I Cannot believe you don't have one! You take your Qatar ID and preferably your DH and head down there. The form can be filled out there. They take your picture on site. The fee he paid does not need to be paid again. It takes 5 Minutes if DH's is current as he would have already done the employer letter of permission;). If he can't go, I would bring a letter of permission to be safe.

Hi Immb2012, I would love to meet for a chat. I will pop by tomorrow in between packing for a trip tomorrow night and prep'ing my friends house for her return tomorrow night. If not, I'm back on the 29th. As for Sasha P. , holy snap!!That blogger had issues that seem beyond a single policy of a compound. Some compounds do not allow guests to use the pool! I have never had anything but positive experiences at Y Village. I suppose the reason for the 'no maids in the pool' is because they are in fact employees of the residents, not guests or residents themselves per sei. No one that I have spoken too seems miffy about it (maids I mean).

Hi Sasha, welcome in advance. I am a 40 something Canadian woman, and although I am married I am without my husband most of the time. I go everywhere by myself, wear normal but conservative clothing, drive, just the same as in Canada. Most things are air conditioned, but just like home, walking to the car is hot, the air conditioning in the car may not be enough 2 months of the year when it is hottest, but believe me you do aclimatise and it becomes normal. I was driving yeaterday with the windows open and the music playing, just like at home. TV is a bit dull, we got a vpn so we download anything and everything, sensor free. Movies and music can be widely purchased here. It is a very safe country, and you get used to people looking at you. I was never really annoyed by it, some people here come from a culture where openly looking at you is not a come on, or is not personal. They are just looking. I am blond, so maybe I get it a bit more, but I don't even notice unless my 15 year old is with me, as it still bothers him. I have never ever felt personally in danger, no matter where I have been and at what time of day or night. My biggest surprise was not having as much culture shock as I thought I would have. It is 2 years here for me, and when I leave for long times, I am happy to come home. By the way, I live in a compound of Qatar U profs, Y Village, and it is awesome! I highly recommend it. Good luck

Hi Purple Haze, setting aside all of the good natured ribbing you have seen over the last few days, it may be safer for you to start with women only, and they can introduce a man they know into the mix. Then you have a level of security.Good luck edited by yyzdoh on 07/06/2013

Progressions, you kill me! You're awesome! I will join your magazine club, and just like the book club I will not finish all the required reading before attending but will have very strong opinions anyways.:). But the beverages thing did sound good from the club, so maybe we could incorporate that...just saying.

Okay, so at the suggestion of (perhaps Progressions) and 2 others we tried the California Tortilla restaurant across from Chili's at Ramada Signal. It was AWESOME!!!:) If they had Coron*'s with lime I would have set up base camp and never left!! The music was great, salsa excellent, burritos perfect and the wall of hot sauce is inspired! I tried both the 10+ sauces and 5 others, and I am so happy and in agony right now! I highly recommend it, and it was nice to see that for a Monday it was comfortably busy and hopping. I will be back (as soon as the burning goes away ;) ).

Hi oz4, I have responded on the other post you made but I will say that the fees are not as insane as ASD, no offence Lori_S ;) and I don't feel like I'm getting a mortgage paying it. My sons fees run about 33000 QAR per year as it is run by Qatar Foundation so is not for profit. The school is top notch in my book, and I'm grateful he is there. There are no greater behavioral issues than in any good quality highschool. As it is an IB school the children would be streamed for University, although I don't know the numbers and don't want to guess. One phone call to the achool would get you that info though +97444542018 or +97444542019 or +97444542020. Good luck!

Hi oz4, so far so good. My son loves his school, has made lots of friends and for the older grades it's an IB curriculum. The school trips are great, the facilities of good quality. My son is now in grade 10, started in grade 9, but friends who have younger kids in the school have had a similar experience. The school fees btw are not as insane as some other schools. The downside is that they do accept local kids first so placements may be more difficult in the younger grades. His class is 40/60 split local/western.

We got the Celeste for all rooms. The Riviera and Renaissance were not offered then, but I'm not sure what they would need to do (heat/cool option?) to make it worth the extra money and the Celeste is heavenly to crawl into at night. The benefit of not having the pillow top is you can flip the mattress easier unless the pillow top is on both sides. We got ours in May and are very happy with them

Hi Lesya, welcome! I assume your hubby is offered an F/O position with QR.. Although for 10,000 you will likely be in an apartment, I know many that take that allowance, add a few 1000 more, and get really decent villa accommodations. Unless you're a major league shopper, you should do fine on that salary. It helps that school is covered, and I know from first hand experience that the insurance works well. It may be best to let him come first and sort out the housing and do all the paperwork. Theyre really busy the first several weeks! If you have any specific questions, I'm glad to help answer them. My understanding is that the mattresses from Homecentre are 210 cm long. I have not seen much bedding in that size, so that could be an issue. I got our beds at www.originssofas.com. They delivered and set up in 24 hours. Ours beds are the individual pocket coil mattresses, 180 x 200 cm and 200 x 200 cm and I found tons of bedding to fit. Good luck!

Hi Cal Hob! I agree with DebK, life is totally what you make it here. We are from Orangeville, been here 14 months. If you have any questions feel free to throw them out there. My advice is to bring the table. You may not find it in the country, if you do, it's the cheapened version without the cheapened price, and for sure when your kids are done with it, you can sell it no problem. Good luck on the move

hi parkclark! We are in town til the 18th and then head to (hopefully sunny) Orlando after a stop in Toronto. We will be back on or about Jan 5. We were here for Christmas last year and it actually was nice. As it is just like every other day here we went for eggs benedict at Pauls and that will now be our annual tradition on years we are in town. :) Enjoy the apartment hunting, pick up a Marhaba guide in the magazine and book section of Carrefour, it"s a great resource. If you have any questions, feel free to email, I'm glad to help!!

Hi parkclarke, there are a tonne of us here at Y Village too, so if you move around here you will recognise the accents. That being said, although I have a lot of Canadian friends now, I can't believe the diversity of multiculturalism at every house party we have! We are late 40's, no young kids. We lived in Orangeville and Cambridge Ontario before here, with hubby born in Toronto, and I was born outside of Ottawa. I would be glad to meet up once you get here, but drop me a line with any questions you have in the meantime. :) And for DebK, those places all bring back memories! Furthest north I got was North Bay, it's a bit warmer here ;)

Marycatherine, thank you so much. I have been to all those places, and more but will talk to Lulu management as a friend did say she saw it there once. As for spaghetti squash, I so agree! I got it 2 months ago at Spinney's at The Mall and will be checking again there tomorrow. It is delicious with red wine (de-alcoholised of course!), parmesan cheese, pesto, and shredded red peppers

Roosha, good for you for adopting a kitty! There are so many...I would suggest, as hard as it may seem, to keep her indoors during the deworming process. Your child is 5 and is old enough to get the concept of the kitty being sick, and needing to not be touched. It will be a good training for when the kitty is fixed as your 5 year old will need to be hands off then too. If you put her out, and the mother attacks, she may run away, and that will be it, or she may not trust you anymore for security if she is panicked to come in and you leave her out. Good luck with her, I'm sure she will be a joy, and remember, cardboard boxes are free, and they love to hide, sleep and play in them ;)

Wow GinaM, sorry if you feel incensed! We will never forget the families affected by the fire! People lost their lives, and people lost their families, and people lost their livlihoods. It would compound the tragedy for us to not support those who still can salvage a livlihood from this disaster. To boycott the mall so people will be brought to justice faster, is in my humble opinion, naive. It won't happen faster for that, nor will it be glossed over or forgotten because it has reopened, all that it may do is drive some businesses into the ground that are trying to stay afloat. That being said, the mall appears to be only about 15 percent open. The part between Zara and the food court, or ground zero as it were, is blocked off by murals. Carrefour is open and everything looks fresh, Pauls, Dean and Deluca, M&S, Virgin, are closed still. Some of the food court is open, they are painting in the closed Boots. I could smell popcorn from the theatre. Many shops that were open are only partly stocked, and many are empty and look like new construction.

Hi DanLou! I found "simulated sisal-like" rugs at Homes for Us or whatever it's called at Hyatt. I bought 2 beige ones, and they also had brown/black I think. They also had lots of colourful smaller fabric rugs that were multi-coloured. If you see anything real, let me know! ;)
