I used to be very interested, but since i failed to find any kind of decent consultancy i resorted to reading all the books available on this topic in Kinokuniya (library in dub.mall). It`s very interesting, i think i should pick it up again. Personal experience: even the supposed to be professionals like hairdressers, fashion stores staff, have zero clue on which shade is cool or warm, let alone the skin color seasons!

Where is Raffles, please, Mrs Mopp? My ma is being so bleaaagh about being here that I fear the Burj Al Arab afternoon tea will be wasted on her, so I might as well take her somewhere cheaper. Kempinski @ MOE maybe? It`s only 80 per person, unlimited tea/coffe, choc.fontain, decent canapes, pretty looking cakes, and scones with clotted cream, yum!!

Rye if i remember correctly has gluten too, just as wheat, barley, oats - i usually try not to eat these regularly. Basically, i know that all of the bakery produce is not good for me:( Rice is OK, wild rice and buckwheat (great for pancakes), quinoa, amaranth...quite boring really. I think that celiac disease is pretty common these days but a lot of people don`t realise what`s the problem and what triggers it.

Thai Kitchen at the Park Hyatt does a really nice one if you like Asian food. it's also Al la carte. I think it was 250dhs with wine and beer (tiger and another asian beer) and maybe spirits but you'd have to check. Oh yes, they used to have beauuuutiful seafood selection and a very, very lovely thai food:) Way better than Wafi`s ThaiChi... I just wish they were still using the outdoor terrace though.

Me and DH did. You can buy the book from them with all kinds of tests to practice, the book comes with the CD, which is an imitation of an actual test and you need to time yourself to do the whole test. It will give you a good idea of what kind of score you can expect on the real test.

I was looking into Dukan diet a few weeks ago (after reading about it here) and then continued reading up on Atkins and South Beach. What I didn't like about Dukan (in the attack phase) and Atkins was that you are not allowed to eat vegetables and generally only eat meat and eggs. At least this is how I understood it. And I couldn't see myself gnawing on a steak for breakfast. I don`t eat meat, so normally i would have eggs, or wasa crackers with some spread, or open a can of tuna for a quick salad, sometimes just a piece of cheese and cucumbers. I thought the diet was quite varied for my taste. And yes, i do believe that the secret to a successful diet, or rather eating plan is to have it customised and altered according to a persons food preferences, likes/dislikes, lifestyle etc... Combining the info from different diets will make you more knowledgeable and will give you more room to play around. I thought the Paleo diet was very interesting indeed. I was surprised to see the difference so soon too, it was very encouraging and it made me stick to the plan.

I don`t even know where to start.... I used Atkins, SB and Carbohydrate Addict`s (check this one out when you get tired of Atkins!!!) diet books as a general guideline and then picked and customized most suitable schemes for myself. I can say that i learned a great deal about food & nutrition in general from this books and other low-carb resources, mostly from Atkins. Despite the fact that I haven`t completed the iduction stage and didn`t alway played by the rules, had week-end treats (sweet thooth:)), i still managed to 'shape up' from UK size 12 to 8 in about 8 months. I wasn`t in a rush-they say the longer it takes you to loose weight, the longer you will keep it. There are dosens of low-carb diets on the internet and great foodie forums with recipes (even desserts)of all kinds so you don`t feel deprived of anything and won`t run out of ideas what to eat, since your options will be limited especially in the beginning. Locating food outside will be even more difficult, since everything is loaded either with starch, sugar, rice, bread, or fries, or sweetened salad dressings, which you, or anyone else for that matter shouldn`t be eating anyway. The thruth is, the only time you can get your good quality protein-loaded meal is if you cook it yourself. If you like fish, meats (not a meat eater myself but i adore seafood), eggs, cheese, veggies, nuts &seeds, cream, olives, tofu, peanut butter, tahini - you will be very happy and won`t even feel that you are on a 'diet'! :) I would strongly suggest eating more fish & soy products, rather than having rib-eye or lamb chops every day, just to keep your cholesterol levels in check. Me & DH did our blood tests recently and the results have never been better. He was very sceptical at first, but couple of month down the road and me - 10 kg lighter converted him as well and now our diets are pretty much the same. Important: It is a whole lifestyle, not a diet, and if you can`t picture yourself still living low-carb 1, or 2, or 5 years from now, you would be better off choosing more suitable/another eating plan. I have been maintaining my weight for 2 years, but if i eat pastas, baked stuff or sweets for a couple of days in a row, i can see my waist getting rounder pretty fast. I am a big advocate of Atkins books - great ideas which changed my life, simple enough to follow and pretty easy to maintain on the long run. Good Luck! :)

Juan Salon 04 4389570 They did pretty bad blone highlights (or rather chick-yellow), which i had to re-do later in another hair salon. But then, Juan himself only did the cut (nothing great either) and another stylist did the color. Overall-waste of DHS650. But still, most people seems to be really happy with his work. So maybe you really should book with Juan himself and no one else, if you decide to go there. Good luck:)

Atkins Advantage bars are available in most sup.markets these days, choice is limited to 4-5 different bars, Carrefour, Geant, Maya(not sure anymore), variety in Waitrose is even smaller. If you want crackers, pastas, baking mixes, etc... you will often find them in Nutrition Centre and the like. The one in Dubai Mall (on the way to Waitrose sup.) has the biggest variety in my opinion. Hope this helps:)

We went to Salamar for drinks last night, the place is close to the beach and the area is rather pretty, with peacocks walking right near you:) Btw, ladies get 3 free bubbles on Fridays. They had a poster for Friday Brunch, it was 199/pp excluding the booze. Additional 100 with the alcohol.

Dome is nice too, just completely different setting, it`s a coffe shop. It`s rather down below, right on the walk next to Trader Vic`s, italian resto and whole bunch of other places, next to the water-canal where traditional abras and plenty of people walking-by, really, really lovely on the weekends. It isn`t the best location if you want to take pictures, though. More elevated venues like Bahri, Agency at night will have fantastic views.

Muffin from Starbucks? That`s probably the worst food to have for breakfast, jesus...Your organism starved the whole night to have the muffin thrown in! Nutritional value=zero. Have a couple of Wasa crackers for fiber and vit.B, crumble on top some feta (or labne) for protein, calcium, vit.D etc., add thinly sliced tomatoes for fiber vit.A+vit.C, sprinkle with mixed-herb or fresh mint and few drops of extra-virgin olive oil for omega 3 and 6+vit.E for your skin. ****** delicious! Even my fast-food fan husband loves these. It will take you 5 minutes, i bet you waste more time going picking up those muffins! You should never skip breakfast, as it kick starts your digestive system for the day and gives your brain the energy.

I also should add that laying off the refined carbs....white bread, white sugar, white flour, past, rice...give those up or cut back for 2 weeks and watch that tummy shriiink!! It must be the white bread (for toast) and the pasta, so if I switch to brown, will it really make much difference? No, not that easy. It`s a common mistake to confuse brown bread with the whole grain varieties. Most of the locally-produced so called 'brown' breads have simple colorant (like caramel) added to them. It`s just an attempt to follow the general eating-healthy trend, but exact same thing really. Look for WHOLE-GRAIN breads and pastas, which are available in most supermarkets these days, and DO read the labels:) Fiber is great for you, it also fills you up without adding extra calories, will improve your digestive system in just a couple of days

IMO, everything 'authentic' and not a rip off is in the 'old Dubai' areas. I have been living here for 10 years but just now discovered Rigga, Muraqqabad in Deira, we finally ate in Sharja for the first time and the food in traditional syrian place was amasing, probably the best arabic food we ever had! Almost forgot, bill for 2 was 70Dhs., we can`t even tell our friends that we check out cheap places like this one, people are too pretentious in Dubai. Get out of Marina, drive down to the old dubai, keep an open mind and you will be spoiled with choice. It kills me when people say that good food can`t be cheap(i.e. price tag for a cup of tea is Dhs20), if you are curious and not too stuck-up to try new things you will change your mind. edited by Fondue on 21/06/2011
