I took my LO to JBR beach early on this evening and to be honest was really disappointed. We walked from Sheraton to Hilton and it's all fenced off, much of the beach has been downsized to make way for shops (I think). ETA: I found this pic of the extension to JBR walk, and it looks OK (in it's finished form), guess we will have to suffer in the meanwhile (couple of years maybe). I have the same problem with washing powder over here, whites don't come out white, and I don't feel they have the same fresh laundered smell. Also has anyone noticed fabric conditioners aren't the same either. I have bought Downey Stay fresh (blue container) a couple times and it's the consistency of water with a hint of a smell. I'm sure it was thicker at one time (could be wrong, memory failing). And sometimes the washing will smell lovely, other days there's no fabric conditioner smell at all. It's not my machine as I clean it regularly. Louise I am gonna try putting it in the drum instead of dispenser, thanks for that tip. edited by Alismum on 07/08/2012

I agree with Cheeky Monkey. My kids are going to bed late at the moment as we have changed our routine around a bit so we can go out later in the day due to the heat. Consequently they are also waking up nearer lunchtime. I did this last year as well during the summer hols, but as soon as school begins, a few days of getting up at 6am and it's a 7-7.30pm bedtime (for my 5 year old) with no problems (10 o'clock for my teen). Usually takes couple days to get back into this routine. I think you should get them up at 7am in a morning, out and about, swimming pool, beach or similar, walking around the shopping malls in the afternoon, then try and get them to bed 7ish on an evening. Even if they don't sleep straight away for a few nights, persevere. I don't think you will have to resort to any medication. edited by Alismum on 04/08/2012

I It does look as though the fence will go most of the way to the Hilton. At a guess, I would say the work will be going on for two or three years. I agree it is unsightly. I can't see the fence near the Hilton yet but I wonder if it will affect their clientele, since the view in some rooms might be a fence/building site, rather than the beach. edited by Alismum on 04/08/2012

I cooked it as well, although I made it in my rice cooker and added chicken portions later when the rice was cooked (cooked in my own sauce). I found that the Knorr kabsa was really quite salty, and tbh it tasted like it came from a packet. It also was a wee bit too spicy for the kids. I think I am going to try and recreate the kabsa using the spices from the cupboard and not from a ready made packet and see how that goes. I have a recipe I found online.

Do we have the same 5 yr old? :D Maybe we do, I have never see another like mine, keeps me on my toes ;) If there is anything to be done during the daytime we will gladly help, but those timings are a bit late for us.... :/: For anyone thinking of volunteering, here's a video from last year http://www.mydubaimycity.com/video/adopt-camp-care-packages-4-labourers (Hmmm not sure I see many 5 year olds in this video (cept a couple of well-behaved ones). You are right BM, it is rather late 9pm-1am then giving out the packs in the camps til 3am. Maybe we will do the 9-11 shift and leave my teen there until the end. Not sure of the logistics yet. We don't normally retire until late anyway (til school starts again). Trouble is my 5 year old is a handful and I'm not sure I'll be packing, probably running around the place after him ;) . If we go it'll be for my teen, as he wants us to come as well. What to do???? edited by Alismum on 02/08/2012

Very easy recipe, I cooked this last night for Iftar [u'>Gheimeh Badenjoon[/u'> (Iranian) (Split pea and aubergine stew) kilo lamb cubed or leg of lamb (with bone) 2 onions teasp turmeric cup of yellow split peas tin tomato paste tin tomatoes 3-4 dried limes (or powder) s & p couple large aubergines In pressure cooker fry onions til brown and then add meat and fry, add turmeric, salt and pepper. wash split peas and add, add tomato paste, tin tomatoes, puncture and add dried limes. add water (upto half of the pressure cooker) cook for about half hour or so until meat tender (if leg of lamb meat will have come off the bone) and split peas soft, and water has been absorbed and consistency is a thick yummee stew. (also some people add a pinch of cinnamon, a relative of mine adds a pinch of chilli at the end for more flavour) Note if using leg of lamb remove bone before serving. in meantime salt and fry aubergines, when khoresht (stew) is cooked place aubergines on top. Serve with rice, yogurt, and salad.

Bracalandia, It is possible but you need to go around the schools when admissions open in August and see or keep ringing and asking. When I came a few years back, we came in August and went to 3 schools and managed to get him in one to start two weeks later. DIA, Regent and DBS all had places at that time due to those on the waiting list going elsewhere. For GEMS enrollments this is what it says on the Wellington website For enrollment enquiries at any of the GEMS schools, please contact [email protected] or +971-4-347-7770 ext. 530 Good luck!

Tram idea looks awesome but gosh the 'deep excavation' for that has been going on for years now! Yet to see some ground level development. The work I'm talking about is directly opposite me in Amwaj beach side where the outsoor car park is and next to the beach area where they always have bootcamp. They are putting tar down which I thought was an extension to the car park but people are saying its just a temporary car park they are making because the big car park is turning into an underground one! I must have a look when I walk up there. I think this is the place they used to have the little fun fair. More shops???? Maybe the underground carpark is for the tram. One of the tram stations is round there isn't is SydneyGal?

For Hilsbils, get preparing :) Here are eleven simple tests for expectant parents to take to prepare themselves for the real life experience of being a mother or father 1. Women: Put on a dressing gown and stick a bean bag down the front. Leave it there for nine months. After nine months take out 10% of the beans. Men: go to the chemist, tip the contents of your wallet on the counter and invite the pharmacist to help himself, then go to the supermarket and arrange to have your salary paid directly to their head office. Go home pick up the paper and read it for the last time. 2. Before you go ahead and have children find a couple who are already parents and berate them about their methods of discipline, lack of patience, appallingly low tolerance levels and how they have allowed their children to run riot. Suggest ways in which they might improve their child's sleeping habits, toilet training, table manners, and overall behaviour. Enjoy it - it will be the last time you have all the answers. 3. To discover how the nights will feel walk around the living room from 5pm to 10pm carrying a wet bag weighing about 8 - l0 lbs. At 10pm put the bag down, set the alarm clock for midnight and go to sleep. Get up at 12pm and walk around with the bag again until 1am. Set the alarm for 3am. As you can't get back to sleep get up at 2am and make a drink. Go to bed at 2 45am. Get up again at 3am when the alarm goes off. Sing songs in the dark until 4am. Set the alarm for 5am. Get up at 5am and make the breakfast. Keep this up for 5 years. Look cheerful. 4. Can you stand the mess children make? To find out smear marmite on the sofa and jam on the curtains. Hide a fish finger behind the stereo and leave it there throughout the Summer. Stick your fingers in the flower bed - then wipe them clean on the wall paper. Cover the stairs with crayons. How does that look? 5. Dressing small children is not as easy as it seems. First buy an octopus and a string bag. Attempt to put the octopus in the bag, so that none of its arms stick out. Time allowed for this - all morning. 6. Take an egg carton, Using a pair of scissors and a pot of paint turn it into an alligator. Now take a toilet roll tube. Using only Copydex and a piece of foil make a Christmas cracker. Last take a milk container, ping-pong ball and an empty packet of Cocoa Pops then make an exact replica of the Eiffel Tower. Congratulations you have just qualified for a place on the Playgroup Committee. 7. Forget the Peugeot 205 and buy a Sierra. And don't think you can leave it on the driveway spotless and shining, family cars don't look like that. Take a choc-ice and put it in the glove compartment and leave it there. Get a 20p piece, stick it in the cassette player. Take a family sized pack of chocolate biscuits, mash them down the back seat. Take a garden rake - run it along both sides of the car. There - perfect. 8. Get ready to go out. Wait outside the loo for half an hour. Go out the front door. Come back in again, go out, come back in again, go out again. Walk down the front path. Walk back up it. Walk down it again. Walk very slowly down the road for five minutes. Stop to inspect every cigarette end, piece of chewing gum, dirty tissue and dead insect on the way. Retrace your steps. Scream that you have had just about as much as you can stand until the neighbours come out to stare at you. Give up and go back home again. Do it all over again. You are now just about ready to take a small child for a walk. 9. Go to your local supermarket. Take with you the nearest thing you can find to a pre-school child - a fully grown goat is ideal. If you intend to have more than one child then take more than one goat. Buy your groceries without letting the goats out of' your sight. Pay for everything the goats eat or destroy. Until you can easily accomplish this, do not even consider having children. 10. Hollow out a melon, make a small hole in the side, suspend it from the ceiling and swing it from side to side. Now take a bowl of soggy Weetabix and try to spoon it into the swaying melon whilst pretending to be an aeroplane. Continue until half the Weetabix has gone, tip the rest in your lap making sure that a lot of it ends up on the floor. You are now ready to feed a 12 month old baby. 11. Learn the names of every character from the Care Bears, Postman Pat, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. When you find yourself singing "I wanna be a Care Bear" at work, you finally qualify as a parent.

Not sure that I could cope with being a 'granny' mummy (being in that 40+ age bracket!!!). Age is a number. If you want a child and you manage to get pregnant go for it. Unless your one of those people who are 40+ but act 60+. I have a Roman blind like this one from Sedar with a chocolate brown border in my sons bedroom. http://www.sheila-interiors.co.uk/images/waterfall_roman_blind.jpg A few days ago there was a leak from one of the appts above and it came through the bedroom window and now there is a huge water mark down the centre of the blind. I have tried to clean the blind, but it's dye from the chocolate brown border and it won't come off, so I have an idea to do something artistic with it (I never really liked it anyway). Sadly I am not the most artistic person in the world, so need a bit of inspiration. Was thinking of getting some fabric paint. What could be done with the blind that won't look like it's been done by a 5 year old? I don't want to bin it just yet.

It's made the papers now. Derien you are famous ;) http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/or-else-no-garbage-collection-in-springs-meadows-2012-07-17-1.467554 [i'>"There’s a foul smell spreading in the neighbourhood of some villas in Dubai’s upscale Springs and Meadows communities. These villas belong to owners who haven’t paid their service charges for years. Garbage bags have begun piling outside these villas as Emaar Properties, the master developer and manager of these communities, has stopped garbage collection as their owners haven’t cleared their outstanding dues. “Emaar has stopped certain community services such as picking up the garbage in Meadows/Springs from units whose owners are service charge defaulters and by doing so they have directly targeted the residents who are renting,” John R, who has rented a villa in Meadows, told Emirates 24|7. He states that as a tenant he did endeavor to find out how much his landlord owes, but was told that as per Emaar policy they would only communicate with the property owner. “My issue is that they have now made the service fee part of my problem which I am unable to resolve directly.” Meanwhile, garbage is piling up and is leading to a serious hygiene problem in the community. “What is worse is that this also inconveniences those owners who have paid their service fee as garbage, bad smell and disease are everyone's problem,” John says. Faisal Baig, who owns villas in the Springs/Meadows, says: “It’s common practice that Emaar follows in these communities when the owner does not pay their service charges. However, I believe that it is only the last resort.” He does admit that tenants, who has paid a premium to stay in these communities, do suffer because of the owner's fault. “He has to speak to his landlord and get the matter sorted,” he adds. Well one the sufferer’s has found an ingenious way. He is using his neighbour’s bins till the time his landlord clears the dues. Going by the name on a online community forum, Derien, states: “We have just sent an email to Emaar to find out how much the landlord owes. On the name and shame board, it says 2010 and 2011 are outstanding. “Our landlord is quite nice so I am hoping he will pay for it and quickly. The neighbours are on vacation so we might have to start using their bins to ensure collection. It really stinks.” Another tenant in the Springs says that Emaar does not allow tenants to find out whether their owner is a service charge defaulter or not. “There is no facility from Emaar to find out if the owner is a defaulter of service charge. “I believe they should provide a service similar to Nakheel and let renters know the status on service charge.” Emirates 24|7 reported in May that Emaar had started naming and shaming people who are not willing to pay maintenance charges on time. Right at the entrance of the different communities within Springs and Meadows, the developer had put up the street and villa numbers of those who haven’t paid up. Emaar had yet to respond to queries from Emirates 24/7 at the time of filing this report".[/i'>

I still enjoy Pizza Express - especially with the 25AED offer on any pizza or salad! Also love California Pizza The Pizza Express in Ibn Battuta is really good.. yum! Have you been on a Friday? They do a buffet for only 59 aed with large salad bar, soups, fish & chicken, rice, pasta dishes, and 4 different choices of pizza annnnd icecream / desert. I know its not gourmet but I was pleasantly surprised and my Dh loves a bargain so we go quite often. Its very very good value In fact we usually get a table on the boundary of Pizza Express and the India Palace and I eat from the Indian buffet next door for the same price of 59aed edited by hilsbils on 12/07/2012 HB is that all day Friday? or only lunchtime? I wonder if the JBR branch have the same offer? I notice that Pizza Company have an offer of 75AED for meal for 4, with pizza, pasta, Italian baked rice, garlic bread and drinks. I have never tried them, but sounds like a good offer for me and the kids after the beach...has anyone tried their pizzas? I must admit, I do like Pizza hut pizzas, am a real heathen I know, but just love the deep pan and the variety of toppings. The 'real' Italian thin crust with tomato paste and cheese do nothing for me. edited by Alismum on 13/07/2012
