Please do not buy a dog in the UAE. You are correct about puppy mills [not in the UAE, but pets in shops are imported'>. There are so many dogs needing a home. Please start with looking at adoption - K9 Friends would be my starting point [their Facebook page gives details on how to contact them'>.

If you are close to The Palm, there is a wonderful Yoga studio which has Reformer Pilates sessions costing AED100 each if you buy 12 (usually AED120 each). All instructors are great, motivational, friendly, encouraging. Free parking in the basement of the building too! The studio is called Yoga la Vie http://www.yogalaviedubai.com/. They also do other classes such as Barre, Yoga, etc.

What a beautiful day! I can see for miles and the air is so fresh. I think it is the calm between the storms though because there is more forecast. Perhaps there will just be time for the roads to dry out before they fill up again!

Hi Ladies Please can you advise whether there have been any changes to the arrivals/greeting area of T1. We have friends coming for Easter with British Airways. Do you still have to wait outside the building? I know there used to be the Ladies area on the right as they will exit - I want to tell my friends exactly where to look for me as coming out of those doors can be quite overwhelming. TIA!

I am now recovering from spinal surgery 10 days ago. This was my 3rd surgery. Five years ago I had two operations L4-L5 and L5-S1. Implants were put in which were "state of the art". Ever since then I have been in almost constant pain - with some relief due to epidurals, nerve blocks, nerve ablation (burning of the nerves), huge injections, medication, physio, etc etc. It has been so exhausting. My right leg had reduced ability and feeling, pain/burning down both legs, cramps, spasms.... Dr Hassan Kadri at Medcare Orthopaedics and Spine Hospital is a neurosurgeon and he agreed that surgery to remove the implants would be my best option, replacing them with a "traditional" cage system. Dr Hassan performed the surgery on 8th November. I spent 5 days in hospital, although he said I could go after 3. I am admittedly still on painkillers (but not so much that it is affecting my thought or ability) and it is also early days yet, but I am walking upright and now have the feeling back in my right leg (was numb). I have minimal or no pain (OK, the surgery place on my back hurts but that is to be expected). I can't write too much about the issues he found with the old implants when he was operating but let me just say that no wonder I was having problems! Now the long recovery starts but I am in such a great condition already that I am looking forward to a "normal" life... Go and see Dr Hassan, even just for a consultation... Good luck!

Please please please .... think about your neighbours when purchasing outdoor speakers. It is amazing how the sound travels, particularly at night. We are plagued by people putting speakers out in their gardens, which they point directly out from their houses and straight at us!!! The sound (especially the base line) bounces off the walls and keeps us awake until the early hours of the morning. I wish people could appreciate that peace and quiet is one of the most valuable things!! Sometimes the music we hear from people who live several hundred meters away is louder than our television when we are watching it!! Sorry.... rant over!!! ;-) :music::angry:

Hi Wesoon We lived in Springs 4 years ago with a beautiful lake and fountain behind our garden which started out being a real oasis but then the grass area at the end of the lake became the meeting place for all the maids and children after school and they do make a huge amount of noise, not just talking but they all shouted at the children and each other - even when one of them was the far end of the lake! Also all the children's cycles and ride on toys rumbling over the paths was excessively noisy. This drove me completely mad - plus children climbing over my back fence to fetch their balls which had been kicked into our garden - not asking just appearing at our windows!!!

So I too can confirm this is going to be an ongoing thing, linked to ID/VISA renewal... at least there is no charge related but hanging around at Etisalat is such a pain. We have a "guest" phone for family to bring when they travel from England which therefore only gets used intermittently. Had it for years but waiting to see whether the next travellers will have a working sim or not! Oh, the joys!!

Have also just had a text from Etisalat about this... I too thought I was registered for ever but have spent 8 weeks abroad and I wonder whether that has affected my information with them. I am pay-as-you-go and therefore won't use it abroad for calls unless I have to and also only a few texts. We shall see but they have given me until Friday next week to attend a customer service centre with ID etc before they cut me off (and we are only flying back from Egypt this evening, as if there isn't enough to do on arrival back from vacation!!!):thinking:

Hi Tory I always photograph the item using my phone, then download to the computer. Get some very good results like that and it is almost instant (or you can email direct from the phone of course). Have done this for our ID cards and documentation too. Results are accepted as a "copy" by Government departments.

I recommended too as have also been using them for many years - again always to a home with instructions to leave somewhere... I don't understand how a delivery to an hotel could end up in this situation - surely the driver could have found someone (porter, bar staff.... cleaner!!) to assist. Not good on iflorist's behalf. I agree that you should take this further and hope that you get satisfactory conclusion. I guess the thing is that no company is 100%, especially on such a very busy day, but very sorry that you have had such a bad experience. On their website they have the following Terms: [i'>5 Delivery 5.1 Deliveries will be made by the carrier to the address stipulated in your order. You must ensure that someone is present to accept delivery. Should the recipient not be present at the delivery address, we will attempt redelivery later in the day/the following day. 5.2 [b'>If we are not able to deliver your goods within the date(s) you have specified on your order, we shall notify you by e-mail or phone to arrange another date for delivery[/b'>.[/i'> Obviously they did not do point 5.2 and you can quote this to them. Had they contacted you you could have advised that your parents were checking out of the hotel and amended the delivery address perhaps? Also: [i'>5.5 Orders placed specifically for Free Mother's Day Weekend Delivery may be delivered the Friday, Saturday or Sunday of Mothering Sunday weekend. While we shall always try to adhere to your chosen delivery date, this is a preference and is not guaranteed. All Mother's Day orders are however guaranteed for delivery in time for Mothering Sunday.[/i'> Finally: [i'>16 Dispute Resolution In the event of a dispute arising out of or in connection with these terms or any contract between you and us, then you agree to attempt to settle the dispute by engaging in good faith with us in a process of mediation before commencing arbitration or litigation.[/i'> You can say that you are trying to settle the dispute by mediation rather than taking it further - such a "threat" sometimes works as the company does not want to have bad "marks" against them which going to court (even if you are not really intending to do that) could entail. Good luck

We had small UAE flags on the back of our car - about 1 x 3 inches - and they were removed at the RTA inspection the following summer - and a note was put on our report "changes to paintwork"! Depends on how your inspection engineer feels on the day, maybe!

The "holiday" is to mark the Prophet's Ascension - it is called Leilat al Meiraj. This event marks the night that Allah (God) took The Prophet Mohammad [PBUH'> (also known as Mohamed or Muhammed) on a journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and then to heaven. http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/united-arab-emirates/leilat-al-meiraj

Hi Seasand Please have a look at my post several posts back where I recommended Dr Hassan Kadri at MedCare Orthopaedic Hospital. I have had 5 years post-operative problems following surgery elsewhere. Certain Drs recommended here are not Neurosurgeons and when you are talking about spinal surgery you have to be extra careful. Good luck!

Al Qasr Fayrooz Lounge is wonderful, welcoming and friendly. Al Bayt at The Palace Downtown is also fantastic, with vouchers in The Entertainer for 2 for 1. Both places are very helpful with food allergies, and you can stay as long as you wish, with complimentary tea/coffee refills - in fact The Palace even ask if you want to try a different blend!

Is this for first time or renewal? Medical center in Knowledge Village is excellent but you have to pay for VIP typing service (use the typing center adjacent - OnTime). Can be completed in one day (4-5 hours). So worth paying the extra - couple of hundred dirham I think.

Thanks Amelton for sharing your experience. Just had another bout of severe pain from prolapsed disc and could relate to your post. I feel encouraged to go vivist Dr Kadri right after work today...itself. Oh, bubble_trubble - I feel your pain!!! Did you manage to see him? If he wasn't free, please please make a plan and get it checked out by him at the earliest opportunity. Believe me, there is life after this dreadful disabling situation and the sooner it is sorted the better for you. Hugs.

Hi SafzzZZ - firstly really sorry to hear this and I know what he is going through - my sincere sympathies. It is both worrying and draining so I hope the following will help..... Following severe prolapses at L4-L5 and L5-S1 (resulting in dead, cold right leg!) I had microdiscectomy 5 years ago which failed, then further surgery 6 months later (all of this with an Orthopaedic Surgeon at another clinic not mentioned). I was left with severe disability on right side, pain all the time, couldn't sit for more than 10 minutes (so had to stop work as PA). Tried everything, on painkillers all the time, physio constantly, tried epidurals, nerve blocks etc. Not a good quality of life.... I had not been told that apparently 10% of back surgeries fail. Trust me to be in that 10%!! Summer 2013 still searching for a solution... I did the rounds here and in England and saw many specialists, including Wooridul - and all of them except one said I should have further surgery to remove the existing implants (supporting spine) and start again. Only one Surgeon said wait, he was confident it could be improved and, infact, that further surgery could not be guaranteed to help the damaged nerves which were the reason for my problems.... Dr Hassan Kadri at MedCare Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital - he is a Neurosurgeon (not Orthopaedic surgeon - very important if spine involved and I wish I had known that before!). http://medcareorthopaedics.com/index.php?option=com_doctorview&id=39&Itemid=126&lang=en. Had facet joint injection guided under CT performed (3 small procedures) and following this I had intensive physiotherapy at Advanced OrthoSpine with Fariba - she's wonderful https://www.aos-hc.org/. She analysed my posture, corrected my gait, helped me stretch out all the muscles which had become withered by lack of use, encouraged and helped me back to looking forward to life... Now am almost totally pain free (unless I do something stupid like cleaning the windows!!!) and can walk for miles, sit through dinner with my husband at last, have an almost "normal" life. I trust Dr Hassan completely - when last summer he discovered that my neck/cervical vertebrae were also severely prolapsed and he told me surgery was imperative I had no hesitation and the surgery was a huge success - I now have Titanium implants/cage and full feeling in my hands, warm hands for the first time in I don't know how long! MedCare Orthopaedic Hospital is very efficient. They do have their own Physio department which is also very good but Fariba is just amazing and so encouraging, friendly and non-judgemental. On Al Wasl Road near NBD Bank. I hope this helps! xxx

I spent ages searching for one here and couldn't get one. Eventually had one imported from UK through company as I needed the ergonomic support following back surgery. Good luck searching but I think you will struggle unless things have improved in the last few years. Have you tried using a pilates ball instead? These promote good posture and also as you constantly move around they help with stability/core etc. Worth talking to a good physiotherapist?

TIA for any feedback regarding flying business class with Egypt Air... We are doing our dutiful visit to England to see friends/family and then would like to fly to Sharm el Sheikh for a week of R&R before returning to Dubai. Due to several back operations and recent neck/shoulder surgery too, I am unable to fly economy for long haul (I know how dreadfully elitist that sounds but am seriously in pain!). Therefore, direct flights from UK to Sharm are out as only economy (Monarch, Easyjet). This means we will have to fly from London to Cairo one way, then do an internal flight. British Airways are hugely expensive. So, any info on this route with Egypt Air would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Busy mama I don't live in Tiara but have visited and can confirm the problems regarding the parking. Yes the visitor parking area is strictly enforced. They give you a stamped ticket when you go through the security gate and you have to have it verified at the parking garage office before you can leave. Parking is very very scarce! Also, the nearest "extra" free parking available to use unless you are lucky enough to find one roadside outside the Shoreline residences is at Nakheel Park in the middle of the trunk. A bit of a hot walk in the summer. Hope this helps...

As DT said - they have been there for years, but originally they were all white. It has been interesting watching the colours creep into the mix. Counted 13 peacocks one day all perched on the wall ready for sleep at nightfall. Also delightful family of chickens nearer the Nakheel entrance, some lovely chicks every so often. BTW - be careful if you pull into the layby to watch them - have seen the Police frequently booking families for doing exactly that. The layby is actually the turning area for the U Turn!

Ladies, we are not allowed to name and shame on here so I will not, and that leaves some ambiguity regarding which of the companies is and which is not legal!! However, if anyone is looking to hire a pet sitter, I would recommend they ask for all the legal requirements to be proven before they leave their beloved fur/feather babies in the care of a stranger. Longevity is not in this case proof of legality!

Both pet sitting agencies I mentioned are fully licensed. They've been around for years now. I'm only saying this so that there's no misunderstanding. If you are going to use a pet sitting service then you should use Passion4Paws - they are fully licensed with Dubai Municipality and also fully insured for their carers to come into your home. This is not the case with certain other pet sitting services. Hi TallyBalt. Sorry to disagree but I know that one of those you mentioned is operating illegally. Very difficult to post on here without breaking the rules. However, clients need to check the people hired to do the sit can produce a work permit. The other thing to ask these companies is whether are registered with the Dubai Economics department, Dubai Municipality and the Ministry of Labour. If they don't have work permits for their employees and are not registered with the DED then they are not operating legally in Dubai.

I bought the Babyliss Beliss Brushing 1000 - I am so happy with it. My hair has "crispy" curls ;-) and this dries my hair straight or curly, as I want - and shiny but also with body and movement. It is very easy. The barrel is ceramic with "ionity" technology - so no static. Am using a heat protection spray on wet hair, letting it dry a little bit then using the brush. Just as good if not better than a salon blow out! Also great for refreshing the hair at the end of the day if going out. It is quite a large device but very light and easy to use. edited by amelton on 02/12/2014

We bought a 3 piece suite from HomeCentre in 2009 - it is still in excellent condition. It even survived a flood (burst water pipe in Springs!) and apart from one nail in the very strong wooden frame which has started squeaking we have had no problems. It is an English Traditional style, rather than modern square low backed - it is fabric not "leather".

Are any of those on-line chemists safe for ordering prescription medication on internet? If so - which? I have never used them myself and have heard bad things about them but they seem convenient if OK! Bingo12 - I used a couple a few years ago for bulk buying my Oestrogen which you can't get here in the right format... delivery great, however in both cases my credit card was compromised!! Because it is a prescription they have your DOB and this can be used to change your card. The process on the sites I used was to complete the online prescription then send it to them - they then (later) processed the payment... when my bank's online verification page came up they didn't have the necessary password but went in and changed it!!! Luckily my bank's online fraud department were in touch very quickly (I was on visit to England at the time) and nothing further happened.... however it has made me wary.

Store them in the (un-used) Maid's room!! Tedious taking them in and out every time but much better than scrubbing bird poop off them, or worse having a cigarette burn.
