Check out this netmums thread sharing the same concerns re: reading ability at 5 yrs old. [url=http://www.netmums.com/coffeehouse/children-parenting-190/primary-school-age-4-11-years-60/78326-reading-ability-soon-5-year-old.html'>link[/url'> I have to say also that a few months makes all the difference. With my son, I have also noticed a vast improvement in the last few weeks with his reading since he started back in Grade 1. I think there comes a point when it just 'clicks' and suddenly they are reading the words with ease, looking back I think this is what happened with my eldest as well. Try not to stress over it too much, but if you can get him to read the bedtime story at night to push him forward a bit.

Couldn't sleep at all, maybe only an hour throw the night. I walk up this morning, told DS that I will take him to school not by school bus, ladies, I wish you could see his face, he was happy and no dramas as usual in the morning, he was chatty and cheerful. I waited for the school bus, to know what grades are these 3 boys are, 2 of them are in the same class G5, and the other G3, and one from the G5 is the brother of the G3. I asked about - the names of the bullies, and only one answered, I asked him what grade he is, then he was concerned what happened, I told him you know exactly what you did, and you will hear from your teacher, and the same with the other 2 boys. Took DS to school and he was kind enough to help another child to swipe their access card - the attendance card - then he done his own :) then went to see the deputy of junior school, I told him exactly what happened and I did file a complain with the police and KHDA, the deputy told me he already was not happy with the performance of the bus attendants as they do not involve enough in such situations like that and not proactive, that he pulled out 2 of them, he listened to me carefully and - surprised surprise - he told me why go to police or the ministry with something like that, and I should go first to school, but he said he totally understand what I am going throw, I requested from him a letter from the parents of the 3 boys and sign it, that these 3 boys won't get in touch under any condition with DS, and the deputy assured me that what will happen, and a full investigation with the attendant why she did nothing and ignored the complain of DS, he is only a KG2 boy. Now I am waiting for the reply from the school, as I won't let this go under the bridge, if I did not get a reply by the end of the school day, as the police officer last night told me, I will initiate the police report about the 3 bullies, now I have their full name, as there were a list of every school bus number with the names of the children/kids attending it. I feel weak and tired, but can't go to sleep, I will go to sleep after I get a resolve to this issue. Ladies, thank you for your words and advices, it did support me throw the night and kept me going. EW you never fail me. Thank you. You and your little boy, bless him were on my mind last night as well. I hate to see bullying. I always tell my eldest (Grade 10) that whenever he is able to, he should always stand up for those weaker than himself. I told him today to keep an eye out for the little ones on the bus (he generally sleeps on the way) and to step in, or inform someone in authority if he sees anyone being bullied. I think the least the school should do is send a letter to the parents threatening to evict the students from the bus for the term/year if this behaviour carries on. Anyway I am glad that you didn't let it go. Let's see what happens next with the school, maybe the boys (and attendant) will be hauled before the school principal today, I certainly hope so.

Gorobattie, When the bus picks him up tomorrow, speak to the driver and attendant and insist that your son sits at the front near the attendant. My son is the same age as your son and he also takes the bus, and there's children from KS1 to Grade 12 on this bus. The youngest are sat at the front near the driver and attendant and the elder ones at the back. The bus company has policies and some have CCTV installed. Please write an email to the bus company (I would put the school principal in the copy as well), or phone them tomorrow telling them what your son has told you, and say that you want immediate action taken on these boys and also tell them that you have been in touch with the police and are prepared to take things further if the matter is not resolved. Which bus company is it? <em>edited by Alismum on 23/09/2012</em>

Gorobattie, Perhaps you could get in touch with the school bus company and file a complaint about these boys and ask them to take action, also inform them that you will be contacting the police and relevant authorities. See how they respond.. Also I saw this on the KHDA website [i'>"What should I do if my child is being bullied at school? KHDA encourages all schools to have a child protection policy in place. We advise you to raise any incidents or concerns immediately with the school and, if you are not able to resolve the issue, please contact us".[/i'> http://www.khda.gov.ae/Pages/En/commonQuestionssch.aspx Knowledge and Human Development Authority Block 8, Academic City, P.O Box 500008, Dubai, U.A.E. Khatooon, I knitted both my kids all their baby clothes, but we lived in Europe at the time and it was cold. When we came here my youngest was one and he never wore any of them except for a jacket I knitted, which he wore a few times. Like Dramaqn said your friend could perhaps knit cotton dresses. When I was in my 20s I knitted myself a few cotton dresses, strappy ones, knee length or just above, with bobbly cotton yarn. I wish I could find a few patterns online to show you, they were really good and fashionable, even today I think they would be fine (lol not for me anymore though ;) ), I wore them in Spain back then and they were really cool. Few ideas [url=http://s3.amazonaws.com/production.products.styledon.com/12397/medium.png'>1[/url'> , [url=http://image1.oasap.com/o_img/2011/12/23/1695-4424-home/knitted-cotton-one-piece-dress.jpg'>2[/url'> , [url=http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/img-thing?.out=jpg&size=l&tid=53388842'>3[/url'> , [url=http://s3.amazonaws.com/production.products.styledon.com/5397/medium.png'>4[/url'> , [url=http://images.littlewoods.com/is/image/Littlewoods/gallery4ColPortraitT?$gallery4ColPortrait$&$prod_img=A251P_SP133_07_273N3a'>5[/url'>, [url=http://styledon.com/products/fashion/j-crew/sweaters/2815-featherweight-cashmere-short-sleeve-cardigan'>6[/url'> , [url=http://cloud4.lbox.me/images/384x384/201111/cotton-wedding-hood-poncho_tvrofy1320205894589.jpg'>7[/url'> I'm not sure there would be a market for knitted baby clothes over here, so maybe she should broaden her scope to cotton blankets, ladies wear, pashmina type shoulder coverings. Oooo that got me thinking of knitted ponchos, I bet there are some on here who had one or two of those in their wardrobes ;) Maybe there would be a niche in the market over here for cotton type ponchos as shoulder coverings in shopping malls. <em>edited by Alismum on 19/09/2012</em>

When I first came here and we lived in the villa I often used to get gardeners knocking on the door, and they would always ask if the boss was in ...... lol So if I was you I would tell any gardener (especially if they are asking for a donation) to come back when the 'boss' is home. :)

I personally wouldn't go for the fumigation if you are already living there, who knows what chemicals they use and the safety aspect (long and short term) especially since some of the past 'so called food poisoning deaths' turned out to be insecticide poisoning. Anyway that's just me.

Thank you very much Alismum. Such great help...and idea. i will try boric acid today. if not i will take ur advice and call madras. thanks once again. You get the Boric acid from Boots 6.50 dirhams per white container, it's called 'Greenswood Healthcare Boric Acid Powder'. Buy one or two depending on your villa/appt size, but you don't need to use much. I used about half a container over 2 weeks. With the boric acid this is what you have to do. Clean your kitchen, move the appliances from the wall (fridge, washing machine, dishwasher, cooker etc) and using something like a talc dispenser, squeeze a very fine dust on the floor under each appliance, so that the floor is covered, then push your appliance back. Be careful not to breath in the powder fumes as it gets on your chest (cover mouth with tea towel). You can do this in other areas where the roaches are, but do it predominantly under the kitchen appliances. I also placed the dust on kitchen floor when I went to bed (and hoovered it up in a morning), and near the entrances to the outside doors. (Note don't place it in clumps as they walk around it) If you have animals that may lick it up, then it might be better to go for the gel option, or if you have little kids under 5 that crawl on the floor... but generally I have read that it's a relatively non-toxic method of roach elimination, but saying this it's best to always err on the side of caution and keep kids and pets away, so doing it after the kids have gone to bed is the best option. The cockroaches will walk across the powder and it gets on their legs and they can't bear it so they lick it off and it destroys their digestive system. Then they take it to their nest and it kills the others. Repeat this method every day for a week or two until you stop seeing the roaches, but keep the powder under the appliances. This method can take a week or two depending on how many roaches you have. I was generally seeing a couple every day, mostly dead but I did see a couple look me in the eye. If you have 100s already then probably go for the gel option asap. I had tried the piff paff and it worked a bit but boric acid is definitely more effective, I haven't seen a roach in a month now, google it on you tube. Read here for exact instructions [u'>[b'>COCKROACH ELIMINATION USING BORIC ACID[/b'>[/u'> http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef614.asp [u'>[b'>HOW IS BORIC ACID ABLE TO KILL INSECTS WHEN IT IS ONLY AS TOXIC AS TABLE SALT?[/b'>[/u'> http://brad4l.hubpages.com/hub/boric-acid-toxicity-table-sale-insecticide-sugar <em>edited by Alismum on 30/09/2012</em>

Waitrose/Spinneys used to have them, although their section of colours diminished. Don't know why more places (C4, Geant) don't sell them, maybe there's not a market for them over here.

Looks like they may have caught up with the guy from the latest property scam, Arabian Business is reporting. [url=http://www.arabianbusiness.com/dubai-property-scammer-caught-in-lebanon-473261.html'>link[/url'> [u'>[b'>Dubai property scammer caught in Lebanon[/u'> [/b'> The owner of a real estate and entertainment company at the centre of an AED6m (US$1.6m) Dubai property scam is being extradited from Lebanon to the UAE, it was reported. Brigadier Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, director of Dubai Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) told Al-Ittihad that Saudi national Haitham Mahmoud Alkouatly was in the process of being brought back to the UAE following the issue of an Interpol arrest warrant. Dubai Police had earlier told Arabian Business in a statement that Alkouatly, whose Shamyana Entertainment firm allegedly fleeced AED5.875m from landlords and tenants, fled the UAE on 30 August. Police in the emirate said they received more than 70 complaints from residents in Emaar’s The Greens and a further eight from tenants in Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Lake Towers, Tecom, The Gardens, Downtown and Jumeirah Beach Residence.

Informed sources told this website that owners of property valued over Dh1 million and having no mortgage on it can approach the Dubai Land Department with the title deed along with a passport copy and passport size photograph. Following the payment of the fees, the Land Department will issue an approval certificate which will allow the property owner to approach the Department of Economic Development, which will then issue a trade license for a fee of Dh2,000 per year. After receiving the trade licence, the property owner can approach the Immigration counters located in the Land Department, which will issuing a two-year investor visa. In June 2011, the UAE federal government announced it would extended visa for real estate investors from six months to three years. This website reported that a number of services such as applying for a local driving license, personal loans and getting admission to schools will likely be opened to holders of these visas. So far, no details of the new visa have been issued yet. A Department of Naturalisation and Residency Dubai call centre employee said they had not received any update on the new visa and were still issuing six-month visa to property investors. The cost of six-month residence visa is Dh2,000. Renewal cost is also the same.

I was told it was pretty common for people to do that though? (Not that I do though, am destined to be single forever I think. Looking forward to being a mad cat lady one day) As no one has mentioned it yet - thought you should know - if you don't already - you are not supposed/allowed to live with a man who is not actually your husband. OP is coming here to join her partner, but he won't be able to sponsor her until she finds work. That would mean visa runs until she has her own work visa. Bit of a pain. I'm confused, OP said that she was moving here with her fiancé, so regardless of her job situation he won't be able to sponsor her anyway because they are not married, or have I missed something here? Regardless, OP, I know many couples here who live together unmarried but there is always a risk of being found out, all it takes is a stroke of bad luck. And here's another vote for the Marina/JBR as well, loads of cafes a stroll away, the beach, and it has a very social vibe as there are always people around. It's hard to meet people when you don't work but you could look at joining social groups (social circles Is a good place to start) or even just going for classes at the gym? edited by SeaofLove on 14/09/2012 Better not to take the risk, and since OP is jobless an like AmyAus says, the job market isn't great, she won't know when she will have a sponsor. Until then she can only stay on a visit visa. That requires visa runs. Plus, getting married on a tourist visa I don't think is possible. They better go to their home country, marry, he comes back here and OP arranges the paper work so he can apply for a visa for her. OP is already here (she arrived 2 days ago), so I doubt if she would want to go home again so soon after arriving, and visa runs are no problem really until she finds a job. We did visa runs for 6 months until we got our 3 year visa. I would say JBR is a really good location for you, everything you need on the doorstep, ideal for a couple with no children. Congestion is not really a huge problem because parking is at the back of the Walk. There are some really nice apartments in Dubai Marina as well, although it's a wee bit quieter around there. A 2 bed JBR would be around 90K

Hello, Does anyone know where I can get some natural medicines to cure Helicobacter Pylori? I am looking for Colostrum, Mastic Gum and Broccoli Sprouts. Thanks. Mastic gum you will probably get from the Iranian grocery in Satwa (ask Irooni, she will know where it is). You will most probably be able to get the broccoli seeds in an organic store so you can sprout them, maybe you will be able to buy the sprouts there as well, but sprouting yourself is very easy... As for colostrum, ask in boots, or again in one of the health stores/organic stores. Also I was reading the other day about coconut oil, and how it can kill H Pylori. All my family take a spoonful of coconut oil everyday for the benefits. I cook with it as well. http://blog.hailmerry.com/2011/05/coconut-oil-kills-the-bacteria-that-causes-ulcers/ <em>edited by Alismum on 15/09/2012</em>

Really is it a scam?, you are just sending money back to the person who sent it by mistake. I often use DU 'one to one' to send credit to my son (5s, 10s). I often wondered what I would do if I made a mistake in the number. Doesn't it say who credited the money though, so you would know if it's the same person who called you that credited you. I would be inclined to send it back as it's not my money anyway and it could be a poor worker/maids last 10 dirham.

Buying rolls of of "brown paper" to cover all our school notebooks and transparent plastic paper to cover the textbooks (why on earth would we do that...), Mum would spend hours before every school year covering our books. I remember this, one year my mother covered all my school books with the flowery wallpaper which was left over from when she decorated the living room .:)

Hi JBRMummy, From a British Expat site [i'>"The need for a countersignature has caused problems for many British expatriates newly arrived in their countries of residence. The application form requests that a countersignature be obtained from a person in that country who has known you for 2 years or more. The problem is that most of those who have spent less than 2 years in that country will not be able to find any qualified person. 1.The U.K. Passport Service states that countersignatures are not required for straightforward renewal and there is good evidence that despite what the forms say, this is also the case in British missions overseas. If your appearance hasn't changed greatly, then you don't need a countersignature. 2.Some people have sent the forms back to the United Kingdom to get a U.K. person to countersign. 3.Others have had the local countersignature strike out the 2 years and replace it with the correct period of time (such as 9 months). [/b'> If a passport is needed urgently, the third option is best. All the evidence suggests that all three of these methods have been accepted. "[/i'> [b'>I have done the third option, i.e. replace 2 years with 1 year and this was accepted (twas last year).[/b'>

Just to say Sadie that I cleaned my kitchen from top to bottom today, lifted out the fridge and cleaned under there, and haven't seen another roach (brown as big as your fingernail type), so it's normal here to get one or two. Someone on here mentioned a while back that they are not the same breed of cockroaches as in other places that multiply as quick.

Hi Sadie, In my last place (villa) I had two (that I saw) and I put in one of those roach houses (under the fridge) never saw another after that. In this appt, the week before last I saw one, then the next night saw another. I sprayed some Pifpaf under the fridge and cooker and touch wood haven't seen another. It is common over here to see the odd one or two and it doesn't necessarily mean you have an infestation. No worries, I wouldn't call pest control just yet, get a roach house from Choithrams or C4, put it under the fridge, perhaps spray a bit of Pifpaf and keep your eyes open just in case, but don't worry. ETA: and no it doesn't mean you live in a filth pit, they are common over here. <em>edited by Alismum on 18/08/2012</em>

Hey hillsbils, That's fab news about the embryo's! Hmm, it's a tough choice, at day 5, we had 3 blasts and 2 morulas (spelling?) we literally made our choice when I was lying on the table for transfer. We decided as I was 28 we would transfer 2 blasts and I'm pregnant with one. We didn't freeze the others as they weren't excellent quality. Dr. M was happy to transfer 3 with me but because of my age she was more leaning towards 2 I think. I guess what you have to get your head around is whether you could cope ith the three! Hopefully all will become a bit clearer tomorrow when you find out the state of things. So much luck tomorrow and hope the 2ww goes quickly x Ah yes the 2 week wait.... and then the daily wait after that until we get over the critical stages (26 weeks?) I cant imagine ever relaxing fully again! Hope all is well today. Whew x edited by hilsbils on 14/08/2012 Great news HB, lol 2ww, once you get preggo, after 28 weeks, babe in arms, naughty toddler, then lippy teenager, you NEVER EVER fully relax again in your life.....[img'>http://upload.cdfreaks.com/seanbyrne/smiley_shamrock.gif[/img'>

I know you probably have done a bit of googling yourself ;) , but found these ladies chatting about the same thing [url=http://www.whattoexpect.com/forums/multiples-and-twins/archives/ivf-ladies-how-many-eggs-did-you-insert-and-how-many-took.html'>link[/url'> Good luck with whatever you decide HB, 3 sounds like a handful, but you won't need to go through IVF again :)

Yes George Michael was good as well, never heard of his second song mind you, again wish he'd sang something well known. Also I thought Kate Bush was going to perform. They did a song of hers 'Running up that hill', would have been better if she'd have performed it live (or Wuthering Heights, love that song). I never saw Pink Floyd, perhaps they should have been there to play Another Brick in the Wall. I was very happy to see Roger Daltry and the Who at the end, he never ages, still looks young for his age, must be getting on for 70. <em>edited by Alismum on 13/08/2012</em>

I watched the closing ceremony live last night, thought it was really good. I wish Annie L had sung something a bit more well known and not the theme from Dracula. I liked that they put Freddie Mercury on the screens and Queen singing, not sure about the woman singing with Queen, wish they'd had Freddie singing, also why didn't they sing 'We Are The Champions', was waiting for that one. I loved the Who and John Lennon singing Imagine, and Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.. Not sure of the Spice Girls, seemed a bit out of tune, but liked Take That. Overall thought the show was fantastic, felt really proud to be British.. Did anyone else watch it? <em>edited by Alismum on 13/08/2012</em>

Or you could restock the cupboard full of herbs and spices. I have a cupboard full of Indian and Persian herbs and spices. It's my favourite cupboard and smells divine. If I had a kitchen cupboard that had a smell that wouldn't go away I'd be off down C4's spice section :)
