Hi Gail, I am 21 as well ;) I would recommend you look at apartments in Marina or JBR. Restaurants and other amenities on your doorstep, close to the beach, great for couples as well as families. As for jobs, did you check the classifieds on here? What type of job would you be looking for?, perhaps one of the other ladies can point you in the right direction, I think a few of the ladies here work for recruitment agencies. edited by Alismum on 27/03/2013

So ladies do you remember most of that stuff then. I remember about 95% I had a buckaroo :) All of it, collecting rubbers, the whole shebang :-) We had a telly just like that :-) We did and you had to feed 50p's into the back of it, oh my life ;-) We did as well :) I remember the 50p tv with the box at the back and turning the knob when you put your money in. It was from Rediffusion I think. You got about 4 hours TV for 50pence. ETA I think they were free rental and the guy used to come and collect the money once a fortnight. edited by Alismum on 27/03/2013

Why not? AED 29 may be used for something more useful. Not everyone has AED 29 to just throw out. like **like** We should remember that we are a very, very privileged group of women - maybe 29/- is only a fancy cup of coffee for us, but for many, it is the family meal (for several days) ...... So true, this amount of money could be a days pay for some of the low paid workers here.

Fiona, Do you have a facility on your phone that you can block a particular number? I had a caller (from Bangladesh) that wouldn't let up, called me early mornings, sometimes 10 times. In the end I sent an sms to him asking him to stop calling and he smsed me back saying his brother who just arrived in UAE to work gave my number by mistake.

lol GrannyMcMoany I was down there Friday with my two and it was loud (I was near MarinaScape park and could hear it), and to top it off there were groups cruising down the marina on their yachts with full blast Gangham Style blaring out. Not something you see every day, well not where I come from anyway :). Good news is that the last day for the festival is Friday. ETA, the festival was good though, I really enjoyed some of the acts. edited by Alismum on 25/03/2013

Hi Mrs Evans, Don't be afraid. When we moved here it was summertime as well (we moved from a cold and wet Europe and survived ;). Yes it will be hot, but there are many places to go that will have air conditioning. All shops will be open and during Ramadan they open later as well (til 12-1am). It is a bit quieter but I have yet to see a mass exodus, and I have been here 6 years now.

Tell him to drop you off outside Marina Mall, then go to ground floor (near Waitrose) and walk through to the promenade at the back. Also I think Bus Number 37 (feeder bus) goes from JLT (metro Station) to Marina (not sure where it would drop you off mind you, says Marina Tower on the schedule??? Alternatively you could catch the metro from JLT Metro Station (I am assuming you are near this one) to Marina Station and walk to Marina Mall (about 5/10 mins or so). edited by Alismum on 23/03/2013

Any suggestions as to what we can do till 4pm? As the shows dont start till then. Any kid friendly places where kids are happy but contained in that area? I don't suppose you could take them on their bikes down there could you (or is that too difficult for you??) then they could ride up and down the promenade. I took mine on bikes yesterday from JBR. Also there are a few parks down there under the bridges, with slides, swings and roundabouts. edited by Alismum on 23/03/2013

Ginnee, just to say that there was a great vibe around there and loads of kids. Also vans with snacks. We saw this guy (one of the acts - around 7pm) and he was hilarious [u'>The Brucey Show (Australia)[/u'> [i'>Australia’s cheekiest son is making his way to Dubai. Bringing his telltale style of laidback comedy intermingled with some unusual circus tricks, just like the rest of the world; Dubai will succumb to his charming ways. Come and see him again and again as there’s always something different from show to show. With fantastic magic, whip cracking and the highest ball catch on his head, people can’t stop talking about this guy. “Best street show I’ve ever seen!” - Brucey’s Mum “Dag” - Bruceys brother “Brucey, ha, he was a mistake….” - Brucey’s Dad Come and Enjoy.[/i'>

I buy Al Marai milk, it's the creamiest imo. There's a large Choithrams in the Marina (Dec Tower) and they have a nice selection of meat and fruit/vegetables A wee bit pricier than some of the other places (eg. Lulu), but cheaper than Spinneys and Waitrose [url=http://www.timeoutdubai.com/gallery/29502-dubais-cheapest-supermarkets'>Dubais Cheapest Supermarkets[/url'> [url=http://www.timeoutdubai.com/gallery/34020-dubai-supermarket-price-comparison'>Dubai Supermarket Price Comparison[/url'>

India is a place I would have loved to have visited in the past, but would be wary at the moment. If you do go, like some of the others have said stay in touristy spots and don't venture to the outskirts of the city. Also I would avoid taking public transport if you do go (especially trains) I have seen many documentaries/programs on India and in the trains you are packed in like sardines (after a stampede to get on) and what I saw was that the women were groped, no matter if an OH was present or not. edited by Alismum on 23/03/2013

Fatima, Put a wanted ad on Dubizzle, or here [url=http://sharjahcity.olx.ae/books-magazines-cat-215'>link[/url'> I think many of the schools here are using these books for Islamic study classes, and I often see people advertising second hand school text books for sale on there, especially come end of the school year. My son is on Level 1 at the moment. I think the books in the schools are subsidized and cheaper than the shops?? I also notice that Scholars International School (near you) have each set (new) for 100AED (probably workbook and textbook), would that be too much for you? Did you know you don't need coins for parking meters? Text 7275 Plate Number - SPACE - AREA CODE (on parking meter) SEND You will get an immediate reply saying when your parking expires. Ten minutes before it expires you will receive an SMS asking if you want to extend. OR you can use your NOL card (Metro/bus) - you can put it in the parking machine instead of coins. edited by Tattie Bogle on 20/03/2013 Tattie is this for all parking meters and do they automatically take it from telephone credit, how does it work? What if you don't have much telephone credit left?

Snugs I agree with you. In my sons old school in Europe they used to have a 3 day camping trip that was included in the fees. Now he comes home with letters re trips to Africa, US, SE Asia that cost an arm and a leg. When he brings a letter home that states, "your child has expressed an interest in going to Timbuktu" I gasp at the price then ask my son if he has saved up enough pocket money to be able to afford it :) . In our day it was Style Mill and Jodrell Bank yawn fest and we took sandwiches and a drink :-) lol Saralou, we went on a school trip down a coal mine once from our school.

I don't think it's much of a hardship either. I take my kids all over on the metro, especially in the summer hols. I give my little one water before he gets on the metro normally. Some people fast during the summer (if that's when Ramadan falls) and have no water until evening, so half hour/1 hour journey is nothing.

I have seen Barberries in Union Coop. Irooni in one of her past threads mentioned an Iranian grocery shop in Satwa that sells all these things, but I can't find a post with the name or address of the shop. MrsB I think it's hard during the week to find time to play out every day anyway. Both mine have had exams this week, I've just finished helping my eldest son revise for his GCSEs and my little boy has had Year 1 (second term) tests. It's been all work and no play in our house for the last week :) It is hard to find time for everything and I work too which makes it harder. It is so nice when they achieve and , as a young student, year on etc, they get so excited when they get good marks.[b'> They can't wait to come home to tell/show you.[/b'> Insha'allah all goes well for their exams and the vacation will be a good one!!!! This is true, I have a bag in the cupboard which I have filled with little items (books, small toys, crafts) and when my little boy comes home with a good mark for his spelling test I let him choose a present from it. Today he ran to me with his spelling test score, bless. What a fabulous idea!!!! May I use your idea? What sort of things do you have in the bag? I would love to reward my DD like this. She really works hard and is so proud of her achievements. Her current reward is: today is her last exam for the end of her academic year - her grandmother arrives for a 3 month visit tonight. She is so excited. She has new clothes, hennaed hands and feet, and clothes laid out ready for the airport trip tonight to meet her. She loves her grandmother more than anyone in the world - she spent for the five years of her life in the house with her grandmother when she was stuck there because of the fighting. Each time I go shopping I am on the look out for little items to put in the present bag, only things for around 5-10AED. Little books (reading/puzzle/sticker books), cars, nicknacks (for your daughter you could get little jewellry items or girly things). I found some little plants that are in a box in C4 for around 5AED (it's only grass really), the plant pots are sheep or other items and the children can grow their own plants. Geant and C4 sometimes have craft sort of things, saw lots in Geant last week, little painting sets, make a piggy bank, make and paint nameplates for bedroom door. MAX in Ibn Battuta and Daiso also have little bits. I started doing it because my little boy took a dislike to writing and spelling and I wanted to encourage him a bit. I did the same thing with my eldest when he was this age as well for good school work.. edited by Alismum on 18/03/2013

Wow MrsB, 2 hours a night homework for Grade 1. My Grade 1 (Brit curriculum) son gets about an hour a week if that. Suzie my eldest used to be in an IB school and did around 2-3 hours an evening from Grade 7+. ETA he did his own homework but I helped him prepare for tests. edited by Alismum on 05/03/2013 I think as Spongemonkey commented, a lot of it is cultural - Pakistan is still in the rote learning phase rather than the communicative experiential learning that the USA and UK curriculums enjoy. There is merit with both and perhaps the best aspects of both methodologies combined would be ideal. With rote learning, students do not develop problem solving skills until much later unfortunately so this is something I try to work on at home. However, we must prepare our children for the situation in which they will be attending high school and university - the UAE is not our permanent home, and, in our case, it is the rote learning methodology of Pakistan. Sorry Mrs B only just seen this, also sounds like Grade 1 of BC and Pakistan are different in that Grade 1 is for 5-6 year olds in BC. I think Pakistan Grade 1 must be at a higher level since it is for 8 year olds. Now I understand why there's more homework. Sounds like you are doing a grand job helping your daughter. Thanks for the explanation of the different systems.

Lol 'Prude and Proud' could be a catchy name for a business venture, one that makes more conservative clothing, or swimsuits for those of us not wanting to put our bits on display in skimpy bikinis. Even thinking about brazillian waxes makes me blush (haha), my upbringing I guess :). I feel sorry for the women who have to do this job, they do not get paid enough imo, not a job I could see myself doing, nor massaging bare bottoms.

No way I'd remove my undies for a massage! Also during a Moroccan bath. The lady gave me disposable knickers. No thanks lol, I wear shorts and a top. Some parts of my body are not to be seen, not even by another woman. But I guess any well trained beautician or masseuse knows how to respect that and work around it. Then I'll skip the bum-massage :p Same here, I am a prude, and I don't care whether the lady working in the spa would think it or not :) no brazillian wax or bum massage for me lol
