And will it work on clothes stained with bleech? Just ruined my favorite dress:(( Eli, I don't think the dye will cover the bleach. I have dyed a couple of things with bleach marks and the bleach marks always remain. I think you need to strip the colour first by using something like Dylon Dye Colour remover, then dye it the colour you want.

I think also that if a visiting couple cannot hold hands (and nothing else) in public then [b'>why should men from the region (or women for that matter) be allowed to?[/b'> It confuses the visitors because they don't understand the reasons behind it. Of course we shouldn't be flouting the laws etc but I do think that some of the terms handed out to people for doing things normal in their country (peck on the cheek, hand holding etc) have been very long compared to ones who get suspended sentence for assualt, theft etc... is there a reason for this I don't know about? I have to say that I still find it very strange when I see men holding hands, something I can't get used to.

Couldn't find the Dress Code 2 thread, was it zapped??? [u'>UAE culture minister to be quizzed on dress code FNC representative pushes enactment of UAE decorum law[/u'> [i'>The Federal National Council is to demand at Tuesday’s session that a law be issued on a UAE dress code so that local culture and sensibilities be respected by force of the law. Hamad Ahmad Al Rahoumi, a member from Dubai, will be quizzing Abdul Rahman Mohammad Al Owais, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, on the issue. Al Rahoumi told Gulf News there has to be a law and it has to be respected. “There has to be respect for the people in the UAE. I very rarely use the a/c as don't like the side effects from it. In case it's a bit warm when we go to bed I have bought a remote control floor standing fan for 80 dhs. from Geant. Much prefer to use that. We have bought a couple of fans as well. I don't know about your place Amelia, but mine is cold even without AC. <em>edited by Alismum on 07/06/2012</em>

ah ladies, Marina has heavy thick fog and I cant see out of the window, and Dh has just left for work. Anyone been on the SZR to AD this morning and know how the road is? Hilsbils, Don't know if you are on a high floor, but I've just been with mine to drop them off at the bus and there was no fog downstairs, roads looked clear. Fog seems to be high up. <em>edited by Alismum on 05/06/2012</em>

Another thing, you could maybe even get a 4 bed ( or 3 + maid) in JLT for 100K. Just had a look and seen a few. Don't forget you will be able to knock the price down as well. Global Lake View, Cluster E, is not a bad tower (right near park and shop and other amenities). I have been in this tower swimming pool and it's on the lower floor. Well maintained (well it was a year ago), 5 mins walk from the metro stn and 3 beds start around 85K. Worth a look, maybe you can get a low floor. People move over here a lot, so if you go for apt and really want villa (or vice versa) then you can move after 1 year as it's quite painless really (the removal men do everything for you, pack unpack). I have moved 3 times already. If you really want to go for a villa, then Springs 2 bed. I also saw some in Mirdiff on Dubizzle for under 100K (but may be far out from DBS). <em>edited by Alismum on 05/06/2012</em>

JLT is Jumeirah Lake Towers, it's over the metro station bridge from the Dubai Marina/JBR. Regarding the Swimming pools, it depends on the building, some are on lower floors. If you get one on a lower floor, then you could walk up the stairs. Have a look on Dubizzle. It's worth considering, seems to be an up and coming area. I was down there the other day. Mind you they do have a bit of a problem with the road which leads out of JLT being one way (and sometimes busy) , maybe someone who lives there can tell you more. Also Feefmick, you get more for your money over in JLT. If I didn't live here, then I would consider JLT. <em>edited by Alismum on 05/06/2012</em>

Just to say did you check out JLT. I saw three beds in Indigo tower for about 100-110K, it's right on the doorstep of the JLT metro station. You can get 3 bed JLT apts (some 2000 sqft) for as little as 85K (which leaves you money for the school bus fare for your kids, or maybe you would be able to afford a car). Worth considering if you are on a budget. You could always go for a lower floor there as well. <em>edited by Alismum on 05/06/2012</em>

Diamante, Is it the new large Choithrams in DEC Tower?. I have been there a few times and it's not too bad. Some of the fresh meat is a bit cheaper than Geant and they seem to have more choice. As for the other 'bulk' items, could be a bit more expensive but like the others have said, nip once a month and stock up on these items in C4. Sometimes they have special offers as well http://www.choithram.com/offers/details.aspx?id=156

Irooni they call it Devils dung lol, apparently it's a species of 'Ferula' (fennel) native to Iran and Afghanistan. I bought some, it smells a bit like sweaty socks in the container, but I cooked with it and the smell went. Only cooked with it once mind you and like I was told 1/8th of a teaspoon. You can use it for vegetable or pulse type curries and it also has medicinal properties. In Farsi it's known as angozad. I read [i'>"Some people call it devil's sweat, while in some other countries it is known as devil's dung or devil's spice. Persians appreciate the smell of asafoetida, therefore it is stated as food or spice for gods." [/i'> I can't think of any Iranian foods that contain this spice though. ETA: Apparently it was used in old Persian recipes for meatballs, but not used nowadays in cooking, exported to India/Sri Lanka <em>edited by Alismum on 19/05/2012</em>

Anouja, Just another couple pointers. Most central hotels don't have private parking. I don't know if you were planning to use public transport, but if not then you may have to get a hotel outside the city. Another thing, the last time we went to Paris it rained the whole time, and as lovely as Paris is, Paris in the rain with 2 kids is difficult. If that happens I would definitely say Science Museum, as walking around the parks, Seine, Eiffel Tower and Champs Elysees in the rain won't be a memorable holiday ;) . We went to Disney in the drizzle and didn't enjoy it much.

Maybe they should pass out fines at the malls and use the proceeds to pay off the debts of people that have been thrown in jail for having their cheques bounced against loans when they lose their jobs and can't pay. edited by americanfamily3 on 14/05/2012 I just wonder whether public opinion (like on GN, Twitter) can force some sort of legislation leading to 'on the spot fines' like they do on the metro. For eg. those going into Gold Class with a silver NOL card, forget what the fine is. Also the '[i'>perpetrator[/i'>' may be escorted from the mall. For those who can't pay, they maybe kept in the security room until they can get a relative to 'bail' them out. Just possibilities (that no doubt have been thought out ;) ), but then it raises the question about who should be the one who decides who is dressed indecently, what is appropriate length of skirt? Will it deter tourists. Will nationalities be singles out. Is it the start of a slippery slope? I agree (if this sort of thing is implemented) with the money going to help the plight of those in difficulties/good causes. I read about a man who knocked down someone (it was an accident, apparently the man walked in front of him), and he has served his prison time, but he can't afford the 200k blood money for the family, so is still in jail, and will be for a long time probably. I am sure there are equally deserving cases that the money could be used for.(maybe not ones in jail, but perhaps those labourers who need to be repatriated because the have been left without wages)

I'm all for a stricter dress code. I am not a Muslim, but more then once I am embarrassed by the way some ladies (?) think they should dress in public. This is a Muslim country after all, so we have to respect that and dress accordingly. By no means we should all be wearing niqaab, but the least we can do is cover our shoulders and wear knee long skirts and trousers! Same here, I doubt if they could implement it in the malls like SD said, who is going to single out the women/men (mainly women I guess judging by the article) as they walk into the malls, they would need security guards on the doors. The comments on the article are very emotive, seems like it's a big issue that's been brewing a while, some people are saying they don't go out with their families anymore due to the near-naked ladies in the malls and there are a few saying that those who flaunt the dress rules should be jailed.

lol Did I tell you BM that I survived a whole summer here without AC and only a few fans. Tis true... :) When we were children (a long time ago), we had no air-conditioning. I remember when we were invited to the Palace and we all shivered and said "it's freeeeezing" lol, then my Dad announced that he also had air-con at work...then we knew why he was always eager to go to work! Needless to say, the following year he was forced to buy us an air conditioner. [b'>But really, the heat is only bad when you are not conditioned to it.[/b'> As teenagers we would go camping in the middle of the summer. [b'>I would not walk for 3 mins in it now.[/b'> You are right Captain and Sue, I guess me and the kids are accustomed to it now, we go out a lot, plus we have no car. Coming straight away from the UK to the Dubai summer sun won't be the same. I remember when we came in August 5 years ago, twas hot. But I still think if needs must, and budget dictates, then it can be done. Feefmick sounds like a very sensible young lady, I'm sure she'll be fine. :)

I know I can't say for sure but I'm hoping mine will be the same. I guess it's the opposite of UK - mine go to athletics in minus temps, blowing a gale and pouring with rain and people can't believe I let them out in it and seem quite horrified. We'll see how we go and i know the little one struggles more than the eldest so will be cognisant of that . Eldest was born in KL and I often wonder if that's why she copes better with extremes of temperature. Just to clarify the weather in the middle east is nothing like the UK or any where "opposite". [b'> There are valid reasons why no one ventures out during the hotter months[/b'> and why there are laws in place to stop outside work during these hotter months. Children in the middle east don't stop exercising in the hot months they just change locations of where they perform their exercise. Heat stroke is very serious in small children, most people try not to expose their children to that by exposing them to the summer heat more than required. There is a huge difference between a holiday in April (one of the coldest Aprils for a long time) such a climate. Most residents can spot the lobster tourists a mile away! I think you are missing the point here, she's talking about walking her kids to the school, probably for 10 mins, not exercising in the sun. People venture out all the time (and not those baking on the beach getting a lobster tan), go to places like Deira and Satwa, there are plenty of people out and about, not everyone can afford the luxury of a 4X4. Before the days of AC here they used to go to school as well, and not always in car. My DH is from a very hot place not far from here and when he was a boy they all walked to school in the heat, didn't have a choice. Let Feefmick try it out and if it doesn't work then there's always RTA bus. I have walked with my kids for a short time to and from the metro station (15 mins) in the summer months and we have been fine, it's no big deal. <em>edited by Alismum on 09/05/2012</em>
