered by your medical insurance so you may want to get some idea of the costs ahead of time. A full IVF cycle with meds is over AED20,000. I would suggest that you go and have an initial consultation with an IVF specialist to see what your options are and what the overall costs will be so that you can make an informed decision. We were with Dr Mohammed at DGFC who I can recommend highly! Dr Pankaj at Conceive in Sharjah is also very good and I hear lots of ladies on here recommend Dr Fakih - you may find his contact details if you do a search on here. While you are obviously very happy to have your daughter, you may ultimately feel that your family is incomplete as it stands. I really think you need more information before you can decide. Only you can make the decision as to your own personal circumstances and what is right for you and your family. Whatever you decide I wish you the very best of luck on your journey, I'm happy to chat if it will help.

Hi Melinda So sorry you’ve been unlucky this time. I had 4 IVF cycles over 4 years before I was lucky enough to have my twins. I personally wanted to take a break after each failure to heal both mentally and physically, however that’s not necessarily right for everyone and some people prefer to get straight back in the saddle (or should that be stirrups?!). It’s really a case of whether you yourself feel ready to get on to the next attempt or not. Infertility is a horrible, horrible disease and any level of assisted reproductive treatment is painful, emotional, expensive and generally soul-destroying…but ultimately worth it in the end. What helped me was to view each failure as getting one step closer to the goal of having a child – we had a roadmap of how many cycles of different interventions we were willing to do before drawing a line under it and moving on to adoption (not that adoption should ever be construed as a ‘second best’ – we had done a LOT of research and a LOT of soul searching and decided that it was the route for us but it isn’t for everyone). I also found some great infertility websites, support groups and blogs which were invaluable in providing information and support. A couple of blogs that I still love are www.alittlepregnant.com and www.tertia.org I really wish you every success with your journey and hope that you find the strength to see you through it. I’m happy to chat if you want to talk to someone who’s been there.

Hi Melinda I'm taking 400mg twice a day as I'm pregnant through IVF (had to use my remaining frozen embryos before they would be destroyed). Cyclogest is just progesterone (a normal pregnancy hormone) which helps to support the pregnancy in the early stages until the placenta can take over at 12 weeks. I've been taking it for nearly 12 weeks & have no side effects to speak of. Only downside is that the pessaries tend to...um...ooze out of you a bit about 15 mins after taking it, even if you lie down immediately. Not really much to worry about with it, HTH

Hi yes you can, just keep going straight on the main road past Spinneys, past the Building Blocks nursery, straight over all the traffic lights and you'll eventually come out of motor city and into sports city. If you want Victory heights go over the little bridge but if you want sports city buildings then turn right before the bridge and follow the roads around the perimeter until you reach the cricket stadium then turn left. HTH.

I quit 8 years ago after 15 years of smoking and haven't looked back - I did it through Paul McKenna's hypnosis CD, took an hour to read the book and listen to the CD and that was it! DH gave up 3 years ago and was a very heavy smoker (3 packs a day for over 20 years). He used Champix which I highly recommend to anyone that's a serious smoker trying to give up, available through pharmacies only. My Dad also used it after over 40 years of smoking and is still off the cigs 6 months on.

I'm in the same boat trying to get FS1 places for my 2. Virtually every school seems to have closed waiting lists or have hundreds on there. The Childrens garden may have places come September (waitlisted for now) but are monstrously expensive! Wellington Primary (not the international one but the one behind shangri la) told me they only have 10 kids on the waiting list for september. Emirates International Meadows said they have 120 applications for 105 places so those 2 seem to be the shortest lists. The new DSO Gems has places and I've just been this morning to see Bradenton in Sports City which is lovely and has places, although its American curriculum. I think I'm going to end up putting them in there for the early years and put their name down for UK/IB curriculum for the next 3 years in advance! Does anyone have any experience of whether a load of places suddenly become available in September?? Even the nurseries all seem to be full. I think FS2 is worse than FS1 as the kids who were in nursery/at home and didn't do FS1 are added into the mix...which makes me rather worried for next year!

I'm glad somebody has put up a positive maids thread :-) I too have a wonderful helper who has been with us for 3 years and is definitely a part of the family. I actually bought her a rose on Valentine's day and she was overjoyed :-) My children adore her and its obvious that she loves them too. We treat her as an adult and she manages the house without needing to be told what to do. Very occasionally she'll sit and have a be*r with us but she seems to feel more comfortable keeping some distance in her downtime, which is understandable. We took her on a holiday with us to the UK and France as a thank you and were at great pains to explain to her and everyone else that she was on holiday and not there to work...we got plenty of funny looks from people who thought we were obviously lazy expats who couldnt be bothered to look after our own children. Ho hum, don't care, she was thoroughly delighted.

We leave the house by 6.45 so its not easy to sit down and have a cooked breakfast - kudos to those who manage it! They have a healthy snack and lunchbox for nursery so I don't worry too much about it. I read somewhere that its best to look at what they've eaten over the course of a week rather than daily and you'll find that they've consumed a reasonable amount. Some days I'm convinced that my son lives on fresh air but he's a healthy and lively little fella so something must be going in. Of course, he does consume his own body weight in goldfish crackers and raisins some days...

I've just switched over to First Gulf Bank. the card is free (although I have a feeling that's only for first year) but they're doing a really good deal on balance transfers - 0.69% a month for up to 24 months or 0% for 6 months. HTH.
