Verdeque, Apparently you can buy a DVD player with an inbuilt signal convertor which should work with your telly, from somewhere like Sharaf DG or C4. Check out this thread http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=63137 Added later "Sony DVP-SR320 is region free and has a built-in PAL/NTSC Video converter for use on any TV! This DVD Player can play any DVD from any country and region on any TV world wide! Also Dual Voltage for use in any Country" Here it is in C4 for 139AED http://www.ic4uae.com/Product.aspx?productid=53487#description edited by Alismum on 25/10/2012

This is a Muslim country and co habitating is illegal - especially as you say it is family area, do you want your children seeing unmarried men and women living together? Or do you want bachelors living close by your family????? I would telephone police immediately and make a complaint against them. They will be removed quickly. (I am a Muslim so this is from my perspective, but certainly, the bachelor issue is cross cultural, I am sure) I understand the issues as viewed in a Muslim country re co habiting but batchelors? My DS is 30 and is living in an apartment in Dubai surrounded by families. He has neighbours who are also unmarried young men. Are they automatically seen as some kind of threat? No Joyce, I have 5 bachelors living above me and they are no bother at all. Only once during the world cup were they noisy. [i'>"In the history of EW, DesertRose has to go down as the most sensible, fair and common-sensed poster"[/i'> I agree with this Betty, DR comes across as a very wise woman. In fact if you get a reply from DR it's usually well thought out and something your mother would tell you (not that DR is old enough to be my mother lol) edited by Alismum on 25/10/2012

Some of the bus stops have a NOL machine there. You can top it up and check balance. Lamcy Plaza has one next to the bus stop x OP is in the Green Community.. That's a bit far. But I know Spinneys has top up service and there's one in GC. I know what i was trying to say that some of the bus stops have an orange machine next to the bus shelter that tops up the cards. Maybe there is one where she lives I should of explained myself a little better sorry Oh no I get it:) I was thinking for a moment they opened a Lamcy in Green Community lol I read my post back and can understand why you said what you said lol. More haste less speed me thinks! :-) Actually the OP asked the question in 'January' :) , I just resurrected the thread so I could tell you that I saw a poster saying that they now give out Red Nol cards on the bus. :)

you just cannot! this is thee most stupid thing about dubai transportation. sometimes the bus is just in front of you and you cannot take it! it's ridiculous and so frustrating. and the silly card is for just one person which mean if you are with your friend and you have a card with enough credit for two and ur friend does not have a card, you annot use yours twice! so so stupid. Just to say, I saw a notice on the bus today (near the driver) saying that you can now purchase a Red Nol card directly from the driver for 11 AED

I read this story before and that the coffee shop was in the South of Italy. Think it may perhaps be a made up story, but it's lovely nonetheless. I would happily leave a cup of coffee on the wall.

HB, Dare I tell you that I never went to the hairdresser in 5 years, I cut it myself all the time and mainly wore it up in a clip . But...... when kids went back to school last month I nipped to a little beauty salon called Ninas and a male hairstylist cut it like this [url=http://media26.onsugar.com/files/2011/09/36/2/1852/18524404/b8e737b8a0ccdd0a_Short_Bob_Hairstyles_2011_B.jpg'>link[/url'> yep as you can see it is straight, and because my 'crystal tips' hair is prolly not as thick as yours, it has held pretty well now the weathers cooled off a bit. When he blow dried it originally, it looked just like the picture, now that I have to do it myself I just can't get it straight, but am happy with a bit of a kink. The cut made all the difference, am definitely going back. edited by Alismum on 19/10/2012

Thanks for that, Ladies. It does seem straight forward. Is this the same for the Dibba crossing? We may go for a drive and explore a bit. Has anyone done that lately? Do we need a hotel booking? Taffy, If you do the Hatta run, check out the carpet and pot sellers on the road sides for a very good bargain. Have you purchased a rug there? DH will never stop for me when we go. :( Beebers I got a 'huge' persian lookalike carpet, for a couple hundred dirhams. Deffo worth a stop.

700Kms wow Irooni. Mine are on the bus, so I have 8 hours a day to myself when they are at school, after a couple hours cleaning I am free as a bird. If they go to after school activities then they come home on a later bus. The only time I am really really busy is when guests come. Oh lucky you, alismum! I get from 8 to 130, and there is I much that needs to be done that, I can barely call it time to myself! School finishes early for your children then, mine leave at 7 and get back at 3. Sounds like you spend a lot of time during the week driving. A. Rancher is right though, in the olden days lol, our mothers used to kick us out early morning and not see us again til bed time (no one had cars that I knew of). Ooo the guy is jumping are you watching it?

Penny4Thoughts, Did you do the reading eggs with your son?. I joined the 2 week trial and my little boy did it, was really good. Thank you Mariana for recommending it. I'm surprised that the school mentioned repeating a year, most of my sons class weren't reading at end of FS2 (no proper blending of words). When I went to the last parent teacher meeting of the last academic year, the teacher said in FS2 they teach the basics (phonics, simple blending) and year 1 is where they will put it all together, so no worries. My son is picking it up very fast now though in Grade 1, as they've stepped it up in class and doing lots of reading activities. I'm amazed of the progress in just one month. edited by Alismum on 08/10/2012

Slakhani, I am so glad you reported back. Keep at it with the boric acid, dust the floor under all your white goods in the kitchen and leave it there, and when you go to bed sprinkle the whole kitchen floor as well (you can hoover it up in the morn). Even if you notice a few in the coming weeks don't despair. Oh and don't forget that the babies hatch in about 30 days, so keep repeating the process, until they have gone completely, it really does work, I have been amazed .:)

You are right ladies, it's too early to say whether or not he did it, especially with what happened with Jo Yeates and her landlord at Xmas. But one has to wonder why the police chose to publish his photo so soon after they caught him. I read today one newspaper saying they do have forensic evidence now, but you are right 'innocent until proven guilty', and like Expat said, THEY are the experts for a reason, best see what transpires over the next 24 hours.

its incomprehendible how someone could do this to a little girl, WHY OH WHY, poor little pet must have been so frightened, how could any parent over cope with this... so so sad, may she rest in peace... It is and for 5 days he's been silent, I don't believe in torture, but come on 5 days while the parents suffer unimaginable pain, it's sickening. Hi Carol, My son is an early September baby as well. I didn't send him to school until he was 5 (last year), and he went into FS2, he's one of the oldest in the class and is doing really well. I think it would have been difficult for him to have gone straight into year 1 last year, and he would have struggled, even though he came out talking and could talk the hind legs off a donkey at age 2, like your son. He is bright as a button but I felt he was too immature for the higher grade and I am glad they suggested putting him back a year. Now he's in Year 1 and coming on in leaps and bounds, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Would it be difficult for you to keep him at home for a further year, I think it's always beneficial to be with your mum for another year if at all possible.

I thought this was interesting, the lady who wrote this is in Saudi, but I guess (some of it) could apply to us over here in Dubai. [u'>The Five Stages of Culture shock[/u'> Stage 1-the Honeymoon stage This is when you first arrive and everything seems so wonderfully different, exotic even, and you want to experience and explore your surroundings. It’s the same feeling people have when they are on vacation. This phase usually lasts up to 2 months. Stage 2- the Distress stage You start feeling confused, and things don’t seem exciting and new anymore. You start to miss home and familiar things. The new culture starts to feel frustrating. Stage 3- Withdrawal stage In this stage you start feeling more hostile toward the new culture, the people and the environment. You see faults everywhere; you criticize and mock everything. People start comparing everything to their own “superior” culture, refusing to accept the differences they encounter. One might find the behavior of the locals “backward”, and unpredictable. At this stage you start to feel anxious and withdraw and isolate yourself. Stage 4-Autonomy stage You start coping better with the culture and problems you face, it has become more understandable and tolerable. You feel less isolated because you have started interacting more with locals. This is the first step to acceptance. Stage 5- Independence stage You start to feel comfortable and confident in your surroundings. You embrace the culture and even start preferring some traits from it rather than your own. You might have adapted some of the local traditions, while still feeling yourself. It feels like this is your new home away from home. From here (actually this blog is fascinating if you get chance to read it) http://blueabaya.blogspot.com/2010/04/culture-shock.html edited by Alismum on 01/10/2012

Oh my!!! My abgoosht is on a small flame for about 12 hours! I think thwt is absolutely amazing! Irooni, The guests that come here always go back with a pressure cooker after they've seen me cook with one, saves time and effort, cos as you know persian cuisine is time consuming. I even showed my MIL bless her when she was alive, and from then on she cooked with one as well. My hubby introduced me to the pressure cooker when he was a student 30 years ago (Id never heard of one before then), as well as his way of washing up ;) I eat with my family, but I have to confess that my festenjoon is awful, can't cook it properly and am not in love with the sweet taste, everything else I cook fine, since I've been doing it for 30 years now..... lol :)

Puddleducks. When we first came here, my eldest (now 15) was under the 'radar' (schools words) for his lack of attention/writing skills. I had him assessed under the schools recommendations at BILD and they gave me a report saying that he had some issue with fine motor skills and required OT, which he had for a year. He spent 3 years in this school (IB) but had to repeat a year later on, so I changed schools and he repeated the year in a BC school. This is what might happen with you, you will get your son assessed and perhaps they will request that he needs speech and/or OT. Or like Amy said they may say that it would be better of he goes into Grade 1 as he's not mature enough or academically advanced enough for Grade 2. My youngest, just turned 6, is in Grade 1 (BC). He started school in FS2 age 5. I preferred him to be a year back (he's one of the oldest in his class), because my eldest struggled a bit and I didn't want this with my youngest as well. Although my LO is bright as a button (and cheeky with it), I am happy with the decision I made.

I posted about this earlier. A fellow from Qatar, who had travelled to Saudi, had it. I believe it's the first time that SARS has originated in the Middle East. A bit of a concern because I doubt the health systems here could cope with a major outbreak. Also it's Haj next month. Yet another thing to add to the [i'>'what do you worry about'[/i'> list posted earlier on here [img'>http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/images/smilies/scared.gif[/img'>

Gorobattie, I am so glad to hear that the school have taken action. One has to wonder if the threat of filing a police report might have spurred them on a wee bit, but like Marroosh said it was your persistence and determination that got the results. Hope those boys have had a good telling off from both the school and their parents, and that you and your little boy sleep better tonight.

Also, take him to the bookstore and let him pick hs books.
