Our family will be moving from to Dubai back to the USA in June. I will be sending my beloved dog to the states in May.

Can anyone give me feedback on a great pet relocation company that won't break the bank?

I know DKC gets great reviews but I also know they are very expensive. Has anyone had experience with Snoopys or Pet Relocators? Both gave me quotes and where very helpful. Pet Relocators gave me the best rate but really want to hear some feedback!

Thanks in advance
Sarah

Such useful information! That is why I LOVE this forum! I am really considering flying on the same flight raw Lulu and maybe have someone help me with the paper work, because it seems that is pretty involved and I don't want any hold ups! Again thanks for taking the time to help me out!

Not true Humanitarian. Taken from Emirates' website: "For all other itineraries, falcons, cats, dogs and pet birds can be transported as checked baggage in the hold, provided the total journey time (including any transit time) is less than 17 hours, and all appropriate conditions are met. Please contact your local Emirates office well in advance of travel for more information." http://www.emirates.com/ae/english/help/faqs/faqdetails.aspx?faqId=544304

You can do everything yourself. The dog can travel with you as a luggage only if the flight is not more than 10 hours long, otherwise cargo.

It depends on whether the route is calculated as weight concept or piece concept. Emirates flights to north and south America are piece concept. You are allowed two bags of 23kg and if you want to take more it's $175 for an extra bag. Double it if your extra "bag" is a pet and you pay $350 to a max of 32kg. Skycargo to N America charge about AED 114 per kg plus whatever charges. If it's a weight concept route you pay per kg. I'm not sure how animal costs are calculated per kg. My second paragraph is info given to me by Emirates yesterday.

Checked baggage is much cheaper and to the US it is allowed (to the UAE is another story). Just for reference, I brought my dog to the UAE from Qatar as cargo and it cost me nearly twice what I paid for her as checked baggage from the USA to Qatar. She only weighs 7kg. You don't need a pet relocator to take or send your dog. The paperwork is a bit tedious, but it isn't impossible. In fact, financially, it might be cheaper to travel with her and come back to the UAE rather than send her via a relocator. I was quoted $3000 to bring my dog to the UAE from the US by a relocator. You can also book cargo yourself, so if you can't travel with your dog and someone can pick her up on the other end, that is a cheaper option than a door to door relocator.

Accompanied means the dog goes in the hold as part of your checked allowance. I believe it is cheaper as dogs sent as cargo are calculated as volumetric weight, whereas accompanied baggage is calculated by actual weight. Hence a 25kg Labrador in a travel crate of 102x69x76cm would be 107kg volumetric on cargo or simply 25kg + crate weight say 5kg = 30kg actual on accompanied. I could be incorrect of course someone else may be able to elaborate further.

When you say accompanied baggage does that mean in the cabin with us or in cargo? My only issue with that is we are staying with friends the last month we are here as our lease is up May 13 and we have to stay till kids finish exams. Anyway their kids are deathly afraid of dogs :( so my Lulu won't be able to stay. That is why she would be sent home a little early. But its definitely something to think about maybe I can head back with the dog and the hubby can stay with the kids oh I like that idea :) I am going to check with Alison and see what my options are! Thanks I doubt they would allow a dog in the cabin with you. It will go in the hold I imagine :-)

There's always Alison, who runs Dubai Doghouse, and she helps people ship their pets via accompanied baggage. It's much cheaper than shipping the pets separately but there are some restrictions as you can only fly certain airlines and must be on the same flight. The savings, however, can be enormous. As in thousands and thousands of Dhs. You can find Alison by googling her name and Dubai Doghouse. edited by Tallybalt on 06/03/2014

I know 2 friends who relocated dogs with Snoopys in the last year and were very happy. I also know that DKC were very helpful on an initial enquiry and called up and made loads of great suggestions.

Thanks in advance Sarah Depending on the breed of your dog, size, final destination and airline. It is possible to take the dog as accompanied luggage. The paperwork is a lot, I have been told, but you can save many thousands of dirhams. It's worth investigating.
