Eclaire are you near JBR/Marina (sorry don't have a car). If so I can come for the next 3 mornings and put in your eye drops for you. I have to pick my son up from school at 12.00 but can help you out from 8-12 if need be.

Did you try Daiso in Ibn Battuta. I've seen boxes there, think they may have been cake boxes not sure, could have been hat boxes :) ETA, here's another thread with a few more suggestions http://www.expatwoman.com/qatar/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=158425 edited by Alismum on 18/02/2012

Green spray bottle. I get it from the Union Co-op. ETA; it's a instant oven cleaner and it really is. edited by LuLee on 16/02/2012 Thanks, will try this one, the others I have used have not cleaned it properly even with a lot of scrubbing by the maid (which is moi) ;)

I cleaned mine yesterday. I use Fornet. Very strong smell so if you if have little ones just spray, leave the kitchen and come back after an hour. No scrubbing needed. Just wipe with a cloth and the cooker is spotless. I also use this on the kitchen fan, blinds and cupboards above the cooker. My kitchen is like new :) LuLee what is Fornet and where do you get it. My hob could also do with a good clean, better get my rubber gloves out ;)

Send you passport off after your next visa run. Send an accompanying letter saying that you want them to process it as quick as possible as you need to renew your visa in Dubai. We did this last year whilst doing visa runs and ours took 14 days to arrive, ( I think this 14 days is the norm at the moment anyway).

Chippy, there have been a few (and these are the ones that have made the papers!!!). I have been cooking with bottled water all weekend, although I did forget once and made myself a cup of tea with boiled tap water. From the article in GN [i'>"Last September, the decomposed body of a man was found in the water tank of a Karama building a few days after he had committed suicide. The tank was later ‘cleaned' by the watchman using the same contaminated water. Earlier, in March 2011, the bodies of two murder victims were discovered in a Sharjah water tank. It's not clear how long the bodies had been lying there".[/i'>

Plum Tree, If you have only seen one cockroach, you won't need to place the gel things everywhere, just a quick spray under the fridge and under cooker will be fine. I don't think people here were suggesting you spray inside your white goods, just a few squirts under (buy the PifPaf with the nozzle at the end). If you see them 'multiplying' perhaps then ring pest control. When we lived in a villa, I got a couple of those roach houses from Choitrams and put them under the fridge, and never saw another one after that. edited by Alismum on 29/01/2012

Plum Tree, I had one in my apartment last year. Like Pinkleton said, get yourself some PifPaf and spray under the white goods in the kitchen. I remember someone saying that over here you may find odd ones but generally they don't multiply into 100s (don't know why that is), but so far it has been true for me. I have only ever seen odd ones, even when I lived in a villa. Don't worry :)

Another tip I read Warm the chickpeas briefly in the microwave before using them (30 secs). The warm chickpeas make a hummus that is light and fluffy, without any graininess, also add a bit of the chickpea juice in there as well.

Ram, You could take off the chickpea skin, that would make it smoother See here for some tips http://mamasweeds.com/2011/08/04/how-to-make-awesome-hummus/

Ram, I make Hummus all the time and it's smooth. I use a hand blender, with (tinned) chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, pinch salt and pepper and one clove garlic. Put in container and blend until smooth. I sometimes add a pinch chilli powder to spice it up... Maybe you are not putting enough olive oil in it, add some more... ETA: You could also add some of the liquid from the tin of chickpeas, sometimes I have done this as well to make it really smooth edited by Alismum on 23/01/2012

Never heard of bleach for eczema, but you live and learn. You could put a small drop in a few litres of water (equivalent to teaspoon in a bath) and do a small test patch for a week or two, but I would be wary about bathing the child in it, as it may get in his eyes.. My son suffers eczema on his elbows and knees (sometimes eyelids) and I use pure coconut oil, and apply it liberally about 10 times a day, clears it up in a week, but it's not severe. Lol Irooni :) This is the new big store that's right outside the metro station opposite the entrance to DCC... think it's about a year old, not the one round the corner from Abshar. My husbands family loooooooove this store. I did buy some cushion covers once and they definitely looked like ones I saw in Iran.

Twin Butterfly, Sharjah seems a long way to go for a tablecloth, Antique Museum looks like a good option. I have never been there myself (never heard of it until today) but I must put it on my list of things to do :) [b'>Antique museum [/b'> [i'>If you only visit one place on this list make it the Antique Museum. The only criticism of the place we have is that it isn’t a museum – and it doesn’t just sell antiques. The 65,000sq ft unit in the heart of Al Quoz is a maze of shoulder-wide passageways with goods imported from around the world balancing precariously overhead. Crystal glass shisha pipes vie for space with Pakistani swords, row upon row of luxurious pashminas and wood-carved ornaments brought in from Southeast Asia. Be sure to ask to see the ‘secret’ antiques corner, which contains yet more goodies. (04 347 9935) Al Quoz Industrial Estate (take the first right before Kanoo building and first right again, Antique Museum is on your right). Open 9.30am-8.30pm Sun-Thu; 9am-11.30am; 3.30pm-8.30pm Friday.[/i'>

If it's any help, dorter was born in Geneva to a British citizen, and is registered as a British citizen herself. So how is she registered then? She is automatically British if you were born in the UK, right? Confused.com Not automatically these days. edited by Sugarbeach on 04/12/2011 When did that change, then? My vague memory tells me some time in the 80's... Is it something to do with the parent having been born and resident in the UK until they were at least 21, perhaps? (I've got no idea, just throwing out random thoughts.) I do remember that if dorter has a child when she is not/has not been resident in the UK, the child will not be deemed to be British, being the second generation born outside the UK. Never knew this, so my kids who were both born in Europe, are British citizens (from me, because I lived there til I was 30) but they have never been to UK to live. If my eldest (OK only 15 at the mo) marries and has kids here in Dubai, what nationality will they be? edited by Alismum on 04/12/2011

I am very lucky that my son almost 15, does not pester me for things. Last year in his old school he did mention that everyone in his class has a BB or IPhone, and I told him there's no way he was getting one unless he pays for it himself. He has been saving his pocket money for a year now and almost has enough money for one.

Alismum - I am 'pre Smash' so think I must be a bit older than you !! In fact, I think I am probably the oldest poster on EW, lol SueB - When I was at primary school, our milk bottles had cardboard tops ! Aw bless you Amelia. I thought you were in your 40s. I remember the little milk bottles as well, they came with a crate in the morning, and if you were lucky you didn't get one where the milk had gone off, tasted like sweaty socks if you did. Vera, regarding the juices, I have heard if the drink has a straw then it's less harmful to teeth. I am guilty of putting one of those little juices in both of my kids snack boxes, as well as a tiny cup cake. My LO eats next to nothing though, and I worry that if he only gets a bit of fruit then he'll fade away..

We had no option - you either had school dinners or went home for lunch. Lunch boxes didn't exist when I went to school !! However, the school meals were excellent. No junk food and certainly no chips or pizza. PROPER mashed potato (served with an ice cream scoop) with meat and veg., yummy cheese pie, cottage pie with beetroot, stew and lots of other nourishing meals. Great puddings too, rice, semolina, apple pie and custard, etc. and there was always seconds of mains and puddings. All food was cooked on the premises. Now who's showing her age ??? You must be around the same age as me then Amelia ;) but I don't remember proper mash, it was Smash with an ice-cream scoop in my school :)

I had school dinners as a child , they used smash a lot, brown stews, yumeee gravy and I loved the desserts, rice pudding with jam in the middle, apple pie and custard, semolina. I was thin as a rake as well... and we could go back for seconds I am at a loss what to pack my LO, so I go for a piece of fruit and a cup cake. Just to say that Max Lyth says you do get the 10 day grace when flying as well. from here http://www.maxlyth.com/?p=134 "Most definitely yes, the 10 days grace also work when you fly. I have not done the Hatta run for a while now as I have been going home to London every five weeks (wedding season). I’m almost always over 30 days so use the 10 days on every trip and have never had a problem. They don’t care where you are going so it makes no difference if you are just going to Muscat or Doha for the weekend rather than home to the UK". edited by Alismum on 26/11/2011

Dubaicat, My understanding is that on the 40th day or more you pay for 10 days overstay (200AED on first day and 100AED thereafter). So best to go on day 39 or before. We have been to Hatta on day 38/39 twice and there were no problems. Not sure about airport.
