"winnIpeg" Have lived in both those places too and around the world. Love BC ( spent half of my life there) and all it has to offer. TO...same, love it. Spent a few years there as a late teen and early 20's...soo much fun, but there's something about where you were born that seems to call people back. I'm not sure where we'll end up once we leave here but both Vancouver and Winnipeg (couldn't be more different) are both calling me. I do however like that the cost of living is lower and not only can we afford a nice house but a cottage at the lake with the toys too. BC? either on the sunshine coast or Kamloops....not bad choices either. Ahh, maybe I'm just homesick? LOL

I am from and grew up Victoria, lived in Toronto and Calgary and been to Winnepeg once in the winter (never again) and once in the summer (never again). We are pretty spoilt on the west coast with our weather and the fact that we can do everything year round. It is not a place that I would ever consider as I hate the cold weather and mosquitos love me so that rules out the summer. That being said, when I lived in TO I met a lot of people from Winnepeg and for the most part are really nice friendly people. It all depends on what you are used to and looking for. I am sure it is a lovely place for families and you can actually afford a house there, unlike Victoria and Vancouver!

Not my first choice but I grew up in Toronto. My cousins however are from peg and LOVE it! They have a good set of friends, everyone is so laid back, its very outdoorsy, sure winters suck and summers are buggy but they love it there and wouldn't move to Toronto if they had the choice. Its just really what you make of it, I suppose!

ha ha, yes seems I forgot about Slurpees! While I'm on S's, let's not forget the mighty "social". Me thinks us Winnipegers should get together!!

I think Winnipeg is a good place for families, for bachelors is way too boring. I went to university there and even met my husband. I ahd very good memories. The city is very affordable and small, but I also heard the crime rates are high but compared to many other countries is fine, there are some areas that are not that great. As someone said the area close to St Vital mall and University of Manitoba are nice. The big problem is the extremely cold and windy winters and then in the summer it is humid and hot and you will see mosquitos like never before in your life.

Agree with Rickadon and dogcatcher. We moved to Calgary many years back from the Southern Hemisphere. Wow what a shock but you know what we adapted and for many years it has been "home".We love the big blue winter sky.:) You adapt and as Rickadon said it is up to you if you make a success of a posting or not. Enjoy the adventure make the most of it. All the best.

Winnipeg has a very cool vibe and lots of culture, theatre, ballet and one of the largest Folk Festivals in the world. The people are very friendly, healthcare is excellent, two universities, it is affordable. As for the cold, well in 2011 you just go to the shop with your visa card and buy one of those jackets that keeps your body at exactly 37 C. No biggie. It is a great place for families. If you go let me know and I can put you in touch with some friendly Manitobans. Good luck. Oh and they have slurpees.

@Amadeus......REALLY? Having never been there and not wanting to give your opinion you sure gave your opinion on somewhere you've never been! Winnipeg in fact is a great city with a lot to do. Amazing people Great cottage country ( winter, summer, fall and spring ) Winter months are cold but sunny and you can play outside for hours ( skidoo, taboggan, fires at night to roast marshmellows) Summer is not mosquito infested. Yes some areas can be bad but you use spray! there are non toxic ones too! Winnipeg Blue Bombers....great and cheap tickets to watch CFL ( it's always fun at the games) NHL....yup, we now have our JETS back! Winnipeg Goldeyes (baseball) another team, cheap tickets and fun for everyone! Don't know how to curl? Great place to learn! Cross country skiing? same! USA shopping and cheap flights! In the Middle of the country so flights in Canada are cheaper than from Vancouver or Halifax for example Beautiful praries growing Flax, Canola, Soy Beans, Wheat, Corn and stunning Sunflowers Good malls and casinos if you're interested Amazing community spirit...yes we have high crime in "some" areas but who doesn't? Wicked is in town so we have great Theatre Royal Winnipeg Ballet Winnipeg Symphony Amazing museums and being built is the Human Right Museum ( amazing architecture and it's not even finished) Camping Fishing Hiking Great food...Ukrainian, Indian, West Indian... Folk Fest Folklorama ( great summer fun...google it ) The Forks (similar to Granville Island) Oak Hammock Marsh for the kids Kids Museum The Royal Canadian Mint.....thats where our dirham coins and fills are made! the list goes on and on!! Go to Winnipeg with an open mind just like you'd go anywhere else. We are known for pot holes and detours but harsh winters and flooding ( in certain areas ) will hurt the roads. Winnipeg people are friendly and always looking for a good time. edited by dogcatcher on 06/09/2011

I am an east coast girl at heart but lived in Winnipeg for 5 years, both of my children were born there. I too had no interest in living there and knew very little about it before moving there. It was a bit tough before having kids, though I think moving a lot of places can be. I made some incredible friends once I had my children some of those friendships are still very strong 7 years later. It is a great place for families, lots of out door stuff to do. Very close to great cottage/camping country and some lovely lakes. It is really cold in the winter but it is usually sunny too. So at least when you look outside the sun is shining and it isn't over cast and grey. You can layer up and be fine where as living on the coast it can be very damp and hard to keep the cold out. At the end of the day any place you live is what you make it! I arrived in Winnipeg in December and it was -50 C with the windchill and seriously wondered what had I gotten myself into. Once I got settled in I really enjoyed my time there. When looking for a place to live I would look at the south end of the city in the St Vital area. Lots of families and new developments there. Good luck HTH

It's not a very exciting or pretty place to live. If you are the outdoorsy type you would probably enjoy it more than if you place importance on retail therapy. Higher crime rate that many other canadian cities, but still nothing to be afraid of. It is remote enough that getting to any other major city in Canada will require a plane trip or a very, very long car ride. Would not be my first choice either.

I am from Vancouver and have never been to Winnipeg, but it definitely would not be my first choice of cities to live in (or second, or third...). The winters are long and cold, lots of snow, and the summers are hot, with lots of Mosquitos. I can't speak to the other aspects of Winnipeg, but I thought I would throw in my 2 cents. Good luck with your decision!

My husband has been offered a job in Winnipeg Canada so I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the place. We have 3 children aged between 7 and 12. Is it a good place for fAmilies? Is it a nice place to live etc etc. Any advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks
