Thanks Yorky, That seems very reasonable. Would such guys charge a lot more for more fancy colors and not only off-white? Apart from gold and silver of course :-) Thinking of some warmer tones like off yellow, soft green,... And are they also good for outside painting? I presume that would cost a bit more... I'm not sure but it wouldn't cost anything for them to come and give you a quote. They were very helpful.

I have got a 3 bed villa, plus study and maids room and it cost 4400 Dhs. I am sure others could recommend cheaper options but I was happy with the price and the quality of the work.

If you can manage without a driver I would just hire a car. It would work out cheaper and would be more flexible. You should get some good rates now that it's summer. I think Hertz have some offers available.

Banyan Tree have a Summer Escape Offer running which is buy one night get second night free. I think this is only valid on weekdays though. If you want to go at the weekend it might be worth buying the travel entertainer book for the buy one get one free voucher which can be used anytime. Enjoy, it's a wonderful place :)

How long does it take to cook a kilo of chips? Is clean up easy? How much are they? Information from the user guide: Minimum quantity 300g Maximum quantity 800g Home made chips 12 to 18 minutes Home made wedges 18 to 22 minutes Thin frozen fries 9 to 16 minutes Thick frozen fries 11 to 20 minutes Other items which can be cooked in it are meat and poultry, snacks (spring rolls, frozen fish fingers, chicken nuggets). They also give recipes for cakes, muffins and quiches. It's very easy to clean because there is a removable basket. I can't remember the price but I think it was about 1000 Dhs Thick frozen fries 11 to 20 minutes edited by Yorky on 15/07/2011 edited by Yorky on 15/07/2011

No I haven't used the Tefal one but when I bought the air fryer from Sharaf DG they had both so I checked what the difference was. Previously to make healthier chips I would par boil some potatoes then spray with fry light and bake in the oven. They were nice but took quite a while to cook but with the air fryer there is no need to par boil so I just spray with fry lite and 20 minutes later they are cooked to perfection.

Yes, well worth the money in my opinion. Just made some chips in mine and they were lovely :) seriously just a teaspoon of oil?? Wondering which is better this one or that tefal actifry? You use a teaspoon of oil in the Tefal one but with the air fryer you can just spray the chips with fry lite so you probably use less oil. If you use frozen chips you don't have to use any oil, just put them straight in. You can use it to cook quite a few different things and they give you a cook book with ideas in.

...The combined ID card and e-gate is not available yet. I had my e-gate renewed on my ID card over 12 months ago. At the time it was 60dhs (I think!) cheaper than getting a new e-gate card. I renewed my ID card one month ago and they said this was not valid yet. Have you used your ID card through e-gate successfully?

Just wanted to share my experience. I went to dnata on sheikh zayed road this morning to get my egate card. there were 2 people in line. Got to me within 5 minutes. I gave the lady my passport and she gave me a paper for payment. I went to the cashier seated in the same room as them and paid AED 220. Afterwards, I went back to her and got my passport and the egate card back. Took less than 15 minutes! I'm stunned! :) Bye, bye, waiting in long queues at the airport :) Is that a NEW (seperate) e-gate card or did you just put the e-gate access as an option on your emirates ID card; heard its a lil cheaper that way, and so much easier as you don't then have to carry 2 cards. The combined ID card and e-gate is not available yet.

Definately Hilton Resort and Spa in RAK. If you book in advance you should get some good rates. Plus there are vouchers in the Entertainer books for most of the restaurants.

Go to Dubai airport, T1, up the stairs on right hand side. Place is dead - 200aed and passport is all that is required. Was done in about 15 mins. Think they are airport staff so probably work 8am - 2.30pm so probably best leaving until tomorrow. I once got mine done there at midnight before catching a flight. It was a few years ago though.

i would second booking.com. don't got to agoda.com as they have rates higher then other websites. also you can check on laterooms.com. for hostels all over the world there is a separate website. can't remember exactly as have never booked from there. but it starts with hostels :) its hostelsworld.com edited by manubhadauria on 11/07/2011 I have used Agoda.com and got cheaper rates than booking.com and a few other sites. I think it really depends on your search criteria and what is available.

What's the egate card for, anyway? We've got our brand new Emirates ID cards and were thinking of getting egate cards. Is the theory that we can combine the two? Eventually you should be able to use your ID card for e-gate, although there is no time frame for this happening and its been in progress for well over a year already.

I think you will only need your passport with vaild residence visa. They usually take the photograph for you as they process everything. You can get it done at Dnata on SZR or in the airport. There are probably other places too (I get mine done in Jebel Ali Free Zone) but I think Dnata would be the closest for you.

about Dhs.220 i think cant remember exactly...... That sounds about right. I don't have mine in the ranches, I decided to get one in Jebel Ali so I could call on my way to work and I am glad I did now. I can't believe they would get rid of the ones in the ranches, I would have thought there would be a waiting list for them?

I am not sure if there are any three bedrooms available in the Meadows and prices in the Lakes can be higher than the Springs so it would depend on the budget. I live in Arabian Ranches and love it here but the Lakes is also nice. Some areas of the Springs are okay but the construction of the new road and traffic problems would put me off. Sorry I don't know where Jebel Ali Primary is so cannot comment on the commute but I would say Arabian Ranches would be a suitable location for traveling to Abu Dhabi, especially with the Bypass road. Arabian Ranches is a great community, well established with no construction. Access in and out is quite good and it's quite a central location with shops, restaurants, medical center and golf club so you don't need to travel far if you don't want to.

We will not use as many vouchers from the travel book as we do from the others. So far we have only used one but that saved us over 3000 dhs so it was still worth buying the book. if we manage a long weekend in Oman before the end of the year we will probably use more vouchers but next year I will probably have a look at the display copy first and only buy when we want to use something.

We had the same problem a few weeks ago when we bought a new bird table. We tried ACE and the pet shop in the ranches but couldnt find any so they ended up with a cheap bag of nuts from Le Marche. (not salted ones before anyone asks!)

Sorry ladies I had my accounting head on in that cars depreciate quite rapidly unless they are vintage cars, so please accept my apologies. If you make(?) on any sale, good on you. No offense I hope? No offense taken :) All cars are different. Two years ago I bought a new car and knew as soon as I drove it out of the showroom I had lost money!

Good news simplesasabc Hope you do make a profit on your car but I always thought cars depreciated and quite rapidly? Good for you! Not all cars depreciate rapidly. The first car I owned in Dubai sold for approximately 3000 dhs less than I paid three years earlier.

There is an offer on Cobone to hire a Nissan Tilda for 1 month (999 Dhs). I haven't used this company though so cannot comment on the service. Usually it works out cheaper or same price to hire for 1 month rather than 3 weeks so check both rates before signing up.

I think the one at Motor City is Champion Cleaners? if you google them I am sure you will find the number. I can't remember the name of the one next to Le Marche. You could also search on here for the number for Dubai Laundry who are usually very good.

I always find making large batches and freezing individual portions helps with the diet and saves money. It's much easier to come home and grab something homemade from the freezer than start cooking from scratch, or ordering a takeaway! I usually make a variety of dishes such as chilli, spagehtti bolognase, cottage pie, sweet and sour chicken, beef stew and a few different curries. For all my recipes I always use good quality lean meat, fresh vegetables and use very little or no oil.

Time Out usually list prices for most of the 5 star hotels. Jebel Ali Hotel is nice, they have a few pools and a lovely beach. Do you have the Entertainer books? The body book has 2 for 1 vouchers for beach day passes (Jebel Ali Hotel, Bab Al Shams, Habtoor Grand plus others that I can't remember right now). If you have the family entertainer book you should find vouchers in there for the resaurants too.

Great idea about the memory book Muurtje. How about an all you can eat buffet. Fixed price and everyone pays for what they have and no disputes (ish) at the end. You can even collect the cash up front, if it's a large number of people so you don't get stung. I'm sure no-one would be offended particularly this age range. Thank you ladies, i am always thankful for you guys as i always get loads of good ideas, thanks really! Do you think I will find a 2 for 1 Friday brunch in entertainment vouchers?? Nelsons have Friday brunch for only 165! That's cheap if I have voucher eh! I am planning to do it on July 1 (Friday) as he is leaving on July 4. I think last weeks Time Out magazine had buy one get one free vouchers for Nelsons brunch

Thanks for all the replies. The letter will come from the company but not sure if they will follow up with a legal person? The final salary payment was correct but they are now trying to say the salary was paid in a different currency, hence the balance they are trying to claim back but this is utter rubbish. Basically I think they are struggling financially and trying anyway they can think of to generate some cash flow. As I mentioned earlier this was over 8 months ago so there are no ties to the company now. I guess if they wish to take it further the free zone authority need to get involved.

Hi Yorky - have you tried the Labour Ministry? DH had big issue with his gratuity payment recently, and he went there first (as it's free!) and admittedly had to push to see the right person, but they were incredibly knowledgeable and supportive. Worth a visit if you havent. It's the huge building on the road (right hand side) between Dubai and Sharjah. Thanks Pinks, we haven't tried anywhere yet just found out today so trying to get some advice before we do anything. Do you know if the Labour Ministry deals with Free Zone issues? I can't believe a company can come back after 8 months and expect you to hand money back to them.....but then again maybe they can?

It is rainy season in the Maldives but the temperature should still be very nice. I checked lots of reviews on trip advisor and we have still decided to book for August. I have also been in April which is classed as high season and we had a shower every afternoon. We did Mauritius last August and the weather was very mixed and can be very different from one side of the island to the other. We did Cyprus a few years ago but I wouldn't rush back, although that's a personal view and it does get some good reviews on here.
