Oh Dear Gorobattie, looks like you and Amy (below thread) are in the same boat. Her maid ran away as well. http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=177653 Like the others have said, get yourself to immigration and report her absconded asap. You will probably lose the deposit money, which they will use to repatriate her if they find her. Just a quick question about this tea, which I'd never heard of til I read the article. Do all the Rooibos teas have the same sort of properties, I bought Earl Grey, but am not sure if that has the same sort of properties for lowering blood sugar as the Green tea (can't be sure from the article). Does anyone know? Too busy to do google research on it today :)

IMO whether the property is freehold or leasehold is sometimes not even really relevant. [b'>In reality, which of us is going to hand the property to our next generation? [/b'> Hopefully we will (God willing), we bought property here with our children in mind.

Dubaicat, I called EMAAR this morning and got the same answer as you, yes the land (and the villa) is owned by the purchaser. We were told the same when we bought the villa in 2007. When I first bought in Springs in 2003, though, it wasn't the case and we were told clearly by Emaar that laws allowing expatriates to own the land were coming soon, insha'allah ;). I remember thinking it was a bit ridiculous that developers could build houses and sell them to expats when the government hadn't even finalised laws allowing expats to own the land they sat on! DC We bought about 10 years ago as well, long before the freehold law for foreigners (everything was off plan and New Dubai wasn't built). I think what most of the ladies are saying here did apply before 2006, ie: land was leased in those days rather than owned (whilst waiting in anticipation for the land law), but I think now foreigners can own the actual plot of land (both villa and land it's on) in designated areas by decree of SM and we have been told the same by Emaar and Land Dept. This is why it surprised me what ChilliPepper said, but like you said earlier, one can ring 10 people up (even in the same office) and get 10 different answers :) edited by Alismum on 13/11/2012

Alismum. Emaar and my lawyer confirmed this. Thanks Chillipepper, were you told this after the law came out in 2006? So this would mean in effect you are the owner of the villa itself but Emaar is the actual owner of the land your villa is on, and you are leasing it from them. But this would be the same as it was prior to 2006, what is the point of the 2006 real estate law then on absolute ownership of land? Very interesting.

Yes please Chillipepper, tell us who told you that you are not owner of the land your villa is on. Do you have a villa in a designated freehold area. Madge. You are right. So much wrong info gets passed around, people believe it, pass it on again. [b'>You do NOT own the land a villa stands on.[/b'> To Shopgirl. But, seriously, do not take my word for it. Check it out properly, as we did. And it irritates the life out of me when people take what is said as true. Check the facts!! Rice cooker and pressure cooker are my essential kitchen items.:) You can par boil rice, but rice is best cooked the Iranian way in a rice cooker, with water up to knuckle of the finger, salt and a tblsp oil and then you get a crispy 'tardig' on the bottom. I have cooked spaghetti in my rice cooker and steamed veggies in there as well. Definitely lifesaver for me. I have a huge one, wouldn't be without it.

I just read some of the comments to this article and am feeling pretty stupid about the ketchup cups. Do they work the same in Dubai? Thats another stupid thing I dont know, isnt it? I have never seen those types of ketchup containers anywhere, and I wouldn't know that they fan out either, I've only ever seen the sachet ones. Ketchup cup - is that EW talk for a mooncup? They dont fan out and the come in a box but I havent seem them in Dubai. You can get them online but I wouldnt want to have to explain that one to a guy in the post office. It reminds me of the time we were in greece and my husband was trying to explain to a chemist half way up a mountain that I wanted tampons - the guy gave him pile suppositories instead. I was only thankful he didnt think he was trying to buy a mooncup - he would probably have tried to sell him one of the umberellas he had in a corner. edited by DesertRose1958 on 07/11/2012 lol DR, I just had to google mooncup, never heard of it. :)

:-) We used to live in West London near Kew Gardens and the autumn trees are just gorgeous at this time of year - particularly on a crisp, clear morning! Have started a blog about being a Brit in Dubai and coping with homesickness - do check it out if you have a minute www.homesickandheatstruck.com Homesick, I love your blog. Like your 'Weather' post, and 'Noise Pollution'. Am feeling a bit homesick myself for the mild British Autumn. Mind you last time I was home on Bonfire night, some hooligans set fire to about 10 cars down our street, and my next door neighbours Reliant Robin ended up burnt out in a field, can't say I miss that. ;) :)

We have a bit of noise at the moment (due to the new shopping mall being built on the beach), but we can generally sleep through anything, having lived in noisy cities. You could try using a fan on a night, ... this might work. I think the reason they are working all hours is because they are behind schedule (with the tram) and have a time schedule for the mall of 18 months.. I know, isn't it ridiculous? Like they are boasting the loo as a unique amenity :) Love, love Park Island. The facilities are great and the views are monstrous! They are indeed constructing a mosque directly next door, but I am up before the first prayer call so I am not concerned. Anyway, the speakers across, at Murjan in JBR are loud enough to hear. I'm not bothered by prayer calls, you can't move 2 feet in AD without hearing one, after a while you tune out to them anyway. I'm going to take a drive down on Friday for some looking, we've only 1 maybe 2 weekends to get something organised so I really need to have it narrowed down before chatting to agents. Yes a loo is a unique amenity indeed, also ceramic tiles are a feature!! Actually LW I wasn't thinking of the call to prayer, rather the road congestion around there at prayer times when it is built. This one is particularly beautiful and large, and will no doubt be popular around the marina, maybe there will be an increase in traffic and a car park on the doorstep of PI. Just a thought anyway. Good luck and Happy Hunting. edited by Alismum on 01/11/2012

Referring to the first part of your post Irooni......From another point of view, it's infuriating when you spend your life exercising and being disciplined with food and people tell you you are 'lucky' to be slim. Er no, it's not luck, it's really hard work. We're just jealous! I have nothing but admiration for ladies who have to work at it and have the discipline to keep it up, I'm more of an all or nothing type ;) Wow!!!! Well done LW for losing all that weight Re: This 5 to 2 diet, what do you eat on the diet days?. Also do you have a link to the programme you mentioned, I had a look and saw this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD3ug4EaKb0 is this the one?, if so will bookmark it for later. I need to lose the Dubai stone that I've been carrying around ;) OP not sure I could just eat yogurt and bread all day. I did read somewhere about eating soup for a while has the same effects.

wow that's coming up then! The best simple advice I can give is to avoid the "Tall" block. i.e. princess tower, Ocean Heights, that area. Tons of road work there which can be a nuisance. There is one building that seems a bit more accessible in that area, and that's 23 Marina. Finishings also look lovely. Also, try and look for building which are between the actual marina and sheikh zayed road. Getting in and out of these buildings are not subject to traffic of JBR, or the traffic on the bridges that cross the Marina. I think my favorite buildings are the Silverene, Park Island, and any of the Trident projects, as far as fit out and facilities + accessibility. Another building that looks really neat is the Atlantic, but I doubt it will be ready by your time frame. You could also consider one of the original 6 Emaar Towers (Yass, Murjan, Fairooz, etc) which are by the Marina Walk area. Good luck, it can be overwhelming! Oh that's really helpful Beebers thanks for that, funnily enough I was looking at Park island it looks nice, of course it's hard to tell from the photos on Dubizzle, why on earth would you take a photo of down the toilet or the inside corner of a shower cubicle?? Like Beebers said, the Emaar six towers and all the Trident buildings are renowned. There is a huge mosque being constructed right next to Park island, so check this out as well. I really like Silverene, and have to agree with Amelia about JBR.. Perhaps look at Dubizzle, sometimes you can deal with the landlord directly, it should say in the ad. I think getting out in a morning shouldn't be so much a problem, but it can get a bit congested in some parts in the early evening near the bridges/construction.

Nana, Have you spoken to your sons teacher?, who has mentioned that they want to expel him? Can you speak to the principal, or do they have an Achievement centre in the school, or someone you can talk to about his behaviour? What are the school suggesting you do? I didn't put my son in school until KG2, and it took him a good 3 months to really settle into a school environment. At first he was in the cupboards wanting to play with the toys, and he wouldn't stop talking in class. After about 3 months he settled down and by the end of the year he had reached all the targets and had a very good school report. Now he is in Grade 1 and doing fine. Amys advice is really good, if you do have time with your child in a morning take a look at these BrainGym exercises, and see if you can fit any of them in for perhaps 10 mins before school. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VL4an7UC3wA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpSBTVFgK0Y I like this one although it's 33 mins http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chswcigW_nQ edited by Alismum on 28/10/2012

Thanks for the comments. A MW told me that the rotavirus vaccination can be avoided if you practice good hand hygiene. I've been reading into it, long term side affects are relatively unknown as the vaccine is relatively new. The government want the vaccination to be mandatory due to the financial burden of patients with strains of the virus hospitalised. Still undecided on this one. What I'd like to know from people with children, is how common these gastro bugs are here? Specifically the one which rotavirus is used to immunise against? I'm a first time mum so don't have experience of childhood bugs. Samie, With my eldest, I am sure he contracted Rotavirus from the docs clinic. They had this plastic matting on the floor in the waiting area for the children to play on, and 2 days later he was very ill. I'm not sure of the prevalence of Rotavirus over here, but in Europe in the winter months it was common, although most were not as severe as my sons, and could be treated at home. They only hospitalised my son because they were worried that he would become dehydrated as he couldn't keep down liquids. My youngest was never offered any drops, and although he had a very bad gastro bug when he was one, I treated him at home. Do a bit of research to help you make your decision [b'>Burden of acute gastroenteritis among children younger than 5 years of age – a survey among parents in the United Arab Emirates[/b'> http://www.biomedcentral.com/content/pdf/1471-2431-12-74.pdf http://www.whattoexpect.com/childrens-health-and-safety/rotavirus-in-children.aspx http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/downloads/vis-rotavirus.PDF http://www.circleofmoms.com/toddler-moms/should-my-baby-get-the-rotavirus-vaccine-303226 edited by Alismum on 28/10/2012

Sorry about that then. Meant to also say I had a look on google yesterday and someone said to call this company in Deira who may have them. You could give them a ring and ask. www.unicom.ae 00971 4 2239669 or 20pounds on ebay someone else mentioned. Apparently they are hard to come by in this neck of the woods. Hi, Has your baby had the rotavirus drops? What were the side effects? Has anyone's baby or child had rotavirus? After DD experienced a reaction with the 5 in1 I'm concerned about this one...is it necessary? What about the other jabs? Is it possible to get single vaccines for mmr in the UAE? Interested to hear feedback. Thanks edited by samie10 on 26/10/2012 My eldest (now 15) had Rotavirus when he was around 7 months old (in Europe). He spent 3 days in the hospital with a feeding tube, as he couldn't even hold down water and they worried that he may become severely dehydrated. A few days prior to him going into hospital he was vomiting continuously and had the worst diarrhoea. I called the doc out on a home visit and she monitored him, but it didn't clear up on it's own, hence the hospitalisation. All was well in the end though, but if the drops had been available back then he would definitely have had them.
