Feefmick, you won't have to do the walk on the way back in the summer months if it gets too much. The 31 bus goes from DBS to the gates of Springs 3 (see the other thread for TT), takes 3 mins :)

Feefmick see look, bus Number 31 goes from DBS around Springs. In the summer months you could catch the bus home from school, it will stop at the gates of Springs 3. http://www.gulfnews.com/polopoly_fs/1.504597!menu/standard/file/f31_moe_ms_albarsha_meadow.pdf It takes 3 mins by bus from DBS to the gates of Springs 3and the bus goes every half hour at 2.37pm 3.07pm, 3.37pm. Cost 1.80 dirham http://wojhati.rta.ae/dub/FILELOAD?Filename=dub_4FA952C12.pdf http://wojhati.rta.ae/dub/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=en Apparently it's 9 mins walk from DBS to the gates of Springs 3. edited by Alismum on 08/05/2012

I'll let you all know come Sept LOL. Feefmick, September probably won't be bad, I did it last year with my youngest and he was fine, mornings weren't bad at all, coming back was hotter but manageable, it's June/July that you will find the most difficult, and yes BM is right about the humidity some days.

Wasn't pleasant but i managed. lol Feefmick all these mums who walk out of their air conditioned houses to their air conditioned cars. What if there were only donkeys and camels as transport what would they do then ;)

OK for next year it's July finish, yes I remember that thread now.. I think if Feefmick gets a place within 15 mins walking distance of the school she'll be fine, and if June/July is difficult perhaps she can organise a lift for that time, advertise in the school to share costs with one of the mums nearby.

Pleasant?... :\: Remember that schools now won't finish until July. I personally would not walk very far at 1pm in July. :\: Maybe it's just me? BM Thought it was 21st June, term finishes??? . 15 mins walk at 1pm in July is do-able I have done it many times with my two over the last 5 years :) ETA: There are still folks laying on the beach at that time in July/August as well. edited by Alismum on 08/05/2012

I know it's going to be hot but going to have to give it a try. I managed to run at 6pm when visiting last summer so hoping will be OK if we can get a place close enough. Feefmick, you'll be fine walking to and from school I have done it myself with my now 5 year old, as I have no car. In fact I have just got in after being outside for an hour with him (we had to run an errand). I would say it will be fine if the walk is 20 mins or less. In a morning at 7am it's not too hot. I took my youngest on the metro to school for 6 months and we did a 15 mins walk at either end. Coming back was the same. I have been out with both of mine in July/August as well, nothing keeps us in ;) . Just remember to get your kids a trolley bag so that they don't have to carry a heavy bag. 15 mins walk will be nothing, so what if they sweat on the way back, take some water with you. Also it will boost their vitamin D levels.

I'm the same Irooni, the ironing pile keeps growing and with the hotter weather the washing machine is on more, generating yet more ironing. TBH I have stopped ironing everything now. Anything that's worn for bed, towels, sheets, underwear, I don't iron anymore. I was wondering myself if I should take my pile somewhere nearby to be ironed, or perhaps pay an agency maid for an hour.

Or it comes in a small tub with a very gaily coloured eastern looking label. Oh and I was also thinking curry leaves might be the culprit but I like the smell of them and they really dont linger that long odour wise. Thanks DR and Priyankaj, I was looking for a packet that's why I didn't see it. Will have a look again later in the week.

And yes, it does have medicinal qualities - a smelling salt substitute must be one of them. :) lol DR I was reading about this spice earlier and it can also be used as an outdoor snake repellent :) :) I've been googling it as well and its commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine which and old Sri Lankan maid of mine used to swear by. http://www.joyfulbelly.com/Ayurveda/ingredient/Hing/38 yes DR it looks interesting, I might buy some and try it out (I'll be careful lol). [i'>[u'>Health Benefits[/u'> Not hugely popular in Western herbal medicine, asafoetida is a major herb in India and Ayurvedic practice. It is used for treating stomach spasm, intestinal parasites, whooping cough, and other respiratory disorders. Little medical research is available to prove the health properties of the herb, but common use reports asafoetida's effectiveness for the following conditions: [u'>Digestive disorders. [/u'>The plant extract strengthens digestive tracts and acts as general stomach tonic. Its laxative properties are useful for the patients with colics, flatulence, and indigestion (both in adults in children). Intestinal gases often influence irritable bowel syndrom, so the oil of asafoetida is known to reduce irritation in this condition as well. [u'>Nervous system conditions.[/u'> Asafoetida is known for treating some cases of hysteria. In fact, in 19th century it was the most common remedy for this condition, as well as for the depression and mood swings. Emulsion based on the gum provides sedative effect and prevents anxiety and emotional disorders. [u'>Respiratory conditions[/u'>. Bronchitis, whooping cough, asthma symptoms, and post-pneumonia conditions are well treated by asafoetida. It stimulates the mucous release and easens the symptoms of inflammation. Enhancing the expectorating power, the herb is particularly useful for the eldery and children. [u'>Insects Bites.[/u'> Deodorant properties of asafoetida protect human body from insect attacks. Adding garlic to the mixture makes this kind of repellent even more effective. In Afganistan people rub asafoetida over their body to stay away from poisonous snakes and vipers. [u'>Other uses.[/u'> In addition to the mentioned, asafoetida is used in such conditions as menstrual disorders, headaches and dizziness, toothache, impotence, fungal infections and high cholesterol levels.[/i'> http://www.chinese-herbs.org/asafoetida/

That could be the one then DesertRose. I don't use it in my cooking, never heard of it until just now you mentioned it. Plain Jane ask you maid if she cooks with this spice. [i'> Most similar in appearance to fennel, asafoetida smells like rotting feet, which causes many cooks to feel nervous about using the herb. In fact, some countries refer to asafoetida as Devil's Dung because of the foul smell.[/i'> http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-asafoetida.htm

Does she have a cooker and an extractor hood in her room then, is it like a self-contained apartment with cooking facilities. "I cook curry and spicy foods myself all the time, and it never smells like this does, nor lingers the way this does." Same here, my apartment never seems to smell like a curry house, despite the fact that I cook lots of spicy food. I wonder what is the missing ingredient in my cooking ;) Plain-Jane, Check out the spices she is using. She must be cooking with a spice that is extra pungent, one which differs from mine and yours (and I use a lot of spices :) ), because despite the fact we use spices, the smell doesn't linger. By process of elimination you should be able to identify the spice causing the smell, then you can ask her not to cook with this particular spice in the apartment. edited by Alismum on 05/05/2012

Plain-Jain, Does she cook the bulk of her food in the kitchen. I think any food cooked in a confined space like the bedroom will smell more and probably the pungent smell will get onto her bedding and clothes as well. I don't mind the cooking of curry spices at all, nor entering homes where spices are cooked but pongy fish well that's another matter. There's a yummy Iranian dish called Ghormeh Sabzi (Irooni will know) and it smells the whole apartment block out when cooked :) Try simmering the vinegar (or baking soda) and also I read clove oil neutralises cooking smells, you can use it with a diffuser.

Yes you are right Loube, it might work out better a months holiday at the end of the contract, but the maids are in effect losing a months holiday as they currently get a months holiday and a ticket home per year. Perhaps this is why they are introducing gratuity pay, a month per year of service. Mind you I bet there will be a lot of maids that will take advantage of the 15 days paid sickie, especially those who have a lot of aunties over here in the know ;) edited by Alismum on 04/05/2012

I thought it was just me who didnt do cards except for my children and grandchildren because I begrudge the money for them so much. So yes alismum, a cake and a phone card is great and I had thought of a 30dhm phone card to allow for the price of the birthday card. So no birthday card and a 50dhms phone card is great. I stopped a while back to be honest DesertRose, most of the ones you find over here are really rubbishy. Besides (imho) the majority of maids would rather have the cash than money spent on a bit of card with a fancy picture on it :)

Don't know that i'd call Park n Rob car park an affluent target area lol but i was sat in my car having a drink the other morning when a man approached clutching some pieces of paper...i wound my window down and he ask if i speak english (lol) and then proceeds to mumble and point to these pharmacy receipts...then he starts to pull up his shirt sleeve and i have flashbacks to all the stories i've read on here about the gammy arm beggars ladling mayonnaise on to make it look realistic....thankfully he had a spotless new white dressing on but i just said oh noooo and waved him away, turned my head and put window back up...when i looked round he was ambling off in the opposite direction...Thankfully if i hadn't read on here that it is a scam i may have given him money...genuine cases are different but these are professional beggars.... I met up with this man this morning near JLT metro station. He asked me if I spoke English and then showed me a tatty receipt from Al Mina Pharmacy. I thought he was going to ask me directions, but his English wasn't good and he muttered something about Rashid hospital, and then proceeded to list up his sleeve to show me his bandage. It was then that I said "no sorry", and he thanked me and went on his way. I am a bit of a soft touch and if I hadn't heard about this scam on here, prolly would have given him some money.

As the resident cleaner in our place, I think that list is fine. Only would take a couple of hours tops if you break down each job into minutes, how long does it take to water plants? and empty trash?. First item is wash clothes and that is the washing machines job. I wouldn't iron towels or sheets either. if they are placed nicely over the airer they don't need ironing (but if I had a maid well then lovely ironed sheets it would be ;) ). Oh and I don't have silver to polish, so no worries about that one.. ETA: There's nothing mentioned about cooking twice a day either, or looking after kids. Frazzled, I would request another meeting with the teacher to ask what the issue is, how does he compare with the other students. Is he learning to read using Phonics? My 5 year old brings home a book and reads every night with me and also with the teacher twice a week. They are doing Oxford Reading Tree Books and he's on level 2. I found this lovely site for free Oxford reading tree ebooks where a British celeb reads the story. My son loves this site. http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/Library/Index/?AgeGroup=1 Click on the book (the ones with the 'e'), then on (read ebook) and it's read aloud with the words underneath. edited by Alismum on 23/04/2012
