Pergolas at Al Murooj Rotana, especially at this time of the year when you can sit outside. It's about 200 Dhs including alcohol.

I had Jumeirah Carpentry make a coffee table and a small outside table for me earlier this year and was very happy with both.

I used Joseph who was recommended on here (if you do a search his contact details should come up). He was very professional, turned up on time with a huge selection of fabric samples and designs. He gave a quote the same evening and within one week he was back and had all the villa fitted with new curtains. We were very happy with the price and service.

yes we got the letter too and use dreams flwers, dont really know what is going on or why they have been banned, they always do a good job with us. am going to try and get to the bottom of it.... Please post if you find anything out. We only signed the new contract 2 days before receiving the letter so I don't think they knew about the ban? I will get in touch with the guy from Dream Flowers and let him know but if the ban is enforced I guess we will just pay for 1 month and then have to get someone else.

We got letter in Al Mahra and friends got it in palmera 3, so seems like all AR did. Seemed self explanatory although who knows their 'evidence' or reasoning. It does say they have gone against the rules and regulations of the community and UAE laws but doesn't say what exactly. It also mentioned that residents have complained but most of the companies listed have been recommended on here quite a few times, which is why I wondered if anyone knew anything specific. They were really professional when they came to give the quote and they sent 3 gardeners who all worked very hard so I am disappointed that I have to find someone else.

Dream Flowers came and did our garden last week and made a fantastic job, but then I came home from work today and found a newsletter on the door from Emaar advising from the 13th December some gardening companies will no longer be able to enter and work in the Ranches.......Dream Flowers is one of them! Did anyone else get this newsletter, and do you know why they are banned? Looks like I will need to find another company again :(

I recently bought a Marc Jacobs bag for approximately 1000dhs, although I think it was reduced by 300 dhs or so but it is a really good quality bag and I would definitely look at this brand if I was to purchase another expensive bag.

If you do decide to go for an apartment rather than a villa then take a look at the Greens. I stayed there for 4 years and loved it. It's not high-rise, maybe 6 or 7 floors and the area is well developed with greenery and lakes which would be nice for walks in the cooler months. There is also a supermarket, pharmacy, coffee shops and restaurants in walking distance. The roads have also got better in this area and access to SZR would be okay for your husband. Good look with your move :) I now live in Arabian Ranches and I also love this area too, but it will all depend on your budget as to where you should be looking. edited by Yorky on 08/11/2011

I love the idea of ordering in a turkey and having the leftovers! But there are only two of us so there would be so much waste (just waiting for all the domestic godesses out there to contradict me! Lol) We just enjoy going out and not having to cook, sad to some I know(btw, I love to cook but also enjoy going out for food)

Verre is re-opening - surely they won't miss out on christmas before opening..... Yes Verre is reopening, with the same chef, I think it will be called Table 9? I will make some inquiries but just getting worried about not having anything booked yet! We have done the buffets before but prefer when it's just the two of us to have a served meal and really stuggle to find many places offering this.

Also interested in those Resorts that have an ALL inclusive deal - ie meals and drinks (of the alcoholic kind!) :o) Lily Beach in the Maldives is all inclusive and fantastic. We went in August and plan to go back next April. Can't comment on the kids club though.

I love the idea of cucumber sandwiches, especially with the crusts cust off! But if you want a sweet dish I would go with the scones, very easy to make and very British! You could put chopped dates in instead of sultanas and supply proper butter, jam and cream to go with them, yumyum! butter and cream? I don't get the butter and cream thing, for me it's one or the other and when we are talking scones it has to be strawberry jam and clotted cream x

Tripe!? Thats the second dish that you have suggested that I don't know! If it should be trifle, that's a good idea but I always follow my Grandma's recipe and that involves a drop of sherry so probably not appropriate for work, but then again.........

shortbread ?? (or too Scottish... lol) individual apple pies and cheat with Ambrosia custard !! or individual rice puddings (can be eaten cold)... and a cuppa !! edited by Sue62 on 30/10/2011 We only have to take one dish, I guess the idea is everyone will just try a bit but I would love to take a box of Yorkshire Tea and make everyone a brew! Not sure the boss would appreciate that effort though.

Why don't you pay to use one of the beach clubs at a nice hotel for the day. There will be enough of you to take it in turns to watch the kids so you can relax a little and you could stay for an early dinner so you don't need to cook when you get home (I assume you would not want to be out late with the kids being so small)

Just go to the Al Barsha ID Center, they have a typing department there. When I did my renewal I did not need to go to the typing department they just processed a new ID card, all within 10 minutes but there wasn't a queue. That was on a weekday about 2.30pm but that was before they announced the latest deadlines so it might be busier now?

I came out of Jebel Ali at 4.30pm and all six lanes heading towards Dubai were grid locked. At that time I think there had been 2 accidents but possibly more happened after this. It really reminded me of the horrendous traffic four or five years ago when Dubai was 'busy' and a 20 minute car journey would take 2 hours!

We love Jebel Ali Hotel for a weekend away and the rooms in Palm Tree Court are lovely. They have also just refurbished the main hotel rooms and friends said they are nice too. I inquired for rates over Eid and they were 2700 Dhs per night! I think the prices have gone up compared to last year but maybe I am wrong? They also told me the main hotel was fully booked but I managed to book a room on Agoda.com. They also do some good all inclusive deals and all the restaurants are in the entertainer books.

We went in August and Agoda.com came up with the best prices but I tried the travel agents in Arabian Ranches before booking and they got me the same deal cheaper. I would also try searching prices on Trip Advisor and also checking directly with the resort to compare before booking.

We used Tip Top Painters earlier this year and we were very impressed with them. They would charge approx 4000Dhs for a 2E, but will come and view the villa and ask which paints you want before quoting anything.

Have you tried 050 4548140? The company closes on the 13th October and Kirsty will be opening up a new cleaning business so she might have changed the phone numbers? I have a letter with a contact number on at home that I could check later if this number doesnt work.

Not everyone in Dubai is 'glam', so do not feel like you need to fit in with something you are not comfortable with. The early days are hard because you will meet people that do the pleasantries but then the conversation goes nowhere but hold in there you might find some equally minded people and strike a friendship. Give it time and hopefully you will feel more comfortable in your new surroundings, good luck x

Hi, Do you always get the same maid come out to you if you use an agency? That is usually how it works when you agree on a weekly contract with them. I use Bridge Cleaners and they asked what cleaning I wanted doing and sent someone, then called later that day to see if I was happy and if I wanted the same person every week. That works well for me because I am not at home when they come so I prefer the same person who knows what I need doing and where everything is. If she is on holiday they always call or text me before to let me know someone else will cover.
