It's definitely too much, upgraded or not. Average going rate is around 100K (check Dubizzle) and you will still find 2 bed Springs for 90K

I used to live next door in Al Waleed Paradise and we had no construction noise problems at all. The awful accident where a little boy fell out of a window and his mother then jumped after him in front of her older daughter was in Mag 214, but that's a while ago now so I doubt that could influence rent prices much. Yes it was a very sad day [url=http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/boy-mother-die-after-fall-from-jlt-1.877829'>link[/url'>

Aw Kimmc pity you don't live in Dubai. I did have a look in The ToyStore in Ibn Battuta but didn't see any, maybe I'll check the larger shop in MoE. I also checked Hamleys website and didn't see any. If anyone is going to ToysRUs this week can you have a look for me please :) All I see is Lego, no building construction toys in metal (with nuts, screws, bolts etc), only plastic. <em>edited by Alismum on 26/05/2013</em>

I can't help, but just wanted to say thank you for transporting me back to my childhood! My sister and I had Meccano Set #5 (no electrics or anything) and spent hours and HOURS building things. :) Same here Pinks, we had meccano as kids, used to occupy us for ages. Wonder why it's (or similar brand) not one of the popular (non electronic) toys like Lego. My LO loves building, but the plastic ones are no good.

Anyone seen meccano or other similar metal constructions toys? Something like this [url=http://www.lambstoys.co.uk/images/_lib/meccano-multi-model-super-construction-set-9009313-0-1339512849000.jpg'>link[/url'> [url=http://www.pingpong-online.de/images/big/13005-construction-c-11-eitech-eitech-2012-eitech-truck-8773.jpg'>link[/url'> I am looking for metal and not plastic. When we were kids we had meccano and I remember building cranes, Ferris wheels, transport you name it. I have looked in ToyStore and Borders toy section, Geant and C4, but can only find plastic. Haven't been to ToysRUs yet, but don't want to trek up there unless they have it. I am looking to buy my LO a summer toy for doing well at school this year. Anyone seen any on their travels? TIA :) <em>edited by Alismum on 25/05/2013</em>

Ive been Lucid dreaming since a very, very long time and I love it. I have never had sleep paralysis but here is a link to great info on the subject as it's closely tied to Lucid dreaming. [url=http://www.world-of-lucid-dreaming.com/sleep-paralysis.html'>link[/url'> Ecochic, that's a very interesting link :) Mind you not something you would wanna look at before you go to bed (little ugly fellow sat on the lady pic) ETA: Dogcatcher, just seen your post below, and wanted to say sorry to hear about your mum and brother. I have heard so many stories like yours (re: astral travel), same happened with my BIL. He had a vivid dream at the same time as his mum was having a heart attack and dying in the hospital, he was with her in his dream and she gave him a message to do something for her (which he has). <em>edited by Alismum on 20/05/2013</em>

I remember having sleep paralysis once. I went to stay with my Dad for a while whilst my mum was in hospital ( around 18 years ago) and in the early hours of the morning, I could hear what sounded like my mother frantically rattling the letter box and shouting my name through it, and I couldn't move and felt half awake but as if someone was pressing on my chest and wouldn't let me up, I remember feeling very afraid. Sadly I was awoken with news from the hospital that my mother had a devastating stroke during the early hours of the morning (around the same time as my sleep paralysis strangely), and I never got chance really to speak to her again. I often wonder if she was trying to tell me something through the airwaves. I did think it might have been a supernatural occurrence at the time, even though I'm not particularly superstitious or religious, but I did research afterwards and found a logical explanation for it. I never had another episode after this. Will remember the touching the roof of mouth with tongue if it happens again.

I would look into why they are not hungry in the morning and what they've eaten and at what time the night before. You should wake up hungry after all those hours. It is such an important meal. I don't know how they can function without a decent breakfast. If they're hungry then they should be less fussy. I wouldn't give sausages very often as they are processed. I don't know where you can get good quality butcher sausages here but I'd love to know! Birchermuesli is good and it's soft so easy to eat. Oats, natural yoghurt, quality sugar free apple juice and grated apples soaked overnight. Top with berries. My child, now 18, has never managed to eat breakfast till at least an hour after she has got out of bed. The earlier she rises, the comparatively later she eats. It's nothing to do with when and what she's eaten the night before, it's to do with the fact she is not a happy early riser and can't stomach any food till 8.00am at the earliest. Simpleasabc, I am exactly the same as your daughter. I need an hour or so to wake up, can't eat straight away. I never had breakfast before I went to work either, I used to eat when I arrived. I give my eldest cereal and my youngest has a slice of buttered toast with honey, and a glass of milk. I would find it hard to do a cooked breakfast before school (like some of the others) as we are limited for time in a morning as bus leaves at 6.30am. If the schools adopt a 9am or 10am start then I will make more of an effort to do something more nutritious. :) What about buying a few of those cereal bars in different flavours, the oat ones and seeing if she will eat one in a morning.

Sim, your post goes to show how everyone is soooo different. I got a Samsung galaxy as a gift nad gave up omit instantly. Not even 5 hours of use. I hate it. No way I will ever get my head around it. It is soooo busy and so not user friendly to me! All my friends, my sister and hubby have an iPhone and although I have said I don't like them and would never buy one, I must say I love them compared to the Samsung![b'> I am very, very happy with my basic 100dh Nokia phone ;) I can text with my eyes closed. It does everything I need my phone to do, and then I have my iPad for everything else.[/b'> But I have my 2 sisters and best friends abroad and they hate me cause I don't have what's app ;) just been looking at th e different options and looks like I will buy the Nokia c3 01 ;) very old school with a bit of new :) Irooni, exactly the same with me. I have a cheapo phone now perfect for texting (what more does a girl need ;) ). and a laptop. My son has a blackberry that needs charging every few hours cos it is overloaded with apps. I only charge my phone up once a week. Isn't the Nokia 100AED the most popular phone now?, I read somewhere that it is, that folks are reverting back to bog standard gsms rather than these fancy phones with tonnes of apps that need charging every hour or so. <em>edited by Alismum on 13/05/2013</em>

A friend of a friend is working in a hospital in Jeddah and she is pregnant. Her BF is promising to marry her, but she is afraid that the authorities figure out that she was already 3 months gone. Should they get married overseas? What would happen to her if they were to find out? She needs to get out of KSA ASAP, and if she wants any chance of returning, the guy better marry her. I am sure in KSA they are much stricter than here. She better go home now. To add, [b'>I have to do a medical and blood test before marriage[/b'>, and if she has to do the same, they could easily figure out. Why women (and men of course) keep getting themselves in this situation, I don't know. Please advise her to leave KSA. edited by Marroosh on 10/05/2013 seriously ?? what for ?? Nothing to be surprised about Pikachu, it's common practice here and other GCC countries to do medical check ups before marriage. Isn't it to do with inherited diseases, especially thalassemia, which is quite prevalent in this region. To the OP, I agree with the others, tell her not to leave it to chance, leave asap.

We spend around 600 or so a week (for 2 adults, 2 kids). We eat lots of fruit n veg as well (all local). I cook everything from scratch now (have bought reddies (M&S, Iceland) in the past, especially when I worked). I used Oxo cubes in a lot of my recipes. I found bolognese ones :) we eat curries (I had a maid from Nepal who showed me how a few years ago), biryani garlic muchrooms chinese dishes (fried rice or noodles) various persian stews Meat and potato pie stew and dumplings shepherds pie bolognese chicken in various sauces I make myself with rice, or roast potatoes strogonof chili con carne fish in sauce with rice carbonara with meat or prawns kebabs I am very lucky that there are no fussy eaters in my place, as I only cook one meal at dinnertime (although if I'm cooking curry I cook it in two pans, one without chillis for the kids). ETA I do have stocked cupboards with herbs (persian, indian, italian), spices and lots of pulses, so I don't need to buy these on a weekly basis, only meat and veg. <em>edited by Alismum on 07/05/2013</em>

Camelicious and Camelait are the ones they have in the supermarkets. I buy it all the time for my 6yro, he loves it and drinks nothing else. They have Strawberry, Saffron, Cardamon, Chocolate, Date, Strawberry and Rose flavours and regular plain. He had Camelait saffron tonight (250ml) 55kcal per 100ml, 2.5g protein. I have tasted the milk, a bit sweeter than normal milk but very nice. <em>edited by Alismum on 05/05/2013</em>

Let a 3 year old into a mens toilet unsupervised anywhere in the world, No way, no way!!!!! Not on your nellie. Up to about 9 or 10 and then i would stand outside the mens with strict instructions to scream and run if approached. Lolacat - my DS is turning 9 soon and he has started to question me when it comes to the toilet. When he insists that he's going to the Mens Loo, I stand outside like a stalker and scream out his name at least 5 times ti make sure he answers. How come no-one has brought up the scarier side of things? Or it's probably just me being paranoid but I could never leave willfully, my kids with anyone to watch over them while asleep - man or woman. I have huge trust issues to put it bluntly, and with so many stories of babies and little children coming to harm while under the watch of a nanny/maid I can only be certain they're looked after as I want it done if I am the one doing it. Besides they grow too soon, and sleep times are the best times to enjoy watching their innocent little faces asleep. I agree Redrec, I would feel very uncomfortable having a maid sleep with my children. I think having your child sleep with you on occasions is something precious, to feel them snuggle up to you, their little warm body curled up against you. I personally wouldn't have my children doing that with anyone else that wasn't family. Also what with all the media coverage of late about maids harming children in their care, I would be very reluctant to trust a maid to sleep with my children in the same bed. At the moment my LO is in our bedroom anyway, as we have a huge bedroom and he has his bed in the far corner of it. Time is so precious, in a blink of an eye they are all grown up, and those moments are gone forever. My eldest is 16 now and I miss those times when he used to snuggle up next to me in bed. Saying all this, I had a lovely maid from Nepal for a year whilst my youngest was one, and she would have been happy to do it, she said so. In her previous employment she slept in the same room as the two children on the floor next to their beds. <em>edited by Alismum on 02/05/2013</em>

I was reading that the recent rainy weather is partly due to 'cloud seeding' (enhancing rainfall) in the UAE. Very interesting, must admit I had never heard of cloud seeing before. OK tips on weeding. How do you weed someone out who is in the friendship circle but you just have had enough of and don't want to see any more due to various reasons below. Stop calling them? Distance yourself? I don't fancy a huge showdown but I am really tired of the antics. I have tried distancing and I just get message after call and end up being pinned down to meet at some point. I don't want to be mean but some people do not bring good vibes and I want out of the friendship. You could email them a link to this thread ;)

Sorry ladies This is an old thread from 2012 I reinstated to mention the research on mushrooms and vitamin D recently in the news. Here's another article on it. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/04/130422132801.htm [i'>Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have discovered evidence that ingesting mushrooms which have been exposed to ultraviolet light and contain vitamin D2, are a good source of vitamin D that can improve the vitamin D status of healthy adults. They found ingesting mushrooms containing vitamin D2 was as effective in raising and maintaining a healthy adult's vitamin D status as ingesting a supplement that contained either vitamin D2 or vitamin D3," [/i'> Make sure you get your mushrooms out in the sun :)

[u'>Mushrooms can provide as much vitamin D as supplements if you put them in the sun before you eat them[/u'> [i'>Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine found eating sun-exposed mushrooms can be as effective at boosting and maintaining vitamin D levels as taking a pill. We started out with HSBC - absolutely disastrous and even more difficult trying to get rid of them. We are now with Emirates NBD and are very happy with their product and service. Can't recommend Emirates and more. Exactly the same situation for us. I would recommend NBD as well. If you have priority banking with them they give you a book of privileges (basically a voucher book with discounts for various services/shops) that's the only perk I know :)

I don't have a MIL (will have one soon though) and our communication won't be easy. We simple don't speak each others language (my Arabic is close to zero lol), plus we will be quite far away in different countries. Anyone had this kind of language barrier with in laws? Marroosh, yes I was in this situation for many years, and I smiled and nodded a lot. A Scottish friend of mine who could speak Farsi fluently told me that whatever you do, don't learn to speak the language, else you will find yourself in the middle of lots of situations that you wish you weren't, and when I learned to speak my husbands language I realised what she said was absolutely true ;) edited by Alismum on 11/04/2013 Really? lol. Well I will have to learn Arabic properly as I want our future kids to be fluent. Of course Dh will speak Arabic with them, but I will be living in a place where Arabic is the accepted language, not like here where everyone speaks English. You will pick up Arabic in no time then. Have a look at Youtube for learning Arabic, there are lots of good and easy videos. When my little boy was studying for his last exams he revised from Youtube, and he got an A* for Arabic, I am very proud of him since none of us speak Arabic much. I have learned some Arabic from the youtube videos myself as well whilst studying with my son and already picked up a bit of vocabulary, and I can read a bit as well (although not understand what I'm reading if that makes sense). I never had any problems with my MIL (bless her she's gone now), and I was accepted into the family very well, so I guess I am very lucky and consider myself very fortunate indeed. <em>edited by Alismum on 11/04/2013</em>

Cut through the park (opposite the entrance) and then turn right, go left over the bridge to the traffic lights and Rimal is right in front of you. Take the lift or stairs up to Plaza level and then turn right, Ramada Plaza is in Bahar, right near Al Maya Supermarket. <em>edited by Alismum on 09/04/2013</em>

Happy for her to drink if she gets herself a licence Are maids allowed alcohol licenses? Don't think so?.... You have to earn a certain salary to be able to get a licence and it has to be signed by the employer so i doubt it Criteria: Non-Muslim, over 21 and salary of 3,000+ (so perhaps this would exempt a lot of maids who earn less than this)

By the way, all the tutoring and homework has paid off - she won first place in Grade One. She starts Grade Two after the vacation and is so excited about it. Well done to your daughter Mrs B, what a great achievement :)

What a fabulous idea!!!! May I use your idea? What sort of things do you have in the bag? I would love to reward my DD like this. She really works hard and is so proud of her achievements. Her current reward is: today is her last exam for the end of her academic year - her grandmother arrives for a 3 month visit tonight. She is so excited. She has new clothes, hennaed hands and feet, and clothes laid out ready for the airport trip tonight to meet her. She loves her grandmother more than anyone in the world - she spent for the five years of her life in the house with her grandmother when she was stuck there because of the fighting. Mrs B, did your daughter see her Grandma? bet she was so happy. Just another thing that I do with my little one that your daughter may appreciate. I have a piggy bank/money box and every time he behaves or does good school work, I give him a few coins for it. When it is full (it holds about 100 in one dirhams), I let him keep half for a toy/game and the other half he puts in the charity/alms boxes in the malls. I tell him that he is helping those less fortunate than himself with his charitable contribution, and he gets a toy as well :) <em>edited by Alismum on 29/03/2013</em>

Never heard of goldfish surviving without food for a year. As a child we always had goldfish and some of them lasted for a few years, although we never overfed them which I think is one of the main reasons for them dying quickly. Once when my mother was cleaning out the fish tank, one of the goldfish escaped down the plug hole and she ran outside with a bowl and lo and behold the fish came out of the drain pipe. Another time we woke up in the morning to find my goldfish lying on it's side and I was upset that it had died, so my mother picked it up and started stroking it gently with her fingers for a few minutes, and it came to life again and lasted for months after that. I really thought my mother was a miracle worker after I witnessed this as a child. Egg: We won a lot of our goldfish from the fair as well :) edited by Alismum on 29/03/2013 Thats a lovely memory (I really thought my mother was a miracle worker after I witnessed this as a child.), the kids won our hercules on hook a duck at the fair and i was thinking oh god no how can i tell the kids they only live for a few days, i was preparing myself to tell them the next day when it died that it had gone to heaven but the little blighter lasted 12 years, he was a tough nut, we attempted to get more fish to join him but he murdered every one of them so we just let him be. He eventually died when we were away on holiday my dad saved his body until we came back so the kids could say farewell, they were gutted, even though they were a teens :-) We won a few of ours on Hook a Duck as well, and throw a ball into a bucket. They would let you choose your goldfish from a row of plastic bags. 12 years is a long time for a fairground goldfish, I think our longest was around 6 years.
