Both mine were born in Europe and all children were given Vitamin D drops until age 2. I gave both mine it. OP I would have thought it would be sufficient getting Vitamin D from the sun as well, but perhaps it would be too hot to take your baby out during the day. Despite the lovely sunshine, I've read that UAE has one of the highest Vitamin D deficiency rates in the world.(60 per cent of men and around 80 per cent of women in the Emirates are deficient in the vitamin, so a recent article states.) edited by Alismum on 09/03/2013

The link shows a nice picture with a guitar, furniture, ornaments :) http://www.dubai-fleamarket.com/ If it's old junk (shoes, clothes, DVDs) then I might give it a miss, I have enough junk in my place already :) [url=http://www.eurocheapo.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/fleamarket-top.jpg'>paris flea market[/url'> [url=http://www.carboot.com/boot_sale_items/images/boot_318_IMG_2738.JPG'>car boot sale[/url'> edited by Alismum on 06/03/2013

Has anyone been to this before? What kind of things were they selling? I went to the one at Stargate soon after arriving and it was a huge anti-climax. Basically old clothes, DVDs and some miscellaneous junk. Wouldn't do it again so wondering if this one is likely to be any better. BMAP I haven't been to one here, but I thought there might be antiques or similar, perhaps some arabic ornaments, rugs you name it. The flea markets in the past that I have been to were full of nicknacks. Or do you think it will be more on the lines of a car boot sale.

Callum you will be fine. We lived in Northern Europe before here and I was worried that I wouldn't be able to stand the heat, but when we came I decided that I will have the following daily mantra and that is "this weather will not keep us in" and it never has. My LO was one when we came and I don't have a car, but we still get out and about in the summer months, in fact we go all over. We do the same things as we would in the Xmas hols but later in the day.

Amelia, so in the Geant car park, I have seen some doorways that perhaps lead to the upstairs (one far right hand side of the door), near the trolley area. I guess it will be busy on Saturday and there will be sign posts, I am nipping there tomorrow so will have a look.

I have never been, but might have a look. Do you know where it is, had a look [url=http://www.dubai-fleamarket.com/ '>here[/url'>and it mentions Tunisia car parking rooftop / P3 next to food court. Where is roof top parking, isn't IB only one level?

We will be holidaying in Dubai as well :) We are used to the heat in summer now, nothing keeps us in. During the month of Ramadan when it falls in the summer months, I make it a special month and we turn our days upside down, get up later in the day (almost lunch time) and go to bed late at night. A lot of our activities we do late afternoon onwards. We even go to the beach some evenings and have a couple of evenings where we go midnight walking on the beach. edited by Alismum on 06/03/2013

Wow MrsB, 2 hours a night homework for Grade 1. My Grade 1 (Brit curriculum) son gets about an hour a week if that. Suzie my eldest used to be in an IB school and did around 2-3 hours an evening from Grade 7+. ETA he did his own homework but I helped him prepare for tests. edited by Alismum on 05/03/2013

Is your hair long? Probably this won't be easy to do if you have luscious long locks, but when I first came here I had unruly hair past my shoulder and I lost it by the handful in the first 3-4 years or so. I could literally put my hand through it and my hand would be full of hair, my floor was full of hair and after a shower the plug was blocked with my hair, I was afraid of washing it. I really thought it was down to the water quality, heat etc. (I go out in the sun a lot, so not due to lack of sun on my hair). However in the last year I have taken the plunge and had it cut in a short layered bob and now I lose hardly any, and am sure it's down to the fact that it's short now, before it was heavier and put more stress on the roots. Having it cut short made all the difference and it's become much thicker. edited by Alismum on 22/02/2013

And don't forget if you had a teenage sister and got in the bath afterwards there was floating hair everywhere where she'd shaved her legs in the bath. I personally don't worry about pooh, my family had to shovel it (literally) had to take it in the evening and bury it in the garden, and we are all still here with no real issues (mind you when I was born, we had the luxury of a toilet ;) ) edited by Alismum on 21/02/2013

Yes but we didn't live in a country with temperatures of 30 - 40 degrees for most of the year. We didn't want to bath because it was too ****** COLD - no central heating and a " shower " - what was that ? A rubber hose that attached to the taps and always blew off with the water pressure! :D What era was this? 1920's? No - Scotland 1960s and 1970s ! :D Chester early 1970's also, we had an emersion heater, 4 kids and 2 adults, [b'>we shared bath water with a sibling ( i imagine the comments i will get on that)[/b'> due to the hot water running out and having to wait for it to fill up and heat up again Oh i miss the good old days Not from me Louise, I know exactly what you mean ;) We had an immersion heater as well. lol I remember those rubber shower attachment thingys that used to leak from the sides when you turned the water up. edited by Alismum on 21/02/2013

When we were growing up we used to get a bath every Sun (as the only girl I used to get to go in the water first).I remember starting high school and having to plead with my mum to switch the hotwater on so that I could wash my hair midweek. We had no shower so it was done with a plastic cup over the sink. I think when girls go to high school peer pressure and the need to shower cos of hormones makes them start to shower every day. When younger I personally don't think it does them any harm not to shower every day and is prob better for them especially with the harshness of the water out here. Feefmick, same in our family, a bath once a week on a Sunday. There were 7 of us, so imagine 7 kids having a bath twice a day lol At the moment mine have a quick shower before bed 'most' school nights and a long bath on a weekend. edited by Alismum on 19/02/2013

The chief of the traffic police in his Q&A last week said that drivers should not stop at zebra crossings for pedestrians [b'>Reader question: [/b'>Is there a law for giving way to people [b'>Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein: [/b'>[i'>"We have some zebra crossing controlled by traffic signal. But I have to agree with you, we have some zebra crossing not controlled by traffic signal. In the past, we were encouraging people to stop at the zebra crossing, but there were some people who stopped and some people didn’t, which was leading to accidents. We had people and children who died in such accidents. It is like a trap. So do not stop at zebra crossings if there are no traffic lights. We are demanding the RTA to have traffic lights on all zebra crossings. We have to clarify, I am against any uncontrolled zebra crossing, because it causes a dilemma. Does he cross … Is it permitted for him to cross. As a driver, if you see a pedestrian about to cross, just let him cross along with signaling other lanes to stop. As a pedestrian, if you see a lot of cars on the road just don’t cross. Wait for the road to clear.[/i'>" edited by Alismum on 18/02/2013

My father is a very educated man andnot supersitious. But he is convinced that thisis medically wrong! ;) I googled it to find out, and someone said it's build up of yeast in the stomach from bacteria in the milk and fish which can lead to an underproduction of melanin???. Others have said the tale originated from Pakistan or Arabian peninsula???? and it was because they drank unpasteurized milk in those parts and under cooked fish, which contained bacteria. My BIL swears he has seen many people walk around with white patchy skin due to eating fish and yogurt together.

Someone on another forum has said that bacteria from the fish and milk can cause build-up of fungus (yeast) in the stomach which can lead to stopping of melanin production?????? Some say it's in a Hadith as well???? and I saw it mentioned on a forum talking about ayurvedic medicine. Must admit that I was told this by my MIL donkeys years ago, and am not a fish lover personally but just lately when BIL mentioned it again, thought I would find out if there was any weight to it.

I know what you mean Anemon, you can tend to feel obliged to have the blow dry as well as the cut. At home a cut and blow dry was an all in price, and rarely did you leave with wet hair, but here they itemize everything. I generally say that I am limited for time, or I say at the cash desk cut only. No worries it's not rude at all (or cheap), I have seen lots of ladies come in whilst I was having my hair cut and say they just want the cut only, it's pretty normal over here to just have a cut or colour, and walk out with it wet. Tell them you are on your way for a swim :)

Depends what you want. If you want a persian carpet, I have seen a few in the price range you mentioned on Dubizzle. Ask Irooni, she'll know if it's value for money. As for the Hatta carpets, I bought a large persian-look-a-like carpet for 200AED (after haggling ;) ) when we went on a visa run a couple years back now. The carpet shops are right near the Hatta border mind you and a bit of a trek, but you can get a very good deal :). edited by Alismum on 29/01/2013

Oh you are right Amelia if there are 5 appts sharing one area it could be a fire hazard. Our building was notified this time last year with the circular (before the Tamweel fire) and they only checked for about a month after the notice (if that). Pity they didn't make a storage cupboard for each appt in the communal areas in JBR, there is definitely room for it, the area outside the back door is huge. Also there doesn't appear to be an area for bikes that I am aware of unlike in our last building in the marina which had an allocated spot for bikes in the underground parking. When my eldest had his bike, I went and asked JBR management where he could park it and they said he could tie it to the rubbish skip in the parking area!!! OP what about the balcony, could you put it there under a plastic sheet? edited by Alismum on 27/01/2013

Same in our building last year, give them a month and then put it out there again ;) Ayzzy it's not a corridor, there's a huge amount of space (as much as a studio appt). I wouldn't mind it if my neighbour had a stroller there near the back door, it's not blocking anything. In fact my next door neighbour threw her OH out about 8 months ago and 2 of his cases are still near her back door :) I have my little boys bike in the laundry room. edited by Alismum on 27/01/2013

I can't understand why you would want to take your 15 year old to a movie that has been censored for adults only at 18+ - it seems to be sending the wrong message - "it is OK to flaunt the law". didn't most of us do this as teens? Many of the 18's here are 15's in the UK - hence why I don't see it is a problem for my DDs. We used to sneak in, not for anything rude etc it was part of growing up and ARGO should not be an 18 in my opinion It was a rite of passage. I remember getting 'dolled up' as a 15/16 year old with my friends and we went to see Porʞys :) ETA: It was a rubbish movie imo but the thrill of looking 18 made it worthwhile. edited by Alismum on 23/01/2013

TOLB, I think the aim is to go 'around' 12-16 hours without food on the fast days. So you could eat your 500 calories little and often throughout the day but stop after dinner time (5ish) which gives at least 12 hours before your breakfast. This is how I have understood it, although I expect there would be more 'health' benefits if you ate all your calories at breakfast time and went a full day until the next morning, perhaps some of the other ladies would know, I have not done much research only watched the program as well. As far as I am aware when he did the 5:2 plan Dr Moseley ate breakfast of 300 calories then black and green tea during the day and then a 300 meal at dinner time (from one of the sites given by October I think). Here's an interesting site for those ladies doing the 5:2 with meal plans http://www.getthegloss.com/article/the-5-2-diet-plan-week-one http://www.getthegloss.com/article/the-5-2-diet-plan-week-two edited by Alismum on 19/01/2013

Coco with only 500 calories on your 'fast' days you are bound to get hunger pangs, but they come in waves and they pass. You could try drinking green tea, or Bovril or similar to help you cope a bit better throughout the day. You do get used to it though after doing it a few weeks of doing it. Well done! this sounds great but need a push to try it!... :\: Tattie, come on you can do it, giving you a wee push [img'>http://www.wtv-zone.com/rosebuds/graphics/smiley/t-z/weight-losing_ani.gif[/img'>

I'm a bit confused , do you fast for 2 consecutive days in a row, or can you fast any two days? I thought Mon & Wed would be ideal for me.... Also, if you exercise on that day and burn say 200 calories, would/could you add it to the calories available to consume? :) Coco, I read that it's two days non-consecutive, so Mon and Wed would be fine. As for the exercise and addition of calories to fasting days, I suppose it depends on whether you are following this plan to lose weight or as a way to slow down the aging process. If it's for dieting purposes then I suppose in theory you could eat an extra 200 calories on the fasting days, but if you are dong the plan to reduce IGF levels (which the research in the program has shown could protect the body against some diseases) then I would suggest you don't go above 500 on your fasting days, as the idea is to radically limit your calorie intake on these days.
