For me it was probably about six months. The stress of moving to a different country, new job, finding somewhere to live and all the other things that come with it does take it's toll, especially if you are missing friends and family too. Just take one day at a time and think of things you do like about being here. I'm not sure exactly what changed for me, I guess I decided to start having a more positive attitude and give it a try and somewhere along that journey I realized I had become more settled, and now I wouldn't want to be anywhere else!

The Wharf at Mina Al Salam do a good roast dinner on Saturdays and Sundays from 7pm. There is usually 2 or 3 meats available and it cost 90 Dhs, but you can use the entertainer vouchers so works out reasonable plus they have drinks promotions. I have also heard the Underground at Habtoor Grand has a new English chef that does a roast dinner, can't remember what day though. If you want a roast dinner on a Friday I can recommend the yorkshire puddings and roast chicken at Al Qasr brunch!

I think they have them in the big supermarkets, Geant, Carrefour or Lulus. Sorry I can't remember which one but I am sure I have seen them in one of these.

I used to have a cleaner once a week and send out the ironing but when we moved to a bigger house I increased the cleaning to include every other Saturday too. We now find she does most of the ironing during that time too so it works well for us. We do sometimes use an outside company especially when we have been away and the ironing pile is huge! Most companies will ask you what you want doing so you can include the ironing if you want.

Since we moved here we have spent every Christmas in Dubai and so far we have done, Nad Al Sheba, Beachcombers, Al Qasr, Rhodes Mezzanine and Verre. The last three were probably my favorites and I would do any of them again but I have heard Al Qasr is already fully booked, last year Rhodes Mezzanine doubled in price and Verre always seems far away so I have no idea where we will go. One thing is for sure, I will not be staying at home and cooking!

Pregos in Media Rotana and Dante in Grand Millenium are really good, just don't know if they do the Calves liver, as it's something I never order. Another vote here for these two restaurants

Lakeland do some nice spice jars but not sure about the price. If you need quite a few try Ikea if you don't want to spend too much.

Most of the places in Motor City will deliver to the Ranches without any problem. There is also NKD Pizza (Studio City?), which are really nice. if we want an Indian we still order from our favorite, Copper Chimney in the Springs and it's usually still hot when it arrives.

PF Changs is one of the few places that I have enjoyed Chinese food in Dubai. We have only used MCC so cannot compare to the other branch in MOE

We have stayed in the Al Khaimah villas and thought they were stunning. At first we thought it was going to be really busy because there were a lot of people checking in when we arrived but once we got to our villa it was very quiet. There were people in the villas close to us but we never heard them. For the first night we had the buffet in the main restaurant and I thought it was overpriced for what was on offer. The second night we tried Saffron, the Thai restaurant and thought the food was much better. Room service was excellent and a good selection of food and beverage was on offer. I would definitely go back again. There are summer promotions running at the moment and vouchers for the restaurants and the spa in the entertainer books.

I agree, you may find UAE prices not that competitive. I have an IPad but it was a present so no idea how much it cost (purchased in the UAE) but generally we have found very little diffence in prices for electrical goods.

I am sure you will get some good advice on this thread but also use the search function for living costs and start to build up a plan of how much you would need to live comfortably each month. I don't have kids so cannot comment on school fees (again lots of recent threads if you search) but I would take a look at Dubizzle for rent prices in areas where you would like to live. Price vary on location and apartments and villas, so it will depend what you are looking for. If you think you will also depend on your income I would also do some research on that before making a decision. There are some good work opportunities in Dubai but there also a lot of people willing to work for less than you might expect in your home country so it might not work out as financially rewarding after taking child care, transport etc into consideration.

You can easily buy sim cards in all of the shopping malls so don't worry about getting one at the airport. You will need to provide a copy of your passport to get one though ( or maybe they take other forms of ID but I remember using my passport) I have also found Etisalat has the best coverage and I am sure there is very little difference (if any) in the cost of either provider.

I would say if you can get a villa in AR in your budget and your kids will go to school there then that would be my first choice. AR is such a lovely community, well established and has the shopping center and golf club. I am sure Layan is nice but it will not be as established as AR and I think you would be looking at an apartment in Motor City for you budget (?)

Like you say it's probably best to drive round and get a feel of the place, but we love it in Alma. It a great location for the shopping center and the golf club too.

I have never stayed in the hotel but dined there a few times and the restaurants are really nice. Some of the restaurants are quite expensive, we usually go for special occasions but maybe you will get discounts if you are staying a while? it's a great location for other restaurants and nightlife in the Marina / JBR area. I am sure you will not be disappointed, enjoy :)

Depending on where you are located in Dubai I would recommend the Madinat if it is his first time in Dubai. Such a lovely setting and a great choice of restaurants and bars.

It will also depend how many people will live in the villa and if you are home all day. There are two of us but both out at work all day. We haven't done a full year in this villa yet but I would estimate we average approximate 1000 dhs per month (3 bed, plus maids and study). We also water the garden twice a day.
