I really like the Lavender site, the recipes look lovely. Lou, I didn't make anything special for the fast days. I ate fruit during the day and meat and veg at night, avoided carbs really on those days. I personally found it easier for me to fast during the day and eat with the kids at night so I kept the bulk of my calories for the evening meal. With your situation at work perhaps it would be best to eat little and often during the day, have a few low calorie snacks available. Here are some under 50s I found. Also did you know a cup of Bovril is about 10 calories [url=http://www.womansday.com/health-fitness/diet-weight-loss/50-Best-Snacks-Under-50-Calories'>50 Best Snacks Under 50 Calories[/url'> [url=http://www.livestrong.com/article/433952-guide-to-50-calorie-snacks/'>50 calorie snacks[/url'> For those choosing to go for a 200-400 calorie meal a day, here are some lovely recipes from BBC Good Food [url=http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/content/recipes/healthy/200-400-cal/'>BBC Good Food 200-400-cal[/url'> also [url=http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/content/recipes/special-diets/under-200-calories/'>BBC Good Food under-200-calories[/url'> <em>edited by Alismum on 13/01/2013</em>

Lou you are gonna do fine. I think because you only have to 'suffer' ;) for 2 days, it's pretty easy, and if you overeat on one of your cut back days then you just move it to the next day without feeling guilty. I personally find diets difficult to stick to, I never measure food and I like my coffee and treats and I don't really want to deprive myself on a daily basis. I also hate the gym. I walk a lot but my idea of h3ll is being stuck in a gym. :) Good luck Lou, let us know how you get on. <em>edited by Alismum on 13/01/2013</em>

Hi Lou, IMHO this is the easiest diet/healthy eating plan by far that I have tried. You don't have to change eating habits vastly, or stick to a daily diet, you can eat normally with your family on weekends, and you don't need to have loads of willpower. Basically you only need to cut back your food to around 500 calories for two days a week, and those days you can choose, as long as they are not consecutive. I love my coffee so on my cutting back days I tend to have a banana for breakfast or something under 100 and a few cups of coffee throughout the day with skimmed milk I save the bulk of my calories for dinner time with my kids and eat meat and lots of veggies. You can adjust your eating times to suit you, lots of little snacks throughout the day or a bigger breakfast or bigger dinner. On my eating days I ate normally, I didn't cut back at all (even ate chocolate and other goodies) :) I used [url=http://www.myfitnesspal.com/'>my fitness pal[/url'> to track my calories on those days, and stuck to around 500 or 600. I have lost about a stone in about 5 weeks or so, without trying really. I noticed my jeans were a little bit slack after the first week. At the moment I am only doing a 6:1 as I don't really need to lose any more but want to carry on with it for health benefits. Here are some foods under 100 calories [url=http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/cookbooks.asp?cookbook=544760'>meals under 100 calories[/url'> [url=http://www.bodychef.com/Articles/100-snacks-under-100-calories'>snacks under 100 calories[/url'> [url=http://www.easyliving.co.uk/beauty/100-snacks-under-100-calories'>snacks under 100 calories[/url'>

Marsbar have you tried almond oil for eye wrinkles? I hardly use cream, only coconut and almond oil. Almond oil is pretty light and seems to work. Really cheap as well, a few dirhams a bottle :) edited by Alismum on 11/01/2013

If you invest in a good one, it may last 10-15 years. Really, in my experience it always pays of to go for a premium brand in white goods. I agree. We bought a Miele washing machine....the more expensive choice at the time. We use it several times a day and it is still going strong after nine years. Well worth the investment. And they have an experienced repair team. I had a Miele as well, best machine we ever bought, I had it 10 years and when we left Europe we sold it on for a good price as well. I had a Hotpoint here that lasted 18 months, worst one so far, now I have a second hand Siemens and I daren't say how long it's been going for fear of it packing up on me tomorrow ;), but it's been a long time.

Hello Alismum and October I'm also a 5:2er and plodding away at it merrily. It's great as a lifestyle and I managed to keep it up (sort of ) over Christmas! Finding it harder just now as I'm under the weather with a bug, but have managed to start introducing exercise too. Feeling a bit smug :) I found it quite easy tbh, also you can choose your fasting days to fit in with the rest of the family. I am doing Thur and Sun or Mon, am comfortable with my weight now though and am doing it to live longer and healthier :) . Good luck October, no I didn't join Facebook, can I look at the site without a facebook account, do you have a link?

I managed to lose a stone with the 5:2 diet over the last 5-6 weeks (I think it was Gerry who mentioned it last year). I am also doing it for health reasons as well after watching the Horizon programme 'Eat, Fast and Live longer'. Two days (not consecutive) of reduced calories (around 500) and the other Five eat normally. [url=http://vimeo.com/50912488'>link to Horizon Video[/url'> <em>edited by Alismum on 10/01/2013</em>

DB I am in JBR opposite Hilton and I don't hear the noise up here, but I was down there on the beach near Hilton with my two over the Xmas holidays and it was pretty bad noisewise. The Sheraton side might be quieter. I could nip down there tomorrow and have a listen for you. ETA oops meant Ritz Carlton side. <em>edited by Alismum on 09/01/2013</em>

I went to Dubai Mall yesterday with my two. The fountain area around the Burj is going to be spectacular, they have set it up and you could see all the props, but..... it was jam packed at 6.30pm for the fountain show, the busiest I've seen it for a while, lots of tourists. The metro was busy as well, as they have opened the bridge between the metro station and the mall which is a real advantage. I personally wouldn't take my kids up there tonight, but if you are brave enough then I'm sure it's gonna be a good show. I would take the metro and leave the car at home, mind you if you do probably would be best to buy a Gold card I think..:)

Alismum - how did you get there and which beach? I quite fancy it but don't fancy getting there before about 10pm as the kids will prob get bored etc. I don't want stuck in loads of traffic coming home either..we live out past AR. Feefmick I live in JBR and have a view of Atlantis from my window, so I am very lucky :) We could watch the fireworks from the window, but I do usually make the effort with the kids to get out and about on New Years Eve, as there's a lovely atmosphere down JBR. We just leave the house around 11pm, walk down JBR and then nip on the beach to watch the fireworks. I think from AR you would have to leave early, but JBR is usually buzzing and it's well worth it to do it once if you can (just for the experience). Otherwise nip over to the beach where Noddy suggested, around the Burj will be lovely, and less crowded. Also what about Global Village, that would be nearby you and not so far, there'll probably be something going on there... not the beach I know, but less driving, and no parking hassles.

Have to say though that this year will be different around JBR given that half of the beach has disappeared to make way for a shopping mall, so there may not be space for everyone.

We do the beach as well, parking can be difficult though, and now the car parks have turned into a building site, I imagine it will be very difficult to find a parking spot nearby. A couple of years ago the traffic was so bad, we celebrated new year in the car driving down JBR. Maybe you could park near the marina and walk, or come on metro or in taxi. It's a real community feel on the beach with the kids watching the fireworks. Also another idea would be to park in JLT in some of the outside parking spaces in the clusters without barriers and walk across the metro bridge. It is about 20-25 mins walk, but lots of people walked from JLT last year to celebrate down JBR and the weather is pleasant.

The message obviously didn't reach down to JBR! Roads at gridlock, plently of cars decorated, car horns tooting, loads of silly string and foam and lots of smiling faces. :) What time was this? I saw a bit of silly string and a few cars with decorations, but nothing on the scale of last year.

Have to be honest, JBR didn't have the same vibe this year. Last year (40th anniversary) there was a real buzz down there, market, activities, music, decorated cars. I dressed my kids up, but we were one of only a few that were waving flags, no music, only a few cars with decorations. This is our 5th year going down there, and this year was a bit of a let down I thought.

We've been here 5 years and I've never given our kids (ages 2-7) deworming tablets. To be honest, none of the peds, I've seen has ever recommended it... This is very interesting. I am not keen to start loading them up with unnecessary meds but if its harmless and should be done 2x a year, surprised doctors have never mentioned. How bizarre. Thanks for the info ladies! Xmasbaby, I've never given it twice a year myself, only once when my now 15 year old was about 2 (ped recommendation) and for my LO, once as well (couple months back when I suspected he might have pinworms due to itching). But I certainly will be more vigilant now I know what other symptoms to look for (thanks DR)

I need to ask a question - how on earth do you know if your toddler needs deworming medicine? Also in regards to another poster's statement of taking it regularly because of the sand? Does anyone else do this? This is the first I've heard of this and I've lived here for 4 years! Sobevan, Generally itchy bums. My youngest is 6, and he had an itchy bum a couple months back, not sure if it was pin worms but it didn't clear with cream, so I got the worm solution. Same with my eldest when he was young (toddler), we also took it back then as well, just in case. No it's not dangerous.

Not forgetting that you require written permission from your husband to leave the country with your children, and also his permission (NOC) if you wish to work. edited by Alismum on 22/11/2012 I've left the country on my own with my daughter and was not asked if I had any permission from anyone. She is 17, but that is still not considered the age of majority here. simpleasabc, I haven't had first hand experience of this, but some posters in the past have mentioned that they were asked on exiting the country (?) or an SMS was sent to their husband informing him, and so they always carried a no objection letter. Maybe someone who is better informed that myself would know the exact ruling here :)

Science - senses, characteristics of living things, light and dark Maths - measuring, handling data, time. English - To be able to write simple sentences and understand a small paragraph and answer a few questions Islamic Studies - learn first few pages of book on God is one, Searching for Allah All subjects have been listed on the timetable together with what will be tested and text books were sent home for revision. <em>edited by Alismum on 19/11/2012</em>

Always put your used tea leaves / open tea bags into pot plants as it does wonders to the soil. Ive put rooibos tea bags onto totally dead pot plants which have miraculously revived. Thanks for the heads up on the plants HB, I am trying to revive a plant of mine which I have almost killed, I over watered it and all the leaves have turned yellow and fallen off. Will try the tea.
