Just out of curiosity then (playing devils advocate) why on the tins does the preparation instructions indicate using cool boiled water to prepare? Because our tins here are outdated. I think in the UK it says boil & leave it to cool, then prepare at 70 oC but here it still says prepare at 40 oC & feed at 37 oC. Even those red/blue books issued by the government for vaccines, the last page says introduce solids at 4 months & the new guideline is 6 months.

I loose weight if I cut all animal protien except fish. I had 6 extra kgs to reach my ideal weight (I'm not overweight & my BMI is within the normal range), I already lost 3 kgs in 2 weeks. I eat lots of raw veggies & salads, some legumes for extra protien, pasta (with low fat cheese, veggies, or as a salad with tuna) & 1 sandwich using brown bread. I also drink 2 glasses of skimmed milk daily. I'm exercising moderately & drink around 3 ltrs of water. I also eat one fruit before my morning coffee. I dont loose any weight if I eat meat or chicken. I dont drink juices or fizzy drinks, so those are not an issue for me.

And what about if you are going outside and need to take a few bottles with you? What is the most practical way to be 'on the move" while respecting the safety guidelines? I use NAN and as far as I know there are no ready made cartons available, please correct me if I am wrong!! A small flask with hot water (Jashnmal have small light weight ones), a 500 mls water bottle & a formula despenser. xx

It's normal hun, it really slows down after 18 months. At 2-5 years the average growth is around 1 inch per year. & There is always a measurement error as they dont usually stand very still while measuring their height.

Hurrah. I am now clear! Thanks :D. ETA: Sorry, I wasn't being deliberately dim. A week of reasonable sleep isn't quite enough to clear away the cobwebs of seven months' worth of sleep deprivation! edited by DubaiCat on 18/01/2011 I know hun, big hugs. This is the current confusion on the other thread :). I think I just 'got' what another poster was trying to explain, though. When you need a feed add a small amount of >70 degree water to the formula powder to sterilise it, then add cooled boiled water to make it up to the right amount. Then you get the safety of sterilising the powder and the safety of not having to store the feed. Right? Yes, yes yes :D I tried to explain it several times here. 1oz of hot water is enough to sterilze the whole amount of formula, then top up with cool water, & your feed is ready. It takes less than 2 mins to prepare. I was using a small flask to keep hot water esp for night feeds & when going out.

We use pampers active fit pull ups for DS day & night since he was 10 months old. You can use them up to 12 hrs at night. There are 2 types of pull ups, potty training & active fit. Pampers active fit pull ups are similar to the normal active fit nappies in terms of absorbing, but for us, the'r easier to change as DS refuses to lie down when I change his nappies. (He's 14 months)

Hi hun, I had an emergency CS at Al Wasel & DH was with me in the OR. But he wasnt allowed to come in when I was in the ward earlier. The prices at AL Wasel really increased recently, as it's a government hospital, they have lots of procedures, pre-natal apointments are not always easy to schedule according to your time, etc. You can't always get a private room after delivery & it depends on your case & availability. They also dont do any checkups for you before you'r 5-6 months pregnant & you have to go to a private clinic for checkups. I didnt like it , as I didnt get full benefits from the package I paid for, they almost killed my baby as they waited too long before the emergency CS. & I had awful post natal care. But many of my friends had great experiences there (who had normal deliveries) Many ladies here used City hospital & they were happy with it. @WA- Were you at Al wasl recently? is there any point in going to Al wasl before the 5th month to register? I had an emergency c-sec at Al wasl too....i was literally there on the last day with problems, had never registered there and wasnt hoping to go there at all. To me they saved me and my baby so my expereince was different. Now im pregnant with baby no 2 and considering going there....is there anything i should know and be prepared for for ante natal care? I want to visit a pvt gyn too...not sure if they share notes? I had DS 14 months back, & I heard that now they dont accept deliveries if you dont have a antenatal package with them. I had antenatal package, They gave me my 1st apt when I was 5.5 pregnant & they advised me to go to a private clinic for checkups before the apt date. I'm not sure about notes, but what was really irritating is seeing a different Dr. each time I had a checkup, so I had to go through the details about my pregnancy again & again. & You have to register earlier than the 5 months (I dont remember before which week), or they will not give you a package, the earlier the better. You also have to live within the area of their coverage as they ask for your house rent contract. edited by wickedangel_78 on 18/01/2011

Two saving accounts, one from me & the other one from DH. In my country we dont have any financial support by the govt, so we have to think about securing our DS future. Once he finishes school, this money would be available for his university study if he chooses to go to university. It will be his at the age of 18 & he can do whatever he wants with it.

Hi hun, my DS was not ready before he was 6.5-7 months. He hated all weaning food like veggies & fruit puree. I started to offer him tastes from what we'r eating fork mashed at 1st & he started to like solids. He was on 2-3 solids with 3 milk feeds at around 8 months. At this age, her milk has more calories than solids. He's 14 months now, & until now he doesnt eat much. Some babies are not big eaters.

You should add formula to water at the temperature of 70 oC to kill the bacteria (boil water & leave it to settle for 10 mins) 1 oz of water is enough to sterilize the whole amount of formula, then you can top up with cold water directly from the water bottle. It's not adviseable to add boiling watet to formula without leaving it to cool down a bit as it kills the nutrients in formula

Emirates Labour supply in Al Fardan Centre is a good agency. I got my current maid through them, she's been with us for almost 2 years now, & the best I've ever had. I'd also suggest getting someone fresh with no local experience. I had my share of locally hired maids & they all were a pain, lots of expectations, lies, stealing, etc.

I'm not sure I agree WA - formula is not sterile and should therefore only be made with near boiling water in order to kill any bacteria present. So you are saying we need to use hot water to make the formula and than let it cool down? I thought we had to boil the water, let it cool down and than make the formula. confused now!:\: Yasmin, you only need to boil 1 oz (30 mls) of water if you'r using bottled water, add it after 5-10 mins to the bottle, all the amount of formula needed for the feed, stir with a sppon or shake, then top up with the remaining amount of water directly from the water bottle. If you'r preparing 150 ml bottle for example, add 30 mls of hot water to the feeding bottle, 5 scoops of formula, stir/shake (to sterilise the formula) then top up with the remaining 120 mls of water directy from the bottle of water.

Slightly off topic, but when do you stop boiling the water they use just for drinking? In Europe it was 6 months, but we used tap water which I would not here. If you are using bottled water for drinking, you dont need to boil it even before 6 months.

Thanks for all your replies ladies! We are also using Arwa for our son, when he's just NB upto now that he's 6 months. Arwa has the lowest sodium content. Masafi has a large amount of sodium. I never thought that Arwa has a large fluoride cOntent, but do we need to worry about this? What's the effect? We also boiled the water first with the formula & cool it before giving him. Masafi has 10 mg/ltr. Babies usually drink around 500 mls of water in formula, which is 5 mg of soldium. Babies are allowed 1 grm of salt before the age of 1 so 5 mg in 24 hrs is almost nothing. Arwa has lower around 3.5 mg/ltr. But all those amounts dont really count. As for fluoride, they'r not suppose to have it before the age of 1 year. Boiling meneral water will increase the concentrate of menerals. As I mentioned earlier, you can boil 1 oz of water, add the whole amount of fomula to the hot water, then top up with room temp water directly from the bottle. Babies exposed to fluoride are at high risk of developing dental fluorosis - a permanent tooth defect caused by fluoride damaging the cells which form the teeth edited by wickedangel_78 on 15/01/2011

Evian for any formular that I give him. It does get expensive but it is one of the only options on the market that does NOT contain fluoride (actually there is very small amount but less than the others). Wickedangel, I always thought that Masafi was quite high in sodium. Arwa is much better (but contains fluoride if you don't mind that) Masafi doesnt have flouride & it only have 10mg /ltr of sodium.

Hi dollymud, Arwa & masafi have the least sodium in them (I compared all available bottles here). As for using bottled water to prepare formula, you can boil 1 oz of water leave it to cool for 15 mins add it to the bottle, then add all the amount of formula to it to sterilize it (formula is not sterile), then add the remaining amount of water. Boiling the whole amount of water will increases the concentrate of minerals.

hi hun, we swiched to Aptamil follow on at 7.5 months, but it didnt make his poo harder. It was similar. DS poo is also a bit runny, & now he's on Milupa toddlers milk +cow milk (he's 14 months). If your LO is teething, it's normal for his poo to be a bit runny. DS still poos 2-4 times a day. He's always teething (had his 1st teeth 1 week after his 1st birthday & until now he doesnt have more).

Hi hun, big hugs. My DS is 14 months. We went through this phase at 8.5 months & it lasted for a month. There is a growth spurt at this age & it's very developmental, this is why your LO would get frustrated all day. - Food: DS still goes through phases of not eating or drinking his milk. When he's teething he goes off solids & milk feeds. I never had a big eater or drinker. He likes plain yoghurt & cheese sticks, so I stick to those when he refuses to eat. I give him food to play with & I use my hands to feed him instead of a spoon. If he sees a spoon & plate he goes crazy. He likes to eat from my hand. If he starts closing his mouth, I stop offering him food. Until now he doesnt eat more than 1-2 meals with 2-3 milk feeds. If you can maintain 15-18 oz of formula it would be great. Try to give him his milk feeds with no distractions in a dark room when he's tired & ready for a nap & see how it goes. DS will not take a milk feed if there is distractions. If you hold him to feed, try to put him on a pillow on your bed, & see how it goes. If you'r still using stage 1 formula, you can try switching to stage 2. - Car seat: I used to sit in the back seat & talk & sing to DS until he got used to sitting there. Once we switched to forward facing at 10 months when he outgrew his infant carseat he started to like his carseat, we also have a CD with some songs he likes & now he sings & clap his hands. - Night feeds: As he's not eating well, it's normal for him to keep waking up during the day & with his feeding habits, I think you weaned him too early off his dummy - Dressing & undressing: It's sooo normal. I use pull ups as it's easier to change while standing up. DS still have melt downs & tantrums when I try to change his clothes. Now he's older, I encourage him to help me & he started to like it more.

Hi hun, he doesnt need more than few sips of water with his solids at 6 months if he's taking enough BM/formula. My DS was taking few sips at your LO's age, at 9 months he went up to 3 oz & now at 14 months he drinks around 240 mls (8 oz), & sometimes more. Once he's more mobile & start moving around he will start taking more. Just keep offering until he gets used to it.

Teething can start at anytime hun, some babies are born with teeth. Teething signs doesnt mean having teeth anytime soon. DS started teething between 3-4 months but he had his 1st teeth 1 week after his 1st birthday. You can try sudocream or bepanthen (sp?) for the rash. You can also mix Aptamil 1 with Aptamil comfort (50-50) or you can use gripe water or infacol for his colic & switch back to Aptamil 1 if it suited him more than the comfort formula. DS was on Aptamil AR since he was 6 weeks, & he started to have some explosive poos & redness in his bum at around 3 months, & it was simply teething signs. We used saducream to prevent nappy rash. No nappy time also helps. Which nappies are you using? Pampers premium is purely cotton & it helps to ease the rash pain & inflamation. Hope your Lo gets better soon hun. xx

Hi - I've been mixing expressed milk with Aptamil for a couple of weeks now since I had a serious shortage at one point and it was stressing me out. It's been going quite well but the last couple of days we switched to Apt Comfort as our doctor thought the little chap might have a bit of colic. His stools are still yellow but are almost like paint and so he's soiled through his onesie two days in a row. I'm not worried about that so much as was wondering: is this considered diarrhea? I'm not overly worried at this stage since it's been once a day and does not smell bad. Sorry to give so much info - just looking for a bit of advice! Also he's got a rash around his back and I think it's where the nappy rubs at the back - has anyone else experienced this? Thank you and good luck to the other newbies! Sounds like signs of teething hun, the rash & explosive poos.
