Hi, We move to Dubai in a few weeks and wanted to know is it best to sponsor a live in maid or hire through an agency? What are the costs that I will lose in case sponsorship does not work out?

Hi, Young one going to DESS and we would be DIFC and Deira. Which areas should we target living at? My preference is a 3bed apartment with gym pool court etc. Is school bus better or better to drop off? Do you mean your little one has a place at DESS? and you are deciding on living close to the DIFC or Deira? If so there is a huge different between apartments at the DIFC and in Deira How much is your housing budget? I believe the bus fees can be expensive and the quality of some of the drivers driving is a bit suspect. if you can drive and are able to drop them I would go down that route Hi, Sorry about the vague text. The young one has admission to DESS, Hubby works at DIFC and I am hoping that I get a job at Deira. There is also a younger one who needs to go to pre-school (play school?) but we haven't figured that out yet. No housing allowance from the company. We are on a cash package. Personally, the lower the rent the better, but we need a 3 bed, and I doubt we'll get anything half decent below 180K from the property listings. Given the number of ins and outs of the house, and your feedback on the bus drivers, i am now thinking i need to hire a driver to make the timings work out. :-( All advice welcome.

Isnt there a rule that says school fees can be raised only once in 3 years with the approval of KHDA?

Welcome to Bahrain. Its a lovely place, and Budaiya a a wonderful multicultural environment. If you would like to meet new people and play a bit of tennis - might be useful to join a social club (dilmun, rugby or country close to you). Alternatively, you would soon meet tons of friendly people through your childrens schools or zumba classes and the like. Enjoy!

Hi, Our young one is applying to start Y1 in Sep as well, and the school said that if the reference from the current school was good enough, they would not be calling us for an assessment. Dont know if this is the case for all schools. For us, this was a godsend as flying to Dubai (We are not there yet) just for one assessment would be very expensive on top of the already astronomical school fees (dont get me started). Good luck with your assessment.

Check out the FAB Bahrain page for play groups that you can join with bub. It will help you meet people. Additionally check out the Mums in Bahrain facebook page where you can connect with likeminded people.

ISB is definitely cheaper. Academically - both have good reviews from people. There is also Bhavans which has recently opened up which has good reviews in the primary grades. I guess it also depends where you live. NMS is in the centre of the city, but ISB is a little away.
