I was at the Anantara The Palm at the weekend and I am sure the beach villas had their own pools. They are not very private but they have amazing views of the beach and sea. The lagoon access rooms are also very nice, its not your own pool but it was very quiet, unlike the main pool which was very busy.

The Golf Club at the Ranches arranges small wedding receptions and they have a couple of different locations depending on number of people and budget. Or you could check some restaurants to see if they have a private dining room that is big enough?

The supermarket in the Ranches is always well stocked and reasonably priced. The only time I find it difficult to park their is at prayer time on a Friday or when the kids finish school. I also use Spinneys at Motor City on weekends but I use the lower level parking which isn't too bad if you get there before lunhtime.

If you know your size try Figleaves http://www.figleaves.com/uk/ not sure if they deliver direct to the UAE but I have used them via my shop and ship account and the items arrived within 1 week. If you like the Empreinte brand there is a lady who acts as an agent for them here in Dubai and she will do home measuring and delivery services, I can give details if you are interested. I have tried the shop mentioned by the other ladies TKD but I didn't find their service lived up to the recommendations. Maybe I went on the wrong day but the first selection didn't fit well and in the end I felt I had a fitting room filled with a mass of underwear but not sure they really got me the right size to try, rather me just trying until it felt right. Once I selected the bra I asked for the pants to match in the size I wanted but they were out of stock but talked me into the size smaller....obviously my mistake for taking them but poor sales from their side too as I would hesitate going back or recommending their services to friends.

Ladies, I have a question for those of you who have UAE and UK wills. Where do you keep them? We have 2 originals for each, one we will keep with us here but would you suggest keeping the other somewhere else? Thanks :)

Prices usually start going up in October so not sure if there will be many deals at that time but it may be worth checking Booking.com or Agoda.com to see if anything comes up. If they are looking for a 2 night stay the travel Entertainer book has vouchers for some hotels on the Palm, there are also some in the complementory book that comes with the other Entertainer books.

Disgusting tasting nail varnish? Not sure if you can buy such thing though.. I have a habit of that sometimes if I'm stressed and keeping constant nail varnish on helps me..saying that if I'm really stressed then not even that stops me ha! edited by Jcoc56 on 02/09/2014 You used to be able to buy this at the pharmacy when I was a young child. My mother used it on my nails and those of my siblings who enjoyed biting their nails. Don't know if you can still get it. I still remember the taste - terribly bitter and the taste stayed in your mouth for ages. edited by mrsb. on 02/09/2014 You can buy it from Boots

Thank you all for your tips but I forgot to mention that I also bite the skin around and manicure can't help it I did too, so much so they were very sore but it really helped getting my nails done as I didn't want to bite or pick at the skin. Also use a good hand cream or solar oil to keep the skin soft. I would say give it a go, if it doesn't work you can always try something else. I agree with the ladies that acrylics are not the best for your nails but personally I find having 1 set on for a few weeks doesn't make that much difference and once they are removed you can switch to gel, although my favourite is bio sculpture.

I was a terrible nail biter when I was growing up. Its only the past 10 years that I have stopped but occasionally when I am really stressed I might start again and don't usually stop until all my nails are really short and sore :( The thing I found that helped was having my nails done nice, it stopped me wanting to bite them. I had no patience to grow them so to start I had a full set of acrylic nails which are really tough so a good option if you are no used to having longer nails. Once your own nails have grown under the acrylic you can go for gel or normal nail polishes. It makes a big difference to me having a regular manicure as I am not very good at painting my own nails. Good luck :)

Thank you for that!, any other places you recommend with the possibility of private pool. We don't need a big place as there are only the 2 of us and our beloved dog! Having your own private pool will depend on what budget you have. If you stay in a community which is already finished many of them have communal swimming pools which are very nice, plus you don't have the added expense of looking after it.

Really depends on which part you will be looking at, some areas are finished and nicely landscaped, others are still like a building site. I would say to commute to Jebel Ali Free Zone it will take approx 45 minutes if traffic is okay. There are a few different types of villas, some come with their own pool which may or may not be of interest to you but there are no communal pools at The Villa. I believe the nearest shop it a short drive away at Silicon Oasis but I am sure others that live there will have more details on what is available. If you are coming out it's definitely worth a visit to see what you think of the area.

You will be able to buy them at lots of stores in any of the malls but it's way too early for them to have anything in stock yet. November will probably be when you start seeing items available. You can get reasonable priced items at Ace, Homes R Us, Home Centre, Geant, C4 and then more expensive at places like Lakeland, Crate and Barrel and Galleries Lafayette. edited by Yorky on 29/08/2014

Last year Al Qasr was sold out in September. fran82, I can't help with the child friendly brunches but generally speaking if they cater for families at normal Friday brunches then you will get much of the same at Christmas only more festive.

Personally if it was just rubbish and not unwanted, reuseable items I would not ask Take My Junk. In the past I have used the following company who collect in the Ranches (800-WASTE). They charge a small fee depending on the size / amount and will come and advise cost before removing any of the waste. http://www.dulsco.com/contactus

I've used Mplus for years without any complaints, that was until recently. The air con in the master bedroom broke mid July, they came out within 24 hours and informed new parts were required and they would send a quotation. The quotation arrived 4 days later with a note that we must pay in advance to proceed, which we did the same day. Four weeks later it was still not fixed and we received no updates from them either. After multiple phone calls I finally got it fixed after waiting five weeks (at this point I demanded to speak to a manager and requested they return the money if not fixed with 24 hours). I was considering taking out a package with them but after this experience I am glad I didn't. I'm not sure what has happened as they were very good in the past even when parts needed ordering it was only a few days and they informed you of the status.

I agree with Daza, Arabian Ranches is a great community and definitely one to consider if it is within your budget. If you plan to come over for a visit I would recommend taking a day to drive to the different locations suggested so you can get a feel for them. As others mentioned some are still like building sites, which does get you more for your money but there are less facilities.

If you are considering Mauritius, check rates for Shandrani. The resort is all inclusive and offers a variety of restaurants and bars. I have been twice at different times of the year and found prices very reasonable. For the Maldives, I'm not sure which resorts you have looked at or how many nights you intend to stay for but there are usually a few options to suit different budgets. I've been to Lily Beach twice and love it but I can no longer justify their price increase. It is over 1000 Dhs per day more expensive than when I first stayed 5 years ago. I want to go back to the Maldives and I prefer all inclusive so I have been looking at Kuredu, Vilamendhoo and Meeru which look more reasonable.

There is the Entertainer Body Body which has two for one vouchers in it for beach passes. If you have a specific hotel in mind check their Facebook page as they may have offers running during the summer. Time Out usually list hotels offering beach passes but not sure if they also give details of current offers. If you don't mind traveling to Abu Dhabi I noticed The Westin had an offer on their Facebook page for weekday pool passes (no beach but nice pool area). It was 80 Dhs per person with free credit of 80 Dhs for the pool bar and restaurant.

I am quite surprised at the number of replies not supporting the family living together. I know it can be tough supporting a family in Dubai and cost of renting and education increases every year but if the package / salary supports a family living together and having the same or better lifestyle as their home country why not go for it? I understand the anxiousness of moving children from settled environments but with two supportive parents I am sure as many children do they will settle in new schools.

If you have a driving licence in your home country check if it is transferable without taking an exam in Dubai. If you do hold a licence you can hire a car using a tourist visas. You can also rent a hotel / serviced apartment for the short term until you get your residency sorted out. edited by Yorky on 28/07/2014

Thank you to the ladies who replied with the very helpful advice. I went to the Al Manara branch yesterday afternoon and the whole process took less than 30 minutes. During Ramadan they are open 9am to 6pm, I arrived just after 4pm and it was very quiet. I took old and new passport, Emirates ID, marriage certificate and driving licence. I explained that I wanted a new licence to show my married surname and he only asked to see Emirates ID and driving licence. It would have cost 120 Dhs but I also had an outstanding speeding fine which I had to pay.

Hi I changed my name on my license today. I went to the Al Manara Centre with my old license, passport and visa and Emirates ID. They needed copies of those documents and I paid 120dhs. It was done really quickly taking 20 minutes in all. Hope this helps :) Very helpful, thank you. Did you need to do the eye test?

I lost my drivers license and went this morning to have it replaced. My old license was in my maiden name but like you, my current passport, visa and Emirates ID are all in my married name. I was really worried they wouldn't issue a new license when the name was different to that on all my other documentation and I'd have to jump through hoops to change it. I didn't even mention it as I didn't want to bring it to their attention if they didn't notice.....the lady helping me didn't bat an eyelash and automatically updated my replacement license to reflect the name on my Emirates ID. Can't promise that if you go in specifically to change your name the process won't be different but it was not an issue today at all for a lost license (hint?). Despite reading on many different sites (including this one) that I would need a myriad of documents (as well as new photos and eye test since my license was over 5 years old) this was not the case. I went to two places to get an eye test only to find out I didn't need one. The only thing they asked for was my Emirates ID. No new eye test and no recent photo (they automatically updated the photo on my license using the photo from my Emirates ID). Having said that, I took copies of my passport, visa, ID, old maiden name passport and husband's passport and visa just in case. Always good to be prepared here! I went to the new Al Manara Municipality Centre on SZR at 11:15 this morning. I was out 20 minutes later. Could not have been simpler. During Ramadan their hours are 9:00-18:00. It is worth calling the RTA just to get the most up to date information. They were very helpful when at the second clueless optician this morning I rang to find out what I needed. They confirmed I needed nothing but my Emirates ID and directed me to the nearest appropriate centre (thankfully because I was headed to Al Barsha which issues new licenses according to RTA website but in reality no longer provides the service). I was prepared for a couple of hours waiting at best and multiple trips at worst and couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. Good luck! edited by Catawba KSE on 09/07/2014 Thank you! Very helpful

Yorky whose sponsorship are you on? I said DH as I assumed his (sorry!). As your sponsor has to authorise you to have a DL then it is better to get any change signed by the person on the TL if it's a company, and if so you will also need to take a copy of the TL and the passport/visa copy of that person. Better to take everything you can think of :) Your right, best to be over prepared! I will get work to provide the documents and head over next week. Fingers crossed it's not too difficult!

My name on my passport (married) and licence don't match and haven't for over 5 years (the visa didn't match for 3 years cause they printed it wrong and said no need to change it :) I have re registered my car, bought a new car and claimed on the insurance without anyone saying anything. Are you sure you really have to do it? Ask the insurance again you might get another answer! I got the insurance renewal through last week and a reminder again today so I emailed to ask how do I amend the name on the policy and they said the policy will only be issued with the same name as the driving licence. I was worried that now my new passport, visa and Emirates ID show my married name I would need to process the car insurance as the same?

Hi Yorky I haven't done this but suggest taking: Letter from DH confirming the change (mentioning PP numbers & DL number) & signed by him Fill out the form again just in case, remember DH has to sign this too (don't think you will need this though) PP Emirates ID I don't think you'll need to do an eye test either. Should be quite a quick procedure. Thanks for the reply. I was going to take passport with visa page, Emirates ID and a copy of the marriage certificate. Do you think I will still need a letter from DH even though I'm not under his sponsorship? If anyone knows the. Opening times during Ramadan that would also be very helpful. Thanks :) Also if anyone can confirm which opticians do the eye test. I was thinking of getting that done anyway so if it is required I have everything ready. edited by Yorky on 09/07/2014

If anyone has changed their name on their UAE driving licence I would be very grateful if you could share the procedure for doing this. I want my new licence to show my married name (I cannot insure the car unless the driving licence shows the correct name). I have my visa and Emirates ID already changed but what other documents will I need to provide? Also will I need to do another eye test? Can this be done at any optician? I only have a few weeks to do this before my insurance expires so any information is much appreciated as I guess the places I need to visit will also be working shorter hours during Ramadan. TIA

Do bio scuplture gel nails lift at the edges like acrylics? I have been wearing them for a year but constantly have to apply cuticle oil. Do you get refills or are they replaced every 3 weeks (or however long they last) Also any idea of prices? edited by liinsh on 09/07/2014 I've never had problems with my nails whilst using Biosculpture Gel. I usually have mine done every two or three weeks. There is no refil, they soak off the old gel and replace with new everytime. I still use cuticle oil / moisturiser but i don't think you need as much as when you have acrylics but everyone is different. This link is from their website but its currently being updated so I'm not sure if the menu and prices are up to date. http://www.thenailspa.com/TNS_menu.pdf
