Qamardeen is better in every way! It`s in the downtown and you can walk to Dubai Fountain to watch the show and fireworks, thousands of people will be in that area. Many will be stuck in traffic for 5 hours and won`t make it (like last year). But you won`t have to drive, all ''the happening'' places are in a walking distance from your hotel! Souk Al Bahar is right there with plenty of nice restaurants with outdoor terrace and NYE program. Must be booked in advance-better now. Some of the best hotels will be in your area too and you can spent NYE there if you like. The Palace, The Adress, BK...all are fancy and atmospheric. Rose Rayhaan will be boring! Traffic on Shkh.Zayed Rd. will be solid and you won`t be able to get out of the hotel if you get bored. HTH Didn`t notice you mentioned Al Manzil, it shares the same prime location with Qamardeen and the Palace, so i would also recommend it. edited by Wild Mint on 25/10/2011

Such a great post, Singapore Sling! Makes me want to live in KL and makes me feel bad about being ripped off in Dubai! I have a Swedish friend who moved to KL from Dubai 3 years ago, he absolutely loves living there, new beautiful house in a posh area, cheap outings, lots of new friends... It took him less time to settle down in KL than in Dubai.

is this good for blistered feet as well? It definitely is how do we use it? TFYH edited by IAMVP on 21/10/2011 Just do epsom salt foot soak. Add half a cup of epsom salt to a small tub of warm water, soak your feet for 30 min. or as long as it feels right. Epsom salts are great for homemade detox baths!

As MsClegg said, you need to apply at the consulate which is in Trade Centre, it costs approx.200 DHS and might take a few days to process but it`s really easy. Btw, Turkish Consulate website is very informative, check it out: http://dubai.cg.mfa.gov.tr/

Organic F&C makes the healthiest, nutritious and very tasty bread. Thay have 25% off today, the place was packed! Waitrose is pretty good too, variety is better but it isn`t as healthy. edited by Wild Mint on 15/10/2011

Both Fly Dubai and Turkish airlines fly direct from Dubai to Istandul. Fly Dubai IS cheaper but you will arrive at Sabiha Gokcen airport which is on the Asian side, located approx.40 kms from the central Istanbul. Be prepared to pay more for a cab ride to the city. If you fly with Turkish Air you will arrive to the main Ataturk airport which is the biggest and more centrally located. Check the rates directly with FlyDubai, it`s usually cheap and the booking is easy.

best place to stay i think is the Tintagel, ex presidents house, owned by the Paradise Road people (and that is a store definitely worth visiting!!) great restaurant as well. they also have a property in bentota, the Villa Bentota. its a fair drive there though, ie 3-4 hrs, although by the time you are going the new highway *should* be open. there is always the air taxi which is 15 mins. enjoy!! I`s beautiful and almost fully booked! Thank you :)

I do not remember the name of the government taxi company, but it has office at the airport. It is safer that way and you won't get cheated. If you go by car from Kandy to the South check small town with R to see how the locals grab straight from the river precious stones that in Europe cost 30 times more. We`ll do that. Also, thanks tons for taking the time to explain things:)

In Colombo there are 4 stores that sale Noritake. I prefer bone china, but do your homework and check the designs online. On the South, the name of the place was something like Bentota, 150 km from Colombo approx. Tea plantations are also interesting - Nuwarala Ellia is the most interesting one. If I am to visit now, I will take car with driver, go from Colombo to the elephant orphanage, than to Kandy and after on the South. From Bentota back to Colombo. Check also Galle. The history museum is very good in Colombo too. Bentota looks very pretty, hotels seems to be reasonably priced too, will do more research on this one. Tea plantations are on my to-do list. Thank you loads for all the info! So if we are to take a car with driver to:Colombo-Kandy-Bentota it has to be arranged by the hotel/agent? Can`t we just negotiate and go with any airport taxi?

Three things you can buy in SriLanka: sapphires, Noritake porcelain and Ceilon tea. Hilton is a good hotel. Kandy is boring - there is only one tample and the Noritake factory. Train in SriLanka is a BIG NO No, but you can hire car wit driver for a day. The hotel's concierge will sort you out with a government operator. Costs approx $80 a day. I would recommend the South part - great beach, tortouses , elephant safaris. Pinnawala is worth visiting also on the way to Kandy. Interesting, will definitely look for porcelain. Thank you for the train tip. At which town/beach to book the hotel?

Why not travel up to Kandy, spend a couple of nights and a day there before heading back to Colombo? I did it years ago and went by train to Kandy. Googled it. It`s 2-2.5 hours by car from Colombo which is OK, how many hours by train? Where did you stay?

Just thought of something-it doesn`t have to be Colombo, if there are other places/towns which are better for tourists and just a short (2-3 hours max) drive from Colombo a/port - we would rather go there. It`s a small island after all.

Myself and DH will be returning from Bangkok with stop over in Colombo in the end of January. We would like to use this opportunity and stay in Colombo for 3 nights before flying back to Dubai. Now, i can`t seem to find a decent hotel! I did search Trip Advisor and booking.com but the results are few and most hotels (apart from 5* chains which are also very few) look shabby and unreliable. Can someone recommend a hotel and maybe itinerary for a short stay please? Tickets are already bought and Colombo was my idea, but i`m stuck:( I would be grateful for any information...

Beachcombers has the most beautiful location in town. Wooden cabanas on the beach right next to the Burj, has both air-conditioned indoor and an outdoor terrace. If you go there, book window table or on the terrace-fantastic view! Very high quality food, great service, kids buffet with ice-cream machine and choc.fountain:) I can`t wait to go there again! Saffron at Atlantis does Far-Eastern, Asian, seafood buffed which starts at 7 pm on Saturday. Gigantic buffet, everything tastes amazing, lots of choices for kids too.

My latest find and my favorite-Capre Diem (Town Centre, Jumeirah), cozy sofas, coffee served in a cute vintage cups and great freshly made waffles and crepes. Weird location though. It`s privately owned by Belgian family, i like that, chains are so uninspiring. Lime Tree for coffee and small baked treats and an occasional salad.

We have seen dinner buffet but didn`t eat there. Cold cuts, cheese board and desserts looked nice. I wasn`t impressed with mains which were presented in the oven pots and looked like the stew of different kinds. Reminded me of European hearty, heavy winter foods. Limited variety of the mains, lack of seafood/fish, veggie options-we went next door to The Talk instead.

Yes thanks for the miso info....have been meaning to do a grilled fish that need miso and something called miren in the marinade....will chk out the organic store and see.. Mirin is a Japanese sweet cooking wine. You won`t find the real one in the local supermarkets because it contains alcohol. But Waitrose sells a non-alcoholic version in the Japanese food section. Beware that non-alcoholic mirin is often full of MSG, sweetners and chemicals. I normally use sweet sherry or even apple juice instead, or just add a bit of sugar to the recipe to compensate for the sweetness. You can often find Japanese foods in Korean supermarkets (1004 Mart in Barsha) since miso, soy, [b'>mirin [/b'>(or very similar to it)....are used in Korean cooking as well. It`s also cheaper than Organic F&C. Happy cooking:)

Dubai has hundreds of Indian restaurants but none of them (according to EW`ers) knows now how to make a ''real'' curry?? What a load of cobblers The gap between Indian-Turry and Brit-turry has closed massively, since them days when some UK based Indian chef threw a can of tomato soup on some grilled chicken tikka in the 1950s and called it Tikka Masala What's your point? edited by Wild Mint on 07/10/2011

I buy miso paste at Organic F&C in Dubai Mall or TECOM. They have 3-4 different types of it, it`s natural, unpasteurised kind, which is very good for you...I love barley Mugi Miso paste it`s mild yet full of flavour and very versatile. 1004 Mart in Barsha has a cheaper option of Korean miso, which is pretty tasty but a bit more processed. Hope this helps:)

I have the same problem, as my DH is a meat eater and my choices are limited when it comes to brunches/buffets. I do loosen up a bit on special occasions, especially if it involves alcohol which hits me real hard if i don`t get enough protein. Then i would usually eat some fish or cheese, I figure it's better than feeling sick later... Saffron in Atlantis has OK variety, Thai salads station is really nice, as opposed to buffet in Kaleidoscope which had almost no food for a veggie apart from the deserts...
