Hello Muurtje, I just found this thread and was wondering if you are still looking for a tenant/need a new tenant. I hope you don't mind the enquiry! Posted this: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic193433-reckie-to-amsterdam.aspx earlier today but haven't heard from anyone...thought it may be worth contacting you. :)

Hello! Am reviving this thread (stella128 was the original OP) as we too are heading for Amsterdam (preferably, although just outside Amsterdam is a distinct option and we may have to consider even further afield depending on rents) soon. Initially we are hoping to rent a short stay, self-contained apartment outside of the centre for 3 weeks. During that time we will look for somewhere more permanent. If anyone has any contacts or advice (re. accommodation or anything else), we would be most grateful. Our initial budget (for the first 3 weeks accomodation) is tight (around 1000 euros) but we basically only need somewhere where we can do some cooking and rest when necessary as we'll be out and about looking at long term possibilities. We would prefer a peaceful area, with shops within walking distance. TIA edited by veganprincess on 20/10/2013 <em>edited by veganprincess on 20/10/2013</em>

Morning ladies and thanks for the link ChocolateQueen. :) Apricot, Le Petit Marché is in Jumeirah 1 at the Magrudy's Mall. It has 2 entrances/exits and is in one of the shops that was previously a Magrudys giftstore.

You're most welcome Parisienne. Want to add to the original list two places-Le Petit Marché in Jumeirah. It is a small supermarket at present but they do have some excellent products for vegans etc and are opening a café soon. There is also an excellent small organic store at the Hudaiba Awards building called Down to Earth. I do get a lot of inspiration from websites + blogs and there is so much available on the net. My main source is Pinterest. I recently found some excellent slow cooker recipes pinned on there. Here is a list of other favourites: http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/ http://hellyeahitsvegan.com/ http://www.veganwiz.com/ http://kblog.lunchboxbunch.com/ http://glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.ae/p/vegan-veg-index.html http://gluten-dairy-sugarfree.com/ http://ohsheglows.com/ http://parsleysoup.co.uk/ http://www.veganchef.com/ http://deliciouslyella.com/ http://vegandad.blogspot.ae/ I find these raw vegan sites/blogs useful too: http://rawfullyorganic.com/blog/ http://www.thisrawsomeveganlife.com/ http://www.alissacohen.com/news/ http://meganelizabeth.com/ns/ Hope that helps. Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with! :)

Hi Parisienne, I am a vegan (also gluten + wheat free). Here are a few places I've managed to find things I can eat...some are cafés: Lemongrass Arabian Courtyard (Bastakiya + Al Ghazal Mall) XVA (Bastakiya) Organic Supermarket (SZR) Noodle Bowl (Dhiyafrah/2nd Dec. St.) The Address (Marina) Wagamamas Carpe Diem (Jumeirah Town Centre) Comptoir 102 The One (Jumeirah) Many Indian restaurants (Kamat, Sai Dham etc) There are probably many other options and I'll add to the list if I think of anywhere. Hope this helps. I tend to ask the chef a lot of questions and double check things. Often if they are made aware in advance, they can adapt dishes. <em>edited by veganprincess on 29/08/2013</em>

Will do! Gives me time to get legs like Tywin! Speaking of Belfast are you watching The Fall? Don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen the most recent episode but was certainly satisfying to see Roose Bolton/Michael McElhatton/Rob Breedlove's story twist....:)

Me!Me!Me! Hoping to watch episode 3 tonight. Love Olivia Colman and Jodie Whittaker so was expecting it to be good. Have you watched Wallander, Forbrydelsen, Spiral and or Borgen to name a few excellent dramas from Europe? I think the makers of Broadchurch have been influenced by these which is a good thing! If you haven't seen them I recommend them. :)

Hi Alyna, I did my PGCE via Sunderland/Magrudys in 2006. The ministry were stipulating it as a necessary requirement in order to teach here, although at that point I had been teaching in an international school for 6 years. Not sure if my feedback is still current. I was working full time and it was a tough and expensive year but I enjoyed several aspects of the course-the chance to interact with people who were genuinely interested in education and the expertise of the mentors, in particular. However, IMO there was no real subject- specific teaching (I am referring to being a secondary teacher here) other than the wisdom shared by my mentors and this is something you would gain if you did the course in the UK. Also, I would suggest you might want to look at whether or not you would have any kind of teacher status if you return to your home country (the rules keep changing here). However, in answer to your question regarding 'hireability', there are many variables and the simple truth is that many jobs here are acquired through contacts. I have found that the British schools prefer QTS and recent UK experience but again that is not a hard and fast rule.

What I find interesting though in this whole debate is the comments at the end of the GN article.......mostly seem to have a tone of paranoia and fear regarding expat womens' dressing, create an unhealthy view of bodies, the message that must give to children just fuels the paranoia. That seems actually more disturbing in itself, people writing of 'scared to take my family to the mall' and 'men looking with lustful stares', 'causing disturbance between family relations'......at the end of the day its just a body part, get over it! Yes it may be 'wrong' but its not you or your family so I can't understand why they have to even look? Why don't the men just control themselves? Why can't they teach their children cultural understanding? Why bother yourself and get het up about what someone else is doing, life's too short! edited by Pomegranate on 14/05/2012 I was wondering if anyone else was thinking this. Some of the comments do seem excessive and there is the suggestion that inappropriate dress code = automatic disrespect.

Not directly related I know but I do find myself lost for words at the inappropriate music often played in shops. Yesterday within minutes of the the doors opening at Dubai Mall, lyrics which I wouldn't want to hear at [u'>any [/u'>time of day were being blasted out at great volume. Admittedly, in a few cases, I'm probably just showing my age and the references are not particularly explicit but what messages are we sending to the world when one store is playing a song about an*l rape and the store next door is blasting pout '99 problems'. Am I being too sensitive or old fashioned?

I am a vintage hoarder! I have been to Bambah on Jumeirah Beach Road...I thought things were vastly overpriced even though it was nice to see an 'alternative' shopping experience here. In ten years of living here I haven't bought/found anything vintage and tend to wait till the summer hols (UK in particular and a few other places in Europe whenever possible). You said 'stores' so maybe there's something I haven't heard about in which case please tell me more! ;)

I have had the same problems OP and have done a few tables at ARTE (Festival City better than Times Square imo) so can empathise. I make papercrafts and have struggled at fairs over here. Some great advice here and Miriam (ARTE) is lovey and has some good suggestions too. I know a few vendors have opted to share tables to cut some of the cost. Also, you could try selling on ETSY. Keep smiling!

(Just posted on F1 thread): Hop on over to the Paul McCartney thread you guys! Totally agree..thought he was absolutely BRILLIANT and demonstrated such a range of talent but with humility and joy! The best concert I've been to here by a long way......fireworks and atmosphere amazing too. Well organised and all ages seemed to be enjoying the music not just my older crowd (average age 38!). ;) Rolling Stone were there and I'm sure they will write a good review but will have to wait a wee while for it! Have been smiling all day just thinking about what a great evening it was!

Wonderful thread...I make time every year to watch Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth + Jennifer Ehle version), North and South (Richard Armitage...corr lumey)and Jane Eyre (Timothy Dalton version)....guess it's obvious why I've listed all the male leads too!!!!;) Have to take a moment........ Have also enjoyed Cranford, Downton Abbey, Age of Innocence and Rebecca....does anyone remember Precious Bane starring Janet McTeer and Clive Owen? Have just finished series 1 of Game of Thrones (not British but lots of British actors) and thought it was very good indeed...also not so much of a period drama-more like Lord of the Rings but with s*x. Thanks to everyone for all the recs!

I seem to have missed the boat on this one and wasn't aware that I needed to register???? Probably my fault....would be interested to know if there are any any other posters out there who haven't registered(see below from this site-C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\tax municipality.mht): [b'>There is a 5% tax on the yearly rent payable to Dubai Municipality (DM). Although many residents have avoided paying this for a number of years (and some haven't even heard of it), the Dubai Municipality is attempting to enforce collection of the tax via an arrangement with DEWA which will automatically add it to your utilities bill. Residents are expected to register their rental contracts on the DM website to have the tax bill added to their DEWA bills. From May 2010, the DEWA has reportedly been serving notices to residents who haven't registered their tenancy agreements with the DM. After the second warning notice, the DM say they will use the RERA Rent Index to determine taxable amount if residents don't register their rental contracts, or if they attempt to shortchange the DM by registering a lower amount than they actually pay. And too bad if that means you end up paying more than if you'd declared the correct rent in the first place. [/b'> :(
