I had the same with my DH Zeph. I found my housemaid was really happy to help out and loved looking after my mum - far more than I did!! I am sure your maid will be just as happy to help accommodate your relatives, but I know where you are coming from because I spent ages thinking how do I ask her, when it was really very simple and easy really. And I did ask, not tell. Good for you for being thoughtful towards your helper. A good employee is always worth looking after. Thank you. You sound like you have the same thoughts as I do when it comes to our helpers :) Not sure why I am delaying asking her!

I had this dilema in our previous house. Our housemaid had a large room downstairs because we did not use it and I wanted her to be comfortable etc . However, when my mum comes to visit she cannot climb stairs so the only room for her was our Housemaid. I did not like the idea of having to move her out but then weighed it up against how many times would I need to do this and it was actually only once per year so it was not a huge issue and our housemaid was really fine and understanding. I think it all boils down to how many times do you think you will need that spare room compared to the uprooting of the maids personal belongings and intereupting her private space I think it would only be for this visit (or once per year). My sister is going to visit with her son but I would be comfortable having them near us. I am sure she would be OK about it and there would not be too much she needs to move. I spend more time with her so I have more concerns of her comfort. DH rarely sees her so he is a bit more blaise. And I can understand it is his parents so he wants them to be comfortable and they are elderly.

Clear out your maids room - get the stuff you are storing in there put away somewhere else and instal her in the room that she is supposed to be in - that way - you can have guests and she doesn't have to re-locate every time. If it was me I'd be a bit miffed if I had to move out of my own room to make space for visitors. Just have a big clear out, put some pictures/photos up on the walls and make it nice for her - but give her back the maids room. The maids room is tiny with no windows and I would be so guilty putting someone in there. Now we have the issue of she has had a nice room and then to move to that. Would have no problem except she is wonderful to us and the kids.
